The theme was "Yes, Chef: An exploration of culinary icons through a cocktail lens." Each drink was inspired by or dedicated to a famous culinary icon, and you can read about each one in the index. We each ordered one drink from each section. From the Opening, I chose the Diaspora Club, which was so refreshing and delicious. Then from the Principals, I chose the Chingona, which was a little bit spicy and savory but still so refreshing. To Finish, I chose the Chocolatier Cosmo, which came with a tiny house-made salted dark chocolate. I loved all three cocktails I ordered, especially the chocolatier cosmo because it was perfectly sweet and went so well with the small piece of chocolate. For food, we started off with the crispy pork belly milk bread. For my entree, I ordered the miso butter gnocchi. It was kind of on the salty side but I still really liked it. The apple sofrito added a bit of sweetness to it. For dessert, we had to get the rhubarb coffee cake, which came with strawberry ice cream. Omg one of the best desserts I've ever had!! I never thought of combining cinnamon coffee cake with rhubarb or strawberry but it's perfect, and I might have to make something like that soon. Service was great and we were seated right away at 8pm on a Saturday despite not having a reservation. Food and drinks came out promptly and timed perfectly. We spent about 1.5 hours here and we never felt rushed.

The server told us most people get 3 sliders and fries. I did that plus I got a Moscow Mule to drink - it was only $5! I chose the Double Cheeseburger, Spicy Crispy Chicken (with a slice of provolone added), Olive Burger, and the Truffle Fries. Everything is served as soon as it's made so your items arrive at different times, which was fine by me. Each slider was served in its own cardboard "dish". Again, nothing fancy. The Olive Burger was really good - served with green olives and cheese on top of a beef burger. I liked the saltiness of the olives - it added to the total taste in a positive way. The Double Cheeseburger was actually pretty big so I would just get the single next time. And the Spicy Crispy Chicken was recommended by our server. He suggested adding the provolone slice, which I did. That was basically a buffalo chicken sandwich. And it was good! The truffle fries were excellent - you could really taste the truffle seasoning/oil. I also liked that they were the skinny type of fries. I had dinner with my family at Besa Restaurant last night to celebrate my birthday, and everything--from the reservation to the final bite--was absolutely perfect. Two days before our dinner, a staff member called to confirm the reservation and even offered free parking options nearby (with validation), which was a thoughtful and much-appreciated touch. The interior of the restaurant is simply beautiful--modern, stylish, and carefully designed. Every detail feels intentional and contributes to a cohesive and elegant atmosphere. The service was outstanding. Our waiter was knowledgeable, professional, and attentive, doing everything possible to ensure we felt comfortable and well taken care of throughout the evening. The food was exceptional. Each dish had its own unique and rich flavor, making every course--from appetizers to main dishes to dessert--memorable and delicious. Special thanks to the chef, a true master of their craft. I am truly impressed with this beautiful Albanian restaurant. Much like the honorable, strong, and hardworking spirit of the Albanian people, this place deserves admiration and respect. Went here on a Saturday night and was excited to try it out. It's very spacious and welcoming when you walk in, nice big windows. The staff and management are great. Now the food.....very disappointing. They tried too hard. It was just too many flavors that made it not good. We started with calamari and Brussels sprouts. The calamari had no flavor but sprouts were great. Next came salads, I got the broccolini. Beautiful presentation , not so much on the flavor. Dinner is where it went south, more south. I ordered the only vegan option, the Salsify, and one bite and I stopped. Had my 2 friends try it, both agreed it wasn't edible. The mgmt tried to accommodate me by offering to ask the chef to whip something up for me but at this point I didn't trust anything they'd bring . I hate leaving low reviews but this place is so beautiful and has a great location that I hope they would fix the menu. read more

The place feels modern, classy, and a little upscale, but it still feels comfortable. The food was really good, and there are plenty of choices if you're into seafood, meat, or vegetarian dishes. Their cocktails and wine selection are also a big plus. The one thing to keep in mind is the price. This isn't a cheap dinner spot, and $50-$100 per person can add up quickly if you order drinks too. Parking isn't a huge problem because they offer three-hour parking validation, but you still have to use a nearby garage or valet instead of having a private lot right outside. It's also a good choice for groups and special occasions, and reservations are available. I wouldn't call it hipster or touristy, it feels more like a nice downtown Detroit restaurant for dinner, dates, business meals, or celebrations. There are three reasons why I'm extremely happy drinking and dining at Besa. One, the bar. It's beautiful lit, has an array of cocktails (I've never had one that's disappointed), and the bartenders are attentive and on top of their game. Racquel is my favorite and I'll become a regular because of her service. Two, the food. Being mainly a person who comes to eateries for drink I was highly impressed by there menu. Three "bar items" that I would recommend are the crispy Brussels sprouts, calamari and artisan cheese board. Three, the location. Located on Woodward and Congress you're in the heart of the city. You get a mix of people coming for work and looking for higher class dining. If you come before dark the city look beautiful through their glass windows. 10/10 recommend. read more

They trained the staff to sell, up sell, and explained every dish. The menu had a twist of European and Mediterranean infused vibe. The food overall was okay, I think they should tweak up the menu slightly. The lamb shoulder was excellent, very tender and flavorful. We enjoyed the fries and butter squash side as for the octopus was a little over cooked and the spinach pie was a bit too generic. The filet was good but it did not have as much flavor as the title. I was drawn to Freya, because my mom is vegan and neither my mom nor my stepdad had ever experienced a tasting menu before. The cool thing about Freya is that it's a five-course prix fixe with omnivore, pescatarian, and vegan options for each course. (They also offer a 9-course tasting menu for omnivores and a la carte dining Tu-Th.) My mom is vegan, and my stepdad mostly eats seafood, so Freya was the perfect place for all of us to enjoy a tasting menu. The menu changes regularly with what is seasonal and fresh, so what we ate won't be what you eat even if you went tonight. But I can say that I enjoyed everything I ate, with some dishes being standouts among the courses. Across the board, their food was creative and fun and still (it's got to be) delicious. At $95/person, I felt it was a great deal for the quality and inventiveness of the food. I also loved that guests can choose from several options (no chance here of getting a course that just isn't something you'd choose were it not on a tasting menu!). I left more than full, so I didn't find it to be too precious or the courses to be too small - definitely enough if not too much food for a tasting menu! I also chose to do one of the wine pairings. They offer a wine pairing for $60 or an elevated wine pairing for $98. I did the elevated pairing, and I thought it really added to the experience! On top of all of this, the service was spectacular. Every single person who touched our table (from the host who seated us, to the two servers who were assigned our table) was friendly and helpful and chatty in the best way. They explained each dish in depth but quickly enough that we weren't starving and dying for them to stop so we could get eating! The service is probably what I will remember about our dinner at Freya, as much as any individual course. The restaurant is cool and modern (kind of hidden from outside (just a small decal on the glass door tells you you're in the right place), and the ambiance was great. He enjoyed their chicken goulasch (Amich chicken thigh, paprika and tomato gravy, spätzle, and crème fraîche), while I fell in love with their Wienerschnitzel (breaded veal cutlet, morel rahmsauce, and pickled mustard seeds). Sadly, we didn't have room for dessert, because the food overall was great. Since my parents don't drink, I had a designated driver and so was determined to order a lot of their great wine. I had one glass of orange wine from Krasno in Slovenia and then two glasses of Grüner Veltliner from the Franz Etz estate in Austria. Their wine list is part of what makes a meal at Alpino such a treat. On top of great food, great wine, and great ambiance, the service was also great. Our server was Leonardo/Leo, who was attentive, friendly, and very helpful. The wonderful service helped make this a five-star meal for us. If I lived in Detroit, I'd be at Alpino once a month. She handled everything smoothly, made sure we were comfortable, and the service was top-notch. Food came out on time and tasted great too. Also chatted with David the owner; seems like a really hands-on guy and you could tell he really cares about the food, experience and his guests.
