Smelled like an old school bake shop at first. Bought a cream cheese brownie to share and asked for a "shot" of icing, because I thought the icing was made in-house. Icing was pulled from their mixer. Brownie was dry and tasteless. Cream cheese wasn't really creamy, but a dried-up, stale version. Icing tasted waxy and had a tinge of "store-bought-iness." While trying out the brownie, I saw the BBBC employee who gave me the icing shot pull out a bucket of "chocolate icing" from the shelf below the work counter. The icing that was pulled from the mixer actually was icing bought from a bakery warehouse (white tub, yellow label). I stopped eating the icing. After the BBBC employee pulled out the pail of icing, he pulled out cakes to be shaped into layer cakes. In plain view of the customers--as there is no separate room to prepare the cakes and handle money for payments--the BBBC employee remained gloveless as he shaped the cakes, full palm on the cake while rotating the cake and using the other hand to hold the knife to shape. He then saw a colleague of his and walked over to her and gave her a hug, all without washing his hands. I go here a lot for the empanadas- have tried them all and they were all fresh and tasty. Have sampled some of the sweets and they were good too. Had a really good Dulce de leche napoleon. Took a star off- was considering two- because service can be painfully slow sometimes. They do that thing where one person waits on customers and another might be washing dishes or something and no matter how many people come in, the person wiping down the counter or washing a dish won't set that aside to help assist customers and speed things along. read more

This place was a god send. I was super hungry and on my way to a conference so I searched for gluten free options within walking distance and they came up. I ordered a cookie and one of their rolls stuffed with cheese. I was pleasantly surprised when i took a bite into the roll and it was warm and flavorful. I wish I had ordered two. I believe it also had bacon bits which gave it the extra wow factor. For the two items, it was about $8.50-9 which is pricey but I'm willing to pay based on the quality of food. Such a cute tongue in cheek place! Inside, it's a Latinx-inspired bakery with delicious baked goods and coffees. I had the signature "booty bun", which had a little less filling than I expected, but honestly the bread was baked so well it was still delicious. What is the world coming to? Mister Darcy is reviewing a Big Booty? Yes, but after overcoming prejudices and swallowing some pride! It is true. I was guilty of judging a book by its cover. In my defense, how could a dessert connoisseur take a bakery named "Big Booty" seriously? As you all know, I hold my calories to a very high standard, and so while I did show up at the door of the bakery earlier in the year, one look at the logo and the oversized booty, was enough to convince me to turn around and walk away. The first I became aware of the popularity of Big Booty, was around the time a tireless attempt was made by a close yelp friend to determine the best Red Velvet cupcake in the city. She had declared Big Booty as the winner, which piqued my curiosity. But as Red Velvet was not MY battle, and the gentleman in me was never going to step up to steal the spotlight, I desisted from raising my hand and saying: "Excuse me, but I disagree." However, enough water has passed under the bridge, and I have tried their Red Velvet Cupcake many a times, to now comment on it. I completely agree that their version is ONE of the better ones in the city: small size, moist and tender cake, and real cream cheese frosting (even though somewhat greasy at times, and I prefer it to be sweeter). My bigger issue, though, is that the top of the cupcake is often hard, leading to a crunchier texture. I have also tried their other cupcakes: carrot (excellent cake with white cream cheese frosting) and Dulce de leche (yellow butter cream frosting and marginal caramel filling inside). It's good that they don't have too much variety, for that would just confuse the heck out of guys trying to impress their girlfriends. On three separate occasions, I have heard a guy say, "I'll take the one with the white frosting. What is it called?" (!!!) The shop's signature product was intended to be the Booty Buns, essentially a sweet bread roll with stuffing inside. The bun's outer crust is covered with sugar crystals that give it an interesting crunchy texture, but the fillings (nutella, guava, strawberry) were inadequate for my liking. I've also tried their cookies and the Triple Chocolate one that I was fortunate to have straight from the oven, was quite good. I am sure there were three different chocolates in the chips, but I could clearly taste only two. While their Cappuccino has disappointed me, I must mention that the service is attentive, friendly, and indulgent in explaining things to you. Truly, top notch! At their advice, I have tried and thoroughly enjoyed the Flan, and the Tres Leches Cake. True to their Latin American roots, both of these are executed perfectly, with the Tres Leches almost a pudding cake, and much lighter than their other cakes (German Chocolate and Coconut). The Flan to me is a solid 5 stars, one that I recommend wholeheartedly, much more so than the popular rice pudding (apparently supervised by the owner's Mom). In fact, I am getting addicted to some cold flan for breakfast on Sunday mornings :) I was amused by the attention to detail that has gone into making the product marketable for the Chelsea neighborhood. The, er, well proportioned Big Booty logo is part of it, as is the layout of the shop that provides ample seating at the rear (!!) The owner, one hears used to be a banker at Wall Street, till he realized Big Booty as his Calling and changed careers. He has indeed worked his booty off in making it stand apart from the nearby generic competition, boringly named: Burgers and Cupcakes. My way of saying thanks for their hard work and effort. So I buy em lunch or bring em cheese cake from Reading Market or like today, I load up on Big Booty. Here is the 411 There's nothing welcoming or cheery about the folks that wait on you at Big Booty. In any other type of business I could understand this but... A-Yo! We talking about ma-fuckin cupcakes so there is no excuse.. High priced cupcakes in fact. At the very least, there are 2 things to rave about here. And oh the rave...I can't even move beyond them, and I have been back 3 times in the 3 weeks...I can't walk by this place without going in for: (1) EMPANANDAS - to die for. True Argentine style. I lived in Argentina, these are the real deal. No matter that the owners are Chilean, clearly they know the value of a really fabulous Argentine-style empanada. They are "de horno" which means they are baked rather than fried - which in my opinion is a thousand times better. The chicken is unreal, the carne picada - amazing too. And don't miss the homemade hot sauce. Oh lordy...I am salivating as I write this. (2) CCCs (duh - chocolate chip cookies) - quite possibly even more earth-shattering than the empanandas?? I don't want to sound cocky, but I do believe I am something of a C.C.Cookie connoisseur. I bake them at home. I have a secret recipe. I've tried nearly every "amazing CCC" in NYC. So I had to go here, because one of my friends bought me one of their t-shirts with the image of the guy with the large behind. So I have two experiences. One pretty great, and one pretty annoying. The pretty good one: I called this joint a day before I had to have a cake for one of my bro's bday gatherings. Anyway, as it turns out, it is hard to order a cake in Manhattan for the day before, even if it is just a cake they have in house and squiggle a bday message on it. I was not being picky about the style of cake at all. But Big Booty came to the rescue as they were able to have a cake ready the next day with a bday greeting. So, many thanks for that. The pretty annoying experience: I went in with my buddy Rick and we were looking to take a break and sit down for a second with a baked item and beverage. When we got there in the middle of the afternoon, we ordered our delicious baked goods. But then we went to order our iced chai lattes and they refused to make them. They claimed that they were "out of chai" even though they opened the fridge and we saw a couple containers in there! Then, we went to sit down, and he told us he had to run an errand and we weren't allowed to sit because they were closing (uh hello! its the middle of the afternoon!). So we left---without our chai and without our mid afternoon break. We wound up just standing outside the door for a few minutes as we caught up and ate our baked goods (mine a really awesome cinammon roll, granted). HELLO BIG BOOTY! this place rules -- i was on my way to the dentist when i came across this bakery and lucky for me, i stopped in and brought home bags filled with deliciousness. the owner is really great and really helpful with awesome recommendations -- on my first visit i got a "fusion chocolate chip cookie" which has dark, milk and semi-sweet chunks of chocolate inside and the dulce de leche napoleon (or heaven in a pastry) as i like to call it. over the next 4 days i indulged in these sweet treats and they were well worth it -- as i savored each bite and attempted to figure out how these baked good were so delicious. on my next visit to the dentist, i of course made a special stop at Big Booty and this time picked up a dulce de leche cupcake -- "yummy" is all i have to say. unfortunately, i don't go to the dentist that often but will be making it out to Chelsea more frequently so i can get some delicious baked goods from Big Booty -- and i'm happy to report, all of my induling has not created a "Big Booty" :) read more

Walked by here many times. I saw a sign that caught my attention. They had vegan empanadas. I decided to try one. The attendant was courteous. The empanadas are kept warm and come with a sauce. The vegan one is filled with veggies. It was just ok. The dough was thick and gooey. The filling was just ok as well. I haven't tried their pastries so I can't comment on those. A great little bakery in a decent location. I love the storefront, which is decorated with desserts. The name of this place is quite interesting. I got the coconut brownie and giant meringues. Both were delicious. There is an amazing, large assortment of desserts to choose from. The location is near other restaurants, places to eat, and hotels. If you're ever in the area, I definitely would recommend checking this place out and buying a dessert to go. My husband and I were walking around the neighborhood and were struck with a sweets craving. Minutes later, we passed right by this place and walked in. We shared a double chocolate brownie, which was incredibly delicious - not too bitter, not too sweet. The seating area in the back is cute and comfortable. My only downside was the staff - they were helpful, but not very friendly. They just seemed rushed and not really interested in helping us. Also, they had a big mixer that was going (mixing icing for cupcakes), so we had to repeat ourselves numerous times. After a few days, I couldn't get them out of my head, so I decided to go check them out on a lunch break. I ordered the red velvet cupcake to see for myself what all the hype was about, and got an iced coffee too (it was sweltering out). I sipped the coffee on the way back to my office and it hit the spot. I ate my lunch and patiently saved the cupcake for a mid-afternoon treat. As soon as I bit into it, though, I understood all the hype. The cupcake itself was moist, delicious...but the real winner is the frosting. I've never tasted cream cheese frosting like this! Sweet, excellent cream cheese flavor, and not too stiff or dried out. At $2.50, it's a little small for the price, but the flavor makes it well worth the buy. Was attracted here by the wafting smells of the baked goods and the S'mores Cookie staring at me through the window. It was love at first sight. As I walked in, a stack of Fudge Brownie Bars vied for my affections. Despite the predicament I faced, in my heart, I knew that S'mores Cookie was the one. I had high hopes.. The cupcakes look fantastic. I decided to try the chocolate banana bread and a homemade hot chocolate. The bread seemed a little stale and I did not like the hot cocoa.. Gluten free yummies!!! I'm so pleased that I came in and asked if they had anything gf. They had a nice little assortment of treats, and not just cookies! It's really sad to have a gluten allergy and not be able to enjoy interesting bread things once in awhile. I tried their yucca flour cheesy bun thing and it was amazing! as someone who lives in constant fear of having a big booty, not too sure about the naming of this place. But WOW the cupcakes sure take away my healthy skepticism! This is the best place in the city for unique cupcakes. Don't go in here and get boring vanilla, chocolate or red velvet (the white zinfandel of cupcakes). Instead, opt for the more exotic dulce de leche or pumpkin goods. The Dulche de leche is out of this world! inconsistent quality - just not worth it. Grabbed a peanut butter cup cookie on saturday afternoon and was super amazed at how good it was. So much so that I decided to buy over $130 worth of goodies for a co-workers birthday celebration. I bought an assortment of cookies, cupcakes, and brownies and took them to the office that same afternoon. Wow.. so disappointed. Everything was dried out, I assume from sitting in the bakery way to long. Cookies were hard as a rock, brownies were so dry they crumbled apart and the cupcakes were devoid of any moisture. I had what is apparently the best red velvet cupcake in New York. I don't know that I'd call it the BEST, but it was pretty darn good...except more of a 3.75 rating. I could have actually had it a little bigger (I like big cupcakes, and hello, with a name like Big Booty Bread I'd expect something BIG), but I like that they are made with beets instead of red food coloring. However, because the cupcake was small, it made the frosting-to-cake ratio quite fantastic. The rest of the baked goods looked good, but I can't remember what they were anymore. If there's one thing that makes me giggle, it's the title "Booty Buns." If there's one thing that makes me salivate, it's huge slabs of bread pudding, arroz con leche, and giant, oblong chocolate chip cookies that look like no other choco chippies around. Despite all of the drooling, I was able to quell my nerves and settle on a corn arepa the size of a 45 disc. It was thin, crispy/chewy on the outside and oh-so-velvety the closer I got to the center; in essence, it was a disk of cornbread, and some of the best cornbread I've ever had. I can't wait to go back to try their other arepas, and they seem to do a pretty mean guava jelly sandwich.
