As in, the car was never for sale in the first place. Some dealerships try to bait and switch with low prices on a popular car, then claim it was sold. But I learned the car I was interested in that was advertised online simply was never really for sale in the first place. The good news is I didn't have to waste too much time because after seeing all the negative reviews on Yelp, I just moved onto another dealership. I read online in the news that the city of Berkeley was indirectly trying to get rid of this dealership in 2014 but it's still here in 2016 despite the bad reviews and city efforts, so maybe the mafia needs to launder money? read more

I brought my Honda Fit to Berkeley Honda for airbag replacement due to the recall. They called me while the car was there and told me brake fluid needed to be flushed. OK. I paid $150, then 2 weeks later took my car to Art's for an oil service, and Arts told me ...wait for it... brake fluid needs to be flushed. Berkeley Honda NEVER DID IT. For 2 weeks, I left messages for Manager Rory at Berkeley Honda with no response, so I walked in and said "I'm the one who left you all those messages". Rory's answer; "I never got any messages." Lie -- I left messages both on his direct voicemail and with the receptionist. Art's documented the dirty brake fluid and then flushed it out, so manager Rory at Berkeley Honda claimed Art's was lying because Berkeley Honda had done the job. When I pushed him on this, he said "Our workers are union so they would never lie." I have learned that you DO NOT have to go the dealer while the car is under warranty -- any authorized shop is acceptable. My advice: stay far, far away from Berkeley Honda. read more

I was thinking that I probably shouldn't judge a dealership based on a single experience with a single employee, until I read the other two reviews of this place. They appear to be a systematically slimy car dealership. I went here hoping to trade my loaded Ford Escape for a used sedan, something Japanese-made that gets good gas mileage and would bring down my monthy payments. The man who walked me over to the used car lot seemed nice enough at first, until we started talking about the trade-in value of my car. I'll spare the sordid details of our conversation, but he another sleazebag teamed to insult me about my stupid decision (trading down). After the second time I started to walk away, mid-crosswalk, he yells, "I have a Mustang that might work for you!" I'm not now, nor will I ever be, a Mustang driver. I kept walking. I had a very specific color I wanted and Concord Honda pretty much lied for a month because they didn't want to order it from another dealer. Sam got my car over night and wasnt aggressive or pushy like Chris from Concord Honda was. They gave me a great deal for my trade in and walked me through each step of the car buying process. TLDR: They messed up their scheduling, so I had to come back another day, which was annoying, but Matt (my service rep) acknowledged the error, was apologetic and helpful, and did his best to fit me in the next morning. I will likely go back to them if I ever need another dealer-related service/ recall... but will definitely call to confirm my appointment the day before. I called last week to unassumingly ask if I could come in for a recall on my 2002 Civic. I didn't mention anything about needing to come in immediately (or even propose a date), but still got a bit of attitude from whoever answered about how it's not a simple recall and it takes at least a week to order the necessary parts. So, I asked him when would work for them, and he gave me a date. Gave him my VIN and name and confirmed that we were on. The date of the appointment rolls around, and I drive into the dealership, but turns out they never ordered the part or noted my appointment (also got a slight bit of incredulousness about how long it takes to order during this visit... maybe airbag inflators are a touchy subject?). Anyways, after the initial confusion on both our parts, the service rep (Matt) was apologetic and offered to overnight the part and get me in the next morning. He was super friendly and definitely did all I could expect someone to do when a mistake has been made -- apologized, seemed to expedite my next appointment, and treated me super kindly the next day when I came in. That goes a long ways in my book-- everyone makes a mistake, but not everyone who makes a mistake acknowledges it with grace. Dropped off my 2016 Accord for a basic oil change and replacement of a microphone affecting the Bluetooth. The service manager claimed he would call me once it was done in about 4 hours. I never received a call so I automatically thought it would take additional time to replace the defective Bluetooth microphone. Because they initially had a problem figuring out the original problem. Second day goes by no call, I then reach out and the manager said your car was ready yesterday, I texted you. What?!?! Texting is not appropriate nor did we agree on that form of communication nor did I receive the actual text. They never put air in the tires and filled my windshield washer fluid with just plain water. Fast forward 4 weeks. (August 17th) Just took my Accord into Honda of Oakland for a battery replacement and they noticed the oil filter wasn't even changed?!?!? What were they doing all this time? read more

Service: While traveling, to visit a friend in Richmond, I ran over a small median, with my Honda CR-V, and was able to drive the car but it looked like something was leaking. I called Berkeley Honda and spoke with Evik, who scheduled my vehicle to be seen the next day, much to my relief as I still had to drive back to Sacramento. I brought it in this morning and Joseph checked it, took a picture, and the only damage was some scrapes to the hook used to tow. There was no charge and I was immensely relieved. WOW! Today was the first time I have ever tried to buy a car and it went so much worse than I thought. I walk into Berkeley Honda and no one is there for about 10 minutes. Then Reyes Garcia comes charging out and takes me out to the lot. I tell him what kind of car I'm looking for and my price range, to which he laughs at instantly. Then scoffs and says that my search is very very narrow now. I wanted a Honda Civic and was willing to spend between $4,000-$5,000, completely plausible! He shows me a 97 civic will 200,000+ miles on it for $5,000!!! BS! Scoffs and says "that's about it." He then proceeds to show me cars that I don't want for $3,000 MORE than I want to spend. We then go back into his office so I can get a print out of the info and get out of there. While Im in there I hear him yelling at the other salespeople. I hesitated to give five stars because all the negative reviews on here made me question my own judgment, but I just came back from a great experience with the service department. They exceeded my expectations, getting my car back to me in about an hour free of charge. I had a simple problem that I could diagnose myself but did not expect to be covered by the warranty on my certified used Element. The very same problem had occurred a few months back, and after failing to fix it myself (lacking the right tools) I took it in to the dealership. At the time I was disappointed to have to pay $65, but there's a minimum at most garages (I checked around) and this was the best deal I could find. It actually makes sense in terms of economic opportunity cost for the garage. Anyway, when I showed up this morning with the same issue, Carter Tyson, the service manager, came out to talk to me. I told him I knew what was wrong; it happened before and they fixed it for me. He looked up the incident in the computer, and without my prompting, he printed out the service order with a $0 estimate. I assumed this meant I would be hit with the same $65 as before when I came in to pick up my car. Carter asked if noon was soon enough, to which I replied the sooner the better but I had no real urgency. In my experience, garages have a line of cars to service so a half-day turnaround is about as good as it gets. I went to get some coffee and was about to settle in to some work to kill a few hours when Carter called to tell me the car was ready, about an hour after I had dropped it off. When I picked it up, I only waited a couple minutes for him to pull the car around and drove off without paying one cent. The garage was bustling too, a normally ominous scene suggestive of long waits. That $0 estimate meant exactly that. I assume that because it was the same problem as before, Carter thought I shouldn't have to pay to have the work done again. I tend to agree, but what really impressed me is at most places, you'd have to push hard for them to concede such a point. Carter did it all on his own initiative - an advantage to dealing with the manager I'm sure since the average representative might not be empowered to exercise that sort of discretion. If you are thinking, "of course it was free, they didn't get it right the first time," that's not really the case. I won't bore you with the details of the problem, but I am confident that the issue is more a matter of bad luck + normal wear & tear, not negligent servicing. Carter could have persuasively argued that view to get me to pay, but exercising savvy customer service, I think he saw a low cost opportunity to win a valuable longer term relationship. I certainly trust Carter and his department more now to help me with any larger, more costly service issue that may come up in the future. read more

Even with a toddler screaming in terror because his mother was being yelled at, Rey continued to belittle my family... We have filed a complaint with the BBB that was not contested. Jim Doten Honda was wonderful, but when they sold it, his son, in accordance with the sale contract, stayed around for two years being a problem employee who never stopped being rude to customers, Now, that the previous owner's son is gone I gingerly started using Berkeley Honda again, and have had only first rate experiences. The head of service is a gem, one of those amazing employees who never stops caring. Things get done right the first time, and the charges couldn't be more fair. My Honda is older - 2001 model - and they notice things that aren't working well without being asked, sometimes, such as with the wipers, simply replacing the inserts for free. They've never fixed anything without permission, so I'm grateful for the careful attention. read more

We had a great experience with Berkeley Honda-- assisted by team leader Ricky, Joseph Pratt, and Eddie. I first went in for airbag recall which got done the same day, prior to the other service needs that they found when they checked out the car. They let me drop my car off early in the morning before opening so that I didn't get delayed heading in to work. They gave my mom their cell phone numbers so we could call them to check in, and handled communicating with both myself and my mom without any issues -- all of which was greatly appreciated. After ordering other services, they had my car ready on the day they promised and promptly called me, so that I could easily pick it up after work and all without a wait. read more

The people who took my information and dealt with the repair of my car were very nice and understanding, patient and straightforward. They gave me a realistic time frame for when my car would be fixed, and we discuss pricing upfront. There were no surprises, and overall the experience was very rewarding. I would go back there for future repair and even an oil change. The customer Lounge is basic, but there is a great bakery and cafe just steps away. This Honda service center is quite literally the worst one I've ever been to. I've been a Honda owner and customer for seven years, and have never encountered a service manager as rude, inept, and dishonest as Rory Dimick. I have opted for Berkeley Honda's services three times now, and every single encounter was characterized by Rory's rude, abrasive, and bullying behavior. He interrupts customers when they speak, cuts them off, and treats them like children. He is condescending and purposively vague about what the mechanics--who are all fine people--will be doing to your car, and when you ask him to clarify he becomes rude and refuses to explain further. If you press him to explain, he will threaten to refuse you service. My last encounter with Rory ended with him cursing at me in front of other customers and his own employees. He does not know how to properly service customers, and is purposely deceitful. In addition, I have taken my Honda Civic to two other Honda service centers--Culver City Honda in Los Angeles, and Honda of Oakland--after getting quoted prices by Rory, and each time other service managers have expressed confusion at the prices Rory offered to me. They have offered me prices up to 25% cheaper than what Rory offers. Quite simply, Rory is a rip off artist. The last time I was at the location, I decided to take my car and go somewhere else rather than be mistreated by Rory. One his own employees told me that I was making the right decision. If you value your time, money, and dignity, avoid this location at all cost. Rory Dimick should be fired from his position. It boggles my mind that he has been in charge there for so long. read more

1 star is honestly generous. I'd rather get all of the teeth in my head pulled before doing business with this place again. They epitomize the stereotype of used car salesmen. Back in 2002, I purchased my first car from these guys. My mom sat behind me as I negotiated with the salesman and we proudly left with the car. 2 days later (and this was while I was working at my first professional job out of college), I'm getting calls from the GM asking me to return the car because they lost money on the deal. I return the call and say no way. They continue harassing me and escalating the threats - we're talking ruined credit report, my car getting repossessed, you name it. Needless to say, it's 12 years later, I'm still pissed and I'd never do business with these scumbags ever again. I appreciate the way this place does business. Seriously! Most car dealers make you jump through hoops to get to a reasonable price. They make you negotiate in a hot box environment. You go back and forth until you just get pissed off at the process of buying a car. Not these guys, they are truly a class act from a time gone by. In the last two years, I bought two cars from Berkely Honda and Gio Sehiri. I asked Gio for a price knowing exactly what I wanted. Both times, he cut to the chase and gave me a great price right off the bat. In fact, both time, he gave me a price and even after I agreed to it, he dropped it another $10 per month once the document signing happened. He under-promised and over-delivered. Who does that anymore? It was truly a pleasure doing business with him both times. Just last week, I bought a 2018 Honda Accord Touring. I was buying a car that was brand new. I knew what I wanted. Unfortunately, Berkely Honda did not have the exact model I want, but that did not stop Gio from working hard to find my car. Instead of getting screwed on a new model year car, he got me a great deal. I am truly appreciated. Two years ago, I leased a 2015 Honda Civic EX-L for my daughter who just graduated college. Gio not only gave me a great price, he even drove the car to my house in San Rafael and took an Uber back. I know it is a small gesture for buying a car, but that is the way business should be done. Not only is Gio a great salesman, I learned that my very first Honda salesman was also working for Berkely Honda. His name is Brent. I bought a Honda Accord wagon from him back in 1993. Whether you buy from Gio or Brent, you are in fantastic hands being served by two very nice gentlemen who know how to do business. Wow, I'm really shocked at all the other reviews. I leased a car from the new owners of Berkeley Honda and was very happy with the transaction. I probably won't take my car there for service, but I would go back to buy or lease a car there. Really..... I'm speechless because the sales guys were straight shooters and pretty nice. I went in there with a note pad, calculator, and threats of going to El Cerrito Honda if they tried to play me. After triple checking all numbers, I was shocked to find that they did not try to put anything extra in the lease. They did give me a low price for my trade in, but the trade in needed a lot of work to feel safe again, so I don't think I got such a bad bargain. In short, I don't think their sales dept. deserves anything less than 5 stars because their service dept. sucks. read more

After going here several years, I finally have to go elsewhere after a history of being overcharged and told that I needed unnecessary repairs. The last straw was bringing in my 2001 accord for a routine oil change and being told that I needed the timing belt repaired because there were 'cracks'. I declined, and while waiting for service, I looked up on my personal spreadsheet of former repairs and saw that this repair was done 3 years / 20k miles ago at a different honda center (the $800 repair is supposed to be every 10 years or 100k miles). After telling the service rep this, he "talked with the mechanic" and then said that I didn't actually need the service because the cracks were parallel and not diagonal. This was just too dishonest. I started going here because I used to think it was best to go to the dealer to get repairs done. But I just can't bring myself to go here again after that. They also charge significantly more than they should for most repairs. I'm glad to be done paying too much for unnecessary service. After taking my car to a different service place (an honest one), I was informed my rear break pads were at 4mm, even though they had been replaced less than three months prior at berkeley honda. The berkeley honda service must have used the cheapest break pads available (despite the high cost of the service), cementing berkeley honda as very untrustworthy. read more

A few years ago, I was in the market for buying a used car with specific things (such as a 4-door, with air conditioning, specific transmission type, etc...). It was a pain in the ass going from dealership to dealership and browsing cars on the lot in fairly hot weather. I used Autotrader to look for cars that I liked, but some of the other dealership failed to mention or show pictures of the damage that the car received or hid the fact that the car didn't have air conditioning. I eventually ended up at Berkeley Honda and stumbled upon an Accord with all of the specifics that I wanted in a vehicle. The friendly gentleman that sold me my car was upfront about everything, including my car's history. I ended up test driving and buying my car that same night. Since we didn't arrive back to the dealership, from the test drive, before the dealership closed, the car salesman stayed late to haggle down the price and sell me my car. I mean, of course he's a salesman but I thought that it was nice of him to do that since I explained my situation to him and had a great conversation with him while on the test drive. Several years later, I am still happy with the purchase I made from Berkeley Honda. My car is still running strong with no real problems. I'm definitely coming back here whenever I'm in the market to buy a car again. read more

I called to make an appointment to get my battery replaced. I arrived on time and the place didn't look busy. I was greeted immediately by Ed and was taken cared of. He noticed that my visor was also not flipping up entirely and looked up the warranty/recall that I have been notified about but I didn't take advantage of in time. He offered to also have it replaced and it was a reasonable price. The replacement of my battery didn't take long and was invited to wait in their waiting area that had a television, magazines, coffee and snacks and a play area, toys and books to keep children occupied. That is a very good idea! I can say that I haven't had a problem with my car since. They were friendly and I didn't feel like I got ripped off as I usually do when I take my car in myself, because I am a woman and know little about cars. It's a car dealership so experiences will be mixed so I understand the spectrum of reviews. I can only speak for myself. I had a very easy time buying a car with the internet department. I shopped around with other dealerships and I felt I got a good deal without the haggling hassle. I also have had good experiences with the service department. It's been quick, although I've only gotten oil changes. I usually don't get major services at the dealership because you will get ripped off. I have had much better experiences here than Honda of Oakland. My suggestion is to look for coupons, get oil changes and wheel rotations at the dealership but go elsewhere for your major services. There are a lot of local shops that can do the work just as well for a lot cheaper. read more

I'd checked with quite a few other dealers and they gave me the lowest price and an OTD figure. I was busy that night, so my wife went in (I had to work late), did a quick test drive (we'd driven them before). I would come here for future service FOSHO! It rained today. And I was in desperate need of some new windshield wipers cause I just drove back from the Midwest not too long ago. I went to Target and they freaking ran out of the size I need.. So I came here. Turned out the wipers I needed were kinda expensive because I'm not just replacing the rubber part but the whole blade. The guy from parts actually reduced the price for me after he said "let me see what I can do." Woot! saved me 15 bucks! And then I went to service and ask them to put these new wipers on for me. Well I do know how to put them on but I really didn't feel like doing it in the rain. So this guy did it for me and he even checked all the fluid level! AND he filled up my windshield washer fluid! Everything was for free. I don't know if all this service was normally free but I was really happy with this extra work he did for me (: Now I feel all happy and safe on the road! yay!
