I went to buy sandwiches on Sunday, June 29th, 2025 at 1:29 PM. I ordered 2 chicken sandwich, as regularly I do, but what I received was not a chicken sandwich at all. Instead, I was given something unrecognizable, completely lacking any chicken, and seemingly thrown together with just peppers and other random ingredients. (Photo attached.) Every time I visit this wonderful Boulangerie on Spring Street, I am transported back to Paris. When in Paris, you step into a beautiful bakery and the aroma of fresh coffee and croissants welcomes you and every sense awakens. Balthazar gives me that same feel: handwritten menu on the mirror, fresh flowers, and bundled treats of baked goods to take away. I've visited to treat my employees to their delicious plain and chocolate croissants and the real star, the apple galette. I also have bought cakes to celebrate each team member's birthday. The most recent celebration involved a strawberry glazed cheesecake. I preordered a day in advance, a must! When I arrived to pick it up, the staff were glazing the strawberries on to the cake. ( highly recommend the strawberry glazed cheesecake!). Balthazar also offers savory treats as well as to go salads. There is a small crowd every morning but the staff is efficient and courteous so you do not feel as if you are waiting a long time. You can never go wrong with some pastries from Balthazar Boulangerie. They have such a great variety and everything is always SO fresh. I love their ham & cheese croissants, almond croissants and kougin amann. Hit me with all those buttery and flakey layersssss. The sandwiches are also fantastic and they're great to grab and go for a quick lunch. The only miss I've had here is with their quiche. I have been a fan of Balthazar Boulangerie for over 10 years. Their Ginger Citrus Tea is the only tea that I enjoy, and it has also inspired my passion for ginger. It is sweet, lemony, spicy, and soothing; it is really perfect on a cold day, though you can order it chilled as well. Their pastries are also excellent, including the Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie I sampled on my recent visit. The cookie was crunchy along the edges, but gooey in the middle. The large chunks of chocolate were bold and rich, while the walnuts added an earthiness. The bakery also makes excellent French lunch items (salads, sandwiches, etc.) and breads. I only wish I was in the Balthazar Boulangerie neighborhood more often so that I could indulge even more! read more

Just ok. I had high hopes because it looked like a legit boulangerie. I got the cinnamon roll, blueberry muffin, sugar donut and chocolate croissant. Been to Balthazar many times, both the restaurant and the Boulangerie and upon stopping by I decided I'd grab some donuts. To my surprise they had the apple cider ones that I really enjoy. Along with that I grabbed a chocolate one as well. Both were very good as usual. Went perfect with my warm apple cider which I already had with me. Some of the most buttery, flaky pastries in NY that I've had! I've tried the - Kougin Amann (5/5) - Almond Croissant (3/5) - Apple Galette (4/5) - Cream Cheese Danish (3/5) - Pecan Sticky Bun (5/5) - Everything Croissant (5/5) - Canele (4.5/5) I find that their layers are amazing- super buttery and savory. Unfortunately, many of their fillings are not so good. The cream cheese fillings were wayyy too sweet- same as the apple inside the galette (although the pie portion was DIVINE). The almond croissant didn't have enough paste. My favorites were the kougin amann and the everything croissant. The filling of the everything croissant had a little bit of a kick to it and balanced out the savory layers well while the kougin amann was sweet but not too sweet. In a nutshell: French pastries for those who are not concerned about carbohydrates, calories or things of that sort and instead wants an orgasm in their mouth... in SoHo. Although there is fierce competition among French restaurants and cafes when it comes to desserts, Balthazar flavors are distinctly Parisian and that's hard to find in NYC. BAD The lack of outside seating area is a missing area of opportunity as, people who might be interested in working can easily spend hours consuming. The business façade and windows need an upgrade, when you are waiting for an order and your eyes wander around you'll find some very old pastries displays and other little stuff that is off-putting. Yet again, this is not a place to hang out, unfortunately. BEST Croissants anyone??? Savory croissants are best fresh out of the oven, the texture.... just melts in your mouth. If I'm not sharing pics of the goods is because I ate them faster than my memory able to remember I've got to take a shot! I came here on a whim after I realized that the cafe's pastries, that I was at, were lacking. I remember passing by early in the morning and there was a man sitting outside with a coffee and a baguette and that imagery stayed with me, so I wanted to go for myself. Before this, I didn't even realize that Balthazar had a bakery/cafe area. There was a small line when I arrived, and the fact that it is such a tiny space for the bakery, made it feel a little cramped. But the employees were so nice and accommodating to everyone, the line went quickly. I ordered a plain croissant, a baguette with butter and strawberry jam, and a loaf of bread. The croissant was perfect--I probably looked ridiculous eating it as I was walking with a little bounce in my step, but it really made me happy. I ate the baguette for lunch, and in hindsight, I probably shouldn't have gotten it, or eaten it for breakfast, because it was a bit stale by the time I ate it. What I did not know that they had a little coffee and pastry shop next door to the restaurant. They have a relatively small case of bread and pastries but what is inside definitely punches above its weight. The case has cakes and pastries of the highest quality. I got a walnut brownie that was typical in size but was as dense as a rock and was delicious, without being overly rich. I also got an espresso and that was good as well. Ever since going to the Restaurant for my 30th birthday, I've had a reverence for all things Balthazar. I've passed by so many times on my way toward my monthly Cronut splurge, and always just wanted to pop in for their epic bread. Well...I recently took the plunge...on my way to pickup some Cronuts haha. It was around 6PM and the bakery was pretty empty, just me and the 2 salespeople. I asked what their most popular/famed type of bread was and also asked if they had anything with nuts...big on the crunch. Sour dough was apparently a big draw, and was also directed towards the walnut loaf for my crunchy-tooth. The staff that assisted my deliberations was super helpful, and even explained that I could do half-loaves, which I opted for with glee. Then...they just gave me the full loaves because it was near the end of the day (or I'm more charming than I give myself credit for). So far, I've only had a chance to sample the Walnut loaf (Passover interruption / sour dough's on ice) - and it is delightful. Great chew, ample nuttiness...and absolutely fantastic toasted! The bakery's interior is picturesque, reminding me of one of those old world French bakeries that often cover the pages of travel magazines. Loaves of bread were stacked near the door and lent the bakery a homey quality. Besides the beautiful interior, the breads which were presented in glass cases at the front were delicious to behold. I ordered a Canale, a small semisphere shaped sweet bread, and two sticky buns. Both These pastries were a treat: the sticky buns were the right amount of sweet and they paired well with the crunch of the nut coatings they had on top; the canales were delightfully petite, sweet breads. Every time I visit Balthazar Boulangerie I tell myself to try one of their visually pleasing baked goods but by the time I reach the cashier, it's the almond croissant that I order. The buttery flaky goodness topped with almonds brings me so much joy. The consistency of the almond croissants varies on each of my visits where one day the croissant tastes softer and other times it'll be a little drier but still good. I've seen Balthazar's products at countless coffee shops around the city but had never tried their almond croissant and decided it was time to remedy this. The word "overrated" comes to mind. On a weekend morning the tiny bakery area was crowded but service was friendly and efficient, and the line moved quickly. I got a plain croissant ($2.50) and an almond croissant ($2.75). Both had crispy, flaky, too crunchy exteriors, and the interiors were moist but too tough and not light at all. The plain croissant had an ok butter flavor and looked gorgeous, but it was far from being my favorite croissant of the day. The almond croissant was better. I loved the crunchy almond slivers and paste on top, and I appreciated that the almond paste was baked directly inside. However, this made huge hollow caverns inside the croissant. The croissant shell was very crunchy and seemed overbaked, and the ends were straight up hard and made a loud noise when I bit through them. The almond paste was delicious though, and overall it still tasted good but just wasn't as great as reputed to be. Previously I'd had their sticky bun, apple braid, and some type of scone at various coffee shops. I have a vague memory of them being good though not amazing, but I probably had them too late in the day to make a fair judgment. I definitely plan to return to see if their other baked goods live up to their reputation, but I'm in no hurry to do so at the moment - I'm not sure if they've become a tourist attraction where you're just paying for the name. read more
