San Bruno, Sausalito--places where if you search "grocery store near me," Molly Stone's is often the only real answer. They don't compete head-to-head with Nugget, Safeway, or Trader Joe's the way those stores compete with each other. They quietly monopolize convenience. From a business standpoint? Smart. From a consumer standpoint? Complicated. I did some research after a recent visit, and the pricing model is what really made things click. There was an article describing a product sold to Nugget, Trader Joe's, Safeway, and Molly Stone's at the same wholesale cost--around $7. Safeway sold it for ~$12. Nugget for ~$14. Molly Stone's? $22. That's not a premium--it's a statement.
