Excellent seafood and sides! My wife and I ordered shrimp and dungeness crab with potatoes. Wow! They bring it out in a bag and dump it on a wax paper tablecloth. You eat with your hands. The spices are finger licking good. Great service too! read more

We've been here a couple times now and it is consistently amazing! The owners and staff are very friendly. Glad to see that this place is catching on! We detoured here from our trip up I-5 last night and it was well worth it. We got 1 LB of peel-and-eat shrimp and 1 LB of crab legs. This stuff is finger-licking good! First time visit tonight. The place was packed! We had to wait a little longer than a normal dining experience but it was well worth it! Our hosts continually acknowledged that we were waiting longer than the norm but assured us everything is cooked to order. Cajun fry starter was hot and spiced amazingly. We had crab poppers as an appetizer which were basically made to order crab ranguns which were very good. Our main course was crab, shrimp, and corn in the house sauce medium spicy. Stumbled into this place after leaving shubert's ice cream. Love this place...the décor of the restaurant needs some attention but outside of that the food is great. Everytime we go we crave it more. The sauce is awesome specially with some steamed rice...yes they have steamed rice on the menu. Seafood is always fresh and served on wax paper on the table. It's pretty well sized place so waiting for a table isn't an issue. The food was delivered quick and well made. It's not the best Cajun seafood I've had by any means but it's good. Wow! Delicious crab and shrimp. We had the mild House sauce and could have had it a little hotter. Next time we will try the medium. Cajun fries are nice and crisp. Also had the lobster tail and clam chowder both of which didn't compare to the rest. We didn't get any corn or potatoes but we should have. They would have been delicious in the sauce. Good start for a new restaurant in town. Concept ok - but very very messy eating. Improvements needed in decor, need real silverware, glasses, paper towels not flimsy cheap napkins. Hand washing sink ok but no hot water to dissolve grease on hands. Soap watery. Food plentiful, expensive, but tasty. No liquor license yet. Will come back when I can get beer or wine. read more

We asked for medium spicy, which had just enough of a bite to it (but not too much); it was perfectly spicy for us. We've been three times and will continue to go back. If this restaurant makes it I will be very surprised. We had out of town guests in May 2016 and decided to try this place out. It is very expensive and extremely messy. No finger bowls before or after. They do have a sink in the restaurant where you can clean up afterwards but there was always a line to wash your hands. After we got home my husband and I were not feeling well. Stomach cramps with having to run to the bathroom (I won't go into detail here). I called our guest because they left to drive home after they ate and one of them got the cramps while driving home. Several weeks later I was talking to a friend about it and she said she had several other friends who had eaten there and also got sick from the food. I think if you want fresh fish and seafood you better go to the ocean and eat at a restaurant there. Chico is just too far from the shoreline to get fresh seafood. read more

I absolutely love this place!! I am so glad Chico has Big Hot Crab. It fulfills a craving you never even knew you had! So delicious - I typically get 1/2 lb shrimp, corn on the cob, and potatoes tossed in house style sauce extra spicy with a side of rice! I leave stuffed and so satisfied! He sat there and was ringing up a stack of receipts one by one slow as ever and I was trying to order to go and after ten minutes I asked how much longer it would be until I could order and he said "oh you want to order to go? An insult to seafood. We went to dinner and kept hearing a "Ding" in the back over the wall between dining and the cooking area. Moments later a server would come out and present the seafood. When we got ours, she spread it out over the paper table cover. The sauce was fine, the seafood was RUBBER. We asked the server if the seafood was fresh or frozen. She confirmed frozen. At that point I went to look behind the wall -- microwave! We have eaten seafood in coastal places from 4 star to unknown remote seacoast village BBQs. We have had good seafood in Minnesota. Big Hot Crab fails mediocre in Minneapolis at the airport! Don't bother. Makes me wonder why Long John Silvers failed. read more

Came back recently and it's just as good as I remember. Such a good deal for Cajun seafood! Honestly, this is the way to eat Louisiana style.... I don't really know why people complain. It's supposed to be with your hands and the plastic utensils are there for the convenience of the mess. Seriously other establishments in big cities will also only give you plastic utensils and plastic cups. You're using your hands anyway. The seafood is pretty darn fresh for being a place so up north and this is coming from a girl who eats seafood every week in SoCal. Trust me, you really can't complain about the quality of seafood. So come in with an open mind about Cajun style seafood and know what you're to expect. Don't expect fine dining, it's not supposed to be! It's supposed to be good food for a good price! read more

Went here for the first time tonight and this has to be by far the best sea food I've had in california. So glad chico has something like this now and it's definatly gonna be a weekly thing from now on! I really wanted to love this place, the idea is wonderful. Unfortunately immediately upon entering the restaurant it began to disappoint. The building is extremely dated and appears to be the remnants of a dilapidated 70's era diner (Think run down Dennys). From there cheap faux brick paneling was put up and fishing nets installed over the windows which acted as a the restaurants very own bacteria culture and dust garden. Looking into the kitchen/serving area I'm honestly not sure how this restaurant passes a health inspection. The floors are absolutely filthy, the equipment is ancient, the cabinets are coming apart and has a general feeling of being unsanitary. Also the owner rolled a trash can across from our table in the back serving area. Not exactly what you want to look at while eating. Ok, so on to the service. They are very short staffed. We waited for at least 30 minutes prior to being seated. While waiting we observed multiple tables that just sat with previous guests remnants on them. Only one busser, which I believe may have been one of only two waitresses. Once seated the waitress was pleasant and although she was literally running as fast as she could, she at least tried. Unfortunately since she was spread so thin she was unable to be very attentive. Now for the food, it wasn't horrible, but certainly wasn't great. The shrimp tasted a bit fishy. The sauce was very oily. My two favorite parts of the meal were the potatoes and the corn. The sauce tasted reasonably good but since it was so oily it left us not feeling well. The prices were steep, total bill was $76.00 for 2lbs of seafood, two small corns, two potatoes & two beers. Had the ambiance warranted the price they might be able to charge it, but for us.... we will not be back. They are clearly making money as they were very busy, my suggestion is to put some money back into the business. Please.... clean the place up. read more

The Big Hot crab is delicious! I love how they pour the food in a bag of flavors and let you dig in. Only only complaint I have is the napkins are too thin and flimsy for all the messy food.
