I give out 5 stars sparingly. This restaurant knocked it out of the park on every single level. We were warmly greeted, the hospitality here throughout our meal was astounding and noteworthy. The manager or owner checked with us several times. Our waitress was patient and explained the sauces and banchan that came with our BBQ order. The hostess complemented my hat, of course, and got extra points for her good taste in menswear. We ordered some roasted corn tea and the Dynamite Combo for two. The tea was terrific. The combo was chicken, squid, pork and shrimp. The BBQ was electric and was sunk into the table. We cooked some but we had quite a bit of welcome assistance making sure it moved along properly. The banchan included potato salad, daikon radish, bean sprouts, kimchee, seaweed. All really good but my favorite was the kimchee. We also ordered some brown rice and the meal came with 3 sauces and a salad dressed in chili sauce. The marinade for this combo was really spicy but not over the top inedible by any stretch and was great with the sauces. I don't know the cuisine well enough to name the sauces or describe them adequately. I am not a newbee to Korean but still am not an expert either. I have eaten enough to know that this was one of the best Korean meals I have ever had. I had a terrific time. The bill with tax was $40 or so. We weren't hungry when we left so I thought it was a pretty fair value. We left with smiles on our faces and were saddened that we don't live here. Many thanks were imparted upon our departure. I'm usually wary of restaurants that combine two completely different cuisines, in this case Japanese and Korean, because it's like, pick one and do it right! Bi Bim Bap does both right! We started off with the Tiger Roll and Salmon Tsutimi. The former had this red wine sauce - definitely not typical roll accoutrement - that was phenomenal and went nicely with the shrimp tempura. The salmon roll came topped with fresh, melt-in-your mouth salmon and was also quite good. But of course the best feature of this restaurant is the table-top grill where you can char your choice of meat from the typical (marinated beef and chicken) to the more exotic (beef heart, anyone?). We got there at 8 p.m. on a Saturday and it was naturally busy but we got seated within 20 minutes. The namesake dish -- bi bim bap -- is meh. But the sushi and barbecue more than make up for this lackluster dish. My only complaint -- where is the bar while you're waiting??? They have great alcoholic beverage offerings, including a sparkly sake cocktail that comes in a variety of flavors. This drink is quite pricey though so it's a good thing I only got one. read more

Once in a while they update the menu, so I never get bored. Their regular lunch menu is also pretty good, especially soups. This place was recommended to me by a Korean family recently. We were greeted warmly and promptly upon arrival and we were seated at a BBQ table with a huge extractor fan above it. The fans work really well - there was no hint of smoke or fatty smell in the restaurant - but they do make it rather chilly. We ordered drinks and apps and bi bim bap to eat. Everything was lovely and service was great! My only criticism is that the wine pours were quite small. The Japanese beer on draft was very good and well kept, however. After my third and final disappointment with the Black Rock Bar and Grill in Novi, I headed over across the highway to the Bi Bim Bab Korean BBQ and Japanese Restaurant. I was greeted by a smiling, happy hostess. I was seated right away at a BBQ table. Ordered a beer, it was on the table within 2 minutes. Ordered the Kal Bi, which is beef rib marinated in BBQ sauce, which I cooked right on the grill at my table. Delicious! The side dishes of kimchi, seaweed, potato, pickled turnip, pickled bean sprouts, spicy bean paste, salad, rice, etc. are always wonderful. The service was most excellent, top notch, always attentive, re-filling my water, etc. I definitely was not neglected here. They even brought me an extra potion of pickled bean sprouts, even though I never asked for it, but they saw that had emptied that dish first. They came out with a dessert, which was a few apple slices topped with caramel sauce, at no charge to me. Bi Bim Bab has a great selection of sushi, along with a vast array of beer, wine, spirits, and sake. This place is always a pleasure to go to, and I will be back! read more

Without a doubt, my favorite place to eat. My preferred dish is hwe dup bap, but you really can't go wrong here. Love the Bi Bim Bab. The hot stone bowl makes great crispy rice and the combination of flavors is delicious. On the rare occasion we have leftovers, they don't last long. Whoever's gets to the fridge first wins. Enjoy a meal where you (or a server) grill at your table. Don't be afraid to ask for suggestions. The hosts and servers are friendly, personable and helpful. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Michigan! I am a HUGE fan of korean BBQ and I have never had a bad experience here! True, if you have been to the all you can eat korean bbq places, this place is a tad bit more expensive but you pay for the great service and quality! The meat (brisket and beef tongue) are always top notch fresh and the portions are just right. What I like about Bi Bim Bab is the constant good service. With korean bbq, you get alot of dishes, banchan and so many sauces and what not so your table is so packed. The servers are always checking up on you to make sure your tea and water are filled and that your grill is good. If not, they change your grill. My favorite is definitely the beef brisket, shirmp tempura appetizer and the tempura ice cream. I love all the banchan and the spicy salad is superb! My favorite waitress is Mei, she is the cutest and always comes to your table with a smile. The location may be hard to find though because its in an office building and the sign can be easily missed. It took us a while to find it too the first time. I use to come here everytime I finish shopping at twelve oaks. It is a bit far from where I live but the drive is always worth it. I only ever came here for the self cook korean bbq so I cannot say much about their cook to order things. But I did have several appetizers and soups and they were all fantastic! We always mean to try out the rest of the menu but the korean bbq is just so good so we could never pass it up. And I always go home super satisfied. I love me some bbq! I had not been expecting such good Korean food in Michigan, but this place is legit. They are called Bi Bim Bab for a reason. Because their bibimbap is the bomb. Ambiance: Pretty hidden place, you have to drive around the back (e.g. Main Street or Paul Bunyan St) and park in an empty-looking lot. Head down to the lower level of the building and you'll find it next to a Starbucks sign. The place itself is nice and clean with a classic theme of dark black wood, bamboo, and bright greens. Service is very friendly and they'll help you out with grilling of you're new to the Korean BBQ of the menu. The menu itself is aesthetically busy and non-classy but whatevs. Food: First of all, the Bi Bim Bap is pretty solid. I've had better hot sauce at other restaurants but the ingredients are fresh, tasty, and in good proportions. I've been here 3 times for the BBQ and it's good so long as you know how to cook the meats. We like getting the beef tongue, bulgolgi, and kalbi. The quality is excellent, just remember the meat is thinly sliced so get a quick sear on each side and try to keep the meat medium rare because it will continue to cook to a medium/medium-well once you take it off the heat. Leave the meat on 30 seconds longer than you should and it will easily become chewy and possibly dry. Wasn't the fan of the spicy chicken because it lacked depth and savoriness. Again, the severs will help you get started cooking if you're uncomfortable doing so. If you haven't tried it, ask for "steamed egg" because it's an amazing dish of fluffy scrambled eggs steamed in a savory broth. Finally, in terms of the sides, I had no complaints. Kimchi was good and their salad is excellent although I've only gotten the salad with larger groups of people. Oh and you get some complimentary fruit to finish, healthy and delicious! Overall this place is very good, I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've had although cooking the BBQ well requires a little practice. I think the hot sauce could be a little better/spicier but there's not much else I would change. Prices are pretty typical for Korean restaurants that aren't shady hole-in-the-walls. I love their Korean BBQ here! I came alone and was not judged for ordering the beef brisket all to myself, ha. The owner (I'm guessing?) welcomed me with a smile, even if she was on the phone with another customer. My server showed me how to cook it before leaving me to fend for myself, and made sure to keep checking on me. My only qualm is that I've been to other places where it is unlimited BBQ for less. As out-of-towners, my coworkers and I decided on Bi Bim Bab based on the Yelp reviews. It's hidden in a mall, which reminds me of many restaurants in China, except this one was creepy and quiet because all the other shops were closed. We finally found the place and were greeted by a mass of Asians at the front. There were maybe two or three other groups there, so the restaurant was relatively empty. One of the waiters awkwardly directed us to one side of the restaurant, then changed his mind and led us to the other side. We ended up in a private back corner, shielded from most of the restaurant's view by the wall. We joked that they put us back there because our group was mainly Caucasians and they didn't want to tarnish the authenticity of the restaurant. I'm sure this wasn't the case. For a group of 5, we ordered about 5 or 6 plates of the Korean BBQ, a vegetable bibimbab, and some sushi. Everything was pretty good but seemed way overpriced. I expected the service to be better. Our waitress was nice but not very professional. I'd probably be more inclined to give it 3 stars if my company hadn't expensed the meal. I have no problem paying more for good food and service if it's worth it, but in this case it wasn't. read more

This was my second experience with Korean food, and it also happened to be my second date with Boy. I was skeptical about trying a new place, especially since I was such a newb to Korean food, but my skepticism was ill-founded. To date, this is the best Korean food I'm aware of. I have since gone here quite a few times, but I usually order one of the namesake BiBimBabs. If you're not familiar with this dish, familiarize yourself. Because you're going to want it again and again. It's basically just a bunch of stuff thrown into a hot stone bowl, with rice, and an egg on top. Veggies, meat, seaweed... the whole kitchen sink, and right on top, an overeasy egg that you kind of smush into the rest and chow down. I'm a fan of most Asian foods, and I do have a tendency to go for the rice and noodle dishes. This by far takes the cake. I could eat this at least once a week. Oh, and all the banchan (small accompaniment-like dishes)... I could make a meal out of the kimchi! In retrospect, that wouldn't be a great idea. They also give you corn tea, which sounded odd to me, but really complements the food. I've also had the sushi here, but only a few of them. What I did have was very good, and surprisingly well presented for such an obscurely located place. As others have mentioned, it is kind of hidden in a strip mall; it's in the area where Mongolian BBQ is, but inside the actual office building. Visited last week for the first time. I've had many people recommend this spot so I was looking forward to giving it a try. If I had to rate the experience overall, I would say it was a good one!! Food was good, atmosphere was nice, can't comment on pricing because I was treated to dinner this outing, and service was decent. We arrived around 6pm and the restaurant was nearly empty. Maybe one or two other guests there. We had a party of 6 and when we first came in, the hostess asked if we had a reservation, which we didn't. There appeared to be a bit of confusion among the hosts, so much so that I took my phone out and check the opening hours because I thought maybe we were coming in near closing time. Regardless, we were taken to our seats and given menus. Our server was very soft spoken and with the hood vents on above the grill table, it was difficult to hear her which made things a bit more difficult. My family ordered various meats and veggies to grill while I had the traditional Bi Bim Bab with beef and a sushi roll. We also started off with a few appetizers, all of which were pretty tasty. My family had fun grilling the food and trying new things with the different sides and sauces, etc. My dish was good but I felt like it could've been more flavorful. In hindsight, I also think I should've chosen a different meat or no meat at all. I just wasn't a fan of the ground beef. The sushi roll was ok. I tried a bit of the different grilled dishes and I actually preferred those to my meal. Now I know for next time! Overall, the experience was good and it's something I can check off my list. My wife and I love Korean and this is our favorite Korean place in the Detroit area. It's quite authentic and quite tasty. I usually order the signature item (Bi Bim Bab) and it is delicious. During our visit last week, we had the Angus Beef short ribs and cod fish hot pot -- both excellent, though the beef dish was a little pricey thanks to the Angus label. Most meals come with the traditional Korean cold side dishes, which are comprised of miniature dishes of Kimchi, bean sprouts, pickled vegetables, potato salad and so forth. There's sure to be something you'll like. They have pretty good sushi too, so don't be afraid to order it. After you eat, they'll bring you some fresh fruit -- usually orange or watermelon -- to cleanse the palate. Nice touch. On top of everything else, the service is always fast and friendly. It doesn't matter how little time we have in the Detroit area, we always have to come here! I LOVE THIS PLACE! This is the best Korean/sushi restaurant I've been to in a long time. I guess I do like the fact that it is slightly "Americanized". After visiting some very authentic Korean restaurants, I feel like this is a nice middle ground. Everytime we get sashimi it is as fresh as can be. (I've only experienced this at one other place, Maru!) The owner stopped by our table the last time we were there and gave us some small nori sheets to eat the uni with. MIND BLOWN!! I thought the best way to eat uni was all by itself, but boy was I wrong. This is a must try if you've never had it this way before. Moving on to entrees, I'll just say we haven't tried anything that we haven't like yet. We do tend to sitck to the bbq and soups though. We haven't ever asked about dessert so I'm not even sure what they have to offer. We always end up ordering so much because it's just that good. Surprisingly they have amazing service. All waitresses are willing to wexplain, help and go above and beyond with anything. Usually ou go to a somewhat authentic Asian restaurant and you feel ignored and rushed: definitely not the case here! One area where I feel they could do better is their sake and beer list. I love this place. It is not my first Korean bbq experience but it is the one that I have been too the most over the past 10 years or so. For me, they are consistent, welcoming, and most importantly, the food is great. I don't cook the food at the table as much as I used to but that has not dampened my enjoyment of this place at all. Their take out is just as good as eat in as well although you do not get as much appetizers nor do you get the atmosphere that comes with eating here. If there is a negative, it is that sometimes they claim to not have an apple to mix with my soju. I enjoy eating here and will continue to do so. read more

Went here with a monthly "Lunch Around the World" work bunch (6 others) to try a new cuisine. We think this place rated a solid 4 stars. Here's why... I called a day ahead since we had a good sized group. The manager (Kay?) was super friendly on the phone and welcomed our reservation. The waitress was less friendly but plenty attentive. No one had the intestinal fortitude to try the barbecue but I had the chicken bibimbap. It was yummy. The egg on top looked perfect for mixing into the mound of rice and veggies and the stone bowl was very cool. Although truth be told, the barbecue sauce really made the dish complete. No watered down stuff...it was good and spicy. Oh yeah, I liked it all! The free cut strawberries with chocolate sauce was a hit with the gang and a tasty ending to a delicious lunch. The waitress gave us separate bills without a problem and was efficient in processing the card payments. I'll be back to try the barbecue next time when I have more time to sit and enjoy it. I didn't even know this was in the area as it's located in a pretty nondescript structure. The service is hit or miss but it's an Asian restaurant, so excellent customer service isn't to be expected. We had the seafood pancakes and they were definitely not worth the price. The bbq was great - the meat was delicious and fresh. The fumes weren't awful due to the good exhausts overheard. The banchan was pretty good too and you get the refills only when you ask. Definitely coming back to try the actual bimbimbap.
