I called a few dealerships in the bay area because I was there for a short visit and in need of a car. These guys quoted me the best prices for 2 CR-Vs to test drive (I bought one of them for my wife). I am always suspicious of car-dealer shenanigans, and showed up ready for battle. I arrived late-ish on a Saturday, and James the manager, Gio the salesman, and Jorge the financial guy were straightforward, funny, interesting, and ultimately, no-pressure decent guys. I HATE buying cars, but I have to say, when I have to do it again, I will definitely shop Berkeley Honda Autocenter again without hesitation. Thanks, fellers. (This is my first Yelp review. Took my CR-V in for an oil change. When I purchased the car brand new a few months prior (in a different state), I added in the 3yr/45k mile service warranty. I was told that any honda dealership I went to would be able to look up this information and I would not be paying for any oil changes. Apparently this is not the case in Berkeley. When I informed them of my warranty they told me they couldn't find it and I had to provide them with paperwork. I didn't have this paperwork on me as I was originally told I wouldn't have to. They claimed to have run my vin in the system and had no results. I had to pay for the oil change. Went to the honda in Walnut Creek a few months later where they had no trouble locating my warranty information, and told me that even if Berkeley couldn't find the info they should have called it in. Will never go back to Berkeley again. As far as the actual service went, they got it all done pretty quickly and called me when it was ready. No complaints about the service itself, just the customer rep. Take your honda to Walnut Creek where they are competent. read more

Great service if you are purchasing a used car. Picked up a 2015 Honda Fit for a great price with the trade in of my 2003 VW Jetta. The only complaint is that the dealership was under construction when I went, which made it look a little junky. Otherwise, friendly staff and great prices. read more

This dealer's service center is crap. Every time I come in here -- at least four times in last 10 months -- there's a hassle. The latest was today. I called yesterday to schedule an appointment for an oil change. I asked the service rep if my contract covered the oil change. I gave him the VIN and he checked and said it would. Then I asked if I needed to bring in the contract paperwork. He said no. I get there this morning and they're insisting they need the contract paperwork, necessitating me to return home to get it. I will not be using their services again. read more

From the guy who greeted me when I drove in to the technician that worked on my car to the incredibly friendly and helpful guys in the parts department everyone made this an incredibly peasant experience. RUDE "customer service rep" that acted like I was inconveniencing him by taking my business there, he let me know that "it is illegal to wash your car in your driveway in Berkeley but you can smoke weed wherever you want!", didn't call me when my car was ready, passed me off to someone else who didn't have a clue when I called to find out if my car was ready, no verbal explanation of the condition of my car when I went to pick it up, just pay and here's your key. I just purchased my Toyota Prius plug-in from Khalid at Berkeley Honda. He and the rest of the staff there were fantastic. I asked a million questions, they answered everything patiently and accurately, and I never felt pressure to make a decision. Khalid made sure that I got what we negotiated for, and I felt surprisingly well taken care of (at a car dealership!!!). Jorge the finance dude was also hilarious and chill. I bought my new car at Berkeley Honda 5 years ago. It was my first time buying a new car and I have to say looking back I feel like I was taken advantage of. The sales man sold me a lo jack system after scaring me with Honda thefts in the bay area, in exchange for lowing the interest rate on my car loan slightly. I was told if I brought my car back there for regular service I would receive a discount, which I never did. They told me that the oil maintenance reminder in my car was not accurate and that I needed to get my oil changed much more frequently if I wanted to keep my car running well, so I naively believed this and dutifully took my car every 3,000 miles for 5 years. I recently went to Oakland Honda out of convince to get my oil changed and was told that the oil is expensive and good, and maintenance reminder on my car is correct and I was getting way too many oil changes on the advise of Berkeley Honda service reps, and after 5 years... I've seen several service reps... all of them happy to take my money and change my oil unnecessarily. I wish I had not bought my car there or had any service from Berkeley Honda. Oakland Honda has been a relief and pleasure to work with by comparison. read more

Took my car here 3 times, 2 times their auto mechanics didn't know what the hell they were doing. I had a check engine light and they said they can do it for free and they did. After that they told me i had to pay 40 bucks for a part that was causing it. I paid that 40 and took my car the next day, then the check engine light came back on again, i brought it back and they checked it and charged me 200 something dollars for some stupid part and said it should be fine now, we drove your car for at least 30-50 miles and we reset the car. I was mad that they didn't even compensate me for my gas like what the hell. Then the next day the check engine light came on again and this time i was furious, i spoke to the manager told him the situation and he said that he will take care of it for free and to be honest i left a nasty voicemail. I took it one last time to this crappy ass auto center and then again i hear the same crap, we have fixed your problem and it should be fixed. LUCKILY, i took precaution, while they were fixing my car i bought myself an OBD2 scanner for my car. It arrived the same day I took my car from them, I drove my car to work the next day and guess what..THAT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN! What the HELL are you people DOING to my CAR?! Did a diagnostics and charged me over 300 dollars and yet their dumb mechanics can't figure what is wrong with my car after three times? So I get my scanner and i scan my car, got my code and looked it up and found out my engine was taking in unfiltered air. I get a flash light and flash around and my intake was cracked in the middle, causing it to take too much lean air to the engine. That took me only 15 mintues to figure out while these dumb mechanics couldn't do jack. All i can say is you can never trust a mechanic not unless they're family because you don't know what they're gonna do to your car and how much they overcharge you. Good luck with this place, don't trust them because they don't know what the hell they're doing. read more

I was really looking forward to working with JR on putting together a deal for a trade-in. He seemed really cool and easy going on the phone. In person rather, was quite an uncomfortable experience. I approached our interaction rather candidly that I was there to see what he could offer me, but that I was not going to buy the car that day. That I need time to make big decisions like that. That's when he basically told me to leave and not to come back until I'm ready to buy the car the day he gives me a quote. I unfortunately do not operate that way in terms of making a purchase that big. Well, I am sad that we were not able to get to a number, and I don't think I would want to go back and work with any of the other sales managers as that experience left a rather awkward and uncomfortable note in my book. I would rather pay the extra $10 or so dollars I would have saved, to support a company and business that operates more gracefully. I would advise that if you plan to buy or lease, and JR answers, just call another day until you get someone else on the phone. Do not recommend him unless you plan to buy the day of. read more

There's not much to say about Berkeley Honda except that it sucks. Service is super slow. I was there around 830am and wasn't finished until 1:00pm. Labor is also expensive. I'm pretty sure this dealership sold me my Honda accord with all these defects to begin with and then expected me to pay for it because there is no way I believe that I caused the springs in my trunk to break itself. Let's not forget to mention that the accord that I bought already came with problems that I took to the dealership multiple times to fix. You're better off going elsewhere. COMPLETE CROOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought a used 2010 Honda Odyssey Van there a couple of weeks ago and now I'm finding all sorts of things wrong with it. Some things are just annoying but others are dangerous. I got a flat tire with a razor blade in it so there's nothing to do but buy a new tire. I go to get that at the Firestone shop in Santa Rosa where I live and the guy there tells me the other tires are bald (the Honda Dealership told me there was still tread on them) and that ONE OF THE TIRES IS A DIFFERENT SIZE FROM THE OTHERS. The guy Bruce at the Firestone shop urged me to call the guy I bought the van from and to see what they would do for me. Tim the guy at Berkeley Honda could have cared less. He suspected that the Firestone guy just wanted to sell me tires and that they checked the tires before they left their dealership and all were the same. So as usual as the customer I'm stuck in the middle with no confidence that the $23,000.00 van I'm driving is safe. Is Bruce just trying to sell tires or did the dealership knowingly send me out with an unsafe van. How would a different sized tire get on my van???? I've only had it a couple of weeks. The tires have that locking lug nut thing so if someone wanted to switch out the tire they would have to have the special nut to unlock the lug nut to change it. The response from Tim at the Honda Dealership was really like who me??? So now I have a car that is not safe to drive unless I buy 3 more new tires. I never really rant about auto dealers but by far this is the worst. Got a 2011 model here in 2013. Now battery's not holding charge anymore. Called Service Department, and talked to Matt. After telling him that my car does not hold charge, immediately he said that the car battery's not covered with warranty-- without asking for any additional information or whatsoever. I told him it was a 2011 model, he got my name and heard him just fiddle through some sheets and after a few seconds, said the exact same thing. It was clear enough he didn't want to help me, why bother calling back? Last time I had a problem with my radio and said he'll call back as he's "busy". 6 hours later I decided to just drop by. Saw him just texting and playing with his phone. Seriously, these guys feel like they don't even want to work there any longer. They're just good with you if you're buying, but support and service afterwards, good luck with that. read more

I now refuse to work with him after he lied to me about the price of a repair, was insultingly dismissive and rude and bullied the other employees. I've been getting my car serviced here since 2001 and I've always been satisfied until my run in with Rory. I went to Berkeley Honda's service department. I sat at Paul's desk for about 45 minutes while people kept interrupting him as he was helping me. Finally, he got around to taking my information down. He wrote down that the car had 119k miles even though it has 124k. Why? Because there is typically a 120k mile warranty so he wanted to be below that mark. Then he gave me an estimate of $160. I asked him what the estimate was for on a warranty job. He said just in case he found something wrong. So I asked him what he intended to find wrong. He said just in case it wasn't the module which is under warranty and that he would have to look up the codes. I told him that I could look up the codes myself to which he responded that he would have to look them up too. I told him that I didn't need the work done now and that I would go do my homework because this wasn't in line with anything I read about this warranty job. He then punched up the VIN to see if the car was still under warranty and if it had a bad VIN. It was all clear so this should be just a warranty job. Then he dropped the price down to $75 and basically told me to take it or leave it. I told him I'd leave it and left. I wasn't even 100 yards down the road when he called and left a message saying that since he took the time to write the service order in that he would, for this one time only, set the estimate to $0. The thing is, he got at least 4 interruptions while I was there with people asking for their cars and he hadn't finished the job. In one of the calls, he used the same line, for this one time only, I'll do this for you. I just kept driving. read more

Less than 2 months ago I traded in my old Honda Accord for a Honda Civic. The sales process was actually not bad and I feel that I got a pretty fair price. However, as soon as I drove the car away a "TPMS" light came on. I immediately called the dealer and they told me that light is not a big deal, and since I live in San Francisco I can just go to the SF Honda dealer to have the light turned off. Since I was told the light was not a big deal, I did not worry too much about it. A few weeks later I was out of town and my brother noticed the front left tire was getting flat. He filled it and pretty soon afterward noticed it was flat again. He took it to the SF Honda dealer and they said the front two tires needed to be replaced. Since I was out of town and the flat was pretty bad, my brother had the tires replaced. When I got home I called the Berkeley Honda dealer to explain the issue and hear their thoughts; I was not aggressive and just wanted to have a calm conversation about the issue and possible resolutions. I reminded them of what they had said when selling me the car; if any issues happened soon after selling me the car they were reasonable people and would work with me. I explained that having to replace both front tires less than 2 months after purchasing the car did not seem reasonable to me. The sales rep (JR) was immediately defensive and told me the SF Honda guys got a good deal and that there was nothing he could do for me and hung up the phone. Quite a different person than the nice guy selling me the car a few weeks ago. Now I fear that more issues will start appearing with the car. From reading other reviews it sounds like these guys are intentionally taking advantage of people and have little regard for the quality of service that they provide or the reputation that they hold. read more

If you agree with 99% of the population that buying a car is not a pleasurable experience, then stay away from this dealership. These people are certified @ssholes. The salesmen either look like stoners or fat baldies. They wouldn't lend me a calculator when I asked for one. In fact, they rudely said, "What for?" I had to walk out during the negotiatin process because they began an unauthorized credit check on me and insisted i sign forms when I hadn't even agreed to buy the car. I drove away and they called me incessantly on my cell to come back. I did go back (dumb me for it was after hours, SCARY!, and i was alone) but I got my CR-V dirt cheap. They were probably that desperate for the sale considering they are always being picketed. And I was desperate for a car. Let's call it a win win situation but I will never ever go back to them nor would I recommend them to anyone. Also, they had the nerve to ask me to rate them a 5 on a survey. Like other reviewers, I found Berkeley Honda to be a total rip off! I called and made an appointment for a "major" service, even though the mileage was well short of the level where major service was recommended. (We are planning a long road trip.)The car had only 22,668 miles on the odometer and we were having no problems with the car. I was told it would be about $400 which seemed steep. I dropped the car off and went for breakfast. Got a call that more needed to be done and it would be about $600. Then it was the brakes that needed new pads. The final bill was over $848! When I complained, they gave me an $80 "discount" and a ticket for a free car wash! They will not be seeing our car again. read more

Own a 2004 Odyssey with two recall issues (now fixed). Waited on them as I was the primary driver. Daughter driving van to LA this weekend. So, called EC Honda (where I bought the car) and was told that the earliest appointment for the recall work was next week! Called Berkeley Honda, spoke with Eric, who verified my VIN, to make sure the recalls applied, confirmed with Parts that they had them, and gave me an appointment to bring in the car that day! I called at 11am! I dropped off the Ody and Matt was my advisor. Had opportunity to talk with mechanic who performed repairs (I have some knowledge of cars and recall issues). The mechanic was articulate and clearly understood the repairs he made; factory trained. Every shop has off days; people have off days. On this day, Berkeley Honda service performed as one would hope and expect. Thus, my five star rating. read more

I bought a new Fit at Berkeley Honda. I'd gotten a TrueCar certificate through Consumer Reports with "guaranteed savings" from Berkeley Honda of about $350 off MSRP. Not a lot but the model I wanted was hard to get so I was OK with that. I was pleased when Rezaul emailed me saying he had one coming in and could contract it to me. Four days later he emailed saying he'd run into a hiccup and he couldn't honor the price they'd offered. I contacted Consumer Reports and they said that Berkeley Honda should honor their price. They suggested printing out a new certificate that showed they were still offering the car at the discounted price and taking it in with me, which I did. Berkeley Honda absolutely refused to honor it. I ended up paying MSRP because I wanted the car. The fact that they marketed the car at a discount and then refused to honor that price when I went in to buy it seems incredibly sleazy to me. I also had a terrible time getting through to their finance department to coordinate the loan with my credit union. Berkeley Honda finance never answered their phones and ignored multiple voicemails. I got through once by calling sales and asking them to find a finance person for me but that person gave me incorrect information. The loan did finally go thorough OK though. Rezaul and the finance person I spoke with the day I bought the car were friendly and pleasant to work with. However, I found Berkeley Honda's marketing practices sleazy and, after the purchase, I found the people there unresponsive. I wish I had checked out their Better Business Bureau rating before going there. As of today, they get an F rating. There are many other Honda dealers nearby who get an A or A+ and are BBB accredited (SF, El Cerrito, Oakland, Marin). I recommend going to one of them for a new car instead. So far, I really like my new Honda Fit though and would recommend the car but not Berkeley Honda. read more

This review is specifically for my experience here with Ken Quan. I went to Berkeley Honda to take a look at a Honda Civic I was considering buying. Ken saw me and came to welcome me immediately. Even though I look really young, Ken treated me as a serious buyer and with respect. He asked me what trim I was interested in and showed me the best car they had for what I wanted. We went on a test drive and chatted about the pros and cons of choosing between the Civic and the Mazda3, another car I was considering. He wasn't pushy at all about buying the Civic and really described their differences and the strengths of each. Then, we sat down to discuss the best price he could give me for the car, and it was definitely a great deal. Although I ended up not choosing to buy a Honda, if I were to buy a Honda in the future, I would definitely come back and ask for Ken. Speedy, courteous, and honest service with him. read more

I contacted Berkeley Honda Service for a simple question about a tire leak sensor on a brand new 2017 Honda. The Berkeley Honda "Service Manager" kept putting me on hold mid sentence and was generally rude and unprofessional. He would not even take 10 seconds to listen to my description of the issue, then he hung up on me. I am taking my family's Honda service business to Oakland Honda--who were very professional when I asked the same question. Also, can see from all the negative comments about this individual, Berkeley Honda management does not care much about the reputation of the dealership--I see no attempts to address customer complaints or rid itself of this lousy service manager. read more

In the past I have had my car serviced at Oakland Honda. Go there. I did not check Yelp first, and because I live Berkeley, I thought "Why not try the guys near my house.?" Never again. It's called a Service Dept but the people haven't a clue about service. I don't blame them individually. There is obviously no system or customer service training in place. Good customer service starts at the top. You hire for it and nurture it. Obviously the owner does not care about having a customer service culture. The place was understaffed and disorganized. I guess they serve the transient student population so they don't care about return customers. This is a shame. Lots of Hondas in Berkeley, this should be the go to place for Honda owners. A great place to be raked over the coals. I highly recommend getting extra service items that they deem necessary but aren't on the list provided by Honda. Its wonderful paying double what other dealers charge. He is friendly, available, unhurried, very cool . . . and respectful to old folks like me. He has the very unusual ability to not pretend he knows the answers to all questions (Although he will diligently dig them up). I trust him to let me know what he thinks of a particular model or brand. I could easily see him as a super-hero in a graphic novel. After finding the car I liked posted for sale on their site and on other websites such as CarGurus and Edmunds, I immediately contacted the Internet Sales Manager, Sam. We exchanged emails back and forth which began on February 6th. He tells me the car is there and available for sale in which he gave me a quote on what I can expect to pay when I arrive. I do live far from Berkeley so I had to make sure I got everything laid out before I drove out there. I did some digging around and found the CARFAX for the car, and I noticed it was reported as of 1/29/15 "new title updated" meaning the car had been already sold. Now why would this guy tell me it's available and telling me to come down when the report says it has been sold on the 29th of January. So I emailed him and informed him about the CARFAX report, in which he replies on 2/7/15 "The car was sold last night." Total BS. It's been sold since late January. Don't fall for this bait and switch technique they're trying to do on you people. They tell you the car you want is there, but when you arrive they tell you it has been sold, BUT the catch is that you are already there and so they will try their hardest to persuade you to get a new car or some other car you didn't intend to get. Pure and simple, make sure the car you want is in their lot and make them verify that on paper. read more

If I could give this place a negative star, I totally would! So my husband decided to bring his car in for a valve adjustment. He picks it up later on that evening. While driving his car he noticed that the gauges weren't working properly... in fact they were out of control! On top of that, the starter was out. He had to push start his car for it to turn on. Because it was Saturday night he was unable to bring it back on Sunday because the service center was closed. We went out of town and returned on Tuesday. He brought his car back in on Wednesday. The service manager agreed to take a second look at his car. At that point my husband noticed that some of the wires under the hood bwere out of place...mind you~ THE WIRES WERE NOT LIKE THAT WHEN HE BROUGHT HIS CAR IN. THAT MEANS THAT SOMEONE WOULD HAVE HAD TO OPEN THE COMPARTMENT THEY WERE IN AND MOVED THEM~ They called my husband later that day and returned his car. Not even a couple of miles after he left, the car started expressing the same issues. The service manager then contacted my husband and told him that they ran the diagnostic check and found out what the problem was but that they REFUSED to fix it because it had nothing to do with what my husband brought his car in for initially. WOW! If clearly someone brings their car in perfectly fine and it comes out UNFINE then OBVIOUSLY the discrepancy would have had to occur while it was in your garage. And if you didn't have to move the wires to fix the valves then why did someone open up the compartment and touch the wires?? After getting NO WHERE with them because they were going to charge us for a problem that they caused my husband went elsewhere and his car is back to the orignal state. NO THANKS TO HONDA OF BERKELEY WHO MOVED THE WIRES THAT SHORTED OUT THE CIRCUTS IN THE CAR BY TOUCHING SOMETHING THAT DIDN'T NEED TO BE TOUCHED IN THE FIRST PLACE AND THEN REFUSING TO FIX IT! WE DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE COMING BACK! read more
