    Cornbread and Butter

We visited Brobecks BBQ on 07-29-2026 about 3:30 pm. This was our first time at Brobeck's BBQ. Parking was plentiful on two sides (north and west) of the building as well as many other spaces in the parking lot. There are well marked handicapped spaces near the door. Easily accessible. Upon entry we were greeted and told we could sit wherever we felt most comfortable. There was a nice quantity of various seating including booths and tables. We selected a booth. Within a minute, Holly introduced herself as our server and mentioned the menus were at the table and she took our drink orders. We all got water with varying amounts of ice since they don't have Diet Dr Pepper, Holly kept our waters maintained as we preferred throughout the meal. She went to get our waters and returned with them, asked us if we knew what we wanted, had any questions, or needed a few more minutes. We were ready. I had already looked at the menu online so was ready. I ordered the full slab of spare ribs which comes with two sides ($26.99). My selections were the side salad with honey mustard dressing, as well as the sweet potato waffle fries (plus $0.50). The ribs had a nice amount of meat, and the area in the restaurant was a nice smoky aroma, but the sad part was that my ribs were dry. Not sure if they cooked them hotter/faster rather than low/slow or if that is how Brobecks ribs usually are but I would not return if that is how the ribs are all the time. The side salad was a nice size, about half of a nine inch plate, was cold, fresh, had tomatoes and cheese. The dressing was in a packaged container on the side and it had a nice flavor. Two packets of butter crackers were included. The sweet potato waffle fries were also very good, crisp but not greasy, and a large quantity as if for a couple of people. When we got the bill we noted they charged an extra fifty cents for those and that was not mentioned on the online menu, so that is something to be aware about. My wife got the smoked chicken which came with two sides ($12.99). For her options she got the side salad with honey mustard dressing, and the green beans. It also came with five slices of pickle. Sadly, she showed us her chicken inside that looked and she said tasted very dry. The breast was a bit challenging to cut through and she did not eat the wing as it was basically bone left from overcooking. That was disappointing since she was really looking forward to an excellent smoked chicken. She commented that the salad was nice and fresh, a nice size, great dressing. The green beans were a good flavor, had a nice texture, not mushy. We had a guest with us. He ordered the full slab of ribs with two sides ($27.99). His sides were the side salad with honey mustard dressing, and the steak fries (a large quantity as if for a couple of people). He said that his ribs were dry, were the driest of any places he had tried them, was disappointed. The salad and fries were the highlights of his meal so good there were so many fries. The salad was fresh and plentiful while the fries were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. As we were eating Holly brought out three plates each with a nice piece (about 3x3) of cornbread and butter on top. She said that comes with the meal and they like to serve them fresh for best flavor. The cornbread was, in fact, very good. It was soft and moist as if if had actually just come out of the oven. It was not overcooked and the butter on top was a perfect complement to the cornbread. Holly came by the table every 5-7 minutes to see if things were going well, if there were any plates or anything to remove, and if we needed any take home containers. She was unobtrusive while still being attentive and pleasant. There were two BBQ sauces on the table, Brobecks BBQ (regular) and Brobecks Smokin' Ember (spicy), as well as condiments. There is a men's and women's restroom. Each are for an individual person with a toilet and a sink. Well stocked and clean though possibly a tight fit for some with larger bodies. Our bodies were fine but we have some friends who would likely prefer to wait and go elsewhere for relief otherwise than washing their hands. This visit to Brobecks was not the best insofar as the meats. The service, atmosphere, cleanliness, and environment were all good as were the sides, salads, and cornbread. We may try to come again in the future but won't go out of our way to do so. The Kansas City area has numerous BBQ places with excellent, moist and tender, BBQ and - for the money - it may be best to go where we know the results are best. The bill is provided at the table and you pay the server. There was no additional charge for using a credit card. The receipts are nice and clear, good ink printing on the white paper. When we were leaving we were provided with very nice good byes and thank you for coming from a few of the employees.

Brobeck's has been on my to-do list for many years, so I was glad to finally stop in while I was in their neighborhood. I had just finished a 6 stop caffeine crawl and was wired to the max and wasn't really hungry, but knew that I needed some food of substance in my belly before my jitters turned to convulsions. I was expecting a bit of an upscale vibe with it's Indian Creek / Overland Park address, but it felt like walking into a small town diner; and that's a positive for me. The friendly waitress told us she recommended the ribs and burnt ends and they were known for their ham salad. Ham salad? at a BBQ joint? Hmmm... that's a strange niche to be known for but okay. After placing my order she returned with a complimentary 4 oz condiment cup filled with ham salad and some crackers. I understand now! That was delicious and I regret now not taking home a quart of the stuff to pig out on with some fancy crackers or gourmet chips this weekend. I ordered the burnt end sandwich with a slaw topper. The sandwich was large and sauce free to showcase the smoked meats. Although it was not the best burnt ends that I've experienced, there's no shame in their game; with a nice bark / end and flavorful tender smoky beef. The size of the sandwich was larger than expected for the price point and the 3 sauces at the table made for some nice alternating dipping options. Brobecks deserves a return visit from me when I'm ready to devour more of that menu - the "All you can eat ribs" special for $27 on Wednesday nights would be tempting, but fortunately I work Wednesday evenings so I won't be making a gluttonous fool of myself. The to-go ham salad next time - bets are off for a gluttonous adventure behind locked doors!

Burnt Ends, one baby back rib, beans, and really good cheesy corn.

Food- really good Service - good Ambiance - a non-de-plume bbq joint 1st time here as of 1/28/25. The second you walk in you get the BBQ aroma, and the hint that "this is going to be good!" Had the burnt ends and 1 rib combo with baked beans and cheesy corn as my 2 sides. Beans are good for sure. Cheesy corn is almost as good as J.Stack IMHO. Baby Back rib was so good that I may need to get at least a 1/2 slab next time. Burnt Ends were soft and chewey, smoky and great flavor. Nice touch @ the table of a good KC BBQ sauce AND a good NC BBQ sauce as well (more mustard based). Very casual spot a mini-Mahomes throw away from Wooden Spoon on Nall and 103rd.

    Cheesy Corn

Burnt ends were very dry. Super sad. The barbecue sauce has a cloyingly sweet artificial brown sugar flavor. Unremarkable bland glommed up macaroni and cheese which was more pasta than anything else like flavor or cheese. The cheesy corn was very good. Plenty of wonderful black pepper mixed with cheesy flavor. Very dry small chunks of pork belly on the pork belly Cobb salad. The salad was otherwise very well appointed with ingredients like cheese, egg, and onion. Tasty soft homemade $1 cookies. Chocolate cake was kinda dry but the buttercream frosting was good.

Great food, generous portions, excellent value for the money. Prompt service. Sauce is rich and the spicy mustard sauce you might be tasting the rest of the day.

This is a great barbecue restaurant located just north of Winstead's, near Roe and 435. The ham salad is their specialty and it is magnificent! It was almost as good as my grandma used to make. That is a huge compliment as she was considered to be the best cook and baker in her town. The spare ribs here are some of the best I've had in Kansas City! The baby back ribs were very good also but I prefer the former. The coleslaw was creamy, but not too sweet. The beans weren't cloyingly sweet like Slaps (which are disgusting), and they have a little mustard in them and some meat as well. Pretty decent beans. I really did not care for the burnt ends. They were brisket burnt and about 50% fat in all. I had to pick them apart and throw several pieces away that were only fat. I guess the chance you take. I will most certainly be back for the ribs and the coleslaw. The ham salad is all time. Great spot!

    These "sausages" resembled hot dogs

Wow... Y'all call this BBQ?!?! It definitely smelled like tasty smoke when I walked in, but the food I got was anything but... Service was moderately decent, but friendly. The menu was normal and decent. I opted for their brisket and jalapeño sausage along with beans and slaw as sides. The brisket was horrible! I can't believe any smokehouse or BBQ joint would plate something like that. It was clearly made ahead of time, like yesterday and then pan seared or microwave or heated in some inappropriate way for service. There were cooked juices/grease all over the plate in fact - GROSS! Check the pics, no brisket should ever look like that! The sausage resembled and very smooth external casing texture, like hot dogs. The bite texture matched that and the flavor definitely wasn't of a smoked jalapeño sausage, rather one of a cooked hot dog... very disappointing. The sides weren't that great either... I had to add tons of salt & pepper to the slaw and the beans were just hopeless. Sad and disappointed because this is the type of BBQ I'd expect where I live, in the Northern VA/DC area, but not at all what I'd every expect from the second best BBQ region in the world (Texas is most definitely, without a doubt, 100% the BEST! And it's places like this that prove that point). Maybe it was an off day... I don't know. But in my case, I don't visit here often, so you only get one chance to get it right... all restaurants should know this and act this way. I'd never return.

Everything here is fantastic, but hands down my favorite is the ham salad with chips and crackers! Our server was just the sweetest, and took excellent care of us. Daily lunch specials during the week, and fabulous family style deals. Plus, they're now open on Sundays for carry out for football!

    Ol Ray's Favorite
    Rick N.

The staff was super friendly, and the place was clean and busy. I got the Ol Ray's Favorite. I chose jalapeño cheddar sausage, pulled pork, and sliced brisket. I had white cheddar mac n cheese and coleslaw for sides. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was thinly sliced, which made it dry. Had a little heat and good flavor but dry. I should have gotten the sausage chunked instead of sliced. I think it would have been juicier. The pulled pork was lightly smoked, but it was dry, too. The sliced brisket was excellent, though! It had great smoke flavor. The house bbq sauce was really good. Slaw was bland, and the mac n cheese was ok. Overall, it wasn't bad trip.

It is not acceptable to be shouted at by employees of a restaurant. "Hi, MAY I HELP YOU?!" Not once or twice, but often three or four times from different staff members. And often, just as you step inside the door!!! It's not catchy, it's not funny, and it's not helpful. It concerns me that this legendary Kansas City standard for barbecue will not be around in another few years because there is a visible dislike for being shouted at at a restaurant for your food order. They stated for the ribs plate, you'd get about 3 or 4, depending on the weight, but it would be nice to note that down somewhere that when paying $20, expect 3 pieces. Ive gotten double that and about the same price at other bbq spots, hence my disappointed and surprised when opening the container. Mac and cheese had huge shell noodles, which was cool but on the watery side. Potato salad was decent, got the job done but a little bland. Sauces are also on the tangy side, and if you're a sweet bbq sauce gal like me, it wasn't hitting the spot. Overall was nice giving a try, but will prob be going elsewhere for my bbq needs!
