You know, with my diagnosis of celiac disease I struggle to eat anywhere --- I need gluten-free food. To my surprise, they have a potato pancake what we used to call Latkas, and for $9.99. I got a southwest that was as big as an omelette stuffed with all that yummy onion and green pepper, mushroom, & cheese. On the side, I got a salsa and a sour cream. For $2.99 more you could blockbuster your sides--- so I got two eggs and four strips of bacon for an additional amount, and it was just totally too much to eat, which is a good thing!! They let my cousin eat off the senior menu, even though it was a Saturday so she was happy, and hubs got an apple waffle of some kind. Neither one of them had anything left so that's a good thing. Pleasantly surprised. Service was a bit slow, but was busy, waitress was pleasant. In fact everyone there was super pleasant and nice. They had a buffet on weekends. It's $15.99 a person unfortunately I'd be getting the same thing if I just ordered a smaller breakfast for less of a price. If I could've eaten gluten, I would've gotten the buffet. This is only the second Big Boy we have ever been to. Both were in Michigan. This one badly needs to be remodeled. It was outdated and felt grungy and the bathroom area felt dirty. There was crumbs in the floor around the soup and salad bar and one of the booths has a ni smoking sign on the back of it like that area use to be the no smoking sectuon. My husband and I both ended up ordering Philadelphia Cheesesteak sandwiches. They came with fries but I upgraded mine to onion rings. I had a lemonade and my husband an ice tea. He ordered a cherry crumble pie with ice cream for dessert. When we received our plates I realized I had French fries instead of onion rings. The French fries were tasty so I started to eat them and checked with the waitress to make sure I wasn't charged extra for onion rings. She looked at the slip and stated it was her error and could order them but I declined as I was half done eating. Usually Philadelphia cheese steak sandwiches come with a melted cheese and some onion/pepper mix but these were just beef with a little cheese sauce over the beef. The sandwiches did have ample tender beef in the bun but I would have liked a little more cheese. I had a bite of my husband's cherry crumble pie and thought it tasted floury, like the flour in the crumble didn't get mixed in enough. Actually zero!! First of all, we ordered salads that were supposed to have cheese and crutons... I got none of those. then there was a hole in the booth. The walls were weird. And it was kinda dark in there. There were out of lemonade!!! and no salad bar!!! Then we heard a plate drop and break on the floor. This was our first experience at a Big Boy. We went home very happy! We had at our table a patty melt, a big boy, a super big boy, and a grilled chicken sandwich. The fries were beautiful but very hard, but we ate them anyway. The sandwiches were all delicious but the real winner on the table was the patty melt. The pepper sauce is awesome and the stuff ratio is perfect. Incredible flavor, but you don't get punched in the face, and you aren't licking gobs of sauce off your hands or in need of washing your hands before you go wash your hands. The mushrooms were freshly sautéed and the patty was cooked perfectly. All of our sandwiches were cooked perfectly. My only kinda complaint was the fries, but I don't know if that's just how they are. I'm honestly just so super happy that Big Boy is alive and well in the world, and that it was TASTY! read more

We stopped here on Thanksgiving en route from Chicago to Detroit. This place, like most Big Boys, is rather time-worn but was very clean, and the staff we interacted with were all super friendly and welcoming (though I'm sure they didn't love working on a holiday; it was only open til 3 pm that day.) My dad and I went for the Slim Jim and Brawny Lad sandwiches respectively; the latter is no longer on the printed menu but the waitress said that it's basically a perpetual special. There were ad cards on our table for Romeo red cider and a Detroit Lions shake (I asked what flavor it is, because the pale blue color doesn't really give you a hint; they said orangey from blue Curacao!) Check out the framed old menus around the building (including the hall to the bathroom)! And don't forget to buy yourself a bank or bobble head on the way out! read more

My wife and I were pretty bummed when this place was rumored to be permanently closed according to the listing on Google a few months back. When she heard that they had opened back up we were both excited to try our old favorites yet again. We got take out because: Covid. The wife got her usual which is the Slim Jim basket. When I arrived to pick up the order the associate asked the cook for the fries to complete the order and she quickly jammed this half empty pack of "French Fries" into the bag and stapled it shut so I couldn't check my order before I left. What I brought home to my wife was an abomination. The sandwich looked like either someone sat on it or had already been eaten. There was as much outside the bun as inside and that bun was WET. The tomatoes were hard, white and unripe. Inedible. The fries filled less than half the container and they were soft, floppy, cold, wet and oily. Gross. Considering the prices of takeout food nowadays you would expect more than this mess. read more

I have been a Big Boy patron since they came to town. I've always loved it. I hate that they dumped the Chicken Ala King in the early 90s. I loved that. The staff is always friendly, and you get seated quickly. The good is never horrible. It's usually pretty damn good. Not great, but still delicious. But, the inside just looks depressing, like an old, run down bus station. It needs remodeling again soon. I'm thinking the last time it was remodeled, was when they added the glass dining area. The Cole slaw has changed, though. I used to love it, now it's just not good. So sorry. read more

Located on Columbia Ave in front of Meijer, this Big Boy has been serving food for many years, and I usually go there for a quick breakfast. They have a breakfast buffet for those who wish to over-eat, or you can order off of the menu. The food is usually pretty good, except the last time I visited my bacon and hash-browns were both overcooked. Fortunately, this is not the norm. Overall this place is OK for a quick bite of classic American food. Not great, but not bad either. Friendly service is usually on tap. read more

Not sure why most Big Boy restaurant facilities have gone down hill but the one in Battle Creek is a prime example. The bathroom doors were horrible with dirt and chipped paint. Inside the bathroom I found years of crud on the floor. When we were seated my husbands seat was torn and the floors were extremely sticky. Food was OK but I just couldn't get beyond how dirty this place was. Glad I didn't see the kitchen. Whoever owns or manages this place needs to do a deep cleaning. read more

Going to big boy for a bite to eat is always great. The staff are really friendly and the food is great. I love going to the breakfast buffet on the weekend. I've been going since I was little and the place has always looked the same. The food comes out quick, and it always tastes great. They also have very reasonable prices. This place was horrible. Ordered the broccoli soup ( flavorless), canned soup is 10x's better. My mother in law got the cheese plastic wrap in her omelet, and instead of dismissing the check, the manager just took the plastic cheese OMELETTE off our bill(@%#%^@^#). I've been ordering my stuff to go, and they always have my order right. I usually like going in and getting a Big Boy sandwich. But this last time we went into dine the hostess seated us next to a bunch of other groups of people when they could have clearly spaced us all out. Our waitress yacked up the group next to us very loudly for quite some time but didn't bother to ask how our food was until we were already done. Not impressed with the service. The service was terrible. We were seated and had our drink orders taken by a young female server. Afterwards, she stated that the wait person taking care of us would be right over. Approximately 20 minutes later, without anyone coming over to take our order, a couple was sat near us and not only received their drinks promptly, the order was taken. I asked for our bill for the drinks as we were leaving. When I was paying the bill, I vented my frustration to which the server responded aggressively. I asked her if she was really giving me attitude about this? She again answered aggressively that it was not her problem that the waitress assigned to us was not attentive and she was doing her job taking care of the people in her section. (When sitting us, by the way, she allowed us to pick our table). I stated we could not be back and she snapped back that "We don't want you back!". I asked to speak to the manager who offered a refund and apologized but I want every one to know of the type of people working at the Battle Creek restaurant. read more

Gave this place 2 chances. They messed up both times. First was our group had 3 out of 5 people order the endless pasta. First plates looked good. The second they only gave about 1/4 of the first plate. So they ordered a 3rd plate which took forever! They brought out toddler size portions! The second trip 2 out of 5 people ordered the unlimited soup and salad bar. The lettuce was wilted and brown,the pasta salads had been sitting so long the noodles were getting dry, 3 out of 4 soups were empty, the plates were barely stocked. After complaining to the waitress,whodidn't care,one manager came over and was told that we couldn't eat the food because it was bad. She got irritated,brought out One soup,and dumped new pasta on top of the dry gross pasta! Leaving bad lettuce and empty soups along with one pasta salad not changed at all! So we basically had fruit and croutons. We told a second manager at check out and she gave half off the salad bar...really? That should have been free! Won't be back! read more

Friday night, they were what I consider medium busy and had an abundance of servers. Seated immediately and asked what I wanted to drink. Received my drink 12 minutes later and was told my server would be with me shortly. After another 5 minutes my server took my order. It's now been 25 minutes since I was seated and I still dont have any food, but I do have a second drink. Another two minutes and I now have my onion rings. I ordered a burger with fries and an order of onion rings. Even though when I ordered I said I wanted a burger with fries AND an order of onion rings, the onion rings were apparently put in as an appetizer. Now 40 minutes since I came in and just got my burger. Good thing I ordered the onion rings, because the amount of fries is probably equal to what's in a McDonalds happy meal. Pleasantly surprised that all the food was served hot and was very tasty, so I gave them 3 stars. Just REALLY need to work on the service because there were enough servers that I shouldn't have had to wait so long. read more
