I drove by this place a million times and finally stopped in. The food is delicious. Shakes even better. Finally, a fast food restaurant that offers a Gardenburger! I visited Big A's for the first time yesterday and I thought it was pretty good. There are plenty of options beyond the typical burger joint. I ordered a veggie burger with cheddar cheese with a side of curly fries and it all tasted good. My friend tried the root beer float and she enjoyed it as well. A decent place with reasonable prices. I also loved the old school 60's car hop service. The decor inside was nothing special. Cleanliness could also use an improvement, as evidenced by the used bandage stuck on the dining bench. Gross! read more

Their kids menu is nice with the highlight being smiley fries! The root beer floats in frost mugs are delicious, and they give FREE refills on the root beer! They have indoor seating if you don't want to have food delivered to your car. Also, they have converted a few of the drive in parking spaces to covered picnic tables! Wow the avacado burger was amazing. The service was very friendly and I got the order to go. The beef pattie was really juicy and tasted great. Couple co-workers went here almost every day of the week we were working in Grass Valley. It's not on the cheap end either, the meal ran close to $15 with their house made root beer. This was thee best accidental find ever. The hubs and I were on our way home from Reno and we're going to stop at jimboys. We passed it up by accident and I am so glad we did because we ended up at Big A. I got a root beer float and a mushroom burger, my husband got the island burger and a plain root beer, we shared a small order of pesto garlic fries. Total came out to 31.90, seemed a bit steep at first but when you taste the food the price seems just right to me. Everything was hands down amazing, all we were saying in between bites was how good it was. I will start with 4 stars as this was my first time here. I ordered the fish and chips, along with a large root beer. The fish was very good, the fries were average. The coleslaw side order wasn't so good for my taste in slaw. The root beer was FANTASTIC, I had no idea that it was homemade until my friend told me so. Next time I will try the Chicago dog and a root beer float. The service was good, and the staff was good ! I was not certain about this place, as usually places that have been around, go downhill! However I love good Rootbeer and it made it worth the trip. I had the 1/2lb Cheeseburger, with Fries! The burger was nice, juicy and had great flavor. The French fries where nice and hot, salted well and a good size portion. I will highly recommend this place, the service was prompt, courteous, don't forget the Rootbeer! My next trip is, go back for a Rootbeer Float! read more

Basic drive in food. I got the Island burger, a small garlic fry and a soda. For a few items the total was nearly $17. Definitely overpriced. The burger was okay, the patty itself was small, wimpy and fell apart, getting lost in the oversized bun. The fries were pretty good. Precut for sure but hot and crispy. Throwing some garlic on top didn't make them worth $5. Food wise, I was disappointed despite having low expectations going in. The ambience was cool, like a 50's drive in vibe. The people were friendly there too. Won't likely return mostly based on the price. The value just wasn't there. read more

Great burgers! My boyfriend thinks they're the best in town. I got one with bacon and bbq sauce and he got the Polynesian. We also got one root beer, one root beer float (with free root beer refills!) and an order of curly fries. We loved everything. It's an old timey drive-in. Nothing fancy but plenty of charm. Big A's is a great place for a burger don't judge by its appearance! The staff is friendly and efficient and the food is always served fresh. There are a lot of burger options in the Grass Valley/ Nevada City area, but few offer grass fed or organic beef. Big A's has there traditional beef, but they also offer Niman Ranch Organic Beef or for a little more Kobe Beef. It is always satisfying and consistent. The sweet potato fries are awesome too! This place was pretty good there menu was huge and I didn't really know what to choose. I asked for a couple recommendations and then continued to decide what I wanted. We ended up ordering a couple different items and for the most part everyone liked what they ordered. I ordered a double cheeseburger with with bacon. The only thing I can say about the burger was it was a little dry and I wasn't sure where the cheese wentas it was melted away. I don't recommend the garlic fries they weren't the best but the curly fries were pretty good. Now for the root beer I recommend getting a small since there is refills. It is nice that they give you a chilled glass but after the first class the root beer isn't very cold. I recommend asking for water with your root beer as the root beer is pretty sweet. If you're looking for a good route beer float and a decent meal this is the spot for you. It's not gonna be cheap but it's good. read more

My absolute favorite place for breakfast! The scramble plate with sausage (or Bacon) is fabulous and the biscuits & sausage gravy are to die for. Every breakfast that I have ever had has been wonderful. I am SOOO glad they started doing breakfast a number of months ago! The menu is HUGE and it may take awhile to decide. The burgers are ALWAYS voted the BEST anywhere. And OMG, the onion rings! Try the Philly Cheesestake sandwich. I keep going back, and back, and back for another one. It is my favorite dinner choice. The new owner is SOOO customer oriented and friendly that the place feels like home when you are there. We got stuck in Reno for two days due to weather conditions and in order to make it home we had to take a route diversion that took us through Grass Valley. We stopped here for lunch. The place is clean, the staff friendly and efficient. The prices very reasonable and the menu pretty extensive for a burger joint. The hamburgers were really good, as were the hot dogs. The fries are crispy. The housemade rootbeer is delicious. Excellent lunch spot for a quick but well made meal while travelling through grass valley. Seems to be popular with the locals as well. Curly fries were good, but over priced and pretty much the exact same as Arby's, excepts for literally 2 curly fries and the rest were all very small broken pieces. Went into the location on Saturday 02/13 for the first time while visiting family in Grass Valley. Got a burger to eat for lunch and was quite surprised to find three hairs in my food. The staff quickly apologized, and refunded my money....but then started arguing amongst each other about pulling their hair up and other issues....which caused a big backup and the service to suffer. Needless to say I won't recommend this place to friends, especially since their was no adults working in the joint, and a bunch of 'F' bombs coming from the kitchen and were heard in the dining area. read more
