UPDATE: Sheriff Demetri, the manager of El Cerrito Honda, is a great guy. He took time to sit down and talk to me about the problems I was having getting defective material fixed in my Honda. Honda has a District manager named Larry O'Brien. His actions nearly lead to litigation. He denied a claim and refused to provide any substantial evidence to support that decision. If everyone at Honda were like Larry O'Brien, I would never have anything to do with the company. In addition, my contacting the main office in Torrance, California, was one of the most frustrating experiences I've had in a long time. I got such a runaround from them. I'm happy that I decided to go talk to Mr. Demetri. Fortunately, I think the problem will be resolved satisfactory due to him. Because it's not yet finished, I'm only giving four stars. My wife brought our 2019 Honda Accord to El Cerrito Honda for warranty work, not because the car needed maintenance. We have a trusted personal mechanic who services all of our vehicles. Instead of simply addressing the warranty issue, the service department tried to upsell several maintenance items, including a coolant flush, automatic transmission fluid (ATF) service, tire rotation, and battery checks. Since our mechanic keeps up with the vehicle's maintenance, these recommendations were unnecessary and left us feeling like they were more interested in selling services than taking care of the customer. To make matters worse, we've repeatedly asked to be removed from their mailing list, yet the promotional mail continues to arrive. It's frustrating that such a simple customer request has been ignored. Honest service and respecting customers' wishes should be standard. I compared CRV prices at Ocean Honda in Burlingame, Victory Honda in San Bruno, and El Cerrito Honda. El Cerrito was about $1k less than the dealerships on the Peninsula. I worked with Isaac Helsabo. Nice guy who understood that I just wanted to get in and out of the dealership without getting upsold on every accessory / warranty / etc. Most important thing for me is that the dealership stuck the out-the-door (OTD) price that was texted to me, and didn't try to bait and switch me on another vehicle. I also appreciated that Isaac had put "SOLD" on the vehicle I wanted before I got there so that no one else would test drive the vehicle and put more miles on it. I came in this morning for service at Honda for an oil change, but also because I had a very concerning safety issue with my 2024 Honda Civic. One night while making a right turn, my car suddenly would not move when I pressed the gas. The car stayed on, but it would not accelerate for about two minutes. I was in the middle of a street where cars drive at high speeds, and the only reason I wasn't hit was because the oncoming light was red. I had to turn on my hazard lights, put the car in park, then back into drive before it finally moved. This was extremely scary and felt like a serious safety issue. I had called Wednesday morning to make sure this concern was added to today's service. When I arrived, Andre Wong came up to my car and I explained the situation. His reaction immediately felt confused and unhappy, which caused my energy to change while I was trying to explain what happened. I mentioned that my dashcam recorded the incident. He asked me to sit at his desk, and when he came back, he asked to see the video. However, he did not seem interested in watching it fully or understanding what occurred. He asked if any engine lights came on, and I explained that I wasn't paying attention to the dashboard at the time because I was focused on getting the car out of the road and avoiding an accident. Throughout the conversation, his attitude felt dismissive, and I did not feel that my concerns were being taken seriously. This made me feel more anxious and frustrated, especially given how unsafe the situation was. What stood out the most was when he asked if it had happened again. As I began to explain, saying "not really, but...," he cut me off and said something along the lines of, "I'm asking if the car turned off again." The staff continued to prioritize other cars, for walk-in folks, before hers. She was upset. She is an immigrant to this country and has been here for many years, is an American citizen and continues to have a thick accent. If you schedule a 7:00am appointment (granted, they OPEN at 7:00am), that means the earliest your car will even be touched is MAYBE 8:00am because there is a line of cars when you show up and it takes about 30 minutes (if you're 2nd or 3rd in one of the TWO lines) for an advisor to meet with you. While I appreciate the thorough explanation of the services offered, the 10% discount I was offered via email, and the pleasant advisors at this location...the length of time I was quoted (vehicle ready at 1:00pm) is unacceptable. I have to come back for the recall service (which is safety related of course) because that's going to take 5-6 hours alone. And in the meantime, no shuttle service or any other transportation from the dealership (which used to be offered). As much as I'm paying to have my car worked on I expect A LOT more for my loyalty. The last time I bought a NEW car at a dealership was about 27 years ago. It was a bad experience that I would never buy new again until NOW. i have been looking for a new car for a VERY long time. We couldn't agree on the make/model so I decided to test drive a CR-V and that was it. I don't like the haggling part of this so I have a baseline monthly that I need to hit to make this work and another dealer wouldn't do that for me. I found El Cerrito Honda through Costco's Auto Program and was working with Luis Nevarez (who was helpful). If you do your homework and know what you want and aware of the price range, it's a straightforward purchase. They had the model/color I wanted on the lot and he told me what I needed to put down to meet that price. Including with/without a trade in. The only part that took the longest was the financial part but I would say we got out of there in under three hours. Overall, I'm pleased with our purchasing experience. It's never fun to go to a car dealership to look at new cars, but it felt like we both got what we wanted out of this transaction. Where do I even start! Me and my family were in the market for a 2025 Honda Pilot Black Edition and as most should do I made inquiries about the best OTD price at every dealership in the surrounding areas of where I live. After my inquiry at El Cerrito Honda I was contacted by Michael Muela via text message. I seriously can't say enough about Michael. I let him know what offers I received from 2 other dealerships and he right away said that they would match the deal if not even be slightly better. I say this because out of ALL the dealerships in the surrounding area most didn't even respond back after the I told them what the offer was and a couple (Vallejo & Winter Honda) insinuated that I was lying about the offer. After A LOT of back and forth because my wife had a set amount of where we wanted to be I shot my shot and send Michael my last ditch, Hail Mary offer. And his response to me word for word was "You're asking for a lot honestly. But the best deals are negotiated in person. If you're willing to come down and let us take a look at your car + make sure you absolutely love the Pilot we have, you will probably have a deal on our hands." After that response I knew I needed to give him a chance! Once we got there he showed us three different models just to make sure we truly liked the Black Edition. I brought my twins in with me because ultimately it's their Pilot and I'm just the driver. After looking at the Elite, Trailsport & Black Edition the twins liked the Trailsport the most, because they had their own arm rest. We do a test drive and decided to sit down to see if we can come to a deal. On the first attempt we were off so I let Michael know where I needed to be in order to make a deal. Needless to say Michael came back and was able to get us to that number! He was very honest and not once tried to over sale or pressure us into anything. He listened to our needs and made it happen! My wife is getting her car next year and we will definitely be coming to Michael to make that happen. I also have to say that Assad the finance manager was also awesome! He didn't pressure us to buy any add ons or unwanted warranties. He was even able to lower the cost of the extended warranty for us to make it within our budgeted monthly payment. My experience at el cerrito honda was definitely a 9 out of 10. We actually didn't come in to purchase a crv but Roberto Pineda showed us his and we were hooked. Everyone there was so nice. The only problem I have is I don't feel like you make a big deal when you give the customer the car. I didn't get a bow. I wanted to take a picture in front of the dealership with the bow on my car. We purchased a car from Vallejo 2 years ago. They put a big bow on the car that made a great photo op. I can include photos el cerrito just pulled the new car up next to our car that we were trading in and handed us the keys. Womp, womp, there was nothing exciting about that. I fell it should be more exciting. You don't buy a new car every day. I don't think I should have to ask for a bow that should be part of your customer service especially for new cars. The handing over the keys was like a cashier giving me change!! Y'all need to take a chapter out of Saturns play book. Yes I know the company is closed. It was a manufactured problem presented as an urgent need. The cumulative effect of this interaction was a profound sense of distrust. The hallmarks of ethical service--clarity, consent, and honest communication--were utterly absent. Instead, I encountered obfuscation, presumption, and a relentless push for unnecessary revenue. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience recommend Honda of El Cerrito. While the technical work in the past has been fine, the front-facing customer service, as exemplified by Samantha Rugne, is fundamentally broken. It is an environment where the uninformed customer is at a severe disadvantage. I urge prospective clients to proceed with extreme caution, scrutinize every line item, and be prepared to advocate aggressively for themselves--or, better yet, to take their business to an establishment where respect and transparency are standard practice. read more
