I wasn't impressed at all. My friends and I didn't realize it was Father's Day when we left for brunch. Our original place had an hour wait for food, so we went here since we thought it would be faster. Diners are usually quick but greasy food and nothing special but we were hungry. 20 minute wait wasn't bad, but this is when it goes downhill. It took 20 more minutes to see the waitress and another 50 before we got our food. Two of us got benidicts and another got biscuits and gravy. At first we thought it's made by hand, but when we got our food it was apparent it's not. The gravy was slight cold and the hollandaise sauce was flavorless. The biscuit and gravy plate came with sautéd bratwurst and not sausage. We understand it was Father's Day, but that wasn't the problem. I don't know what's going on in their kitchen, but there's no reason it should take 50 minutes to get food. read more

My family spent a week or so on the peninsula visiting friends and family and hanging out at a lake. We occasionally ventured out for food, but mostly we played in the water. Still, Breakfast called. We love breakfast. On a prior visit my brother's BFF, who is a foodie, sent us to the Big Apple Diner for a meal. We enjoyed that. So I racked my brain and came up with "red apple diner" and we managed to drive around and find it using my poor memory.. well, I was close, come on. And, It used to be by the Red Apple Market, I think. It is a cute fifties style diner with small tables in a small space. It was super crowded for a summer Tuesday at 10:30 I thought, and we had a considerable wait. More than thirty minutes. There was a group of 15 ladies at a long row of tables, which was most of the tables on one side of the diner. I glared at them so they would leave. They didn't care and piddled around gabbing and being friendly rather than leaving when they were done eating. Even the servers were eyeing them in "come on leave now " encouragement. But hey, no problem, they have a gifty section by the register so your kids can whine and complain that they want stuff. My kid scored a stuffed kitty cat with a pen in it's tail. She paid for it herself though. Finally we were seated by a pleasant server, who took our order quickly and brought us coffee almost immediately. I like her! The three adults ate the usual breakfast stuff, my mom had scrambled eggs and toast, my husband had french toast stuffed with eggs and ham and cheese, I think, or maybe it was sausage.. he said he thinks he likes the meat and sweet separated bettter and wouldn't do it again but it was prepared nicely, so it was more about him than the cook. I had eggs with bacon and toast, it was fine. My kid had a grilled cheese sandwich and a rootbeer float with fries, she was in heaven... lots of ketchup action. All in all the meal was tasty, it was delivered with a smile, and it was clean and bright. I think we weren't expecting a gourmet experience, but it was kind of down home, and next time we're up there we will probably go again. It was a LITTLE bit on the high side for breakfast, but I think it's because we're not used to that nasty sales tax they have in states other than Oregon. ( what is THAT about!). read more

Very friendly service. The ambiance is fun with a 50s diner decor. It was a busy lunch time, but we seated quickly and taken care of promptly. We had the lunch special - pot roast melt. This was a large delicious sandwich served with fries. My husband also had a chocolate malt which was thick and creamy. We're only in town for a few days, but we'll be back. Loved it! Took my 12 year old son there last weekend, on recommendation of a co-worker and friend (Thanks M!). My son LOVES diners, and he was all over it. He had the chicken tender basket, and both the chicken and fries were great, and he thought the salad was large enough he only ate a bit to save room for the main course. I had the club sandwich, and it was love at first bite. Served on toasted sourdough, it was way too big for one meal, and the fries are darn tasty, especially if you add the seasoning they have at each table. As a testament to to the sandwich, it made 2 small meals, one later that night and one lunch the next day, and it was just as tasty, with not a hint of sogginess. We will definitely be back. Yes, I'm a fan, always have been and always will be! Big Apple Diner (otherwise referred to as Red Apple Diner for many of us) is a true staple in our area. Here at Big Apple you get consistency, tried and true, good old fashioned, consistency. The service is always friendly, fast and good no matter what server you get. Many of the servers have been there for many years and yet they still have that smile on their face and in their greeting. Service has always been prompt from the time you sit down until you receive your check. They don't over serve, they just seem to know when the right time is to stop and check on you. Coffee is kept full, plates are cleared when empty, water refilled when 1/2 full... all the marks of great customer service. This visit had me enjoying a bacon cheeseburger and my lunch partner an omelet. I ordered extra bacon because who doesn't want extra bacon and wow, I definitely got extra bacon! Wonderful thick cut crispy yet meaty bacon on a juicy burger with plenty of tomato and lettuce. Not enough sauce for me but some extra mayonnaise had me needing extra napkins! The omelet was perfection on a plate, light and fluffy with plenty of stuffing for every bight to be exactly what was ordered. The hashbrowns were nice and crispy, just like ordered but they definitely need some salt. I didn't have a milk shake this time but that was an oversight on my part. Always, always, always get a milk shake, they are the best in town! Between myself, family and friends, I swear we've had everything on the menu and I'm happy to say, everything has been consistently good. It's hot, it's what we ordered and it's delivered with a smile. Can't really ask for more than that! Oh, and they have SPAM!! In case you're wondering why four instead of five stars, it just has to do with the cleanliness. Came here with a girlfriend, who told me they had really good, home cooked diner food. I was really excited to try this place, as I had heard good things about it before from others, also. When you walk in the door, you walk through a little gift shop area that sells cute knick knacks. We were immediately seated and drink orders were taken. After perusing the menu, my friend decided on the hash and eggs, while I opted for the biscuits and gravy with a side of hashbrowns. The waiter suggested I order a half order of biscuits and gravy because with the hashbrowns it would be a large portion...I'm so glad I did! The good: Cute decor (old style diner), friendly service, fresh squeezed orange juice, hash looked amazing and friend confirmed the deliciousness of her meal! The portions of both meals were huge :) The bad: My biscuits and gravy sucked! I was really excited to try it, and being a southern girl I really love some biscuits and gravy, but these were the worst. The biscuits were really dense and tasteless. The gravy was flavorless with a runny consistency. Really disappointed and really wishing I had ordered the hash! The okay: Hashbrowns were meh, crunchy on top, mushy on the bottom, with no distinguishing taste. Prices, moderate considering the portions. A traditional looking diner attached to the Red Apple Grocery Store. The wait on Sunday afternoon was fairly short. I think it would be awesome if they had little juke boxes at each booth, but they don't. We ordered a light breakfast. I ordered a single potato pancake with a side of sour cream and it was really good. I also tried their spam, cinnamon toast and I was pleasantly surprised. I feel that they could cut the number of offerings by about 10% and and possibly compartmentalize their offerings to specific times of day and improve quality and wait times. This place reminds me so much of home, back in Louisiana we have a little mom and pop diner that I have been going to for years for the lower priced food and ambiance. Like the diner back home, the Big Apple Diner has one of the best menus and atmospheres. I also must say, I've tried plenty of clam chowders up in Washington and the Big Apple's clam chowder is the most delicious. I had no room for dessert yet I just had to try the chocolate cake, IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT! I left feeling very full and content after one of the cooks from the back came and asked how the food and experience was, further telling us about specials and the military appreciation day every single Sunday! Expect wait on weekend brunch time, make sure don't come here if you're in a hurry. Their German potato pancake is TO DIE FOR! This is one of my favorite local places to go eat breakfast at. They have lots of choices from a traditional breakfast selection to spam and eggs. They have week night specials so depending on what they are, I go there certain nights for dinner too. I've eaten here so many times and never had a bad experience. The menu has a little bit of everything. A lot of people go there for the yummy shakes and malts. I also love that they play music from the 50s and 60s. Overall great experience.
