Decided to stop here for brunch after walking through GVL. What a joke, I started with a $6 double shot of espresso that came out spilled all over the saucer, and all I got was a sorry it spilled, no offer to bring out a new one or even clean the saucer. Not to mention it was beyond watery, it could have passed for iced tea. Ordered the Wagyu steak and eggs. Eggs came out not cooked as ordered, steak was tough, even for wagyu, and overcooked. The Turkey club was essentially turkey on bread, forgot it was supposed to have bacon, tomatoes and lettuce. The kids chicken tender were great, I guess they should be for $12 dollars. There are so many amazing options in GVL, stay away from this one, they are obviously just riding on the coattails of a beautiful building and location. read more

If you're thinking of trying Between The Trees, you might want to let it simmer a bit. Like they should have done with our eggs. Thought we'd try the breakfast, made a 9:45 reservation, which we arrived 8 minutes early for. Greeted by the most uninterested host who told us we would be seated at EXACTLY 9:45 and simply waved us away from the stand. We walked past several empty and set tables to be seated. We had the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs (Wagyu Steak, 2 Eggs Any Style, Roasted Potato Hash, Pickled Fresno Chilis, $21). The steak was extremely flavorful, but very sinewy- so stringy that it was difficult to cut with the butter knife I had. We also had the Southern Lodge Breakfast (2 Eggs any Style, Sausage, Bacon, Buttermilk Biscuit, and we substituted potatoes for the "Anson Mill" Stone Ground Grits, $19). The "over medium" eggs we ordered came out so runny and underdone that we sent them back. The sausage didn't appear to have ever been on the grill. All three of the potatoes- we got another side order when the eggs came back because "they always send them out"- were not potato hash, but rather large rather flavorless lukewarm chunks. Service was slow throughout breakfast, but I sense our server was not yet up to speed on the system. We were left with dirty plates sitting in front of us for several minutes before I could catch her eye to get the check. To be sitting inside one of the most posh addresses in Greenville, this experience was underwhelming. read more

We decided to try the brunch and it was a special meal. Really good mimosas and Arnold Palmer. The basket of blueberry muffins were incredibly good to start. The lobster salad was delicious. I wish there was more lobster on it but what was there was delicious and the croque madame sandwich was off the charts. Very similar to a monte cristo which is one of my favorite all time sandwiches. I'm on a restricted diet (the whole reason we tried this place), so the healthy grain bowl was the way to for me. And my goodness, it was amazing. This is a beautiful, large restaurant on the river attached to a fancy hotel. The coffee they bring you is pressed at the table, the waiters have that fancy demeanor. I ate here at 8a on a weekday, there was no one here, and it was about $35-40 (with tip) a breakfast bowl with a side of sausage and coffee. If you want a healthy option downtown for breakfast... I think the egg white bowl here is the only option. It was a little cheesy and salty, but this is fancy Kakalaki fare so that's par for the course. We had a very nice dinner, the quality of the food was exceptional and well prepared. I will get to the problem that justifies the rating. The bread is worth the $10 or so, appetizers were octopus, bison carpaccio, and beef tartare. Entree was Pan Seared Atlantic Cod, excellent freshness and would order it again 5 stars. Another member had the trout and thought it was about 4 stars. The Japanese Striploin was a solid 5 stars. Beautiful setting and server was great considering it was the second week open. Almost forgot the old fashion was probably the best I've ever had. Here is my issue and it really put a damper on our dinner. Mid way through our meal my friend and I were coming back from the restroom and talking as we walked. We were essentially verbally assaulted by the African American hostess accusing us of walking in without a reservation. This is the same person that had originally seated us but apparently didn't remember. To make matters worse as we were walking away, she sent a parting shot smart ass comment, accusing us of ignoring her. Also, I made a mental note right then that restaurant wasn't even half way filled, so what is going on with this bizarre system of abusing patrons returning from the restroom. So we had to plead our case to be "allowed" to get back to our spouses and our 5 star meal on the porch. Snooty! We walked in to check about dinner there that evening and was told we would need reservations which was fine. A man walked past us and asked if there was a bar. The hostess said straight ahead and to the left. We said oh good, we can get a beer. She says to us, we have a full service bar in the basement that would better serve your needs. Um, ok. So we went downstairs and sat by the fire. Very nice! Our waitress was not very friendly and seemed more interested in chatting with the other staff. We ended up cancelling our reservation. We enjoyed our beverage and Flatbread in the Spirit & Bower Bar after checking into the new Grand Bohemian Lodge in downtown Greenville. The weather turned great and opted to dine outdoors for dinner. Started off with the Foie Gras Torchon on Gingerbread - I said outloud "its like Christmas in my mouth, in a good way". Nice and creamy foie gras and the verjus garnish was just the right touch of citrus to cleanse the palate. The Grilled Octopus' components were wonderful - olives, bacon, piquillos, artichoke quarters and sorrel, but unfortunately, the octopus was very dry and tough. The Bison Carpaccio was a wonderful hit (not gamy at all) with its bits of arugula leaves, pecan pieces, celery and Pleasant Ridge Reserve Cheese. The Chocolate Dessert was whipped coffee mascarpone over chocolate mousse and roasted coco flakes and the Sir Brandy Alexander Martini was a nice finish as well. Decided to have breakfast before heading out and that was delightful. the Brioche French Toast is a custard type of french toast, accompanied with lucious berry compote and vanilla bean cream. Ask for a side of Vermont Maple Syrup if you like that. The Southern breakfast was generous with my 2 eggs over easy, sausage and bacon, fluffly buttermilk biscuit and one of the best Grits I have ever. Beautiful restaurant, but both the bar area, inside the restaurant and outside dining areas smelled of the grilled fish during lunch/dinner service, which wasn't pleasant. We had an outstanding lunch at Between The Trees today. It was my Mother's 80th birthday and Kara, our server, went out of her way to make the day special. She even brought the pastry chef out to say happy b'day. The food was outstanding - croque madame, avocado toast with eggs and the cobb salad with chicken were all superb. This place was an experience. Classy establishment, beautiful atmosphere, and world-melting food. I had the beef tartare, and I'm still thinking about it today, and I had it weeks ago. It opened up a culinary world that I was not familiar with, and the flavor profile was immaculate. For my main meal, I had the veal, and the flavors were complex and it worked beautifully together with the carrots and the herbs. It was a portrait in food form. Finally, I had a chocolate desert that was extremely artful in presentation and rich in taste. Honest to god, one of the best restaurants I've ever been to, period. Ambience is amazing! The bourbon bar (basement) is a must visit. However, I expected more from a Michelin rated chef. Our entree (New York steak) was cooked perfectly but was so salty, it was almost inedible. The mushrooms (side) were spongy/chewy. The pear salad, although flavorful, only had a few thinly sliced shavings of pear. Drinks were excellent. Our server was very attentive, but wanted to take our complete order (salad and entrees) at same time as the appetizer, to "ensure proper timing of the meal". This is simply mgmt's attempt to pace the meal so they are in control. If I'm paying $100 pp for dinner, I will decide how the meal is paced. I recommend using hotel valet parking and restaurant validation. read more

I have taken my boyfriend, my group of girl friends, and my parents and all have thoroughly enjoyed. I appreciate that they use many local ingredient suppliers.
