Bhuna is incredible. I'm English, and we are pretty serious about our Indian food. For twenty years I have tried to satisfy my craving in this town, to no avail. Then came Bhuna, thank goodness. The food is consistently delicious. We usually order takeout twice a month, directly from their website. My daughter loves the eggplant and the chickpeas. I adore the pork. The whole menu is delicious though. We would be devastated if this place closed. Thank you for making this Brit happy. I am currently eating my leftovers for breakfast. I went to Bhuna for happy hour and it was great! The staff was extremely friendly and gave great recommendations since it was our first time in. The seasonal vegetable pakoras and naan bread were both delicious. The Bhuna mule was on the spicier side, but was still very good! I probably wouldn't order it again, but I'm glad I tried it. The Goan Pork Vindaloo plate was a good size. The rice and yogurt sauce were delicious, however, our pork was extremely salty. Two of us split one main dish, one starter, and one piece of naan bread, and we were stuffed. We will be back to try more! read more

It's always exciting to try a new Indian restaurant. Overall ... it was a bit underwhelming. The Kashmiri tea is similar to traditional Kashmiri kahwa, tea brewed with saffron strands and cardamom, served with crushed nuts, in this case almonds. It had a refreshing flavor, the spices leaving a nice after taste and not overwhelming. But at $6, that's an expensive cup of tea! Moreover there are no refills. That was a little disappointing. Among the appetizers and sides we ordered, the fried calamari was good without being exceptional. Would have liked some more of the savory tamarind chutney it was served with. The lotus root fries were okay too. The braised potatoes were the real disappointment. It's hard to get potatoes this wrong. The potatoes were all mashed up, not retaining and structure or texture as well as the dish being under seasoned. On average, the main dishes - rice bowls - were much better. The pork vindaloo was my favorite. Rich, spicy pork, well cooked. Very flavorful. The accompanying yogurt and pickles brought in some nice contrasting tastes. I think I'm generously rounding up a 3.5 star review. We went there second day after opening, so maybe some of the rough edges will be smoothed out in time. read more

We had a snack and cocktail outside at Bhuna on a lovely Friday afternoon. The weather was sublime, adding to the allure of the experience. It was "take out" only, and the cafeteria like operation involved ordering inside, waiting for your tray, and finding a seat outside. That was a detractor. Pricing was very reasonable, but the food was just mediocre. Yet, the Nan was one of the best I've tasted. Perhaps dining inside, with service, would allow the kitchen a chance to "do their thing." Reeeeeally tasty food. My friend and I split the lamb Rogan Josh bowl, veggie pakora, mushroom naan, and sides of the eggplant, kolrabi and potatoes. Everything was bright, colorful, beautiful. My faves and must-have recommendations are the lamb, veggie pakora, mushroom naan and eggplant. The pakora was prob the best I've ever had, using veggies that you don't typically see, like brussels sprouts and lotus root and served in an awesome cilantro sauce. Tl;dr: GREAT food served by wonderful staff with fun people-watching. If you've read my reviews previously then you may know that I live in the NW and like to frequent things in the area that are in walking distance. This place has always intrigued me but for some reason I always found myself elsewhere for food and drinks. That was a mistake because after coming here, I knew I would be coming back. Bhuna is on Irving and 21st avenue in the same block as R&R and Beau Thai. I usually walk my pup around this block a few times a day and always smell great things coming from them. On a sunny Saturday afternoon we decided to give Bhuna a try! We brought our dog Hazel because we all love a good patio (and Hazel gets whatever scraps fall onto the ground). It's counter service so we claimed a table and went in to order our food. I got the Kashmiri Lamb Rogan Josh and my girlfriend got the Chettinad Chicken, but per uzhe we had to order appetizers and a drink: Chickpea crusted calamari, naan, and the Bhuna Mule. The calamari was very tasty and tender, not overly fried and oily like a lot of other places with calamari. They place it on a cilantro-lime chutney that was just a tiny bit spicy, but not spicy enough to turn off my (spice-sensitive) girlfriend from it. The naan was great! Never complained about naan before-- carbivore for life. The Bhuna Mule was tasty! Never had a mule of this color (shoutout turmeric) but it was very floral and tasty. Was it missing the copper mug? Yes, but I would not have appreciated the color in such a drinking apparatus. The entrees were VERY tasty! Love tasting all of the toasted spices as the tenderness of the meat hugged its sauce. The turmeric basmati rice was very good! I am a little sensitive to the peppercorns that they have ~peppered~ in there but overall it was delicious and provided good mouth-feel. Naan, meat with sauce, yogurt, with the cucumber raita was heaven. In the past year the homeless/displaced population has grown in NW, with a spike coming around the time of teargas use in the DT protests. While this population tends to keep to themselves, it makes for a very... dynamic and interesting environment. Ordered takeout last night. 2 Rice bowls and 2 side dishes. The pork vindaloo and chicken chettinad rice bowls were tasty but the portion size was small. Was more like a lunch bowl size. The 2 side dishes: Dum aloo - was bland but was easily fixed with salt. Palak paneer - it was surprisingly bad. Tasteless and no salt was the least of the problems. There was barely any palak (spinach) in it. The worst part was the paneer smelt and tasted like it was fried in bacon fat or fried together with bacon. The bacon smell was pretty strong in the paneer. I'm not a vegetarian so I ate it but not being a fan of bacon this ruined the paneer dish for me. So to summarize only the rice bowls were good but given the price and portion size I'm on the fence if we'll go back again. read more

My wife and I came for a Saturday lunch at the recommendation of some of our friends whose opinions on Indian food we trusted. The restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived (12:45pm on a rainy Saturday), with only 4 parties counting ourselves (though a large group of people did arrive when we were done eating). It's a counter order place, quite casual, clean decorations, music a little loud. Service was prompt and polite. We ordered: - Kashmiri mushrooms - Pork vindaloo + Kashmiri tea (the happy hour combination) - Eggplant and tomatoes (the happy hour dish, we skipped the drink) - Mango kulfi bar for dessert The tea was served first. Strong cardamom taste, not bad overall, not too strong. Beware that it has almonds. The mushrooms came on a piece of naan. The presentation was quite nice with a complementary color palette and a sunny side egg. The naan was nicely charred on the bottom for the crispiness. The wide variety of mushrooms served (did I see wood ears and morels in it?) was delicious, but you could argue that the micro-greens took away from the intensity of the flavor and made it more fusion-like. Overall decent: 3.5/5. The pork vindaloo was amazing. Well seasoned, spicy but not overly so (be warned: the heat will catch up to you slowly as you eat), complemented well with the fried onions, raita, and other accompaniments. I wasn't particularly hungry, and I still finished the whole dish - sure, it wasn't a lot of food, but I also couldn't stop eating! 5/5. The tomatoes and eggplant dish was very good as well. The eggplants were tender but not soggy, rich but not greasy - a well-composed dish. 4/5. The mango kulfi (with pistachios) was excellent. Such strong mango flavors and classically paired with the pistachios. The whimsical presentation style - served as a popsicle - was nostalgic. All for $4? 5/5. Overall impressions: good service, thoughtful presentation, excellent food (my wife especially appreciated the fact that they don't ask for spice levels when you order - you have it the chef's way), good portions at good prices (2 people will be happily full on $30), especially with the all-day happy hours. We saw this place driving to Forest Park for a hike. After we decided to try it! They were open, had seating outside, and the food looked good. They have a different flair to their food which we liked. Lots of spices and flavors. Grateful for small portions since food was surprisingly unappetising. Lotus root fries were over salted and so thin we just tasted salt. We ordered two different dishes, eggplant and lamb, and they both had the same taste, which was essentially one spice overpowering the whole dish. I think the spice was mace, the spice not the defensive spray, although I can't be sure of either. We like spicy food, but usually expect some nuance. The lassi was refreshing, not too sweet, and a little salty. The rice was very well flavored and fragrant. Pakoras had great seasoning and variety. Visited Bhuna, to celebrate my Father in-law's 70th Birthday, it was definitely a good choice. Their menu is small, fewer options (prefer great tasting fewer options over average tasting numerous options anyday), we ordered most of the menu except for Pork Vindaloo and Palak Paneer. Most Indian restaurants use same/similar sauces for several dishes, therefore end up tasting almost same. No dish tasted same as the other which is a plus for this place. Each dish had it's on distinct flavor. I'd definitely revisit. I am not familiar with Kashmiri cuisine much, but my take on food was, it tasted great, each dish had unique taste, food was slightly salty to my taste but to an extent that it ruined anything for me. My mother in-law is Kashmiri and she says the food was very close to Kashmiri cuisine, and that's as authentic as it can get. The happy hour is only $11, it runs from 11am - 6pm everyday, and you get an entree (rice, yogurt, and a curry) plus a beer! Wow! The food is delicious and tastes homemade. Being married in J&K family I was suprprised to find a Kahsmir based resuturant in Portland. However, the food left way too much to be desired. We ordered Pakaudas which were not cooked properly and I could feel raw potateos in every bite. The chicken starter was not cooked well too. The green chutuny had no salt. The Dum alu again came with no salt at all. The Palak Panner was the only saving grace in the order. While the concept of the resuturant is great, I think they have issues with quality control. We went for dinner last night, and returned for lunch today. First off, I put 3 stars for atmosphere because it is casual and kind of plain. Not unpleasant at all. At night, when the bar is in action, it's more cool and modern, plus there are nice decorations from the owner's home country around. Both times I was there I loved the chill playlist. It's very clean, and has funky modern accents. But... the real deal about here is the food. GO NOW! My partner and I stumbled on this place just reading the menu in the window. We are vegetarian and wondered if the small menu would be expansive enough. I think they have a smallish menu so they can do the dishes they do perfectly. Each thing we had was spiced perfectly and individually and nothing tasted like anything else. What was supposed to be crispy was crispy, the vegetables were not broken down and soupy, the sauces weren't gloppy gravies... the cooking was top-tier. We got "special" sides and I wish they were all constant menu items. The green beans were roasted and slightly charred, tossed with ginger slivers and toasted garlic and chili flakes and garnished with cilantro and radish. That's a lot of effort for one dish! The palak paneer was in a light refreshing sauce and the spinach was firm, and the cheese was fried perfectly. The rice that came with it was lemony, and the raita tasted cool and fresh. The dressing for the salad was a standout, with mustard and tiny red onion dice and citrus... I would go back for the salad alone.... I thought it would be "fine, a salad" and it was an exciting dish. The best thing we had was collards with kohlrabi (kind of like turnip) in a deep-tasting smoky spicy sauce that was light, not stewy. The greens were tender and not cooked to death. And guess what? It is CHEAP for what it is. Really reasonable for such elevated dishes. Last night we had light, buttered and salted warm naan, and a cauliflower dish with cumin. So delicious and again, different from normal Indian restaurants in the U.S. They also have a good cocktail list. Don't be afraid of the unfamiliarity of the menu. I came with 4 friends and we ordered a bunch of items. Once we ordered, the food came out 2 minutes later. Two friends ordered the chicken and lamb bowls, which they both said tasted great (but not as good as other Indian places you'd get in Beaverton or Hillsboro). The portions are also much smaller than anticipated (each had the full meal + a side of naan and were satisfied). The lamb itself was also luke warm and would have been better had it been a hotter temperature. I ordered a side of palak paneer and naan. I'm afraid the chefs may have forgotten to salt the dish, because the spices were apparent but it lacked any salt whatsoever. I had my friends try and they also didn't taste a hint of salt. The naan is a little more on the drier side than I'm used to. I personally like more chewy, buttery naan than this place offered.
