I told myself I would stop in after staring at the pastries every time I go to work, and I'm glad I did. The costumer service is just grand. All three of the employees were ready and willing to serve me as I walked in the door. All of the pastries looked so tasty. I ended up getting the Rocky Road brownie for $3.25. The employee asked if I wanted a corner or middle piece of the brownie. That's SO NICE! I took a seat for a little bit to be accompanied by some great drag art. Once again, I took Mister Dessert's advice and tried the tres leches cake at Big Booty; once again, Mister Dessert did not lead me astray. The cake is light and moist, almost like a pudding cake. The guava pocket, served warm, is a real treat as the guava jelly gushes into your mouth when you bite into the bread shell. The guava booty bun and the dulce de leche bun could use a little more filling. Get the booty buns warmed up too. Service is very friendly and helpful. read more

I find it hard to believe that I wouldn't fall head over heels for a place with this name, but I think it was the early 1990s philosopher B.B. Devoe who posited, "Never trust a big butt and a smile." I've lived by that maxim my entire life; it has never steered me wrong...and that includes here on 23rd St. The service was excellent (smile included), but the empanadas leave a bit to be desired. They weren't bad, just a little heavy on the grease. I did appreciate the homemade hot sauce though, and since I was getting hangry they did the trick. The name alone makes you laugh! After seeing a movie across the street, I saw this place and just had to go in. The girls working didn't seem too happy but the one I talked to seemed to lighten up. Bought a butter croissant, a multi-grain croissant, a blueberry muffin, and a booty bun with nutella. The great thing is that they all tasted great the next day. Hot Saturday afternoon brought us here for a quick snack and drink. Interesting signage that gravitates you towards the window of baked goods. Wanted something refreshing to go with a sweet treat, so ordered the Watermelon Lemonade ($5) and the Chocolate Brownie ($3ish). Brownie is soft on the inside and a decent amount of chocolate. Lemonade is a large iced drink with real watermelon pulp inside. Refreshing and not too sweet, which went well with the brownie. Took a little time to make the drink, albeit worth the wait. A delightful bakery close to High Line Park in NYC and the Chelsea Market. It's a great place to pop in and grab a tea + a baked good before you walk the park and then eat the said baked good at high line park. What a sweet experience. My recommendations = the cheese balls. Oh man, that soft doughy yet crunchy every delicious bit of carbohydrate still makes my mouth water thinking about it. The banana bread is also a huge win. The most moist and sweet banana bread I've EVER eaten. Can't forget the tres leches cake. It is the things dreams are made of. We shared one piece between the 4 of us. Effing delightful. The baked goods make up for the not-so-sweet fact of having different pricing for large tea vs medium tea, despite the fact that the only value you get is more hot water and no extra tea bags. Love the chocolate chip banana bread.. But their customer service is the absolute worst. It's like they hate their jobs. The owner should retrain his employees on great customer service. It's ridiculous. I want to start my day with yummy banana bread. But I get an attitude where I'm invisible to a white customer... Or while waiting to place my order employees behind the counter, with NO other customers in the store having a conversation again ignoring me. Anything but giving a smile and service. It's sad. I truly don't want to do this, but sadly we had a subpar not great experience. I love that they have a range of pastry and baked goods, from Columbian to even savory empanadas. This bakery is a favorite for my partner and I. Anytime I pass this area I make an active effort to get red velvet cupcakes. Sometimes we get chocolate and vanilla too. They usually are excellent, customarily the frosting is whipped to a cream crease tartness and sweetened balance! However this time around our red velvet cupcakes were inedible. My partner with the sweet tooth didn't think they could even me salvaged. It seems like the frosting was an immense let down as something was missing, maybe even sugar? It was bigger tart or not at all sweetened enough to be a dessert. Truly strange!!! The balance was actually off and confusing because we've had outstanding experiences prior. Did someone nudge too much baking soda in instead? The cake portion was okay and moist but when the frosting is off for red velvet cupcakes (of which I ordered 3), that renders the cupcake practically pointless. Cute name, cute shop, friendly people/service. Very narrow entrance way. Definitely annoying trying to look at the treats, order, or come in/out with your stuff while others are also standing there, or doing the same as you. Also a small seating area in the back, a few wooden tables, and it's not meant for a big crowd or any type of long term lingering, but I can see it being cozy to have a cup of coffee or tea with a pasty and doing some web surfing. Friendly service, but quick moving/high turnover of treats because there was always someone needing help here -- and I stopped by twice in the same day! Around 12:30 PM they had only a few cupcakes available. But there were going to be more, since they were baking some at that time. So I left and came back by 3:30, there were plentiful cupcakes displayed in the front. Definitely appreciate the freshness. They have a mini chalkboard/small sign of what cupcakes they are serving that day within the display case, but there was not a particular order of how the cupcakes were arranged or listed, and I could not always distinguish which one was what, so I had to get someone to clarify. So in the end we opted for the vanilla/vanilla buttercream, vanilla with chocolate buttercream, and chocolate with cream filling/ganache glaze topping. WOW, if I was in the area, I would come back just to get these cupcakes again. It's exactly what I envisioned the perfect cupcake to be. Soft, slightly dense and crumbly with perfectly balanced buttercream --not too sweet, buttery or greasy. And especially with the vanilla cupcake, I could taste the vanilla, which is so refreshing! A problem with a lot of vanilla cupcakes is that they are extremely bland and to compensate for that, it's piled with overly sugary frosting. I love that with these cupcakes, I could actually taste the flavors! Took off a star because of the large fly I saw flitting around the cupcakes. Luckily it didn't appear to land on anything! I know this is common, but as other Yelpers have said, wish they had a closed display case instead of open air. With all the people in and out all the time, or people coughing/sneezing during the winter, the adorable baked goods would seem a lot more appealing if they had some protection from those elements. read more

I passed by right before closing. They didn't have regular coffee anymore, so I splurged for a americano. I guess their espresso machine hasn't been cleaned yet. Had an oreo cupcake. it was super fresh. It is really small and not cheap, but this is indeed New York City and its kind of expected. Their is an eating area which is good. Some of the other good cupcake establishments don't have anywhere to sit down, so it ends up being for take out, or eat in the street. The seating setup is more of a pizzeria / chinese place style. I ended up sick and stuck in the hotel one day during our NYC vacation. I was craving something sweet and my husband surprised me with a sweet treat. He told me he Googled "Bakery near me" and couldn't help but walk halfway across the city to find the search result with the can't-miss name: Big Booty. He came back with a coconut cupcake, s'mores cookie, and Reese's peanut butter cookie. I am a girl with a major sweet tooth and have tried cookies and desserts in several countries. I don't usually like coconut but the cupcake had just a small amount of it and was actually delicious! The Reese's cookie was excellent. And the s'mores cookie?? I've finally found a place where I can have a decent proper pan de yuca!!! SIIIIIIIIIIII!!!! QUE RICO!!!! Fresh out of the oven, still hot and moist, my favorite pan de yuca had the perfect chewiness just like the one I had in Ecuador!!! It's crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and it's super addictive! I can eat this every morning!!! I walk in and there is no one in the store. There is an older man paying for his coffee. He wants a bag inside another bag. God bless his bag caring old self. After the gentleman is done, the counterperson turns his back and walks away from me. And he's singing! I'd say for 3 minutes he has me standing and waiting. Finally, NKOTB comes over. I don't see the watermelon jug out, I ask if they still have any left and I'd like a small one. I have a crutch with a broken foot, I just want to sit, sip on my mint-watermelon lemonade and maybe a cookie. I'm looking around, this place looks off. Its looks old school and not like a bakery. Walk into any bakery and you should smell their products, I wasn't seeing or smelling bakery. It looks like a hardware store. Big Booty Bread Co uses a program called Belly. It's a loyalty program I use on my iPhone. If I like this place, I'll come back and gain points to some free stuff. (I love free!) There is no lie when I say this place makes a great Red Velvet Cupcake. In fact, it's damn good. My cupcake came in the form of a birthday treat leftover. Plenty of folks had already ate their share, there were only a few left on a tray that were of an assorted mix, but the one I grabbed happened to be the last Red Velvet. Upon sinking my teeth in the smooth icing of cream cheese, a sudden realization came upon me: This is good. Really. Freaking. Good.(#1) And as completion of the chomp, chew, and swallow process had taken its course, the moist cake sitting in my stomach asked my brain, "What'd you think?" My brain was too busy soaking up the foodgasm and laid idle as all good 'gasms go. For a split second my eyes rolled back and my silence of mental bliss was interrupted when a friend came over, yelling, "You took the last one!" I looked up and said, "Sorry, but it's mine now. You can eat the other ones. Red Velvet has found a new home .... in my mouth." And sure enough, 3 bites later, it was all gone. I was suddenly a little sad, but only because there were no more left. In a cruel twist of irony, this cupcake was my first meal of the day (#2). I quickly looked back in the dessert bunch to see if I could find a rebound cupcake to keep my fixation alive. I managed to grab another cupcake that tasted like chocolate, but unfortunately it still didn't have the pizazz of the Red Velvet. I later learned it was Big Booty responsible for this Red wonder and I kicked myself for the dozen times I've walked by the place without giving it much thought. That's New York for you. Another thing I learned is beyond the typical bakery items, they have various types of from arepas to soups and sandwiches. I just knew I had to come and take a look for myself. My yearning came to fruition the next morning when I walked to the store to get myself a sample of anything and possibly everything (along with a half dozen Red Velvets) but alas...... they're closed on Sunday. Ok so it turns out my friend used to live next door and is a HUGE fan of their coconut brownies. While that is next on my list, I was being a somewhat health nut when I wandered in (and bumped into said friend) ... and I just got the paleo banana muffin. I was expecting a subpar muffin trying to be "healthy" but just being all dry and dissatisfying. Why I got it, I don't know, I think I like giving myself a false sense of hope that MAYBE this healthy thing will taste just as good as the original version ... But WOW. Empanada review: I wasn't a huge fan. Super greasy and almost with like a cakey dough and both flavors I sampled were quite flavorless. I sampled both the spinach and the spicy beef and although I preferred the spinach that's not saying much. The spicy beef did have egg and green olives involved which I just wasn't a fan of. At $3.95 a pop, the filling was lacking and overall quality just wasn't there. I wouldn't return again (for the empanadas). read more

I always related to the term "Big Booty" and love that this is a true neighborhood bakery with a Latin twist right in my nabe. Killer cafe and sweets- as others say the cupcakes are all good, particularly Dulce de leche. Recently tried their empanadas- $3.50 each- we had a beef and a chicken and they were as good as my faves down in the Taystee Bakery in Miami Beach.
