I immediately shared this with my friend who is a fan of this. There are various ways of enjoying this from the ones imported from Italy found in the numerous North Beach delis or fresh made locally made ones like this. During the holiday season, the bakery inside the Ferry Building makes a solid version with varying sizes. After finishing my shopping that morning, I got a text that my friend wanted to try this but their sign only offered a whole panettone (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=POsRMTAjtFMCuf5i03gMyg), the festive Christmas holiday pastry. In glancing at the display, I noticed that there were slices (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=md_NEV0e-D-NVlIKhvTfOA) available for $8.00. I bought one for my friend and one for myself. Wanting to eat this while fresh, I started picking bits of it in my car as I drove to my next destination. It was yummy, the soft and tender insides of the cake while the outside crust was garnished with a glaze with bits and pieces of almond slices. One slice was perfect for me in munching for two sittings. My friend was only so-so with it. If you are a panettone fan, you may want to give this a try. Saw them at the Ferry Building Farmers Market on the Saturday before Christmas. While I'm used to seeing imported panettone everywhere this time of year, encountering freshly baked local versions is rare. I didn't quite feel like shelling out $60 for a whole one, so got a slice for $8. Panettone: I can definitely tell the difference with fresh. The inside dough was much lighter and fluffier. Almost a little eggy too. Really enjoyed the fresh flavor and texture. The top seemed crispier than imported, with the crystalized sugar creating a light shell on top. The only downside is that they seemed a bit skimpy on preserved fruit compared to the imported versions. But the candied peels and raisins I did encounter were yummy. read more

Bernal Bakery is one of those neighborhood gems that makes you genuinely happy to live in San Francisco. Tucked into Bernal Heights, it's the kind of spot where the smell of fresh bread hits you before you even walk through the door, and somehow everything tastes even better than it smells. I stopped in for a quick coffee and ended up leaving with a small mountain of pastries--zero regrets. Their croissants are exceptional: perfectly flaky on the outside, soft and buttery inside. The sourdough loaf was still warm when I bought it, and it had that ideal tang and chewy texture that's hard to find even in a city full of sourdough. The staff is warm, patient, and genuinely seems happy to be there. They gave great recommendations without being pushy, and the whole place has a relaxed, neighborly vibe. You can tell they care about what they're making. Prices are totally reasonable for the quality, and the portions are generous. If you're in Bernal Heights--or honestly anywhere close--it's absolutely worth the detour. TL;DR: Amazing pastries, excellent bread, friendly staff. A perfect neighborhood bakery. Discovered Bernal Bakery at the CSM's farmers market and I can see why there's usually a line! Our family is a huge fan of their pastries: -pain suisse: like no other chocolate croissant! A MUST try and it sells out fast! -seasonal crostock: right now it's strawberries and it's sooooo good! -scallion scroll: this one is a must too, think if an everything bagel married a croissant -ham & cheese croissant: one of my favorites, with the slight hint of mustard too! -beef Wellington: another hit and savory favorite of ours! -almond croissant: this one is ok...I wasn't a big fan as their almond paste was not that good to me, as I am spoiled comparing it to Tartine's. -chocolate chip cookie: my husband's favorite! Stopped in one morning and had the most delicious cup of hot chocolate. They make the ganache, for the hot, daily. It was so good. I also enjoyed a chocolate croissant and got a jambon-beurre sandwich for later. Oh my. Every bite was perfect. Very cute, small bakery with great choices. I just happen to be at the Pleasanton farmers market recently and saw a long line for Bernal Bakery. Almond croissants are one of my favorites so I had to give it a try. Just like my visits to Costco where I go in for one thing and end up walking out with a shopping cart full of things, I bought a ton here. Ended up with a huge bag full of delicious baked good - a few almond croissants, a scallion croissant, a few cinnamon rolls, a couple of ham and cheese croissants, a chocolate croissant, a Nutella croissant, and a plain croissant. The croissants are amazing and buttery! There were so many layers as you can see in some of my pictures. It was hard to resist eating them in the car. They were perfect after a few minutes in the toaster oven. The almond croissant and ham and cheese croissants were my favorite. Definitely the best I've had! Their stand is located closer to the First Street end of the farmers' market as opposed to the Main Street end (the main street for downtown Pleasanton). They were welcoming, friendly, and genuinely appreciative of everyone's business. read more

Bernal Bakery is always a pleasure to visit during the Pleasanton Farmer's Market on Saturday Mornings. Their displays are always so tempting, filled with handmade pizzas, crusty loaves and enticing sweet and savory pastries. The line of eager and hungry customers snakes past their stall and several others, but don't let that deter you as the friendly staff works efficiently to fulfill orders quickly. We ordered the pizzas and pastries and they were all divine: Potato Pizza Pepperoni with Pepper Pizza Hazelnut Croissant - luscious sweet nutty generously portioned filling Tomato Tile Danish - so pretty and oh so good Savory Biscuit - this was a pleasant surprise with well portioned herbs Apple Cider Donut - dense and so decadent The pastries were literally inhaled as soon as we got home. The story behind Bernal Bakery in itself captured my attention--it started during the pandemic and when the founders had lost employment. But their passion for baking soon took a foothold and I hope they are are here to stay for a very long time. Why I don't mind the calories +'s: + Quality and fresh pastries. The seasonal cherry tomato and apple crumble Danishes are a couple of my favorites because they don't last year round. + Breads. So many different types from roasted garlic fougasse to sando or sunshine loaf--all sorts of fresh carbs here. + Salted chocolate chip cookie $3 chewy and soft! Not hard and brittle. + Croissant staples like chocolate, plain, and ham & cheese all available + Friendly service at Avedano's on Sundays. Always greeted with a smile. Super kind staff and amazing sourdough. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and the breakfast sandwiches are especially good.

Haven't been to the Bernal location, but I'm perfectly happy waiting for them every Wednesday at the Castro Farmers Market. I usually get the giant seeded loaf, and a baguette, which is perfectly crispy on the outside, soft & delicious inside. Today I discovered the raisin apricot loaf & I cannot stop eating it. Tomorrow I'll probably toast it and add cream cheese. Jacquelin is usually at the booth, and she greeted a lot of fans while I was there. I'm definitely one of them & we vowed to remember each other's name. Since I'm terrible at that, I've written Jacquelin into this review. Seriously, check the place out. No regrets read more

The one thing I look forward to each week is the old oakland farmers market every Friday. Recently i've stumbled across Bernal Bakery's mushroom mornay crostock and it was love at first bite. This savory pastry is packed with mushrooms and delicious mornay sauce. The nuttiness of the mornay paired with the earthy flavors of the mushrooms is what makes my friday mornings so special. The pastry itself is a flakey square shaped croissant, it's delicious and buttery. The scallions on top adds a bit of brightness to the pastry. I love getting the seeded loaf every week from the CSM farmers market or pleasanton farmers market! I slice and freeze the loaf in the brown bag and it last me quite a while. If you frequent the Pleasanton farmers market, I would either get there early or pre-order your loaf because they sell out every time. CSM is less competitive. Excellent products. We went to have lunch in Pleasanton and caught the end of the days farmers market, Met a young lady working the booth, very nice and friendly. Purchased a rye loaf and got two peanut butter cookies, OMG! The best we've ever had. Will definitely purchase more in the future. We decided to make it a point to go to our favorite Mexican restaurant, Cocina Mexico on W Angela Street on Saturday afternoons to catch the farmers market too. We go to the farmers market in San Leandro at Bay Fair on Saturday's but they don't have this bakery. Yummy! read more

We are lucky enough to have Bernal Bakery at the Pleasanton farmers market (every Saturday on main st from 9-1pm.) We never miss getting their baguette (crunchy on the outside, fluffy and airy on the inside) and brown butter chocolate chip cookie. I swear, it's the best chocolate cookie you'll ever have!!! We've also had their sourdough cinnamon roll (it's huge!), their apple cider doughnuts, their seasonal crom stocks, their country side loaf.... And this past year they rolled out take home pizzas! Bought a loaf of Seeded Country loaf at the farmers market today and was not disappointed. It is covered with seeds! Has a wonderful texture although the fennel was slightly overpowering - probably could use just a tad less -- and tastes terrific for sandwiches. Friendly service too. read more

Country loaf is best bread ever in my opinion. All breads delicious, and wide variety of pastries, cookies, sandwiches and pizza. I keep the frozen cookie dough on hand for company. And you can get a nice cup of coffee to go with it. read more

So far have tried the following: - Seasonal crumb cake which is really tasty lots of crumble topping on a tender coffeecake base with seasonal fruit, when I went it was plum, if it's in stock grab a slice! - Apple cider donut a dense cake style donut covered in cinnamon sugar, pretty tasty definitely warm it up before digging in if you can wait. - Sourdough county loaf so so good, not too sour or tangy, great airy light cell structure with an amazingly crisp crust and fantastic wheatie flavor - Cinnamon roll is delightful lots of warm cinnamon spice notes, soft doughy yeasted roll texture with cream cheese frosting, it's rich so glad that the sizing for these are similar to a standard muffin Have visited both their bernal basket pick up spot and their pop up at Piccino. Both are well organized for there bernal spot payment either through their online store for pick up or walk up through venmo. For Piccino they had square for easy credit card payment. Recently I was lucky to be introduced to apple cider donuts. Sadly they're not available everywhere but Bernal bakery carries them. You must give them a try. They're not fried but cake donuts. I cut my the long ways and toast them in the toaster oven. Sooo good. If you go to the pop up at the farmers market in SF you will have an excellent experience. I've been picking up delicious baked goods from Bernal Bakery for almost a year now. Every Friday I walk from the Castro to Charlie's Cafe in Bernal to pick-up my loaf of seeded bread for the week, an assortment of delicious cookies, and cinnamon rolls as a morning treat. Everything is good, but here are my favorites: - Fougasse - super garlicky, nice light crust, easy to tear apart and share - rye bread - toasts up nicely, and great for snacking - seeded loaf - omg, so good, and the seeds kinda make it smell like pizza, perfect for eating on it's on, as toast with jam, turned into garlic bread, as sandwich bread, anything you want. - cinnamon rolls - they're really big, have a gooey center and are topped with cream cheese, always a solid choice - ham & cheese croissants - the mustard is really what makes these croissants stand out, they're the perfect savory slightly sweet snack/treat Ryan is awesome and always a pleasure to chat with, and I like getting to hear what's coming down the pipeline. Bernal Bakery has expanded to a number of pop-ups around the city, and are now selling at a few local markets. Do yourself a favor and load up on some delicious baked goods. read more

Have not been to the actual bakery in SF, but they come to the College of San Mateo Farmers Market on Saturdays. Got to try their focaccia & chocolate croissant. Delicious! The croissant was crispy on the outside with solid chunks of dark chocolate on the inside. Focaccia was soft & chewy. Will come back! read more

We started trying out Bernal Bakery during the pandemic when we'd drive by the owners house and pick up their bread and cinnamon rolls from a basket over the fence. So glad to see Bernal Bakery grow as it is much deserved and all their baked goods are incredible. We're thankful that once we moved out of SF we can still find them at the Pleasanton farmer's market on Saturday's. No matter what you get, you won't be disappointed.
