I was feeling like a snack and was reminiscing about the cupcafe store along 23rd (which has since closed) till I chanced upon Big Booty. The name was an eye-catcher and since they had a display window, I was drawn to the cinnamon rolls ... and their "People on Yelp LOVE us" decal. I'm a HUGE fan of cinnamon rolls. They were such a home-made basic item (like what choc chip cookie is like in the US) that I used to bake my own batch in Sweden and just chomp on it all day. Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of cinnabon only because of the crazy amount of icing / frosting they drip on their rolls. Oftentimes, I'd almost always get it only when a fresh batch was prepared just so I can have them spare the icing. So back to Big Booty... I was definitely drawn to their cinnamon rolls as they aren't dripped with icing like Cinnabon's so in I walked. Upon closer inspection, the outer layers of the rolls seemed a little dry... However at $2.50, it was reasonably priced (especially so when the rolls are huge!) and worth the risk. I was craving something sweet anyway so I got one to go. Verdict: Just aight. Nothing spectacular. I doubt I'll stop by to get a roll if I ever walk by this place. Reading some of the reviews here, seems like the cupcakes are a huge hit. I'm personally a big fan of Crumbs.... and I see reviews here claiming the cupcakes here are much better than Crumbs'.... well, perhaps it's worth a second try here. read more

This review is only for the red velvet cupcakes, which I've been wanting to try for ages now! I stopped in to try these much-touted gems, and I have to say I was a little disappointed. It ended up being quite warm today, so Big Booty was toasty, and I think the cupcakes suffered as a result. The cake was so light and flimsy that it practically fell apart in my hands. The frosting was drippy. As for taste, well, I will eat practically anything in cupcake form But... the cake just didn't really taste like anything. I thought I was imagining it, but I had a bite of just the cake, and I couldn't even get a sense of what it tasted like. (This also could have been due to the extreme tartness of the cream cheese frosting.) I appreciate the fact that they use beets for coloring (as mentioned by several reviewers below) instead of artificial coloring, but the cake was just... nothing. I stopped by here after work to seek out the coveted 'Best Red Velvet Cake' and I was not disappointed. I haven't tried all the red velvets at all the famous bakeries in NYC, but I have tried a fair number, and these are probably the best I've had so far. The cake is deliciously tender and very moist with a good amount of cocoa flavor while the frosting (cream cheese!) was thankfully full of cream cheese flavor. They pretty much roundhouse kicked Sugar Sweet Sunshine's cupcakes into the middle of next week. I do wish that the frosting were a little bit sweeter/stiffer (it was very soft and cream cheesy) but it was a very, very tasty cupcake. I believe this is my new go-to place for red velvet cupcakes :) Everything else looks delicious too so I will definitely be back to try the other baked goods. read more

Went here today for the first time ever & I LOVED IT! I got me & Adrian some breakfast/brunch; I order us ham & cheese hot sandwich on wheat bread with large coffees! First plus for me was that the bread was made in house & was the best wheat bread I've ever eaten! Second the gentleman working there was great, attentive and very helpful. He handles all the customers alone & was quick, efficient & very communicative which I like. Ordered a beef empanada and it was great. It had olives and egg inside. Very much like the way my Nana makes them. This will be my go to spot for a quick bite for lunch when I'm craving empanadas. Cute decorations and a very authentic feeling NYC bakery. This was the first place we went in after the train. We got a coconut brownie (yummy) and a merengue. The merengue was underwhelming and tasted fairly stale which is a pity as it looked really good. They had a lot of items to choose from so I would stop in again. Unfortunately for the well being of my booty, I work around the corner from Big Booty Bread Co. I've only actually been in once to pick up a treat while training for my half marathon. You know the type of treat...the "I will devour this after I do my long run of ten miles today, I'm going to totally deserve this." I was settled on two different cupcake flavors, red velvet and something else when I spied the tres leches cakes. "Oh, that, that's what I want, forget the cupcakes," I told the guy. He said the tres leches cake was delicious and I was making a very good choice. I ran my ten miles, ate a sensible dinner and then thoroughly enjoyed my tres leches cake treat. I came back because I read here on Yelp that they sell cupcakes, and my friend and I were doing a taste test of cupcakes from two other bakeries. It's normally hard for me to distinguish between various shops' Red Velvets (they're all pretty good)... but Big Booty's is unique and delicious :) I also got myself a chicken empanada, and I was amazed at how much chicken filling there was! Delicious cupcakes at a pretty reasonable price for this neighborhood. The best two were the red velvet, pumpkin spice and the confetti cupcakes. We also got the hostess, dulce de leche and chocolate/vanilla swirl. These were all good, but didnt really stand out. Staff was really friendly, and they also had a ton of other baked items. Only reason it didn't get 5 stars was because when I had Bavarian cream turnover, there was a little blue/green spot in the cream, and it concerned me that it might have spoiled. AMAZING! That is all I can really say...but, I will say more :) I decided to try Big Booty for the first time by having them provide the treats for my 30th birthday party. I was a bit nervous since it was an event but they knocked it out of the park! The staff was extremely helpful and the trays looked great! ( I wish I had a picture but there was no chance ) The mix of cookies and brownies and cupcakes was perfect for a crowd and all were pretty wonderful. Very pricey! I brought the chicken, and beef empanada. I was dissapointed as the guy warmed it in the microwave which made my empanada a big dough. The New York cake and cupcake competition is fierce and in my opinion, Big Booty takes the cake prize One cake I ordered was a luscious German Chocolate cake. It's a tradition in our house to have this on birthdays, but who has the time to bake it themselves? So suffice to say, we've sampled a lot of different bakers version of this one. It was the best we've ever had. An entire made fresh to order Giant German Chocolate was only $30, which for New York prices is a huge bargain. They also sell single slices of all their cakes and many cupcake versions. Other sublime offerings include coconut cake and Red Velvet, and Dulce de Leche cupcakes to die for. The service and prices are also incredible. If you are like us and are tired of dry cupcakes with grease icing from those other places...try Big Booty...our cake was light, flavorful and moist with heavenly icing. read more

Disclaimer: the guy who helped me creeped me out a bit (no...a lot). As a general rule, I recommend anyone behind a counter at a bakery not leer at their customers with an oddly distorted grin, it doesn't make you want to buy anything else. I hesitantly went with just one item: the Dulce de Leche cupcake was contrived, but tasted good enough and was still soft. Judging from other reviews, maybe I should check the schedule for who's workin' and return for some bread(s), but I don't foresee that happening anytime soon. These are not only the best I have ever had in New York City (believe me there are A LOT of great bakeries) but the best I have ever had in my LIFE! The red velvet are so amazingly good. The cream cheese frosting is to die for and then plus the moistness of the actually cake. It is hard to find both parts of the cupcake takes like heaven. I LOVE me some Big Booty Bread Co. I allow myself one sweet treat a week and the cupcakes here are absolutely DIVINE!! I used to live near Big Booty and met Jose Rojas, the owner years ago. So many of the small businesses that I loved when I lived in Chelsea back in 2007 no longer exist. It's sad that gentrification is making unique neighborhoods in NYC more like the bland corporate landscapes that have gutted small businesses all over the country. THANK GOD FOR BIG BOOTY!!!! According to Jose, business is booming and I couldn't be happier. The service is fantastic and the baked goods are some of the best that NYC has to offer.
