A fresh take on Indian food- this one! Walking in, you totally can't guess it's an Indian place. And the menu is also different from the traditional Indian restaurant. This one focuses on kashmiri cuisine mostly, which is the food from the north Indian state of Kashmir. We tried their lotus root fries which were oh-so-good. And for entrees, the lamb Rogan Josh and the eggplant and tomato dish, both of which were great. I loved the kashmiri tea too. It had little pieces of almond in there- precious! The masala lemonade wasn't the best. We ended with mango kulfi which was more like a mango cream popsicle with pistachios sprinkled. Although delish, I don't think it's really kulfi. I agree with other reviews that if you order their beer and bowl combos, it's an awesome deal. But if you order from their regular menu, the whole meal ends up being pricier than it should be. I've long been a fan of Bhuna's Goan Pork Vindaloo and beautiful beautiful naan bread. Tonight I stopped in for my usual, then saw the chicken fried sandwich among the specials. I was intrigued but hesitated; having been disappointed by such sandwiches recently (including an especially thin and dry version at Bae's.) But something said take the chance, and I'm absolutely delighted I did. The chicken itself was thick, moist, and captivatingly seasoned on a moist bun. The fries (actually wedges).... awesome. Crispy, and again, really well-seasoned. And of course, the obligatory naan I added was as rich and satisfying as ever. If you haven't tried Bhuna.... now's the time. GO. read more

Know that it's not a typical Indian restaurant, the cuisine is Kashmiri rather than the more popular Northern or Southern (vegetarian) classic. Their Happy Hour runs from 11-6 and is a good deal as it includes beer or a non-proof drink. I enjoyed their spiced lemonade, but it was very ice heavy. The Goan Pork Vindaloo is their specialty and it was a hit with our table. The Chettinad Chicken looked and tasted very similar to the pork, so if you want variety maybe don't order both. I'm generally not a fan of naan, but it was much better than average here. The lunch crowd was sparse and service was friendly and relatively fast. They offer some classic cocktails. There's much of the menu I'm eager to try so I'll be back. read more

After checking website for menu & latest hours, drove 14 mi to get my curry fix on, found parking, fed the Kitty meter only to discover Saturday night was dark! Checked Yelp for update to see where I went wrong, but no tell. Urggh now what. Bantam Tavern salvaged the parking we scored and a See See espresso Old Fashioned and Pfriem sparkling IPA went over really well..ahhhh, some relief. Re-parked for dinner at nearby Choice of India. Didn't cure my curry experience for the Indian full meal deal ambience but know now to go to Insta first in search of our Bhuna time. read more

Little things makes a difference.... To me This place just won my heart with those little things (garnish side on take out, marking on boxes showing care, careful sealing of cups and such) and super big things - like, flavors in foods and taste. I ordered take out - not the best way to enjoy any cuisine (methinks).... And still I felt I should write about my experience. Everything was different... welcoming different from most Indian (subcontinental) food around Portland. We ordered mixed fritters and calamari fritters (we call them pakoRa) - even that surprised me as I find all kinds of vegetables in the mix (rather than a standard mix of spinach, onion in most places). The batter was different and it kept my wife and I guessing what vegetable we will get next. Loved them. We ordered Dam Aloo. A curry with whole medium size potatoes. This was not the creamy style available in most places... yet, perfect for me to try with the nun we ordered. That reminds me - even the nun was way different here. I don't want to spoil the experience when you order them... but sure made me wonder should I have ordered more of them (yes, yes, I am on carb control ) Then the Chicken bowl and the Lamb dish we had. Each had it's own distinct flavors... yes, you can definitely differentiate the spices used - some cater to taste... and other to flavor. My only request to you is that - please don't ask them to make these dishes more spicy hot. That, in my mind, just kills the subtle flavors and taste of these fascinating dishes. (Kinda like French cuisine). I should mention two drinks I had. Mango Lassi and Kashmiri Tea. I usually do not order Mango Lassi and have them with food - because, I feel those are too sweet (more like dessert) and the use of thick yogurt makes them put a coat on the taste buds hiding other food tastes. In this case, I ordered them expecting to have them as dessert after food. Lucky I was to take a quiet sip of it during our meal - since I got intrigued with all other food I tasted earlier during meal. All I can say, the taste and consistency of this Lassi was very unique and can easily be used as a palate cleanser rather than taste suppressor - between dishes. The tea? Oh - the rich mix of flavor.... Unforgettable. I'd strongly advised not to use any sweetener and enjoy it with little sips. Exhaling first - take a little sip and then inhale after you fill the tea go past you throat. Kinda a way you enjoy a very expensive tequila or wine. I am originally from India and I know my food. This is the first time I wrote this long review... on any restaurant. I do not know who really owns this place (almost all the people I found there seemed not from the subcontinent) ... have a strong feeling that the chef has core Kashmiri food basis. I first had Bhuna when they were doing a pop up at Ruse Brewing and was excited to see they were open when I stopped by. I got the lamb bowl, and it was delicious! It was super flavorful with lots of tender chunks of lamb. Every bite melded together well. The server was also simply excellent and really attentive. I almost forgot I was at a fast casual place. She even checked in a few times on how the food was. My only complaint is my food could have been a little warmer, and I could have used a little more fennel. First time visiting. I got the mushroom naan, which was absolutely enough for an entreé. The flavor on the mushrooms was great, though too salty. Also had the lotus root fries, which were tasty, but not super notable. The chana masala was hearty and *very* spicy. Naan was pretty soggy, the lentils were flavorless and everything was under salted. The drink had way too much liquor, we couldn't tell what was mixed with it. I'm not sure what happened but every single dish and both of the cocktails were really really bitter! The flatbread was kind of soggy. All of the food was 30% under seasoned. Everything was quite pretty to look at but unfortunately, my tastebuds didn't agree with the flavors. The bitterness from this meal made me super sensitive to the bitterness in other foods for the next 24 hours or so. It was the weirdest thing. Lots of flavors going on, but bland at the same time. The very best Indian Restaurant in Portland area. We have had some absolutely delightful meals over the last 2 years. Foods are spiced to perfection and ingredients are are first rate. My favorite dish is the Lamb Rogan. The lamb is always tender delicious and expertly cooked. I glanced at this place before and was curious, stopped at my lunch break. Not too busy, which worked for me. Simple menus, you pay as you order and self-serve for water. First impression, might be a pricy but this bowl gives you a lot and by the time you finish it, you will be full. I got eggplant and tomato curry served with saffron rice, house made yogurt sauce and spicy (but good) chutney, and I liked it. I also want to try chicken tikka next time which I am some what particular about the sauce. A beautiful interior: elegant without being pretentious. We loved the picture of the chef and owner from when he was younger, standing side by side with his parents, that was a subtle wall decor. The creativity and taste in design extends to the dishes too! It was quite unlike any Indian food I've had before, not your typical fare at all. It was ART, and I laud the chef for taking me on a journey through his artistic expression! "Lotus Root Fries": my favorite dish of the night. Kind of like sweet potato, a little more subtle. Lightly salted. The mint chutney on the side was addicting, I wanted to put it on everything. "Kashmiri Mushroom Naan": the naan itself was phenomenal! I would've eaten it plain. The mushroom topping was bland for my tastes. "Lamb Rogan Ghosh": it was a little more gamey tasting and tough in texture than I'd expect from lamb. Was it actually goat? The seasonings were more sharp than I'm used to in this dish. I wouldn't order it again. "Chettinad Chicken": Delicious! Tender and slightly sweet. Paired with the wonderful yogurt sauce, definitely a fave flavor of the night. "Collard Greens/Kolrabi": Didn't love the flavor. Maybe I don't like collard greens? Interesting though, glad I tried it. "Eggplant": LOVED it. Eggplant was cooked to perfection: warm and soft but with still some weight to each bite. "Cardamom chocolate chip cookie": no cardamom flavor to speak of, but at least it was warm and gooey in the center. "Mango Kulfi": perfect way to cap the meal! Wonderful experience at Bhuna's! Delicious meal, service great and beautiful interior

We were excited to try Bhuna and were surprised by how disappointing it was. We recently moved to Portland from a part of the Bay Area with some of the best Indian food in the country. We were happy to find Bhuna and were hoping it could be a replacement for our favorite Bay Area restaurants but sadly it fell pretty short. We placed a pickup order and it was ready really quickly, which was great. I got a fried chicken sandwich which came with fries (doesn't say which sides it comes with anywhere on the online menu, so I was pleasantly surprised). The sandwich was good, but didn't quite live up to the hype. The pakoras had a weird after taste, possibly like rancid or old oil? We didn't even finish them. My partner got the lamb rogan josh a la carte which was an insultingly small portion for $17. It didn't taste good either, way too much cumin and the sauce was overly salty while the meat itself was under seasoned. My partner orders rogan Josh all the time and this is the worst he's had. He ate all of a couple bites out of the ~8oz of total food (seriously, the container was small and it was only half full). read more

Got a new favorite Indian restaurant! The usual favorites are here with rich and complex flavors = chana masala was yummy. And then different combinations like the mushroom naan, absolutely delicious, satisfying and fun. The vegetarian dishes would certainly make a carnivore happy too. I love Bhuna's food. It's delicious, and the mango-pickle ketchup that comes with their potatoes is one of the most interesting--and tastiest--condiments I've ever had. I also love their peacock mural outside! Some jerk tagged it, and they had it repaired, which is lovely. But boy howdy--portions have been steadily shrinking even as they've raised their prices. Service from the chef/owner has been vaguely hostile for years, but the food was so good I looked past that. Now I'm charged fees for placing a pickup order? AND pickup orders default to a 15% tip with no obvious way to remove it? Nope. You *can* remove the tip, but you have to edit your order and click through three different menus. This is overtly customer-hostile. I know margins are slim in the restaurant business, but alienating customers will make them slimmer, not fatter. I ordered from Bhuna regularly during the pandemic and tipped 25% for takeout specifically because I didn't want them to go away like so many other restaurants did. But times have changed: shrinking portions, rising prices and quasi-forced tipping for takeout? There's a line in there somewhere, and Bhuna has crossed it. The food is great, and the staff other than the chef/owner is reasonably friendly. The service isn't perfect, but that's not the problem here. The problem is the contempt for customers who love the place. read more

How to do it: Grab a menu, decide what to get, pay at the counter, go sit down. Menu: vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Some flavors were less intense than at a typical Portland indian restaurant but others were more bold. The unusual food choices makes up for the smaller menu. Food: Palak paneer - mild flavor and not intense enough. Masour dal - good flavor and texture Dum aloo- OK, not special Lotus root fries - good flavor, terrible texture - cooked earlier and microwaved? Fried potatoes with mango pickle- Interesting! Kashmiri eggplant tomato bowl - good! Tumeric rice - kinda standard Raita (yogurt) -good Would I go back? If I was in the area, probably. Would I make a special effort to go, probably not. read more

Friday evening early. Feels like a family place. My main dish from the kitchen came with the look of a person who had pride in what he made. He knew it was good and it was. The potatoes braised in Kashmiri spices were subtle with early spice and late medium heat. The vindaloo was balanced and flavorful. New Indian place in NW. Great space - vibrant! Counter service to order (not what I expected). Had the Rogan Josh, chicken chettanai, naan, palak paneer. The food came out in 3 minutes (obviously pre-prepared). The food really needed stronger spices, seemed like a watered down version of Indian. A good place to check out if you are looking for something a little unique. The happy hour menu here is not bad at all. You can get a bowl and a beer for $11. We ordered a few items from the happy hour and regular menu. The Goan Pork Vindaloo and Chettinod Chicken bowls were very flavorful. Both the meats are tender and breaks down easily. The Kashmiri Style Eggplant and Tomato was good and perfect for the non meat eaters. The fried green tomatoes were ok. The seasonal vegetables Pakoras were tastier. I really liked the food at this place. It came very close to the Kashmiri food I have had while growing up. We got dum aloo and rogan josh. The aloo was cooked well but I would have liked it to be little less boiled and actually fried on low heat ( the traditional way). It still tasted great with the traditional fennel sauce. The rogan josh was very well made. I would give the food a 5 star if the naan was slightly bigger and made in a more traditional style tandoor. The husband found this spot and we went and tried it on a week night. It's a cute spot and the service was pretty good. We ordered a couple different items: Goan pork vindaloo, Kashmiri mushroom naan with egg, Palak paneer, Dum aloo, and naan! Our favorite was the mushroom naan with egg. It was a complete dish on its own and the flavors were brilliant. The husband enjoyed the vindaloo and I loved the simplicity of the palak paneer. The only letdown was the dum aloo, wish it was a little more creamy and whole. And to end our meal, we got the mango ice cream bar with pistachios and it was simply perfect. Overall, Bhuna is a great place to try good North Indian-Pacific NW fusion food, and I'm looking forward to going back for more soon! read more
