I will start with positives: 1. I love their burritos in a jar! Quinoa instead of rice with beans is so refreshing and easy on the digestion. And delicious! Mostly sullen employees that make me feel like I'm bothering them by ordering something. I prefer shiny bright personalities to help me, like the employees at Iconik or Ohori's. 2. The music is so loud I have to put in silicone earplugs and headphones on top just to concentrate on my work. 3. The internet is super slow. 4. Their new barbecue place next-door is totally lovely. I love that it is local organic and handmade. My husband hates the regular coffee here. I always get an iced mocha, and I think they're pretty good. I like the people too. The vibe here is easy, there are lots of hipsters, artists, and entrepreneurs. Wandered in hoping to get my normal to go cup that I get from every other coffee establishment of a steamed coldpressed coffee and was looked at aghast by the millennial with the sparsely populated handlebar mustache who piously told me he would not be making anything besides steamed milk on his machine. I've traveled to many states and ordered this backwards beverage of mine all the time at both small locally owned establishments and chains to no harm. I have worked at coffee houses where I have made these myself on espresso machines. His patronizing and self rightous tone caused me to smile in vacant response and instead took two light roast coffee's to go. They were average, unlike the service which was subpar. read more

Very mellow place to get a nice espresso or cortado. They recently changed from Stumptown Coffee to Coava and I like it more. I think it's a slightly darker roast, not like Ohori's (which I also like a lot), but definitely less "bright" than the Stumptown. I love the bike frames and jerseys on the walls, and cycling groups stop in often post-ride for food and coffee. The coffee is good and there is one standout on the food menu: Breakfast burrito, brisket and red. Trust me on this one! read more

I love the location and the coffee, which, if I remember correctly, is from an Oregon company (whom I LOVED and am glad to come across here in Santa Fe). When you become a regular, they remember your name. Burritos are good. Service is fast. Make sure you remember what your order is, as that is how they call it out if it is a busy day. I was a barista for 7 years, have lived in SF, NY and LA. This is the real espresso spot in sante fe - completely beats out ohori (tried it, burnt the milk and they use a crappy espresso machine) when it comes to espresso drinks. Order a cortado (off menu). The milk was the correct temperature and the shot was extracted properly. La marzocco machine, mazzer grinders, sparkling water tap, rad adobe-style booths. Also, the staff was friendly and funny. There was a big crowd outside on the day we came and we were expecting to have to find another place to go to avoid a long wait, but we were able to walk right in and get service and grab a table. The coffee was delicious and worth the price and the breakfast burritos were 100 times better than you normally find at a coffee shop with just the right balance of heat and flavor. Aside from being in a strip mall, this place is the perfect craft coffee shop. We'll definitely be coming back to enjoy more of everything. read more

If you are serious about espresso this is the place to go. Quality coffee, drinks made precisely by experienced baristas. No froufrou stuff, just great espresso drinks made on a La Marzocco machine, and compared to most, excellent prices too. When I'm in Santa Fe, I know I can get a cap or espresso as good as home. I've worked in coffee for many years. Not just corporate, but in these fancy shmancy 4th/3rd whatever kinda wave you wanna call these joints as well. I have to say, everything was good. But it wasn't amazing. Just average, and everything tastes a little...pretentious. They don't offer any artificial sweeteners, so if you're diabetic, you're out of luck. They also exclusively make the chai lattes with almond milk or whole milk...so those of us who love chai, but can't handle regular milk and are not into this whole nutjuice craze, we're out of luck too. Bleh. I dunno. I just felt weird in here. It felt like I was choking on privilege, and yet the demographic of the clientele looked relatively diverse. Confusing. Anyway. I give it two stars. As far as coffee made correctly this place is the best I've found in Santa Fe. They use Stumptown beans from Portland and all their baristas are the real deal. My favorite is just a straight-up macchiato (which is nothing like its bastardized Starbucks cousin). Only drawback to this place is service is a bit slow, however that's pretty standard all around Santa Fe. I do appreciate that they take their time and make your drink the right way. You can also get some yummy bakery items and other food here (lunch and breakfast) although I have not personally tried these. I will share a little background information as we go, so you know me a bit better. I have relocated to Santa Fe from Los Angeles. I am an entertainment industry executive with thirty+ years working in the realms of film, music and talent management. I am a native Californian. I am also a United States Army veteran. I heard about Betterday from long time Santa Fe residents. The reviews were not good but, being a fair-minded guy in a new town, I thought I'd give them a chance. I walked into the coffee shop and noticed that all the booths/tables were taken. This kind of put me at ease and I thought that maybe things had changed (for the better) or there was new management or ownership. The only place I could find to set up my laptop was a thin, sliver-like table in the back near the restrooms. Needless to say, I didn't make a 'big stink' out of it! So I set up, went to the counter and ordered an Americano. Upon returning to my 'spot,' I began checking emails, researching, paying bills, etc. At one point - about forty-five minutes or so later - I feel a presence standing beside me. I look up to find a disheveled man with a ball cap, looking down at me while nervously rubbing his fingers together (I was seated, of course). I found this strange, but smiled and said, "Hey, what's up?" For a moment, I thought I was gonna be 'hit on!' He replied, "How are you doing?" I said, "I'm good, can I help you?" He said, "I've been trying to put my finger on it, but there's just something about you... You strike me as being dangerous. I am very protective of my girls who work the counter. From where you're sitting here, you have a clear line-of-site to check them out." I then realized (suspected) that this guy must be the owner! * I will disclose to the reader at this point, that I am half Scottish and half Indian (India). If I don't shave every few days, my facial hair grows in quick. I have been 'profiled' and harassed in other places as well - including the TSA at airports for looking Arabic or Persian. Once, I even heard them (TSA) say to one another as I was waiting in line to board the plane, "Let's search Mohammed." I know it's a sad state or reflection of our current world. Anyway, I replied to the (coffee shop) owner - completely taken by surprise at this 'welcome' I was receiving - "Excuse me?! What are you telling me?" Please know, dear friends, I never saw this coming... I was in an altered state - completely focused on my computer screen and tasks (as shared previously). I will mention here, as well, that no sooner had my girlfriend and I moved into our house in Santa Fe, that my sister called me to say that our mother (in Pasadena, CA) was very ill and in hospice! This, in and of itself, caught me by surprise. So we threw our clothes and other stuff into our travel bags and raced to California. I am sure you all know how expensive last minute air travel is... We had a choice to either not go or go - Now! So we drove - only stopping for gas and refreshments. Thankfully, we arrived in Pasadena with enough time to visit with my Mom, share a nice, lucid conversation, get her blessing, introduce her to my girlfriend and, sadly, say our goodbye. My mom passed the next evening. The reason I have shared this personal side note, is because, although we did that and I was now (this week) back in Santa Fe, I was in a surreal, altered state... All the things I have mentioned are equal to the ONLY things I had on my mind at the coffee shop that afternoon - the only available 'bandwidth' I had to make it through my day (and the rest of the week, for that matter). So, for me to go and sit in a grungy building, only to gawk at teenyboppers pumping coffee was not on my radar! Essentially, I was still in a state of shock from our harrowing move, the 26 hour (+ or -) round trip to California and, most importantly, losing my beloved mother! Our new place didn't have internet, yet. So here I was... I told the owner, essentially, that his accusations and 'energetic assault' on my nerves, were in very bad form, taste - and timing! Unable to 'wrap my head around' why this was happening... frustrated... and, now, getting angry, I said, "Sir, none of what you're saying applies to me... I am only here checking messages and taking care of my own, personal business. If you like, I will just gather my things and leave." Immediately, in response, he put out both of his arms in a gesture to say, "STAY!" He said, "Oh, no, no, it's alright... I'm not asking you to leave. I just want to let you know I'm getting an uncomfortable feeling about you." I said to him, "Wow, man, do you do this to all of your male customers who come in alone, haven't shaved for a few days and sit at this table?! The only reason I sat here is because all the other booths and tables were taken when I arrived." No response. He walked away. I finished my work. As I was getting ready to leave, he walks by and says, "Have a nice day." read more

We stopped in here every morning for coffee on our girl's weekend trip as it was walking distance from our airbnb. It was recommended to us by a local. Steamed milk was literally perfect. I've never had a better espresso before or since. Not joking, whoever made made my cappuccino deserves some serious praise (blonde bearded guy with glasses). I never knew what a cappuccino could truly be until that moment. Usually cappuccinos are lattes with extra foam that resembles a kid's bubble bath. Not that those are bad, but what I got was a different drink entirely. I could not tell where the foam ended and the milky espresso began. It was that smooth. He even made a latte art in it. LATTE ART IN A CAPPUCCINO! And I thought I knew coffee. Granted it was "wet" for a cappuccino, so I'm sure some snob might complain, but I could not be happier. The espresso was really good too. Very strong, but not bitter, with a smooth caramelly sweetness. Together, the perfect milk and perfect espresso made the best coffee drink I've ever had. I even saw a sign offering milk and espresso classes to teach you the mysterious art of barista-ing. Sadly, I don't live here, or I would have signed up on the spot. Oh well. This is one coffee shop in town that I am so uncomfortable going into. The baristas all seem to be so pretentious and unwelcoming. They look at you like "who are you and why are you here?" I have been on the verge of almost walking out because of the way I was treated. Instead I opted to get my drink to go. I was hoping that this was a one time bad experience, but every time I have tried "better day" they have treated me the same way. I have decided to take my business elsewhere. I have to reserve rating this place until after I come back and try the pourover coffee and the lunch items. For the record, the burritos and sandwiches that I saw prepared while at the cafe looked pretty solid, and fresh. I ordered a 12 oz latte, and it was good, but nothing special, considering everyone's rave reviews about how this place makes Stumptown and knows how to prepare it well. However, it also rated good, instead of having the gross burnt espresso taste popularized by Starbucks, so credit is due. I'll admit that I'm probably hyper-critical in this respect, since it annoys me when people have an attitude that Washington has a corner on good coffee and microbrews, and generally wish all my espresso drinks were prepared at a Chicago Intelligentsia, you know, if I'm not fortunate enough to be living it up in Italy or something :-P My primary detraction about this place is that it seems pricey. An extra shot of espresso is $1, and they don't automatically do double pulls on 12 oz drinks. Considering that it's in my gastrointestinal tract's interest to limit milk, $.75 for a milk substitution bumps the cost of a 12 oz double latte with almond or soy milk to $5.50, and this location isn't even that close to the touristy Plaza area! Also, a 10 oz pourover well set you back $5.25, and that's not even the reserve/premium option. These prices are enough to make me regret being too lazy to hand-grind my own beans and make coffee in my Chemex at home. These prices might be standard in the Bay Area, or the Northwest, but this is the Southwest, even if it is Santa Fe... Although I'm not a huge person to judge on ambience, preferring to rate places on the food taste, quality, and value, I think it's important to mention at cafes, since many enjoy working out hanging out at green for longer periods of time. Betterday's ambience is a mixture of rustic contemporary (metal, time flies made to resemble concrete, rough wooden tables). There is some outdoor seating, and several outlets. The atmosphere is more down-to-earth/less pretentious than other "next generation" cafes, but there's definitely a hipster vibe. (Take that as good or bad, depending on your preferences.) The music is a little bit loud for my taste. Random practical notes: There's parking, yay! There are plenty of outlets. Unfortunately the food menu items aren't posted on a chalkboard, so you can't decide while waiting in line, which sometimes is surprising long, though not slow. read more

So, the coffee is good. And I actually like the atmosphere. It's a pleasant place to hang out, and conveniently located for those of us who live on the west side. But (with a few notable exceptions) the baristas are incredibly rude. Like it's some sort of great privilege for them to acknowledge your existence, let alone make you a latte. Also, it's just sort of sad to be a hipster in Santa Fe. Santa Fe is not cool, and this is fine, but let's stop pretending we even have a scene, hmm? For Christ's sake, you're serving coffee in a strip mall. The owner also appears to be an asshole, which is a bummer. Can I say asshole in my review? I'd go to Ikonik instead if it were closer to where I live. Updated to add: they've worked on their unfriendly hipster barista issues. It's better. Not saying they greet you with a smile or anything, but a few of them are downright pleasant. It's still too expensive, but I'm willing to pay $4.50 for a cold brew if I'm going to use the wifi for a while. I look at it as renting the space. Huge fan of the addition of food. I'm not sure if I was there on a good day or what, but I didn't encounter a single grumpy barista! Actually the opposite. Exceptionally friendly, patient and helpful. I'm a little coffee obsessed & so I drove out of my way to grab a cup at Betterday and it was very worth it! I had a quad latte. & the StumpTown coffee they brew is really on my top 5 list! I also bought a pound of coffee, which I thought was reasonably priced. "you get what you pay for" right? Clearly I wasn't quite cool enough to hang at the shop, but I'm ok with that. The crowd is hipster to the tee, but I didn't feel uncomfortable in my 5" wedge and blazer either. Next time I'm in Santa Fe, I will absolutely make my way in to BetterDay. read more

First off, good customer service is important! Especially if you want repeat business. My mom and I walked in 20 minutes until close and the staff acted like we ruined their whole day. They had already turned off the espresso machine and they offered us old coffee. They asked if we wanted a free muffin otherwise they were going in the trash. When asked why they do not donate them instead of wasting them, they pretty much said don't know and don't care. So we took them and gave them to the many hungry people at a park downtown. Lovely interior; rustic whitewash bancos with wooden tables, bike frames and tinwork lamps for decoration, little stage where bands can play, an all around well-lit, chill Portland vibe. I used to like coming here for the breakfast burritos in a jar but now I won't be coming back. My boyfriend ordered a no meat burrito and it ended up having bacon inside. When he tried to explain to the manager what the problem was there was some confusion and the manager told my boyfriend to never come back and that his business wasn't welcome. That's just terrible customer service. The manager was rude and left my boyfriend with no time to explain himself before asking him to leave. Also the coffee sucks ass here - would rather go to Co-Op and buy better and reasonably priced coffee. This is the place to go for espresso in Santa Fe, hands down. I am a former barista and I spent seven weeks here in last summer. I tried every joint in town, but this was the place I found myself going to all the time. It's the real deal. Do yourself a favor and skip Ohori. All of their drinks are made correctly and with lots of care. They are the only coffee house in New Mexico that uses Stumptown beans (from Portland) for their coffee and espresso. You can also purchase the (freshly roasted!!!) beans for your own coffee brewing at home. Order the cortado (off menu). Just do it. It will change your life. Sparkling water on tap. Rad. The food is very filling and wholesome. I love the dank burrito and the wheat toast with homemade jam. The decor is great. I love the use of upcycled wood for tabletops and the Mexican blankets for cushions. Usually they're playing some great tunes. To the reviewers saying that the baristas are snobby, lighten up. Betterday Coffee is great. On the weekends, it is usually crowded. They open the huge garage door and have an open air atmosphere in the coffeeshop. Love it! This coffeeshop is very child-friendly! Not only do they have a play station, but they also have staff who are sweet and friendly with the cutie pies and patient with the irritable kids who don't drink coffee yet. Coffee itself is good. They use Stumptown beans (so close to my heart after living in Portland for 5 years). They do a great iced toddy. But the reason why I really like coming here, is the wonderful staff. They are relatable, kind and pretty funny overall. I like the way that they remember their customers. Joseph is awesome. Prices seem a bit high to me but in reality, they are comparative to other coffee places in Santa Fe. I find the name better day ironic being as how the few times I've been in the staff acts as if your order is an annoyance. My day is never better after coming here.
