I've only been to Thorough Bread a few times IRL for coffee and pastries, but my husband probably visits there several times a month when he's in the neighbourhood, and it's been a win every time! It works well for grab-and-go, but there are also a few tables inside, plus a back patio with more seating that's really nice on a good day (although it can get crowded sometimes). The coffee is fine, but the pastries are the real reason we go. Our current favourites are a savoury ham pastry and a sweet almond pastry, but they rotate offerings - including themed treats for holidays and events - so it's always fun to try something new. Compared to other bakeries in the city, the prices feel more reasonable, and the location is easy to reach on foot or by public transit (MUNI station nearby).

Super cute bakery in Duboce Triangle with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We got a scone, choc chip cookie, and some chilled drinks. The pastries were good and well-priced. One downside is that their bathroom is out of service and they do not have ice, so no iced barista drinks. Love the painted baguette on the door.

I wish I had visited this bakery sooner! They had a great selection of pastries, all of which looked amazing. We tried one sweet and one savory croissant; both were buttery, flaky, and flavorful. The varieties were unique and well-executed. I was pleasantly surprised to see their large back garden area which is where we enjoyed our croissants. We saved a piece of coffee cake for later in the day and it was still soft and crumbly (in a good way).

This is my absolutely favorite bakery in SF! Not only is it reasonably priced but everything is so well baked / cooked! They have warm sandwiches and can warm up any of the baked goods too. THE BLUEBERRY SCONES Are my all-time favorite but they sometimes run out in the mornings so you have to get there early. They have an amazing variety of pastries and breads with seasonal ones each time. Just to note - they do NOT have ice so they can't make you an iced coffee or anything. The vibe is lowkey and they have the funniest signs outside and always have some fun display in the window. PS. There is a really cute patio in the back! Service is always good - they're very attentive and ready to help you. :) HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I wanted to love this place... I really believed in them when they won 3rd Best Croissant in SF in 2023. I cowork a lot around this part of Church St and I am very dissatisfied with the amount of bakeries nearby for a sweet treat. Everytime I've come here, the service has been so welcoming and caring but the items themselves have left a lot to be desired... Their plain and orange croissants were not bad but I was not amazed at all. It felt like they were both missing something - like it just wasn't buttery or flaky enough and the orange flavoring tasted a little strange. I also was tempted by their olive fougasse & challah breads - both were a little too hard and I want to say stale but they definitely were made that morning. I really want to love this space because the decor is so fun and inviting and tongue-in-cheek and it's a nice space to sit and relax right near Market St. I would be willing to try again - maybe I just keep getting items that are not their best items.

I got a cappuccino here and appreciated the service because the employee brought my coffee with whole milk but immediately realized that he was supposed to get me oat milk as soon as he saw me . I was more-so impressed by how he forgot and then instantly remembered. The coffee was yummy! And the back patio area is so cute and cozy.

The apple almond croissant was light and flaky filled with a warm cinnamon apple puree and topped with a strudel crisp. Tastes like a lighter version of apple pie. Pairs perfectly with an unsweetened coffee or latte to offset the sweetness. 10/10 recommend Went in shortly after they opened and there was no line and service was fast. Would be a good place to sit and do some work or read for a bit.

Such a cute spot, it's perfect to get some work done and sit outside enjoying the birds. The service was as expected when ordering at the counter. We got a complimentary croissant since they rung us up for a loaf of bread they ended up not having. We also got a refund so it really wasn't a big deal. The sandwich was also really tasty but kind of bland, it just needs some sauce on it

Came to Thorough Bread to taste their croissant again. I love my croissants a certain way. Crunchy on the outside, chewy and a hint of buttery taste on the inside. Thorough Bread croissant in great on the inside. It's not as crunchy on the outside as I would expect. DJ's rating 4.16/5.00 Would I come back? Yes, but not my first choice.

Definitely go early to get everything fresh, but you probably won't run into a line if you don't. Highlight of the menu was absolutely the kouign amann - it was so buttery and flaky with this caramelized sticky sweet inside, rivaled in my eyes only by the Arsicault one. We also got the seasonal one (raspberry and guava) which was also really good. The passion fruit bostock was also interesting with this spongy cakey texture with an almond topping. The banana chocolate almond croissant was another favorite of mine, it's also such a unique item and definitely a must order. We sat inside at a table so we could eat some of the pastries right away which I highly recommend - everything lost freshness after a few hours and I probably wouldn't get anything from here again with the intention of eating it later. They have a ton of cakes too, tried the chocolate mousse cake, the berry cake, and the passionfruit orange and guava cake. The chocolate mousse was my favorite and runs on the sweeter side compared to other chocolate mousse's I've had. The other two are also amazing and have a bunch of different layers. I also tried the prosciutto burrata and cherry tomato tartine - an open faced sandwich basically - which tasted good but was kind of difficult to eat, either with hands or fork and knife. Would definitely come here again both because what I tried was so good and there are so many other things there I'd want to try.

The preorder box came with randomized drops of what's in season that week, our small box came with Herby Olive Twist, Coffee Caramel Pain Au Chocolat, Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin, Lamb Pain Suisse. The pastries: they really got their lamination down. The pastry shell is amazingly crispy and really good layers regardless of the type of toppings or fillings it has. The flavor combinations were fun and familiar. It's like getting some of your favorite foods being converted into a croissant. Of the ones we tried I really enjoyed the salty ones like the olive twist and lamb, I was impressed how well the pastry kept crispy even with the sauces. The sweet ones like the caramel were too sweet for me to even finish, but that can be personal preference. After trying all these fun flavors I still think the highlight is def the pastry, will need to try the original croissant next time! Ambiance: the vibe of the bakery was great, lots of hard working ladies and feels like they are passionate about what they do. Bright and airy with lots of pink accents. Dozens of paper thin layers stacked with the kind of patience most people reserve for things that actually matter. The matcha flavor is real, not the green tea powder imposter you get everywhere else. The drinks are thoughtful too. Not sweet for the sake of being sweet. You can tell someone actually tasted these before putting them on the menu. The space itself earns its own mention. My favorite thing to get here is the chocolate almond croissant, especially since it's fairly unique and not too many other bakeries do it. Everything is perfect from the almond filling, the flaky croissant, the crunchy baked almond filling on top, and the melted chocolate. It's pretty heavy and dense though, even when hungry I can only get through half of it. It's still good later on (even after a day or two) but nothing beats it fresh.
