I initially worked with Sam in San Diego when we needed some work done for the HOA; he did such a great job then, so I asked him to do some work in our condo. Again, Sam's work was excellent. We moved to the Tampa area about two years ago, and our realtor recommended someone for some minor work we needed to be done in the condo we bought. Going with that guy was a disaster, to put it mildly. Fast forward to 3 months ago, we bought a home and needed the entire place painted top to bottom. Like you, I searched Yelp for someone that I wouldn't regret. I grabbed a few numbers and started dialing; when I got to my final call, I realized I was calling someone already in my address book. Thank goodness it was SAM! Like my previous experiences with Sam, he came out and gave us a quote for all of the work to be done. Again, like my earlier experience, Sam came in under my other bids. Sam wrapped things up here in the house the week before last, and I could not be happier with his work. Then, when we did the walkthrough of the job and we went over everything that needed to be done, he DID NOT tell me the job was going to cost most than what he quoted me. The work they did was great, but when it came time to pay Sam gave me a bill that's $600 higher than what we had agreed on ($500 in labor and approximately $100 in materials). My husband had a conversation with him and we paid him exactly what we agreed upon originally. Had he told us about the extra cost I would have not agreed to it because it was NOT in our budget. Then, Sam the owner proceeds to harass me at 10 PM at night with messages of what a horrible person I am and how I cheated him. Telling how he did me this huge favor to fit me into his schedule etc. (nevermind that he made $5800 doing it and volunteered for this job, last I checked I did not force him to take this job). I honestly do not feel safe knowing this guy it out there - as his messages are not those of a mentally stable person, and certainly inappropriate messages to a client. Until I knew that he was going to charge me this extra amount, I was going to hire him to do another job at my house, despite my other concerns that I am outlining below. Additionally, while his workers were there, they used my three car garage as their personal paint shop and painted someone else's furniture in it (which I would have been ok with if they had asked). And when we tried dropping off OUR furniture at OUR garage we got yelled at by Sam as if we needed his permission to use our property for storing our things. Then, our brand new dining room table was banged up (it was stored in the garage but they moved it WITHOUT PERMISSION to make room for furniture they were painting for someone else). When I brought up the issue of banged up table and hard wood floor Sam refused to even discuss this issue. All of that I was willing to overlook and not write this review until he attacked me via those nasty messages. I would NOT recommend this company after dealing with this individual. Sam and his Guys did amazing work on my condo! I had about 500sq feet of walls and ceiling that needed an update and I am amazed at the difference. Professional, punctual and properly priced, Sam was able to come to my place give me a quote and have everything completed within TWO DAYS! For an amateur DIY person, it would have taken me 3x as long to do this myself!!! Trust me, it took me months to complete my other half of a house. His coustomer service cannot be beat! I had a last minute change to my time schedule and him and his team were able to show up earlier then planned. I don't even know where to start with this very long overdue review for Sammy boy and his crew! My husband and I bought a condo downtown after only seeing it once due to our Real Estate agent convincing us to jump on it quick. We knew it needed a lot of work, but not nearly as much as we had anticipated. Every square inch of this condo needed to be painted inside and out and it was not going to be an easy job. The hallway and entry way was a combination of fabric wallpaper and dark brown paint. The living room was a deep navy, almost black and the previous owners had even painted these colors on the baseboards, windowsills and doors/door frames. The kitchen cabinets were original wood, good quality but faded and worn due to age and time. As I said, every square inch needed painting. Each room had at least one wall of wallpaper and the outside balcony looked like it hadn't been painted since the building opened in 2005. Oh and did I mentioned we had 3 weeks between closing and moving in to get all of this done (plus more work that we had to schedule with other contractors). This is where Sam's crew came in to save the day. They were able to squeeze us in, in between jobs. They knocked out this whole place with a crew of 7 guys in 7 days. They showed up on time and ready to go every day. The whole team is extremely polite and you can tell that they have a good vibe working together. They all have the utmost care and respect for Sam and I think I heard Sam speaking 3-4 different languages to his different team members, which was pretty cool. They even offered to bring my "Project Manager" (aka my father) breakfast burritos from La Fiesta (RIP) and on one of their off days, Sam even had my dad over for breakfast. This is so above and beyond what any other contractor has ever done for us. Ever! Especially to my dad who has very high expectations and demands. ;) And then quite possibly the best part about this team is that there was NO MESS left behind after 7 days with 7 guys coming in and out of the place. Sam came back himself to address touch up and make sure we were happy with everything. My only hope is that he will get a break in his schedule to come finish one more room for us that needs new drywall completely! After a week of rain I discovered I had a leak in my roof which led to a water stain and dampness on my ceiling, I patched up the roof but gave these guys a call for the ceiling because I have a house from the 1940s and have no idea how to work with this drywall and plaster/texture. I came across Sam's "Best Choice Painting" by entering painting contractors on Yelp and arranging the filter to "Highest Rated" . After having about 7 contractors bid on my various projects such as rotten wood replacement, I selected Sammy because not only because he had the lowest price for my list, but he was willing to do ALL the things on my list, that the others were unable to do, such as encase the 4 rotting beams protruding from under the roof eaves, in metal sleeves, and replace the rotten fascia on the south side. Sammy bid one itemized page and separate price for the interior, and another page listing exterior items with it's own separate everything on exterior price. But I tried many times over several days to upload his handwritten interior and exterior bids, but kept getting message from Yelp that the upload failed. I live in AZ, trying to get my late parents house painted and ready to rent in San Diego. I made a painting a date with Sam in May 2018 for June 19, 2018, then drove to San Diego 2 days before, to meet him for him to start painting June 19. Well, the night before Sammy was gonna come over, I called, and he told me he was running over time on his current job. He said "Email me, and when I get home I'll look at my calendar". I did, but then he put me out to a date one whole month away, exactly to the date, July 19! I said I drove all the way from Scottsdale on June 17 to meet you for our date, and now that I am here, you put me out another month. He said, "Well go back to Scottsdale then." I felt like he accepted bigger jobs and put those jobs before me, but he had a good price and I was already here, so I waited another full month for him. I had other repair jobs in line that had to wait till AFTER he was done painting, such as gutter installation on the fascia he was gonna paint and landscape renovation. I called Sammy from time to time to make sure he didn't put me out further. He always replied, "I got you on my calendar". The month-out date July 19, finally came, and Sammy came over the night before to pick up my paint color choices and sheen. But when he saw his bid in his own handwriting for the interior, he exclaimed "No way am I doing all this for $850!" I exclaimed, "But you wrote "Everything on this page (inside only) $850", that's why I waited 2 months for you". That was true. He could not argue with his own handwriting, so he said "I gotta go to my truck for something," and he went out the front door. It suddenly dawned on me that he was gonna run away. So I ran out there to find Sammy BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. I ran in front of his truck so he couldn't drive away and yelled, "You're RUNNING AWAY!" Sammy sighed his admission, "I can't deal with all this stress that you are camping out here waiting for me. My GF is mad I am working all the time (he made a new baby with her, and told me about disputes with her "I just had a big fight with my GF", many times), a guy quit and today is his last day. I have to paint alone. This is too much stress for me." I begged, "Well if we don't agree on the interior, then just get started on the exterior, cos I didn't get any other bids and don't wanna start all over". I begged and pleaded to not make my wait, hanging out at the house, for nothing. He finally agreed, "OK.........., I'll be here at 8 am tomorrow". He of course didn't show up at 8 am. At 9:30 I called and for the first time, Sammy didn't answer his phone. I never talked to or saw Sammy again. But at 11:30 am, another guy named Marty called and told me Sammy couldn't do the job, he was too busy. Sammy did have intentions of showing up because Marty said Sammy had called him to see if he could help at my house, but Marty had to babysit his kid. Marty offered to see if he could match Sammy's price or even do it cheaper. Marty came over with his screaming 16 month old in his arms. He didn't write anything down. But when he went home, he emailed me a proposal, I said OK let's do it. He said he had another job to do first, but in the end, he got more jobs, and I had to return to Scottsdale, due to prescheduled commitments. I wasted 2 months last year waiting for Best Choice Sammy. Because he did not do my job when he said he would two times, I had to return to AZ, and it ended up, due to my obligations I had to stay in AZ for, delaying the rental for a YEAR, and I lost rents for all that time. Now, April 2019, I am back at the San Diego house to pick up where I left off with another painter. Marty told me he no longer paints. I feel so sorry and sad that Sam didn't give me a chance to have the great experience the 5 star glowing reviewers had that made me pick Sam. I camped out two months at a vacant house, WAITING for what I thought was my "Best Choice painter", and that was after Sam kept assuring me that I was still on his calendar for two months. During the quote process he asked all of the right questions (paint finish, etc.). Unfortunately, Covid-19 struck and we had to delay the job by several months. We agreed on a date and discussed how the crew would need to work around my husband and I since we are both working from home. His crew was respectful and continuously checked with us on which days would be best to paint our home offices. We even worked out a process so our 2 dogs wouldn't get in the way. In August Sam came out to give me an estimate for drywall repair and painting. I called him in October, telling him I would like to hire him to do just my drywall work since his painting price was +$1000 more than the other bids I obtained. Sam, on his own, offered to match the lower painting prices. My husband and I repeatedly asked Sam if he was sure he was comfortable with the lower paint prices and he was adamant so we scheduled for him to start work on Monday 11/5/18. On Monday 11/5 and Tuesday 11/6 Sam & his employee spent about 7 hours working on my drywall before we discovered that Sam had not included painting my garage in the contract (a contract I never received a copy of). I suggested we revert to my original plan which was for him to solely repair my drywall. Sam agreed but then an hour later sent me a text telling me he had a family emergency and was not coming back to do anymore work. That morning I had given Sam $500 cash (which I never got a return receipt for) and Sam claimed in the email that he put in at least that much work- something I will never know for sure. All I do know is that my house is a complete disaster with only a portion of the work done: green drywall boards in some places, mud and tape in others, with many, many areas still wide open. I now have to get new bids to complete this partially completed job plus we already removed a toilet and washing machine which we now have to reinstall until we find a new drywall repair company. I would not be writing this if Sam truly had an emergency but he didn't. Instead of being professional, Sam made up a lie and left us completely hanging. Worst of all, when I texted Sam telling him I was disappointed that he hadn't simply tried to communicate with me so we could have found a compromise that worked for both of us, he got angry (something I now see is a pattern in his yelp responses). I assume he will respond with hurtful, mean, derogatory things that no company owner should ever write about people but I felt people should know what I went through so they hopefully will not have to experience the same frustrations. I just wish Sam hadn't pushed so hard for us to hire him in the first place. I told him I thought I should go with the other painting company with the lower price yet he wanted to match that price... If he didn't truly want my job or realized that he had accidentally lowballed the drywall estimate, he should have been professional and simple said so. So good that I am having him work on my house again. Sam was recommended to me by one of the best interior design companies in San Diego (Blythe Interiors) when I first bought my house. He did an amazing job painting it and it shows. After living in it for 5 years, and then renting it for another 5, his paint job is one of the few things that has held up extremely well. His prices were far lower than any other contractor at the time, and I always get quotes from at least 3 before choosing. Now that I am moving back, I had him paint the entire interior and exterior of my house to match with my remodel. We did a comprehensive quote, then scheduled the paint job in phases, based on the schedules of the other work being done. He showed up on time, did an amazing job, and worked around mine and my remodeling contractor's schedule as planned. They also fixed various issues that I didn't even notice as they went about doing the work (patching cracked stucco, filling in cracks in the exterior wood, aligning a few beams), which was amazing. We had a few areas that required touch up due to some contractor mishaps moving material in and out, or that were hard to notice until the paint dried, and Sam came over a few days later and addressed all of them at no charge. If you read some of the negative reviews, its mostly a result of poor project/remodel scheduling/management, or just plain difficult customers, but you cant please everyone, no matter how hard you try. His overwhelmingly positive reviews far outnumber his negatives, and I would use him with extreme confidence. I chose Best Choice because Sammy gave me the most confidence in his skills and his knowledge right off the bat. He didn't disappoint a bit. He loves what he does and it shows in his work. If you need a painter, call him! Call him now, in fact, because after I start referring people to him, he's going to be slammed!! Haha. Okay, end of the short review. I had used these guys to paint my house when I first moved in & they did a great job which is why I called them again to have them repaint a good portion of my home. I called on the Friday before my job was supposed to start on Tuesday, and sadly was told by Sam that his current job "delayed" him by 3 weeks. That is a pretty extreme delay and no word from him about this until I reached out to confirm job start details. It seems more like he overbooked or took another job when he was supposed to be starting my job which he then pushed me back 3 weeks as a repeat client. He said he could understand if I didn't want to wait & would try & rearrange & quickly contacted me back saying he could not. The entire experience I've had with Sam at Best Choice Painting has been top notch. I've used Best Choice Painting for a few projects recently that include drywall and painting because I loved the work they do. Sam was extremely friendly every time I've talked with him, either in person or on the phone. At some other companies they've had people show up early, late, not at all and then reschedule after they missed the appointment which is very annoying. Good news is you won't find that here with Sam! He was very punctual each time he has come over, which is something that is important to me. Sam was really easy going and worked around my schedule too. This was a huge help because I didn't need to worry about adjusting my work schedule or anything. I've received numerous compliments from my family regarding the work that was done, which feels great to know that it looks so good other people notice it. Not only was everything listed above great, but the price was also fantastic which my wallet really appreciates. Sam has been on top of wearing his mask the entire time at my residence too. When he arrives at my house he wears his mask PROPERLY until he leaves, which is better than other people who only come over to give me an estimate.
