First time ordering from this restaurant. I wanted to try it because of the amazing reviews I read online. I was very disappointed. I ordered the Douglas and I don't know what I got but it's not what I expected. The gravy was running, the chicken was almost burnt, the biscuit was hard and the bacon jam and toast were not included in my order. I picked up my order and the place appears to have a nice atmosphere. Soft colors and nice music was playing. Since I picked up my order, my interaction with the wait staff was limited but someone did greet me as I walked in. This is the reason for the 2 stars instead of one. An out of the way breakfast/brunch spot off 96th St. Gave it a try on a Sunday morning and it was MUCH less crowded than other breakfast spots, so that was a plus. We were seated quickly but waited a bit before a server came to our table; it looked like he had the patio and the back half of the dining area. The decor is sparse, but the patio is really cute! Come hungry! The portions are HUGE. I couldn't decide what to get so tried The Douglas (potatoes, eggs, bacon jam, chicken on a biscuit) and my husband got the eggs Benedict biscuit. They also have some fun coffee/latte/cocktail options, but we didn't try them on this visit. The biscuits are so good! Flaky and delicious! The rest of the food is okay but still very flavorful. We will definitely be back at some point to try other things. Excellent and very friendly service, and quick on a call-ahead order of biscuits and gravy. As a sort of connoisseur of B&G, I give Big Bear a 7 on a scale of 1-10. On the other hand, at a price of $5.00, this is a real bargain! I give the taste test nod to Bearded Bagel which is also located on 96th St. One of the issues with the takeout order was that the biscuit is so dense that it needs a knife for cutting, not just the flimsy plastic fork that was included. I resorted to a pierce and cut apart method so that I wouldn't break the fork and then be forced to use my fingers, which I totally would have done of course. read more

Biscuits are kind of a weak point for me, so I should have really tried this place much sooner. With that aim one weekend, we got here bit late on a sunday to avoid long waits. There seem to be no wait and restaurant had quite a few empty tables but no hostess as well. Few staff walked around ignoring us...finally someone came by to seat us. While a server was quick to come by to check on drinks, she didnt come back for a long long time to take our order. We ordered the Biscuit benedict, Son of a biscuit, Hibernator with gravy on side and kids pancakes. The food fortunately came out pretty quick. The Hibernator was good and the gravy on the side was the right choice for me. Gravy was rich and tasty as one would expect but too heavy with the fried chicken for me. Biscuit bendict were okay. My husband did like the son of a biscuit, but mentioned the chicken was not as hot and crispy as a nashville hot chicken generally is. To sum it up, food was okay, wait experience to be seated or ordering or bill paying was a little odd for a brunch/lunch place. Big Bear is a newish brunch alternative that we've visited a few times, since my partner is a huge biscuit fan. Its menu offers unique items & twists you don't see often around Indianapolis and vaguely reminds me of Asheville's Biscuit Head (minus the butter & jam bar and more southern influences). This location is fairly large inside, brightly decorated, and newly renovated with colorful breakfast-themed murals. They also have a nice outdoor area for warmer weather days. My partner has enjoyed the more traditional biscuit sandwiches, like the sausage gravy smothered Douglas and fried chicken-based Hibernator. He gives the huge flaky, buttery biscuits two (2) big thumbs up. I'm trying to be carb-lite (or biscuit avoidant) and found it easy to adjust menu items to meet my needs. I have ordered a biscuit-less Stump Jumper, a delicious piece of fried bologna covered with creamy mornay sauce balanced with sweet jalapeño jam & pickle-y chow chow, with a side of brussels & apple slaw. My partner also liked the cinnamon-sugar coated Fox Biscuits with apple butter dipping sauce, for a sweet treat. My favorite order is the veg-heavy Griffin's Grits with two (2) over-easy eggs added. It's a lovely mix of roasted tomatoes, zucchini and peppers, with bits of funky salty goat cheese, pimento cheese, and a very flavorful, lightly spicy mushroom cream sauce. I try to eat around the grits (carbs!); however, it's hard to resist them, after they soak up all the runny yolk, sauce, and roasted veg flavor. The Griffin's Grits is a really great non-biscuit order alternative that I hope stays on the menu. Big Bear has always been pretty busy when we visit, even on weekdays. The staff are very friendly, but do so seem a bit stretched out in covering such a big space and the kitchen can sometimes have difficulty keeping up with the crowds. This is understandable given the labor shortage and the popularity of Big Bear, so please offer your servers and the staff some grace/patience (and tip well)...maybe time your 1st visit to a less busy time of week. read more

It's complicated. Food -- 5 stars. Service -- 2 stars. Ambiance -- 3 stars. We arrived around 1:15pm on a Sunday afternoon. It was busy, but we were told it would be a 20-25 minute wait. We weren't in a hurry, so we decided to wait. It turns out that many people had put their name on the wait list and then left to wait in their cars, so the number of people waiting was a little deceptive. After about 20 minutes, the man serving as host just disappeared. No one was manning the host station. Not sure if he was on a break, had ended his shift or had just left. After about 10 minutes, a server stepped up and started calling through the wait list. It was clear they were, as are so many places, short-staffed. After about 45 minutes, we were seated. We ordered drinks and when those came out 5 minutes or so after, placed our food order. After that, our server disappeared. After 15 or 20 minutes, we flagged down another server to ask for refills. Another lengthy wait later, we still did not have food, were in need of refills again, and still had not seen our original server. By the time we had been at the restaurant for almost an hour and a half, we still didn't have food and the place nearing empty. Our server reappeared. When I asked about our order, she was clearly surprised that we hadn't gotten our food. However, if she or someone else had checked on us, they would have known. It was quite busy, so we were being patient and we're enjoying our conversation. When our server returned from the kitchen, she said there was a computer glitch and our order had been lost. So she took it again and said our meals would be discounted. We asked if they could bring us a biscuit to have while we waited. Sure. No problem. Five minutes later, the server came back and said what my husband ordered was out of stock. At this point, we were just laughing. He placed a different order. Finally, our food arrived and our meals were comped. My husband had the Hibernator and said it was delicious. I had the Brussels salad, add bacon. The portion was smaller than I expected, but turned out to be plenty. Also delicious. About 5 minutes after our order was delivered, the server brought two biscuits (the ones that were supposed to tide us over) with housemad strawberry jam. It sounds ridiculous to say, but they were worth the wait. They did end up coming our meal, which we did not ask for. We were there so long that I had plenty of time to check out the decor. They need to pick a vibe. I suggest they go with the on-brand painted bear artwork and ditch the Gatlinburg country elements. Overall, the service was slow, distracted, and uninterested. I thought I was going to love this place. It was just okay. I still think others will love it. The service was slow on a non busy day. Our drinks came out after our food. My Hibernator was a little cold but the biscuits and fried chicken were good. They definitely stand out for their biscuits. Fluffy, homemade, perfect. My husband loved the plain biscuits and gravy. Their fruit cup was fresh and juicy fruit. I know that sounds silly to mention but some places give you crap for a fruit cup so it's worth mentioning. I'm so happy I finally was able to come to Big Bear biscuits for brunch. I've heard nothing but good things about this new restaurant, and they were all true. My former colleague and I came here for brunch one Sunday, and we were very impressed with the food. The service was Ok, but our server did have an attitude. We could tell something was bothering her because she did not smile and had a serious concerned look on her face the entire time. Maybe she was having a bad day, or did not want to be at work that particular day, but it is still no excuse to provide excellent customer service. She was kind and did her best to provide us good service, but we could tell she did not want to be at work that day. Other than that, the dining experience was fantastic! I ordered the garden veggie bowl and a lavender Chai Latte. Both were amazing and delicious. The lavender Chai Latte was the best chai latte I have had in quite a while. The potatoes were very different and unique, but tasted exceptional. My former colleague ordered the build your own biscuit and she loved it very much! The ambiance is very unique and creative with paintings of bears all around the restaurant. It is decorative and makes the space more inviting to the customer. I placed an order for pickup, and when I arrived it took a few minutes of waiting before I got my order. They seemed busy and possibly understaffed to keep up, so I was fine with waiting. I didn't realize how messy my food would be. I was a little underwhelmed with my food compared to all of the amazing reviews I have seen. I am not sure if my chicken wasn't crispy enough, or if it had too much gravy or sat too long. It was good, but just not anything mind blowing. One of my top 10 breakfast spots in the world is Denver Biscuit Company in...Denver. So I was super excited to hear a similar style restaurant was opening in Indy! First time I tried to go they had an hour long wait so I opted for something quicker. Came here on a Friday for lunch, no wait, with my parents. Service was a tad slow but no big deal. I just got a water but they have a full coffee menu which looked good! They have like...20 different biscuit options. Some you can pick up, some are smothered in gravy therefore kinda hard to pick up. I went with the Douglas($14): biscuit, fried chicken, potatoes, fried egg, cheese then smothered in sausage gravy. I got a side of fruit to go with it. It was phenomenal. Amazing. Just as good as Denver Biscuit Co. I'd recommend somehow getting half of your biscuit on the side or not covered in gravy, so that you can try one of their house made jams on that half! Lots of carbs, great flavors, and unique food combinations make for fun and unique dishes. I really enjoyed the time here and the food. Our server, Stephanie L, was fantastic and attentive. She had great knowledge of the menu and was kind and patient with us and our questions. The place is industrial and has lots of open space with minimal decor. It's got a colder and more austere feel to it, but not in a bad way. I always think of warm and comfy breakfast places, and this isn't your normal breakfast spot. The food is really good, so it's worth your time and a drive if it's needed. I would give it a 4.5-star rating, but that isn't an option. I didn't see anything safe for my wife with Celiac disease. This is my first time here and I was looking forward to checking out Big Bear Biscuit. I had an errand that brought me directly by the restaurant so I couldn't pass it up. Big Bear Biscuit was easy to find on East 96th Street with a large parking lot. As I entered I was warmly greeted and seated immediately. The bar-top is first-come seating to the right as you enter. Half booths with banquette seating run along two walls with many, many 4-top tables in the center. They have an area in the back currently being opened up which was a large room for private events and groups at ProdigyBurger. Big Bear and Prodigy Burger has the same owner and they decided Big Bear needed more seating so they busted out a wall. They've only been open since July 13, 2022, not even a month, and already the owner recognized the need for additional seating with current weekend waits of one to two hours and he's addressing immediately. Unfortunately, it was raining so I couldn't take advantage of the large, cute, and colorful, patio. The patio is being expanded as well. The interior decor is minimalistic with light white, orange and navy walls. The floors are concrete and light rock and roll was playing at a enjoyable volume but between the crowd and no sound buffer the music was hard to enjoy, but still appreciated. I'm sure the volume is fine with a smaller crowd. Emma L. arrived quickly to our table and was so pleasant, informative and friendly. She definitely provided 5 star service. The menu options are breakfast or lunch biscuits, salads, omlettes and skillets, breakfast plates and biscuit plates with several sides (good-looking fried potatoes). A Little Cubs menu options are a flat $5 with cereal, pancakes, biscuits and gravy or a little Bear breakfast and I did see a high chair earlier. The Beartender prepared my Irish Coffee which had a nice balance of flavors between the Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey and Baileys Irish Cream topped off with fluffy whipped cream. Their cocktails range from Mimosa, Bloody Mary, Tequila Sunrise, Bellini and a tropical Bearkiller with fruit juices and Rum. They serve many Coffee Drinks, several Lattes, Coke products and sweet or unsweetened Ice Tea (thinking of you Richard). I was indecisive since 3 options immediately had my attention. The Cajun Omelete or Chicken and Dumplings sounded delicious but I decided to try the Shrimp and Grits. The Shrimp and Grits has sauteed Creole Shrimp, chopped Applewood bacon, zucchini, green onions and lightly spiced mushroom cream over pimento cheese Grits. It was a pretty presentation with the orange grits, the Shrimp was medium size and tender with a light touch of Creole flavor and the Applewood Smoked Bacon added a pleasant Smokey touch. I was very curious about the Bonnie Blue dessert described as a biscuit topped with blueberry cobbler and vanilla bean ice cream. I was surprised when it arrived since it was 5 dough balls deep-fried and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar with a large serving of good quality blueberry jam on the side topped with excellent vanilla bean ice cream. The dough balls were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and prepared perfectly. It was tasty but again, surprised and expected more of a traditional blueberry cobbler. I wouldn't order again, only because I'm not a big fan of deep-fried dough balls. I know!! I'm weird!! But had hoped for a traditional blueberry cobbler served on a large biscuit. I enjoyed my first experience at Big Bear Biscuit and look forward to returning for the Cajun Skillet or Chicken and Dumplings. Come during the week, if possible, to avoid the longer weekend wait times. Hopefully those will be reduced once the expansion is complete. Lastly, Big Bear has a Honey Pot Charity where each month the busy Bears and Bee's will select a charity that means a lot to them and provide support with the customers' donations. 3 ways to donate are purchase the biscuits and gravy and 10% of the proceeds will support the American Bear Association. Next, drop cash or coins in the Honey Pot by the register or round up when paying with a card. Extremely nice their giving back to the Community. Our staff decided to go out for brunch, but our spot was shutdown. So we decided to check our Big Bear Biscuits. It was the best choice! The location is easy to miss right off 96th street but the patio is very colorful. The seating is more farmer sheik family style. When I went I had just got my braces tightened and couldn't chew too much tough stuff. I chose the biscuit with blueberry compote and vanilla ice cream. This was amazing! A mix of hot and cold. You guys. This biscuit sandwich is legit. The black pepper aioli was giving me life! Also, that biscuit? Yeah it's amazing. The home fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned, no wimpy potatoes here! My friend ordered the three bears which came with three biscuits and you could choose your gravy. She got the sausage, chicken etoufee and spicy tomato coconut. The sausage gravy was amazing, but the chicken etoufee might have stolen the show! The tomato one was definitely good too, just not our fav. We had to try the PB And J pie too because who doesn't want breakfast for dessert? It was smooth and creamy and reminiscent of peanut butter fudge. Nothing but awesome here - my wife had the three bears to get a sampling, and I had the Cajun Skillet as well as a Bjorn latte. Serving sizes are large and came out delivered by the chef in just a few minutes. Latte was delicious while being plenty strong. Cajun had loads of flavor but wasn't explicitly spicy, while the three bears was a great balance of savory with a little sweet. Hoping they have wifi soon so I can knock out some work with these amazing lattes! read more

It's a shame that it has become an anomaly to get your order right. Was hoping for it to be different here. I ordered biscuits w/ sausage gravy, however, what I received can only be explained as a hostile fungi takeover with no sausage in sight. This shouldn't be difficult to differentiate mushrooms from sausage. Simply marking the container with a "S" for sausage or "M" for mushroom would help prevent a potential hospital visit due to an allergy. P.S. I thought I should include the fact that my 5 year old daughter was able to tell the difference within 2 seconds and identified this was not sausage gravy. read more

Finally made it to Big Bear Biscuits! I have been so excited to try big bear and it lived up to my expectations! We tried the Shine and the Douglas. The Douglas had chicken, potatoes, an egg, and gravy on it. It was so good, such good flavors. The shine was more of a classic, it came with egg, cheese, your choice of meat, and a yummy black pepper aioli. I got the maple cured pork belly and it was thick but I didn't think it was very flavorful. The biscuits are delicious! They are soft, moist, and buttery, but still a little flaky and crispy on the outside. A perfect biscuit in my opinion. I also got a side of the fig jam because I've heard it's amazing and it was. The biscuits are huge and the meals are a great value. I really appreciate the variety of their "side" options. They have a lot more than just fruit and home fries. I love their huge outdoor patio as well! We didn't get to sit out there this time but it looks super nice. They have tons of seating indoors as well. We arrived at 10 AM on a Saturday and we're sat quickly. Service was good for how busy they are! So excited for this new niche breakfast and lunch spot! read more

First time here and we will definitely be back. Reason for 4 stars: the sausage gravy was a little over flavored for me - but was still quite good. Just a bit salty. Also - silly - but the yellow table was sat at was SO BRIGHT I had to wear my sunglasses All the tables were bright and cheery - the yellow just had quite the reflection coming from it! I went there at 1:00pm on Sunday and there was a one hour wait for a table! Big Bear just opened four days ago so maybe this is what it will be like for a while. I ordered Queen of the Rodeo (country fried short rib, biscuit, pickled red onions, smothered in sawmill gravy) and Fox Biscuits (fried mini biscuits, dusted with cinnamon sugar and a cup of chocolate gravy. The food was outstanding...especially the Queen of the Rodeo! I sopped up every drop of the gravy with my biscuit and home fries. The staff did a great job with the huge crowd. They looked pretty exhausted, but they were nice and worked hard. read more
