I have been here three times during my trips to Oxnard. It is a place we really like having breakfast in because of the friendly staff, unique breakfast choices and overall genuine feel. Most recently I had the chorizo with potatoes and eggs. They were seasoned so well and I actually finished the plate. My table also had their regular green chilaquiles and nopale omelet. We were all satisfied and "barriga llena, corazon contento." I want to give this breakfast favorite a 5, but sometimes they do forget certain items. If i could give them a zero. I would. I came in here to get a grub hub order, and they told time it would be 15 minutes. I sat here and waiting asked twice on the order. They kept telling me it was being worked on. After sitting here 45 minutes, they come and tell me that the order was sitting up there they never marked it to go. And they now have to remake it. Another 15-20 min.... I still had to wait almost 30 more minutes for this order. Staff didn't seem to care that they messed up. Super unorganized and rude. People who came and ordered to go got their stuff before me. I know the food was not for me but i rely on their time and efficient to do my job. I Love the classic coffee shop decor of this DTOxnard family owned eatery. And you know the regulars do make the drive to support this business because it packs up quick on the weekends even though the dining room is pretty big along with the outdoor seating to take advantage of the gorgeous mid-morning sunshine. Parking isn't a problem because on-site Parking is available. Also, there are loads of street parking since few really come downtown anymore - a sad reality. read more

Been here twice and on both visits, they were equally great! This is a Mexican type breakfast/lunch/brunch cafe. Their American style foods are every bit as delicious as their Mexican type foods. First time I came here, I ordered their chilaquiles and it was awesome. This time I got the deluxe biscuits and gravy, yummy as well. Great build on the flavors. Their service is definitely on point, we were checked on every so often and anything we needed or ordered was answered quite quickly even when they had lots of other customers to attend to. Recommendation: if you like chicken fried steak, get it. If you want some chicken tenders, they are super awesome here. If you want a small meal, this is not it, haha. BG's is an old school coffee shop. I've visited twice and breakfast was terrific. Everything all four of us had was great, just what you'd expect and likely want. And served quickly. My next visit for lunch, was satisfactory. One of us ordered the hot turkey sandwich. The turkey itself was very good, as were the mashed potatoes, the gravy.... not that good. I had the open face chili burger. I think it fair to say 'A-Burger' a few blocks away the better choice for a chili burger. The burger patty was OK, the chili was meh. Also, when I see "open face chili burger" I think both side of the bun, patty in the center and a copious amount of chili covering it all, as opposed to just enough to cover the patty. Boo-hiss. For lunch it's probably a matter of knowing what's good. Also, on our lunch visit the service was really slow, again as opposed to breakfast with was out in a jiffy! First time trying this place , and my experience was great! I ordered chilaquiles + country potatoes + eggs + refried beans . I substituted some items from the original order . I wrote the message when I placed my order to let them know what items I wanted to substitute and that I was ok with paying the difference. When my order was received I got a call from someone from the coffee shop to confirm my request and make sure that they got my order correct. And that itself let me know the food was going to be awesome. RARELY do places take into consideration customers request. Anyways def recommend. I saw a post on social media and it showed they have the monte Cristo sandwich. I couldn't wait to get in and try it. Place had several people inside eating and several waitresses working. We sat down right away and waited for someone to come take our order. Our waitress came quickly and my husband was undecided so she said she would come right back. As soon as she walked away he decided and I tried to get her before she was out of sight but she didn't hear me. Ok no biggie! Except for the fact that she took legit another 5-7 mins to come back. We ordered our food, I got the montecristo and my husband a hamburger. She never came back to offer more water or coffee. We sat right next to the coffee machine and I was legit about to stand up and pour myself some more but I saw another waitress and asked her. We drank our drinks fast and set them far to the edge of the table so she would know they were empty. Isn't that the international symbol for our drinks are empty?? Our cups were damn near dangling off the table and she walked by us about 5 times and didn't offer refills. Our food took a while but there was a lot of people so that was expected. We sat right by the cooks station so I could see everything coming out. I saw a hamburger and fries sitting up there for a good 5 mins and it didn't occur to me that it was my husbands. Apparently my sandwich took longer so my husbands food sat up there for 7-10 mins getting cold. His fries were cold! He doesn't like to complain so he didn't say anything. My sandwich was uhhh ok. I've had two other montecristos and this wasn't close to it. Don't they have ham? This one only had turkey. And not the best tasting turkey. Also they covered it in some kinda sauce. Boysenberry maybe. Yuck!! That ruined it for me. I wish they had put it on the side. My fault for not asking first. Once our food was brought back she never once came back. At first glance, this place looked like a hole in the wall in downtown Oxnard.....from my experience, this is where the best breakfast places always happen. Second good sign was the decor was a bit on the dated side.....that generally means the food will stand on it's own. I ordered the chorizo hash and eggs, and my wife had the ham and cheese omelet. By and far, hands down, some of the best chorizo I have ever had.....it was mixed with fresh peppers, onions, and potatoes. The house salsa was nothing short of fantastic, and the beans were cooked to perfection. As for her omelet, it was cooked to perfection and the ham was nice and thin sliced. My only complaint is we had waited so long to finally come here......and we definitely will be going back in the near future! read more

CLASSIC DINER in downtown Oxnard that's been serving grub since 1971. Great thing about BG's is it's strong support of fund-raising efforts by the various local youth organizations. Looks like they've maintained the vintage 70's look & feel. We sat ourselves but were well taken care of despite the hustle and bustle. After a quick look at the menu, we didn't have to wait long to order and sample a few items... *COUNTRY FRIED STEAK & EGGS: Thin cube steak is what's battered here and is on the smaller side of CFSs I've been served, still tasty and not too salty. Eggs were perfectly prepared. Hash browns weren't as crispy as I wanted despite the request for extra crispiness. *MEDITERRANEAN OMELETTE: Good sized omelette that was reasonably stuffed. Not chintzy on the feta cheese as well. Tasty mix of flavors that made this omelette yummy! *CHOCOLATE CHIP PANCAKES: They DO NOT serve waffles here (too bad for me), only varieties of pancakes and French toast. No kids options either. So the munchkin indulged in some Man-sized choc chip buttermilk pancakes. On the dense side, but with chips in every bite. He enjoyed a kid sized portion and had lots of leftovers for later. Everything was A-OK. Staff was friendly and attentive. Never had to ask for refills. Entry and parking is on BOTH sides of the eatery, with much more parking availability on the Oxnard Blvd. side. I usually go to BG's when I'm craving breakfast for lunch or if I'm in the area early enough to sit down and enjoy some good hot breakfast. Depending on the day, parking can be a hassle but this time we walked over from a few blocks away before the Christmas Parade started. The service at BG's is always pretty good. The hostess and waitress are usually the same person and they are always friendly and accommodating when seating or taking your order. As for the food, I ordered the country fried steak and eggs with hash browns, wheat toast and an orange juice. I've had quite a few of their meals but this is the one I've been going back for the most often. The country fried steak is really good.. The gravy they drizzle it with is what makes this a must try. Unfortunately they didn't have biscuits at the time but I'm sure pairing them together would be heaven. The eggs and hash browns taste as good as anywhere else so there is nothing special there but I hear their home fries are the business. When you wake up in the morning in a city far away from home and the first thing your friend suggests when you ask him "What's for breakfast?" is an egg mcmuffin, all this Yelper can do is hope that someone else comes up with a better suggestion. Thankfully, my friend had friends who are from the area and we met up at this local joint. There are a number of eateries located in Downtown, Oxnard with "cafe" on their front doors, but BG's Cafe seems to be the local favorite. Upon entering BG's Cafe you are greeted with the old town feel of a traditional American cafe, and served with a full plate. This was a great choice for breakfast. I ordered the Corned Beef hash brown plate with country fried potatoes and scrabbled eggs with a side of wheat toast. There was a lot going on with my plate, but it all fulfilled my stomach. The country fried potatoes were not the type of country fried potatoes I am familiar with. They seemed to be fried and smashed rather than pieces of potatoes cut and fried. Corned beef was not too salty, which is a good thing for my palette. My friend ordered chorizo and eggs, although I don't know his opinion of it because he talked less and ate more. His friends ordered a stack of pancakes which looked tall and healthy, another ordered chicken steak with eggs, and another ordered a common plate of eggs and hashbrown. On this lovely morning a lesson was learned between two men who had thought they had requested their eggs to be cooked the same way. One guy ordered his eggs as "eggs over easy" and expected to be served "sunny side up." Another man ordered a "sunny side up" and received a "sunny side up" order of eggs in which the guy who ordered "eggs over easy" could only describe his eggs as "eggs over hard." Lesson learned: cafe and kitchen talk has its own vocabulary, so be sure to know it before you order it. By the way, this particular cafe has won numerous awards for its salsa (which is apparently by its prominent display of awards). These aware winning salsa include its green and red salsa and, dare I hope to try it one day, its fruit salsa. Delicious. I'm glad the locals took us here rather than McDonalds.
