Omigosh! What a great find by my son and NYC tour guide. We shared the carrot cake, which was incredibly delicious. There is an allergy free bakery in NYC and it's completely delicious and totally undetectable that it's not made with dairy, eggs or wheat. Four people ate the baked goods we bought. One had a dairy allergy and one had a wheat allergy. Everyone loved all of the food. The food is well made and made with quality ingredients to make such great items without the typical recipes. Thus, it's pricey. But, if you have serious allergies and typically can't have mainstream baked goods then it's worth it. The staff were totally friendly and encouraging about what to buy. It's a cute little shop with limited seating but it's constantly flowing. Great bakery for vegan/GF/nut free options. The whole bakery is currently plant based and gluten free. I asked a staff member what the most popular items were and she noted the cinnamon bun and a scone. I decided to go for the seasonal option of an espresso budino muffin, which is in collaboration with Devocion coffee. The muffin was a little pricey at $7 each, but delicious. A crispy top and moist muffin with coffee inside, was unique and not overly sweet. Very good overall. I'll try the cinnamon bun next time. They also have savory sandwiches and sell coffee. I am still dreaming of that delicious mushroom, mustard danish delight! My friend, who is vegan, put Bub's on our must-try list for a recent trip to the city - and I am so glad we did! We both got vanilla lattes which were great, and then split a bunch of little treats...my favorite being a mushroom danish. Their iconic cinnamon rolls are also a must! I'm not vegan nor do I have food allergies, but I do have a 4 year old with multiple food allergies. I was thrilled to hear about a top 9 gluten free bakery! And at such a lucky time too; I was planning to go to NYC not too long after they opened. We went on a Saturday afternoon. There was a line but it didn't quite reach the door and it went fast, though the length was pretty set. They didn't have too much on display at the time - only 4 baked goods - and they mentioned cups. A little disappointing on the offerings on a weekend but maybe we just came at a bad time. Not a kouign amann in sight! I got a cinnamon roll, cookie, and scone for my kid. He didn't like the taste of the icing on the roll so that was promptly rejected, but he stuff his face with the cookie! In fact, he finished it all, which was a surprise. Despite his food allergies, he often doesn't like the foods he can have mostly due to textures or perhaps some sort of aftertaste. I was absolutely thrilled he could have everything they sold AND he liked something enough to finish it! In fact, I was so excited for him I went inside and got him two more cookies to bring back home. I sadly didn't get a chance to try the items I purchased for him, but my husband did eat a little bit of the cookie and he says you can't tell it's allergen-friendly. They're thin with gooey chocolate and are soft/chewy. I did try a cup though. They seem like deconstructed treats. They were out of berry cheesecake but they had pumpkin cheesecake cups and my sister got one. You can definitely taste the coconut, but they were quite good! And I don't even like coconut. A few notes: my kid is allergic to wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, avocado, pineapple, and kiwi. As a family, we avoid alliums and are vegetarians. They offer an egg biscuit sandwich but they use Just Egg, which contains alliums. I'm not sure if they had this when we went since biscuits weren't on display, but something to know for those with sensitivities to alliums. Because this place avoids the top 9 common food allergens, they are vegan by default. They're also serve drinks/coffee. The place itself is on the smaller side with a few benches lining the walls. There are no tables, sadly, and no public restrooms. It seemed pretty clean overall and the staff were fairly nice and friendly. I'm just glad there is a place my kid can feel semi-"normal". I often say that being normal is overrated, but in the case of food allergies, they are completely out of one's control and I really feel for my kid and people who have food allergies and cannot eat freely. Bub's Bakery provides that safe spot for people who have food allergies to sort of feel... included. They list out all the ingredients on the name cards so they are transparent about it. The prices are on the high side but if you go grocery shopping for a special diet/food allergy-friendly foods, you know it's all at least double the cost of the regular counterpart. With these being so expertly done, it's worth it. I'd love to see them expand their menu in due time! In the meantime, this is an excellent choice for those with or without food allergies. read more

Went early in the morning so there was no line, but I usually see one on weekends. Was greeted by staff and looked around at the baked goods. They also have drinks. So impressed by this allergen friendly bakery! Everything looked so incredibly delicious, service was fast, and I appreciated how every treat had a card with exactly what was inside each. The savory danish had great tasty flavor in the mushrooms, but I found the dough itself to be too dense and not flakey. It tasted like the pastry had been in the fridge for a day or so. ((4.25 stars)) Bub's Bakery is wedged between Lafayette and Mulberry in NoHo. modern-ish interior is bright, neatly maintained, and has a warm welcoming tone with seating down the center and entrances on both Lafayette and Mulberry Streets. beyond the seating, the space is skinny and not much room to hang out in outside of the seating. the bakery is focused on making baked goods that avoid the use of the top nine allergens: soy, eggs, dairy, nuts, peanuts, wheat, sesame, fish, and shellfish. the bakery clearly addresses a need New Yorkers who have food allergies, are just trying to be a bit more health conscious, or curious about how good can baked goods be without the eggs, dairy, wheat, etc. count me in the last category as i have no food allergies that i know of, but i was interested in tasting a mostly allergen-free eats could be. what do i think of Bub's allergen-free baked items? your mileage may vary based on your expectations. i think if you have to avoid certain foods or ingredients then Bub's will serve you well...however will you think these allergen-free eats are indistinguishable taste-wise from baked eats that use eggs, wheat, dairy, etc., i think not...you will see/taste differences pretty immediately. tried three items at Bub's. 1) i tried the Vanilla Cream Cupcake: it's a very small cupcake. the frosting really stands out--good flavor, smooth, and fairly creamy. the cake part while light doesn't replicate a true cupcake--the cake/crumb is not very airy, but more soft mushy...not gummy but not cake-like. while the cupcake is not dry...it's not moist either and the cake crumb isn't very fluffy but those are the limitations of not using butter, milk, etc. while I didn't dislike the cupcake; i didn't really like it either. also the vanilla never really came through in the cake and only somewhat in the frosting. Bub's cupcake did come with a can of vanilla seltzer as a promotion. Cupcake grade: C+. 2) the chocolate chunk cookie is very much a cookie. somewhat medium-sized. though it leans more on the crispy attributes of a traditional chocolate chunk cookie than the soft cookie-ness that most identify with a cookie. the chocolate chunkiness is packed into the cookie which is more crunchy and caramelized outside but doesn't have soft chewy center/insides. and there is nice trace of salt to offset the sweetness of the cookie and chocolate. this is a safe choice if you're not sure what to get and i'd probably order it again. Cookie grade: B. 3) the Maple Glazed Blueberry Scone. American-style scone packed with blueberries. this is a scone that i can get behind. it's big enough to share. the exterior has the maple glaze which helps it be crunchy plays against the soft dense interior. the scone's insides are a pleasant moist cakey crumb with soft blueberries swirled throughout to add that deep rich berry flavors that play off the scone's cakes-ness. it's moist rich inside is very good. i would say while i didn't dislike the maple-glaze crunch and found it enjoyable...maybe a different more subtle sweet flavor would be better match bc maple is such a strong flavor against the main blueberry scone taste. Scone grade: A-. so as long as you adjust your expectations to what allergen-free baked good can be then you'll be pleasantly surprised what can be done. however, are they one for one with traditional ones that use dairy, wheat, etc.? no, but they don't have to be--welcome to one of life's pleasures and pitfalls: variety. outside of the eats, the coffee program here is solid as i had a cortado made with an oat milk and it was good. the Americano's that I had here were solidly good. i think they use Devocion's medium roast which is good, so quality of coffee here will be good even if there is no dairy creamers and such to mix in. the service, i found to be friendly enough, not very chatty. the bakery does seems to be fairly busy with tourists and the allergen-challenged, but waits aren't that long. this place will be very busy once warmer weather hits. prices are on the higher side for a bakery, but i assume making things allergen-free ups the price quite a bit. while my friends who have food challenges will find this place to be a place for them, i don't think i would substitute traditional cookies and cupcakes with the ones here bc of personal preference...however in terms of that scone, i just might. might... read more

I needed to know what all the rave was about this bakery! Yes it is great for people who have food allergies. Mostly Gluten and nuts but some others as well. I finally walked by and said let me go in and see what the craze is all about. I looked at all the options. They all list what ingredients are in it which is a big plus. There were some ingredients I was not sure about as someone who has many food allergies but gluten intolerance is not one of them. And when I asked one of the workers they didn't know they had to look it up. I guess I could have just googled it myself.
