My wife and I have eaten here several times on our trips to Cloudcroft, and we have never been disappointed. The diner is neat and clean with many autographed photos and other memorabilia on the walls. The menu is fairly extensive with many sandwiches, salads and full dinners. Last time we were there my wife thoroughly enjoyed her fried fish, and my hamburger steak was delicious. Prices are reasonable, and wait staff is quite friendly. Nice place to eat. read more

Not very good. Based on our meal I probably wouldn't try it again. We shared the Pork Roast which was bland & dry. Got beans and coleslaw on the side. Beans were not bad, but the coleslaw was lacking even a tiny bit of seasoning. We also got a Jack Burger with grilled onions and a slab of green chili on top. Also bland & dry. I got a side salad to go with the burger instead of fries which the waitress forgot the first time around. When it arrived it consisted of iceburg lettuce, 2 cucumbers, and some shredded cheese. Despite the mediocre food this was by far the most happening place in town on a Saturday night. Not sure if this means that every other restaurant in town is worse, or that the people who live/visit here have really bad taste in food. We're here for the week, and we really like the town, but will probably be eating from home for the remainder of our visit! read more

My family waited there for 1 hour to get our food. When we got in we were not greeted with the greatest attitude, in fact we weren't greeted at all. After 15 minutes of receiving our order we were told that they ran out of chicken so we had to change the order. Then 30 minutes later we still haven't gotten our food but the people who came in after us, by a lot, got their food. The manager sensed our energy and was eyeing us like a hawk which was incredibly rude and annoying. She came over multiple times and said our food was coming "soon". The servers definitely picked favorite tables believe it or not and joked with them. Our food arrived cold and dry and not at all good. Salad was watery, brisket was basically tasteless jerkey, burrito was hot on the outside but cold on the inside-telltale sign of a microwave. We didn't hear any noise from the kitchen until 5 minutes before our food was brought to the table. read more

Can't say I've eaten at a worse restaurant than this, in spite of the great service. The 'veggie wrap' was a flour tortilla stuffed with loads of grilled onions, a tad of mushrooms, one slice of tomato, some lettuce, possibly a few diced green chiles (I think) and a slice of processed cheese. My wife had the chef salad (iceberg lettuce with zero nutrients!)--which was an utter disgrace and horendously overpriced. But then again, maybe the way the chef made circles of the ham that surrounded the plate caused the dish to demand such a high price? Kids enjoyed their rather expensive hotdog and tater tots as well as a pricey corn dog and tater tots. So wish I would have had the courage to let the owner know of my sentiments when I paid the bill. But then again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Maybe if we had ordered and eaten something deep fried, my sentiments would have been different. But then again, doesn't deep-friend food almost always taste good? read more

Ok, first off, it is a family run restaurant. The diner is ingrained into the local populace, but when you consider the size of Cloudcroft, that is not a surprise. We asked family in the area where to eat and they suggested that unless we went to Alamagordo, the better place to go was Big Daddy's Diner. Simply put, the place looks like it was once a house and has been turned into a restaurant. Certainly not the first place to do this, the feel is odd but homey, no pun intended. The waitstaff was friendly, but the service was slow and the place was only half filled. Not generally a problem for us, but when it came to the food, it was difficult to get condiments and extras. I had a green chile burger. Honestly folks, I have had better. My main problem is that I chose salad instead of fries and when the burger got there, it was in a huge basket all alone. It looked sad and uninviting. To me it had little flavor, honestly it tasted like just hamburger with no spices. The other family members in our party did not fare very well either. Finally, we asked for extra fries at the beginning of the meal and by the time they got there we were done eating. I do want to give this place another try as I know sometimes there is an off day. After an hour and a half waiting, we only had our drinks. One party member asked for a refill and had to wait twenty minutes for it. We had to leave because of other engagements and the owner gave us lip, saying this wasn't fast food. No, I don't expect fast food speed at a sit down restaurant, but I do expect to order and be served after being seated for 90 minutes. Another party in the same room and the same size as ours was seated after us, ordered, ate, and paid their bill before us. It's pathetic and unacceptable and the management should learn to handle the crowds better and be pleased that we paid for our sodas. Honestly after the owner's awful attitude I wish we hadn't paid for our drinks. And $8 for 3 sodas after 90 minutes of no service? We'd been there before and enjoyed the food, brought some friends along this time who had never been. Never recommending this place to anyone and never going again. Our waitress was sweet and earnest but our food was bad and cold. I saw our order sitting at the kitchen waiting to be brought to our table for over 10 minutes; no wonder it was cold. The catfish might have been good if it was not cold, but I have my doubts. The pulled pork sandwich was so dry I don't know if chef has tasted his recipe recently. The service was dreadfully slow and disjointed. Maybe they were understaffed, I don't know - but I suggest you try elsewhere. read more

Horrible food! Ordered a cheeseburger and chicken strips. Both were dry and way overlooked...almost like they had been fried earlier in the day (we were there at 2pm) and then re-fried when we ordered. Hamburger was very dry and tasteless. Chicken strips were dark brown, hard crunchy, and chicken was stringy and chewy. Felt like I was eating jerky. Very, very disappointed after seeing so many great reviews. Horrible food!! read more

I don't get what the hype is for this restaurant. It's not 4 stars for me. The one positive was the manager was nice. The bad was my chicken fried steak was hard and nasty. Driving through Cloudcroft and hungry for lunch, the choices seemed a little slim. We kept going to the edge of town and saw half of Cloudcroft parked in front of Big Daddy's. Now we know why. Food was okay at best, but service was definitely the worst. The waitress was more than upset when we requested to change from a table to a booth because the hard seats were hurting my fathers back. She then started complaining about having to clean two table rather than one because our group didn't all fit in the booth. My husband ordered the "all-you-can-eat catfish" plate but when he asked for more she told him that it would take a long time for more catfish because of overwhelming orders even though the restaurant was pretty empty. The bathrooms were dirty and smelled and to make matters worse she started talking bad about us to another waitress right in front of us. Horrible experience! Big Daddy's is always our first stop when going to Cloudcroft , but today they lost loyal customers thanks to her attitude. We ate both breakfast and dinner here In April of this year. The breakfast was amazing, and the chicken fried steak was so good I could have eaten another one by myself. It was huge! The sides we got were corn on the cob, and loaded baked potato. My husband and I shared this meal and asked for an extra plate to split it, however when we got our ticket, they had charged us an extra $4.00 for the extra plate. they never said up front that we would be charged that much for an empty extra plate, otherwise we would have just shared off the plate of food. We have a cabin in Cloudcroft as of this year and definitely will be eating there many times as the food there is that good!!!!! Can't wait to try the fried Catfish. Headed back there again soon and this place is at the top of our list to go eat out even though we can cook our own meals in the cabin. We have been Traveling All over New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. The Best Food we had the whole trip was at Big Daddy's Diner. The minute we walked in, we were greeted and welcomed. The rest rooms were clean, the diner was clean and that told us, this is the place to be. My husband had the Chicken Fried Steak which was not imitation that you get in most places, it was very big and my husband ate every bite of it. I had a ribeye Steak, Oh my gosh, best ever. We decided to go back for more, We both had mexican food and it was absolutely delicious, everything was homemade. We had heard that the owner won a barbque cookoff in New Mexico and came in second and wanted to try the bar b que but unfortunately, they were unable to make bar b que due to the dry conditions. Next time we go, we will for sure look forward to trying the bar b que. I would suggest if you haven't been to Cloudcroft, NM, you should, it is beautiful up there and the people are very friendly. You will find Big Daddy's Diner right on Hwy 82, it is in a good area, not so congested. read more

Giving this place 1 star makes me sad. My second visit was a polar opposite from my first. My first visit was wonderful. The server was friendly and I felt very much at home. I wanted to take my family this second time because my first visit was great. Sadly, the second visit became one of the worst restaurant experiences in my life. I don't know if the two servers and our family got off on a wrong foo, but the servers seemed very annoyed at us. When we got to our table, we asked one server to wipe our table because it was wet in one spot. Next, my wife asked the other server what their specials were and her question was greeted with a bad attitude. When I asked about the steak, the server annoyingly said they didn't have any, nor did they have much of a BBQ selection. When I asked what happened to strike up a conversation, my question was greeted with a bad attitude. As we waited for our food, the servers DID NOT ask how we were or if we needed any refills or keep us updated on our food's status. However, they did entertaining the other guests. When we got our food, they DID NOT ask if we were OK or if we needed refills. However, paid attention to the other guests. When we were done with our food we weren't asked if wanted dessert. However, they did ask the other guests. When I tried to call the attention of the servers to refill my drink, it was almost ask if they were avoiding eye contact. Eventually, I called one of them out and asked for a refill. Throughout our dinner, I was hoping the service would get better as I would give them the benefit of the doubt. I kept telling my wife my first visit here was great. Sadly, it went from bad to worse. I am not one to place the ethnic/race card, but it sure felt like we were discriminated against as we were the only non-white guests. I know my review will not lessen the traffic to this restaurant. But it would be nice if someone from that place read this and did something so that others will not experience what we went through. As a result of this, I DO NOT RECOMMEND GOING TO THIS RESTAURANT.
