I hate veterinarians . There.... I said it. I know the work that veterinarians do is great and they walk around with halos atop their heads but come on... we have all had experiences when they try to up sell you. I thought this was supposed to be about pet care?!... not meeting margins and sales comps. And I do understand that most preventative care is best but if I could afford all the services the vet recommended for my pets, I would have children not dogs. I always feel like I'm neglecting my pups when I leave after an annual exam or a grooming and the vet tech has tried to pressure me into some service that will empty half my bank account. At Best Vet, this does not happen! Prices have to be the lowest in town. The Techs are as kind as can be. And the customer service is fantastic... well the receptionist could smile a little more but she I suppose she is nice. You can drop your pet off (8:30 to 3:30) to have services rendered and through out the day they call you to keep you informed on the status of the services and your pet. They follow up within days to check on your pets progress and the most important... they compliment your pets! I love how they say the sweetest things about my dogs, only things a mother would say about her babies and that makes me think that they spend real time with the animals to love and nurture them when going through traumatic poking and parading. Attention bunny rabbit owners: Look no further! Best Vet is the best and most well-priced vet in the Austin area that has experience with rabbits! After getting some RIDICULOUS quotes for getting my bunny spayed, ($400 you've got to be freaking kidding me????) I called Best Vet and was RELIEVED to find that getting my dwarf hotot rabbit spayed would be less that $150. Good pricing aside, they did a great job with my bunny! She is back to her normal sweet self after only 2 days and her incision is healing perfectly. The folks at Best Vet were sooo sweet with her and did a great job letting me know how to care for her after the surgery. The whole process was quick, easy, and painless (for me anyways!). AND as I was sitting in the waiting room, I couldn't help but overhear the lady at the front desk refer someone on the phone to another place that was able to give them a better price on whatever they were calling about. Very friendly staff but sadly I was misinformed about the condition of my dog. About a year ago I went in to see the vet. My dog was throwing up bile, running green nose goo, and he wasn't urinating properly. He didn't always have control of his bladder and his pees were more often than not, coming out in very slow drips. It would take him 3-4 minutes to pee (no exaggeration). This doctor told me it wasn't a big deal and attributed all his symptoms to allergies. He sold me a cortisone shot and some pills. The nose goo and bile did clear up. Dripping pees continued. I went in a few months later for other issues (including the dripping pees that was still an issue) and was told allergies again. Long story short, I had the unfortunate experience putting my best friend to sleep because his kidneys stopped working properly (he was not even 2 years old). The Vet at the emergency hospital told me the his peeing issues were definitely not caused by allergies and were most likely related to his kidney problems. The only reason I am writing this review is because I wanted to share with you what the ER vet told me about Best Vet: He told me that Best Vet tells everyone that EVERYTHING is caused by allergies. He's heard this many times from many different customers. I'm not blaming my dog's death on Best Vet because I was told that my poor puppy was most likely born with bad kidneys and there wasn't a whole lot I could do about it. With that being said, I think it would have been nice to know that he had kidney problems a year ago. Maybe I could have prolonged his life a little before it was too late. This doctor spends about 5 min with your pet and dismisses everything as allergies. If you are told your animal's issue is "only allergies," you may want to seek out a second opinion. read more

The staff was polite and descriptive about the price of the shots. That is the only reason it gets 1 star I brought my four month old dachshund here for boosters and they said he also needed a rabbis shot. I asked them to verify what age dogs get rabbis just to make sure they knew what they were doing. Before the shots were administered I asked what the side effects were because I'm very protective about my puppy as any good owner would be. The nurse shrugged me off and said the only side effect would be drowsiness. I tried to trust them. We went home and our puppy would Yelp when picked up the rest of the day, though he acted normal. Today I put him in his kennel and thirty minutes later I took him out to find his entire FACE SWOLLEN. I freaked out and called Best Vet but it was 5pm and they were either closed or didn't answer so I called a 24 hour pet ER and the pup's breeder and got Benadryl administered which helped the swelling but he's been itching and there are bumps on his head still. I'm devastated. If there's a possibility of an allergic reaction like this the vet MUST INFORM the pet owner so they know what to do. It's unfortunate I have to write a negative review because I hate being negative. But I must warn other pet owners. Update: This place called me and a man (not the woman who gave my dog the shots) told me that my puppy was allergic to something in my HOME not the vaccines in a FIVE minute voicemail. My puppy was in his clean kennel for thirty minutes and there is no way he got into anything he was allergic to. Not to mention there was a lump where the shot was administered. He developed hives on his forehead, his mouth and eyes swelled up twice (two doses of Benadryl were given three hours apart) and "Best Vet" still had the nerve to call me and say that it wasn't the vaccines one day after getting the shots!! ANY reliable vet would know that animals have allergic reactions and should warn the pet owner of any signs and what to do before they leave. I ASKED and they told me nothing could happen except drowsiness. My dog wasn't even drowsy. He was severely swollen. The five minute rant from one of the vets at this place just goes to show how incompetent they are. I don't want anyone to have this happen to them. DO NOT GET VACCINES HERE. My reliable breeder who's been raising healthy dachshunds for twenty years said that vaccines can go bad if they are not kept refrigerated. She said all vets should know that my dogs reaction was to the vaccine and they should have been prepared to help by suggesting ways to get the swelling down not accuse the owner by saying it was something in the home! Google it. Dachshunds are more prone to allergic reactions than most breeds. There are also the first pictures that come up with the same bumps that my dog got when you google vaccines. One of my friend's dogs got epilepsy from puppy vaccines while another had the same facial swelling my dog got. ANY VET should know that. So please find a competent vet. THIS ONE IS NOT. read more

Love this place and I'll give you two reasons why. Due to genetics of this particular breed, my dog's eye lashes were turning in. Awful and painful for him. I first visited another practice on 620 but then had to come back to talk with a "specialist." So now I'm down $250 from two consults. Then I visited Dr. Bob. He explained the surgery, recoup time and cost. Within 48hrs my dog was resting with repaired eye lids and the cost was 1/3 of the other place. Here's the other reason: Everyone that works there is nice and they genuinely seem to enjoy their jobs. I now take all four of my dogs and two cats there. Wouldn't go anyplace else. read more

My mom's dog died today because of this vet and their idiot doctors. She took her dog in 2 weeks ago because she was acting lethargic and wasn't eating or drinking water. They did x-rays and told her that her dog had a growth on her spleen and they needed to remove it. They did the surgery and told her it wasn't malignant and my mom and her dog went home to recover. Today, she called me crying because her dog was acting the same again. I recommended she take her dog to my vet Austin Vet Care on North Lamar (which is a phenomenal clinic with stellar doctors). They immediately rushed her dog back and within one x-ray and 10 minutes, informed my mom that her dog had malignant tumors all throughout her body and was bleeding internally. They said the doctor at Best Vet SHOULD have recognized this immediately and treated her differently. Unfortunately, she lost precious time and my mom had to put her dog down today. The doctor told my mom that she needed to find a new clinic and was not surprised by my mom's story about Best Vet. They felt so bad for my mom and the situation that they gave her a huge discount on the bill. DO NOT GO TO BEST VET! THE DOCTOR IS A QUACK AND MY MOMS DOG DIED BECAUSE OF THEM. read more

My girlfriend has been taking her pet rabbit here since moving to Austin, and has been very happy each time. Finding a place that deals with exotics and is also affordable can be hard. Best Vet is both of these things. When she had her rabbit spayed a few years ago, she called around to several places that wanted $300 - $500 and were trying to upsell her on pain meds and all sorts of unnecessary nonsense. The doctors at Best Vet informed her that pain meds KILL rabbits (did some research and confirmed this), plus, they did the procedure for around $85 dollars. They did a FANASTIC job and her bunny's behavioral problems stopped. Then yesterday her rabbit injured its foot, and she took it back to Best Vet. They didn't have any appointments available, but they let her drop the rabbit off anyway and managed to squeeze her in. They called her back in less than an hour and gave options on care. Very affordable and reasonable options. The doctor said he couldn't find a break and recommended trying to treat it as a sprain first instead of incurring unnecessary cost with x-rays and sedation, but left the decision up to her. Now, at this point any vet could have taken advantage of her and done the x-rays and sedation, incurring a several hundred dollar bill, but not Best Vet. These guys are honest and reasonable. They are wayyyy out of my way, but totally worth the drive. read more

People here are nice. I don't mind taking my dog here while I am in Austin... However, with that being said, I don't think I would go as far as saying that this is the best vet ever. I really miss my old vet in Cali. They know my dog by his name and the vet actually spends more than 10 minutes + in the room for each of my visits. I don't know... maybe I just feel like it's too much of an in-and-out experience here. I've been taking my furbabies here for about a year and everything was ok up until one of them actually got sick. For annual check ups, this is place is alright but if you need something REAL done, avoid this place at all costs. If they had done they're job correctly the first time around my baby would still be here. Carelessness, that's what it was. Her pain was unnecessary. Full disclosure: I have been to Best Vet once (the day I'm writing this review, as a matter of fact). Hopefully my experience today is a representative sample (and I strongly believe it will be given the other reviews on yelp) TL;DR version: The staff is competent and kind, the prices are affordable (I'm a poor graduate student), and the location is great. Longer version: So here's my story. Last night my dog woke me up whining and licking her leg. I examined it and found that a small lump she'd had previously had gotten bigger and was bleeding. Cue freak out. I convinced myself she had cancer and cried the whole night. Called and left a frantic message around 5AM on Best Vet's answering machine then fell into an exhausted sleep. Around 11Am they called and woke me up, told me they would squeeze me in at 2:30. So I pack Malon (my dog) up and head over to Best Vet. Found out I can literally walk there from the apartment I'm moving in at the end of the week. Pro #1 I went into the waiting room. IT was clean, inviting, and smelled really nice. The receptionist was very obviously busy, but she took time to come and pet my dog and make her feel welcome, which is a big deal for my dog who is currently being socialized. The wait time was reasonable. I got in within 5 minutes of my appointment time, and saw not only one tech, but two techs AND the vet. They were all very friendly with my dog and didn't treat her like a pariah when I told them that I felt more comfortable muzzling her during the check up just in case. I mentioned that she was needing her shots soon and they told me they had a 99 dollar deal where you get all the annual shots (Rabies, parvo, distemper) a heart worm test, fecal test, and the exam for 99 dollars. Last time I had all of these things done at a "low cost" vet, I ended up paying around 200 dollars. Dr. Bob was awesome when looking at her wound. He addressed all of my concerns while being friendly with my dog. Most importantly, he didn't jump straight to surgery or to try and use scare tactics to get me to pay for things I didn't need. In the end he recommended we try and clear the bump up with topical antibiotics and a cortisone/penicillin shot with a follow up phone call in two weeks to re-evaluate. read more

This is a long overdue review for my fur baby's dental cleaning & extraction that was performed at Best Vet. I chose this place due to its cleanliness, staff friendliness, and doctor reliability. During the initial consultation exam, they printed out a detailed estimate, and a vet technician explained each line item with me which was very helpful. The surgery was performed in May of this year, and I am happy to say that my 11 year old fur baby fully recovered in less than 2 weeks and is doing great. I was nervous at the time due to his age, but am so glad that I went through with this procedure. While most of his teeth are gone now, he still enjoys eating dry food. Best Vet is GREAT. I don't know why others have written such terrible reviews, but it seems like it was maybe a bad day for them or simple miscommunication because Best Vet is wonderful. I have talked with the same receptionist each time I go in and she is super friendly and sweet! She asks questions about my animals, about my day, and smiles like she actually loves her job (which she probably does!) unlike so many other "professionals" in any field. Friendly service is what I look for no matter where I go and she does not disappoint. If I feel out of place at a business (no matter what the type) I will not come back. If I feel awkward or unwanted, I will not return to give them anymore of my business. Best Vet and all the staff makes you feel like you are an old friend--no one there was anything but full of the great ol' southern hospitality vibe. My particular visit was to get my sugar glider neutered and aside from their price being the LOWEST in town (seriously, some vets want to charge $200 for a neuter? OUTRAGEOUS!), the tech that took care of my baby boy was funny, charismatic, and made me feel absolutely comfortable leaving him there. I had no worries that he was in good hands as I left to go to work that day--they had everything covered. He was cool, down-to-earth and had a rad braid in his beard so kudos to you, man, for being awesome! I've also met Dr. Bob on a previous occasion when my female sugar glider was sick and he was super chill and awesome as well. They tell it to you like it is without any sugar coating, but they do not make you feel like a terrible owner while doing it. They know you're only human and trying to do what's best for your pet. TLDR version: This vet lives up to it's title FOR SURE! Just the vibe you get from the staff is worthy enough to come back, not to mention their GREAT prices. Without a doubt the best vets in Austin! The staff is super friendly with excellent advise and the prices are second to none . Having been taken for thousands from other vets over our little dogs problems, we show up at Best Vet thinking we just cant afford any more huge bills and would have to consider putting our best friend down. Within two minutes of examination the vet determined it was simply cedar allergies and to try a shot. Dr. Doolittle Jr? Amazingly $65 later we were off and watched Panda come roaring back to life within hours. They then said dont make an appt and waste money , just come back in and get a booster shot for $25 and she would be good for many months. Amazing staff, great prices, honest diagnosis. My regular vet suggested a preventative dental cleaning for my six-year-old lab mix. I called around and Best Vet's price was about half of what my vet was quoting me, and the reviews looked good. When I brought her in this morning, they told me her teeth are in great shape and that a cleaning would only strip them of their natural enamel. They even took a couple minutes to clean off a little buildup on her canines. I really appreciated their honesty. If they weren't located so far from me, I would start bringing my dog here for her regular checkups. read more

So, we just kind of threw ourselves into this whole "dog ownership" thing. We don't know squat about dogs.... So when my aunt found out or puppy wasn't on heart worm or flea medication she about slapped me across the face. I visited Best Vet to avoid my aunts wrath and to get my puppies last shot. Everyone at Bestvet was extremely nice and professional..... even after my dog peed on one of the techs. I would have been angry at my dog, but I would have peed on someone if they were holding me down and sticking something up my butt too. They exam fee was a reasonable, about 38 bucks.... not bad for peace of mind. I also was able to get my medications while there with help from the vet. Bestvet is awesome. I recently had my very senior 15 yr/old boxer euthanized here (and she'd previously been a patient). The staff and vet were so incredibly kind and made a very sad situation bearable for me. They treated my old lady and me with so much respect, and they also did a stamp/imprint of her paw after she had passed and included it with her cremated remains for no additional cost. They also included a condolence note signed by all of the staff. I continue to take my other two older boxer boys here, since the vets are so good and my dogs (who normally hate going to the vet) really like coming here. The vets are really great, and the staff is also amazing. The receptionist had an attitude and kept trying to insist I bring my 60lb completely untrained Malinois (I had just gotten her this week) in with me despite her being crated in the car with the AC on full blast. There were dogs just walking around with no leash on in the waiting area or on flexi leads without a length locked. They also kept insisting that all of my dogs problems were caused by her not being spayed, and insisting that I get her spayed THAT DAY and everything would clear up. This Veterinary Office is aptly named. They really are the Best Vet Office I've ever taken my cats to. The staff is incredibly sweet and patient. I rarely have to wait long when I arrive at my scheduled appointments. Their prices are fair, and you can tell they all really love animals. Dr. Bob is just awesome. He has never tried to sell me on something that wasn't necessary. When I took my male cat when he wasn't eating and had a fever, he gave me a few options. One of the options was surgery (in case there was a blockage) and it would have been pretty expensive. Dr. Bob actually recommended the less expensive option, saying "that's what I'd do." I'm telling you, they have some cat whisperers. My honey is taking our new puppy there today, and I have every confidence that Dr. Bob and his staff will treat him with the utmost care and not take any shortcuts. I'm an overprotective, worrying cat/dog mama and this place really put me at ease. read more

I have never experienced the long waits that others are complaining about, but even if I had, I would consider it a fair tradeoff for them always finding a way to fit us in when my cat is sick. In spite of the fact that I'm a terrible worrier, I tend to favor a more conservative approach in regards to health care - mine as well as the cat's! - and I appreciate that Dr. Bob seems to lean in that same direction, as well, seeming to prefer to start with the least invasive option and still somehow managing to keep me calm while I'm busy imagining the worst. I just read that 1 person was upset about a wait. Pshhh... Not for me, They were quick, prompt, and loving. I literally waited maybe 15 mins. Honestly, I don't care how long I have to wait for Dr. Bob. No, SERIOUSLY! He is worth it! My dog had a HUGE tumor on his tongue! He told me that this is a really an unknown and unpredictable outcome type of procedure, but we gave it a shot. He gave me a few more months with my fuzzy guy. They even helped me by carrying him out to the car for me after his surgery. Even though Murphy made a mess of the vet tech's shirt. (I think that's his title. Awesome should be added to it!) Sadly, It looks like Murphy is getting to the end of his luck. We may have to come see Dr. Bob again to say goodbye to my little Murphy AKA Murphy's Law, but Dr. Bob gave me more time with him. I know that he and his AMAZING STAFF will treat my Murphy with the same love that they showed him before. And not just my Murphy, but also ME! Dr. Bob sat with me before his surgery and he was kind, caring, and as reassuring as you can be in this situation. You really want drive thru service quick? Why? I would rather wait for a Doctor that I know I is taking his time and showing this amount of love and attention to ALL of his patients. That may mean I have to wait a while and I will! The name says it all. It probably is the best vet I've been to. This place has awesome prices, and they are willing to work with you to get you what you want and can afford. The vet here is very straight forward and frank. He could have pushed a pricy flea + tick medicine on me, but instead recommended that I just get the flea meds since my dog stays indoors all day (no real exposure to ticks). I love everything about this place. When my adopted dog was diagnosed with heart worms, I was devastated. (Thanks for the heads up adopt-a-dog-agency.) Apparently there was some national shortage of heart work medicine to treat it. My other vet told us "With the amount of immiticide (the drug needed to treat) we can either save your big dog, or 4 chihuahuas.... So we're going to put off treatment of your dog until we find more from other locations." YOU'RE KIDDING, RIGHT?! In a huff, I turned to Yelp and literally blocks from my house was Best Vet. Thank GOD I found them. Immediately they were willing to treat my dog (at a fraction of the cost my old vet was charging.) They were friendly, were able to see my dog quickly and I quickly fell in love and are switching our animals over to Best Vet, as we are under a rather expensive contract with the old vet. Most recently I brought in my devil cat for shots and some allergy relief. By devil cat I mean that he's flat out Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde with people he doesn't know. "Oh I love you... Pet me... Look how sweet I am.... DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!" (Commence shredding you to pieces when you least expect it.) I called in my concern and was reassured that they had cat wranglers. Cat Wrangers INDEED! Like a pro they man-handled my crazy cat, but in a gentle way knowing that its craziness was still my baby. We got in and out without a single scratch. AMAZING. The prices are right. You know what's really, REALLY difficult to find in Austin? A great reptile vet. (I know, it's counter-intuitive considering the "Keep Austin Weird" culture...) Anyway, if you find yourself in such a situation, look no further than Best Vet. Seriously. They have a vet tech who is a former snake breeder and owner, and he is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable! He spent an hour and a half- YES! AN HOUR AND A HALF- talking to me about the ideal environment for my baby Winifred. Not only that, but together with Dr. Bob, they came up with treatment plan that completely fixed my sweet angel and helped her grow up into the big 6.5 ft girl she is today. Respiratory infections are no joke, and they prescribed a highly effective and reasonably priced treatment for my big girl. I live off of William Cannon and they are sooo worth the drive! Update on my previous review 01/11/2014 - at the end of my appointment, Dr. Bob stated that they would call me the next day to follow up (to see if I had any additional questions and see how Kola was after her first visit). It has now been a week, and I yet to receive a call. As a result of the lack in communication, I have decided to reduce my rating. I personally believe if a vet says they are going to call, they had better call regardless if it's only a follow up. Most importantly because you're putting the trust of a family members well being (and possibly life depending on the severity of the visit) in their hands. I even allowed a week to pass before deciding they are not going to call at all, and needed to update my review. This is unacceptable and does not bode well for our possible future with this particular vet. Another update- 01/15/2014 After seeing my negative update, I got a very sincere and apologetic call from the vet. He clarified that my non-follow up call is not a common practice and that this issue was immediately addressed to his staff in their meeting (this morning I believe). He also apologized for his poor bedside manner and let me know that, should I come back, if I do not feel he is "extremely charming" to feel free to speak up. Additionally, if I have any further questions or concerns, I am welcome to call at anytime and ask to speak with him. The fact that he personally called to apologize and rectify the situation earns them the opportunity for a second chance in my book. read more

The care and help that they give my doberman (Anubis) is wonderful, we have used them to get his ears cropped which they did amazing job. They have also done surgery to remove a growth on his shoulder and did some great work. Thank you Dr. Bob! Our kitty Jingle is doing great. The nearby vet gave me an estimate of $2,000 to unblock my kitty's urinary tract, something that had to be done to save his life. I had no idea what to do; I couldn't afford that. Eventually I was referred to Dr. Bob, who charged me less than $200 to unblock the kitty's urinary tract. My first time here. My dog Pumpkin and I had an amazing experience. Everyone was really helpful and they really cared about my babygirl.

I have been going to Dr Bob for year ever since he was at the previous location further up on Anderson Mill. We have a 40 pound golden retriever mix and a 2lb teacup chihuahua. I trust them 100% there and love all his employees. There very nice there and treat our animals well. Dr Bob is gentle and explains everything u need to know and whats going on with your pet. He has done surgery on the chihuahua without any problems whatsoever!!!! The only thing I don't like about going there is how hyper my crazy attention wanting dog can get lol. read more

I can't possibly put into words how happy we are with Dr. Bob and his entire staff. Never have I been made to feel more welcome, nor have my pets been more cared for in the most sincere manner. We had to say goodbye to an elderly kitty, and they were incredibly empathetic, and kind. Our big goofy Catahoula has had allergy problems for years now, and this is the first place that has treated him successfully, and for reasonable prices.
