Really decent bbq. I wouldn't say it's up there with the big options but it is really good. Tried the pulled pork sandwich and the burnt end burrito. The pulled pork was good, I added their regular bbq sauce and had a size of their baked beans and it was very fillling. The meat had a little Smokey flavor and the sauce only enhanced it. The burnt ends burrito was also VERY filling. Wasn't a big fan of the coleslaw inside but besides that, it all melded together and tasted amazing. Preferred their sweet bbq sauce with this one. My daughter had them cater her wedding. They did an amazing job. We had sausage and cheese appetizers while pictures finished up. She picked 3 meats, the amazing Mac n cheese and cheese corn and potato salad. All was fresh and tasty. We got so many compliments on the food. The servers were friendly and fun. They cleaned up tables as people finished their plates. Nothing I expected them to do. They also kept asking what else they could do to help. Ordered $30 worth of food on Doordash. Showed missing my side item and no sauce at all. Called up. They offered to give me sauce and a side of mac and cheese if I drove up there. If I wanted to drive up there I wouldn't of ordered through DoorDash. (I'm from out of state and up here for work and staying at a hotel) Food might of been pretty good if I had got what I ordered and some sauce for the ribs and turkey. I come here every so often. Love the food and the environment. The bbq sauce is top tier in my opinion. I get the bbq flight of sweet, regular, and spicy. They all taste amazing. I feel the ribs are hit or miss. I always love the pulled pork, but the only reason I ding it 1 star from a 5 was my last experience. I went out with my buddies and the brisket was kind of cold and had had mostly hard cooked ends. You know the kind that where kind of like chewing though tooth picks. We came here for dinner after working out at Genesis gym across the street. The customer service from the gentleman behind the counter serving the food was exceptional. He knows the product and is great at making recommendations. Very helpful. The vibe is great. Music playing in the background and large tvs with sports on. It's a relaxed casual atmosphere. You come in order at the counter and sit down with your food. There is a fountain drink machine. It's a Pepsi restaurant and has sweet and unsweet tea. The ribs were tender and really good. The burnt ends were plentiful and good flavor. The original barbecue sauce was my go to. The sweet sauce was not bad. The rub is hit and miss at best. We've been a half dozen times. 3of those trips the food was great. We always share the big combo platter. On good days the meat is fresh, hot and juicy. On the off days the steam table looks as if the food had been there awhile. Staff is pleasant. Tables aren't always clean. Be sure to ask for freshly cooked fries. Inconsistency is my reason for 3 stars. Easy carry out for soccer games. Not on our regular rotation but we'll stop in when out that way. read more

Usually I will have a picture of the food to include, but I hope the lack of one is a testament to how great the food looked, smelled, and tasted. Our friends graciously had us over for dinner and had gotten The Rub for takeout. I had the Hillbilly bowl and my partner had the BBQ Burrito. Both were delicious and really worked, though the Burrito was a standout. The Hillbilly bowl dropped the rating a little bit, because the potatoes in the bowl seemed to have been an older batch and in general, lots of bbq sauce was needed to doctor up how dry the potatoes were. However, the burnt ends really saved the dish and were so juicy and flavorful. It was my first time having The Rub and I'll be back again in the future to try again! read more

This was so promising - but - don't come in the middle of the afternoon because all of the food is leftover from the lunch rush and it's dry and overcooked. I ordered the Hash Bowl, which looked very interesting and so much potential for being exceptional. But - since we were eating at 3:00 in the afternoon instead of 12:00 noon the food was all dried up. The burnt ends were hard, dry and very hard to chew. It's not a holiday weekend in Kansas City unless some BBQ is involved; so I drove from the northland all the way out to Kansas' 4th largest city - Olathe to check off another place on my BBQ list - The Rub. Unfortunately it rubbed me the wrong way. I ordered the 3 ribs and brisket with onion straws. The brisket was sliced razor thin; I've never seen any BBQ joint slice meat so thin. I assume that it allows the meat to fold and create the illusion of more meat in the pile. As far as taste - it was tender and had a tinge of smoke. The ribs were even a bigger disappointment. They were fairly small and the outer bark was leather. I used the 3 sauces for dipping my onion straws. The original was lame, the spicy had a terrible after taste yet the sweet was actually a nice dip. Certainly not worth a drive across town for a 2nd try. One and done. read more

Enjoyed the food here. My wife and I tried this place on a whim as we were in the area. It was a rainy day but there wasn't a wait to order when we went in. In addition to BBQ sandwiches, I appreciate that they have BBQ bowls which you don't find everywhere. I enjoyed the Nebraska Bowl, which includes sausage, pork, cheesy corn, beans, and onion strings. I enjoyed the combination of flavors and the meat was good itself. They have an original BBQ sauce and a hot. I was in KC on business and I was staying in the hotel directly behind The Rub. Since it was close I decided to give them a shot instead of my other "go to" KC BBQ spot (Joe's) THE PLACE IS VERY CLEAN & INVITING I want in at a slow time (3:30PM) so it wasn't too busy which gave me an opportunity to talk with the staff a little. I told them I was from out of town and they boasted that their ribs @ burnt ends were better than the competition, so I ordered ribs, burnt ends, and brisket based on the confidence (which I loved) THE THREE SAUCES- I tried original, sweet, and hot. Of the three I thought the "sweet" complimented the meats the most. In giving an honest review I can understand why they were confident, the ribs were fantastic! Perfect savory bark and tender. TLDR Version: Must Order: Sausage, Burnt Ends, & Corn Bread Pretty Good: Brisket, Cheesy Corn, Mac 'n Cheese, & Beans Buyer Beware: Ribs, Chicken, & Carolina Slaw Don't Order: Pulled Pork I am always excited for the opportunity to try a new KC BBQ spot as I close in on 70 KC BBQ joints. The first thing I noticed was the layout. They are very well set-up for to go orders. When it comes to the meats, the star is the beef Polish sausage. This is one of the better sausages in town - meaty, flavorful, nice pop to the casing. The burnt ends are right behind, meaty, nice char, and rich flavor with nice marbling. The brisket is good - fatty but it crumbles. Nice profile. Pretty solid. The Ribs have a nice flavor but they are overly seasoned and over cooked. This place offers a number of sandwich meats and the ribs should be one of them. They are so "fall off the bone" that they barely get the bones on to your plate. The way The Rub prepares it, they should just sell an elevated McRib. These are over cooked and not meant to be ordered as a rack. (Later put some on bread with their sauce? Fantastic) They offer sliced, smoked chicken breast which is a rare BBQ find. A little dry but forgiven because smoking a boneless chicken breast is incredibly difficult to do and retain moisture. The pulled pork was DREADFUL. I appreciate that they serve it fry and don't drown it in sauce BUT THEY SHOULD. I don't understand how any BBQ joint can mess up a pork butt but this is just awful. It was like chewing on a ball of yarn. So tough and stringy. The sandwiches use Roma buns. So soft and doughy in the finest KC tradition. The sauces are sublime and have nice texture. The hot sauce is indeed blazing. I loved the hot for the chicken and the original for almost everything else. The sweet was nice with the sausage and cornbread. Actually, I'd happily dip the corn bread or sausage in maple syrup. And that sugar crusted cornbread?! Let's talk about this manna from the gods. So doughy and fresh with delicious flavor and the delightful flaky sugar topping. I will definitely add this to any order in the future. White cheddar Mac was thick, gooey, and delicious. The cheesy corn was more like a cream corn with a signature sweetness. It tasted fresh and wonderful. A truly special side. The beans were a medley of different types - robust and savory. No chunks of meat like most beans but still really fantastic flavor. The Carolina slaw was suggested by the guy at the counter. There's a lot going on here. It tries so hard to be a Carolina style, and a vinegary style, and crunchy, and tangy, and spicy, and refreshing that it ends up being none of them. Just comes up short and limp. Overall, I will return. I just won't get the pork or slaw again. They do some cool stuff with bowls that I look forward to trying. read more

First off, the level of service here is absolutely AMAZING! I visited KC and placed an order for pick up the following morning to grab on my way out of town. I left them a message with the order that I would be putting the BBQ in a cooler on ice for a 5-hour drive. When I showed up, they already had the BBQ wrapped tightly and in a tinfoil pan. They even gave me a bag of ice to put in the cooler!! They were super friendly and very helpful. Now to the food...it was absolutely amazing! I ordered a beef brisket sandwich to eat before I hit the road and it was like butta! And to top it off, their fries are fresh cut and delicious! I will definately be coming back here the next time I am in town. Oh yeah, their burnt ends are ACTUALLY burnt ends, not just cubed chunks of brisket (not from the point) that Jack Stack and Q39 offer to keep up with demand. read more

We ate at The Rub on Friday, went back to get take out on Saturday and then downtown to the "other" well-known place on Sunday. I always recommend this joint. We came here when we were house hunting in Olathe 7 years ago. It became our regular BBQ spot from then on. The brisket is outstanding. It's great to find a spot that doesn't overdo the seasoning and lets the quality meats speak for themselves. The Rub offers a handful of slightly uncommon choices such as pork tacos and burritos, and bowls with cornbread or fried potatoes or cheesy corn and beans, with a variety of bbq meats, cheese, fried onions, sour cream, etc. on top. They also feature good ole normal KC BBQ stuff too - ribs, burnt ends, sausage that's a little spicy and sliced in coins, tasty fresh cut fries, and good specials that occasionally offer great value. There are a few patio tables outside on the sidewalk which make for a great place to enjoy a meal when the weather is nice. I recently visited at lunch time with a plan to order their Fatboy jumbo sausage and pork sandwich, but upon my arrival I discovered the special of the day was 1/2 rack of ribs and a side for $9.99. Are you kidding me? The rib meat falls off the bone and I'm a fairly light eater, so I can easily make two meals out of a 1/2 rack. (To-go boxes are stacked at the far right end of the counter where you place your order.) My hands were tied, I was forced to order the special. The ribs can occasionally be a little overdone around the edges, but the majority of the meat is very tender with good flavor and texture. Specials change each day so don't count on getting the same deal I received. Spicy BBQ sauce is kept at the counter to the right of the register near the to-go boxes, rather than on the table with their regular sauce and another sweeter sauce. The spicy sauce can be poured into small containers and carried to your table - it's very spicy and will make your eyes water after a few bites if you use it generously. But, it's VERY good, with the consistency slightly thinner than ketchup. I also found the cheesy corn to be a little different than most KC establishments which usually contain just as much cheese as corn. The Rub's cheesy corn is mostly corn, which is probably a good thing for anyone who cares about the health of their arteries, and besides, it tastes great. On 1/19/18, I placed a to-go order and when I arrived home with my food I discovered they forgot to include my fries. I assume they probably would have made it up to me if I had alerted them to the problem, but that particular night I didn't make the effort to contact them about the situation. Yes, it's a bummer, but it happens with almost every restaurant so I'm not going to hold it against them unless it occurs again. As of the day I'm writing this, the average review rating at The Rub is a 3. They're located in a strip center so they don't get any points for cool BBQ atmosphere, but it's a nice, attractive facility and the BBQ is very competitive with the other highly rated KC favorites. I should have been suspicious, because there was only one other customer in the restaurant at 7 PM on a weeknight The most important thing to me at any restaurant is the quality of the food. Whatever category of food, you serve, it should be the best it can be. I had burnt ends and sliced brisket with a side of creamed corn. All three were clearly old food. I've never had brisket so tough, dry, and chewy. It reminded me of a beef version of bacon. A couple of the burnt ends were hard as a rock and something about the creamed corn you could tell it was not that fresh. All three dishes could have been excellent, but because of how old the food was, they were not. I should've paid attention to the reviews first. With so many barbecue options in Kansas City that are amazing I doubt this place is going to make it very long unless they address food quality issues. read more
