This is my second time coming to Berkeley Shreds. I arrived on a Friday @ 2:30 (they close @ 3:00). I had 4 bankers boxes and cost was $40 ($10/box). I liked that they have their own parking lot, they have push carts for you to use and you can watch them shred your sensitive papers. This place Rocks! read more

This place was awesome, pulled in a few minutes after 8:00 am, we were the first people there and the dude was super helpful. Took several boxes of papers, several hard drives, and a laptop which ended up being about $40. We had a handful of cellphones but since we were no longer worried about any of the data on them, they didn't need to be shredded so he offered to take them to over to electronic waste disposal, apparently they go over there frequently anyway. Looking around nothing is their first rodeo: Hard drives, documents, electronics can all be handled here. They also work out competitive rates as well. Drove up early in the morning, they took the boxes for me, I followed them inside and watched the guy empty out the contents onto a conveyer belt and some metal teeth chomped on them and spat them out into pieces. Warning: Do not order the seal 'n shred bags. I ordered four for delivery and they never came. I have emailed the company and received no response. I telephoned each of their phone numbers and left voicemail messages to follow up; again, no response. Today, I emailed one last time. I also tried to telephone and leave more voicemail messages, but today it was not possible to leave a voicemail message at either number. At this point it looks as though my only recourse is to cancel the payment and complain through my credit card company. Update: After I posted this review, the company issued me a refund with a note stating that the items had been on back order. I wish they had communicated this to me. My prior experience with the company has been good and I will use them again in person, but I am leery about their communications systems. read more

If you're in the midsts of a confidential paper purge, this is *THE* place to shred your documents. At-home shredders can only handle so many papers until the motor burns out. If you've got boxes of papers to shred, they'll do the work in front of you for $7/banker box. It's quite a cathartic experience to see your documents get shredded three times through three different machines, carried around by well-used conveyer belts. ARS also takes e-waste, but I would recommend taking them elsewhere. E-waste disposal can be pricey here. That is unless you're hellbent on seeing your hard drive or other media destroyed in front of you. read more

I've had a bunch of mail, paper bank statements, credit card offers, etc. accumulated in the past few years. I've recently moved and had a small shopping bag of paper to be shredded. Very easy process, it's shredded in front of you and you pay at the desk afterwards. Everything is pretty straight-forward and fast. For a small shopping bag of paper it was $3.50. A standard banker box is about $8 and it goes up from there. Definitely will come back when I need to save some time from shredding. Definitely recommend for big loads of paper recycling. They also do old TVs, computers, cellphones and the works. read more

Needing the space, I decided to give Berkeley Shreds a try. When I pulled up, it didn't look like much, but as soon as I parked, a very helpful employee came out to help unload my car. He had me stand outside while he carted my boxes up to this humungous machine and shredded everything right in front of me in less than a minute. It was quick, cheap, and easy. Start of a long story. A distant relative passed and we had to clear out a lot of personal and business paperwork. Not sure what to do or where to go, a friend mentioned a place in Berkeley right off of Gilman Street. A quick Google search gave us Automatic Response. After calling in and talking with a very informative and energetic gal. We loaded up the station wagon with not only tons of paperwork, we also took their 2 laptops in (they remove computer hard drives also). Getting there was a little bit tricky with the city doing major construction work near their entry gate. But the city workers directed is right in. One of the Automatic Response workers (think his name is William) came out and helped us load everything on to a cart. We actually got to watch them destroy everything, kind of fun to see. And the good kicker, 99% of everything that is brought in, is recycled. Went inside to their office to pay the bill, and learned who the energetic voice on the phone was.
