I had a pretty damn good experience at Big Bear Biscuits last week. For context, I have an infant son. We've only taken him out to restaurant a handful of times, and Big Bear was his first time out for breakfast. He wakes up at 6am rain or shine, naturally we arrived at Big Bear early (they open at 7am on Saturday!). As soon as we walked in it hit me - kids at every. Single. Table. "Ok, I guess this is who we are now!" popped into my head. Our server was friendly, attentive, kind. We couldn't get a high chair right away (so many kids!) but she kept an eye out and snagged one as soon as it became available. Big Bear was absolutely hopping at Sunday brunch-time. The place was packed, with quite a few people waiting for a table. We joined them and waited around twenty minutes to be seated. The menu is great! The space is great! The food and coffees, all great! Service was kind, but incredibly slow. It took thirty minutes for my coffee to arrive and well over an hour for our meals to show up. And nobody ever came to the table to apologize for a delay or refill our drinks. The place seemed well staffed, nobody was running around like they were in the weeds, but food came out at a snail's pace. All that said, the food was so good, that we'll be back. Fantastic. The Petting Zoo is a contender for my fave brunch, ever. The flavors are truly superb - to me, it's the absolute perfect mixture of salty and sweet. My favorite combo. The jalapeño jam is much more sweet than I would've imagined - almost tastes like honey! It's lovely. The roasted tomatoes add the perfect amount of acid. The biscuit itself can stand alone - done perfectly. I could go on and on, but again, suffice it to say that this is a meal I could eat endlessly, and I'd still be happy as a clam. Opted for the Douglas (crispy fried chicken topped with a perfect fried egg-runny yolk, sawmill sausage gravy, bacon jam and home fries (browned and seasoned superbly)) and the Petting Zoo (tomatoes avocado, goat cheese, jalapeno jam, poached eggs on an open faced biscuit) which paired nicely with a Bellini. And yes, you will be taking a box home, maybe even an extra biscuit for the road. The portions are substantial and filling. Atmosphere was a normal crowded Indy hotspot, the audience's self importance is the cause for concern not the establishment. The location was a portion of the old Scottys brewhouse, redecorated with bears and breakfast designs. Not distracting from the menu/food experience at all, which is where you'll be looking the whole meal... it's that yum! My husband and I are not comfortable eating indoors yet but we really wanted to try Big Bear so we went on a Monday morning at 9am and sat outdoors. First of all, everyone we encountered was very friendly, from when we entered, while we were eating and on the way out. Our server checked on us periodically and we had a couple employees ask us if we liked the food. Chef Dean was there and it was nice to say hello. We loved his food when he was at Meridian and we loved the food at Big Bear, too. My dark roast coffee was perfectly dark and smooth just the way I like it! There's been a lot of chatter about this new breakfast spot and I love breakfast, so it was time to check it out! My husband found this sweet little restaurant tucked off of 96th street, next to other stores. The parking is right in front and has a beautiful patio with screened garage door to continue air flow but alleviate any bugs inside! I love that! We arrived and the spot wasn't too busy, right before the lunch crowd. We waited patiently to order and it probably took about 20 minutes to do so. The owner saw us waiting and brought out water, and checked on us. We ordered our drinks and meals and waited again. My husband received his coffee 10 min later but mine didn't come out. Another 10 minutes, and out came our food! A different server asked if we needed anything, and I asked to check on my latte and cocktail. We were starving so, we dug right in and as promised, these are the BEST biscuits we've tasted in a LONG time. Fluffy little clouds of carbs covered in hollandaise, poached eggs and tomatoes! My husband and I both agreed we will return because the food is *chefs kiss*, but sadly, service could be improved, which is why only the 4 stars. So it's a big bisquit "sandwich", but overall we were not impressed. The pimento cheese grits side were good, but this bisquit with chicken and egg, called the Douglas, lacked flavor- bland. We added hot sauce and that helped a little. The menu said it had "bacon jam and smothered in gravy." Not sure where the gravy was as you can't see it let alone taste it. Interior decor is a weird mix of many things and not very attractive. Loud club type music with weird videos on the screen was thumping the entire time - not a relaxing breakfast in the least. Our server was nice and funny but that didn't make up for the overall less than hoped for experience. Bill with two sandwiches, coffees and tip was $47. We will not be back unfortunately. read more

I wanted to like this place SO much. The reviews were outstanding and the menu was hilarious and had so many cool combinations. The lattes are delicious and they have nondairy milks to choose from. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't great. We've had better is all I can really say about it. The service was awful. Our waitress never checked on us once the whole time. She took our orders, brought our food and check and that was it. My husband had to get up and ask for another coffee refill and another waitress brought it. And they were not busy. Just standing at the counter talking. If you are just getting coffee, go, otherwise it would be a pass for me. One more thing - they are plastic bear bottles on the table. You usually see honey in these. I drenched half of my biscuit in it thinking it was honey. Nope - maple syrup?!!!!! They don't even have pancakes. My family visited Big Bear Biscuits for the first time recently. Disclaimer that it was very early into their opening, so I gave them some lee-way, but we did have some issues to start. Tried this place on opening week! Biscuits were great- they were huge! The bacon egg and cheese sandwich was great. Also tried one of the specialty iced lattes; it was good but not enough ice! My only negative was how slow the service was. It took 30 minutes for our waitress to take our order, another 20 to get waters, they forgot our coffees, another 40 minutes for our food. We had 7 people in our party. Originally it took about a half hour to come and take our order, then we waited over an hour to get out food. We tried to flag over one of the servers to just ask her if she could tell our waitress to come over to our table. Waiving to her, but she just kept walking on. We eventually had to go up to the counter and ask where our food was, and this was. The whole thing was very bizarre. One person in our group kept saying, "let's just leave." One of us said that he was fine waiting, and another one said, "We have seven orders in, and that's a lot of waste, and cost of food to the establishment." So we just continued to wait, till our food finally arrived. One person in our group never even got his food! (We just waited and waited. Our waitress never bothered to come and check on us after most of the food was finally brought to our table. We wanted to ask, "where is his food," but we couldn't, It was like we were invisible!) Two people in our group had their orders wrong. The server never came back to see if we needed anything. One guy decided to cancel his reorder, because he waited long enough already. We would have understood if the restaurant was full, and understaffed, but that wasn't the case. (A manager comped some people in our party and gave discounts to others. More on that in a minute.) When our waitress finally walked by our table, she was asked why she hasn't been back to check on us, or give us a refill in our drinks. She just turned and walked away. We thought she was going to get our refills on soda and water. She just walked away, never saying a word, and never returning. (There never any apologies. No "I'm sorry for your orders coming out wrong," "I'm sorry for not coming back to check on you," No excuses offered, no "I'm new," or "the cook is new,"... or anything. No one was coming to give us our check, so when we walked up to ask for our check, a man whom we had not seen previously, asked us if we had any problems. We told him what was going on, and he's the one that took care of us, giving us all discounts. (Which we didn't ask for.) But our waitress who could hear us, never looked at us, just shook her head, with her back to us, as we were wondering out loud, "why did we get such horrible service?" (I looked around to see If anyone in our party had a Trump shirt on or something. Like why would we get such bad service? By the way no one was wearing a Trump or a Biden shirt, or any other type of attire that might be considered offensive by some.) Never so much as an apology from anyone including our waitress. It was nice to get a discount. But those of us who ate our meal, would have paid for our meal. I don't know about the other people in our party, but I still left the $10 tip even though my bill was comp'd completely. (Not everyone's bill was comp'd completely.) Don't think I'll ever go back to this place. This was a horrible experience. Two of the people in our party who received their food had no complaints in the food, they each said the food was okay. My order was the steak and eggs, and it was very good. I asked for my yolks and egg whites to be wisked together and then fried over hard. That's not what I received, My waitress seemed upset when I said "this is not what I ordered." She assumed that I just wanted my eggs scrambled. I guess that she just misunderstood. I told her that I was going to eat it because we waited a long time for breakfast. (I wasn't going to send it back, and wait longer.) Our waitress just seem to be offended at us for no reason at all. (Maybe she was just having a bad day?) It's totally understandable if there are problems, people make mistakes. I hate leaving a bad review, but too many bad things happened there. When we arrived there was a crowd around the host stand but we were quickly able to get on the list and told it'd be an hour wait. This was fine for us, because we had nearby errands to run. Overall, I'd recommend the restaurant, as I found the menu had a lot of great options. I really enjoyed my sandwich, but was disappointed that it did not have the hot honey on it that the menu said it would. Not only was the hot honey not on the sandwich, but the waitress didn't mention they no longer serve it when I ordered. I understand she may have forgotten, but I think they should add something to the menu to state this. Despite the missing honey, the chicken was well seasoned, with just the right amount of spice, and it had a great crunch. The biscuit was good, but too large. So that it wouldn't over power the other flavors, I only kept half of the biscuit on. My husband didn't enjoy his sandwich as much as me. The cheese wasn't completely melted and his chicken wasn't as flavorful. The side of potatoes also had no flavor. The other negative would be the cleanliness of the space. They need to do a better job cleaning tables, chairs and the floor between patrons. I had to wipe my seat off when we arrived at our table and there were crumbs and trash on the table and the floor near us. This place is great! It's a small place but busy! We had good service and the food was unique and tasty. The biscuit is huge and so fluffy. My husband and I both really enjoyed our food. All of the pancakes and waffles had rosemary in it, which made for a unique flavor but my kids didn't like and wouldn't eat it. I had the Douglas and it was huge but it was missing something for me. You had to eat it in sections like just biscuit and potatoes or just biscuit. It just too big to get all the flavors together. That might have been why it was missing something for me. Finally got to try Big Bear Biscuits this morning. Brunch is my favorite meal so I had been looking forward to trying this place every since it opened. I had the Towanda which had a fried green tomato and pimento cheese. I love southern cuisine , so this was right up my alley. My friend got the Douglas . It was so big she could only eat half and took the rest home to her husband. I was most impressed by the prices. In regards to brunch, the prices were very reasonable for the portion size you get. I got a cup of coffee and my meal (which included a side) for only $12.99. After hearing so much positive buzz about this place, I finally visited for lunch on a weekday. I've heard how busy it gets on weekends, so I knew a weekday was a better bet. They were still busy, but no wait for a table for 2. Our server was helpful as the menu is so appealing, we needed help deciding. The juices on the mimosa flight were so fresh, I loved the beet/orange juice because it was so different. Now, the important stuff, biscuits. These are HUGE. Definitely not a place for a light meal. The biscuits are buttery, flaky, and impossible to stop eating. We loved both of our sammies. I went with the classic: bacon, egg, and cheese. It also has a pepper aoli which is absolutely the perfect condiment for this meal. My only wish was that the broccoli salad was dressed in a vinegrette versus the mayo based dressing it had. I understand being understaffed but when a full glass of water was spilled on the floor right next to me (it's amazing I did not get wet) no one ever bothered to wipe it up. After 10 minutes from it being spilled, the owner simply planted a "wet floor sign" next to my seat. From the time we arrived to the time we finally received our food it took 48 minutes. My food was excellent. My husband said his food was good but he could have made it at home (not likely). My daughter wasn't that impressed so I didn't photograph her food. My biggest issue is the sad apologies given by the wait staff & the owner. Don't apologize if you feel it's not warranted. I ordered the Douglas. This thing was huge! But very good. I'd probably order it without the bacon jam next time though. There was an odd sweet flavor that just wasn't my "jam". Yummy! My husband and I came in on a late Saturday morning and we loved every part of our stay and food! We order 2 speciality coffees, the rise, and the hibernator. The biscuits are fluffy and the eggs were cooked perfectly. I got a side of mushroom gravy and it was very good! My husband said the chicken that came with the hibernator was very flavoring and had a nice crisp. As for the speciality drinks, we got the camp fire(?) and panda. Both were very strong and not overly sweet. The staff were very friendly! We didn't have to wait too long, given it was a Saturday late Saturday around 10ish.
