It breaks my heart to say goodbye to Big Star. I moved to Ohio a week ago and on "National Taco Day" I find myself longing for a couple of their tacos. Big Star was always so easy to me. Everyone that tries it loves it! I could stop by there 3 times in one week and still not be tired of it (guilty!). Its open late, its open for brunch, I can sit inside or outside, the service is usually good and quick, and they even take credit cards now! Hands down, the fish taco aka the Taco De Pescado is my absolute favorite. The chipotle mayo under the fish and the slaw on top just bring it all together, perfect harmony! While the fish taco will never be replaced, I have explored the menu a bit further. Every now and then I'll get a Walking Taco, the Taco de Papas con Rajas, or the Taco de Zanahorias (all 3 vegetarian options). I would rank the Taco de Papas in second. It's spicy and small so it's nice to throw in the mix every now and then. Overall, you can't go wrong. Big Star is good af. Oh! I also love their chips and guac! You can really taste the lime and the radish on top adds a wonderful crunch. I've even started adding radish when I make guac at home (thanks for the inspiration). If you ever decide to expand..Columbus, Ohio is a pretty sweet city. We'll take you with open arms! Big Star is such a well known Wicker Park staple that I've passed by countless times when I've been in the area. It was great to check this place out the other night with a couple of my friends for a taco dinner. Positives from my experience: -The traditional lime margarita was perfect in every way. It tastes really natural and not overly sweet. -The guac was super fresh, and I loved both of the spicy salsas that were served with the chips. -The large outdoor seating area is ideal for the warmer months. -The fish taco was my favorite taco out of the three different ones I tried. -The service was really fast (considering how busy it was). The tacos came out about 5 minutes after ordering. The one negative thing from my experience: -I really wish they would add some black beans or rice to the menu as a side. This is not your typical taco spot. It's more new age Mexican. I don't really come here for the tacos to be honest. I very much used to enjoy their tilapia fish tacos but they keep changing and updating their menu in a good way. I think my favorite taco right now is their Panza and their papas tacos. I do very much like their guac however and their margaritas. I'm the type that can't have more than one because I'm used to sugary margs that upset my stomach but I have found myself ordering two pitchers of margs here. I very much enjoy their regular lime ones but their spicy ones are good food Ultimately I come here for the ambience and the fact that it's dog friendly and not to mention I have an insane crush on my server Natalia. I wanted some good tacos and margaritas so I saw this place had some good reviews so I decided to check it out with my boyfriend. We came here around 6pm on a Saturday. There was already a line ahead of us when we approached the host. They told us that there was 18 groups ahead of us and that they do not give estimated times because they really don't know how long it would take. Which made no sense to me because there were open tables everywhere. Anyways my boyfriend and I decided to go to the bar (open again a lot of open tables). We ordered a pitcher of margarita which was about 44 bucks and we each got about 4 drinks each out of it. Which wasn't bad at all for the price. Like me say the margaritas were strong ! We also order Guac and chips while we waited. Literally 10 minutes later our table was ready. So we closed the tab at the bar, picked up our drinks and chips and we loved to the table. I was visiting Chicago on business and had an Airbnb off Milwaukee, super close to Big Star. We have a similar place in Seattle and when I walked by, I knew I had to give this place a try. It was a nice afternoon and the outside dining was bustling, along with most of the tables inside. There was a bit of room at the bar, so I got cozy there. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered a margarita which was delicious and strong! It's nice to slightly taste the liquor and not only overwhelming sour or sweet notes from the mix used. Nicely done. I ordered chips and salsa; chips were tasty and the salsas were delicious. I especially enjoyed the green one. Super tangy, neither too salty and hot. I also ordered both pork tacos. They arrived after not too long of a wait. Both I equally enjoyed and had nice flavors and tender pork. The only reason why I've taken off a star is due to the fact that both tacos were extremely salty. The flavors were awesome but they were both realllllyyyyyy salty. :/ Overall, I would absolutely recommend trying Big Star. Stopped in here on an early Saturday evening around 6. Amazingly, because the place was so packed, we got a table for 2. Our drinks and appetizers (chips and guacamole) came very quickly. So did our food. The only bad thing is that out waitress wasn't very attentive. She seemed to be paying attention to all her other tables more than ours. We came here at around 2:30 on a Saturday and the wait was about a half hour. The weather was chilly, but we still walked around the nearby shops while we waited, so it went by quickly. This place has been my favorite in Chicago so far for several reasons. The tacos are flavorful and are always cooked to perfection. The taco al pastor is my favorite thus far. It has this pineapple pico de Gallo that is 10. The taco de pescado is so good that even my boyfriend, whom hates cooked fish l, loves it. The taco de papas con rajas has a chipotle sauce with a kick. The walking taco is okay but the other tacos are just way better. The queso fundido is served in this cute little skillet and is amazing. The chips aren't too salty and the salsas are awesome because they have flavor and aren't just spicy. The drinks are strong so if you love tequila, this is your spot! Came here with some friends to grab dinner on a Wednesday, we had a reservation for 6:45 and had no problem getting our table on time. I thought it was a cute place, and even though it's a lot of outdoor seating, they had a lot of umbrellas for shade and fans in the underhang area on the patio. Drinks were good, I had the strawberry slush, which I thought was excellent, but if you don't love tequila, I wouldn't recommend. My friends had the paloma and a canned lemonade seltzer, both were good. Taco wise, I thought they were alright. We got barbacoa, chicken, fish, and al pastor, and they were all just a touch dry. They needed more of the salsa on them. You can order crema on the side but I think it would be nice if it came with them. We also got chips, salsa and guac, which they did refills on the chips and salsa, which was a nice touch. I also got the veggies en escabache, which I thought had a nice kick. One bonus of this place was that their food was gluten-free friendly. One of my friends has celiac and she was able to eat the chips and salsa and all but one of the tacos. My friend and I went to Big Star last night (Friday night around 6:30pm). It's the middle of the winter, so the outside patio isn't open. We waited at the bar for about an hour before getting a table. The bar was also pretty busy and we had to be a little aggressive to get our drink orders in. I had the Grevious Angel Sour and the Gold Dust Gimlet. Surprisingly the Gimlet was much more sour than the Sour. It must be the grapefruit and not enough mezcal, as there was very little smokey flavor. I would recommend the Gimlet. We shared the queso fundido and got some tacos! The queso fundido was very good and I liked how the soft and warm tortillas. They mellowed out the chorizo and made it all very nicely balanced and not too salty. I had the taco de panza (pork belly) and taco al pastor (pork). Both were pretty good! I really enjoyed the pineapple on the al pastor taco. Overall, I think Big Star was decent and the food enjoyable. However, I wouldn't go back because I found it to be overpriced and not worth the wait. read more

Was so impressed with how the team handled the COVID pandemic. The host took our temperature before we were seated. There was plenty of seating outside and heaters were available if needed. Our server was pleasant and attentive, but did not rush us at all. We started with Chips and Salsa. The salsa verde had a bit of a kick, but was fresh and tasty. We ordered a variety of tacos, Al Pastor, Panza and Chorizo Verde. The Al Pastor was my favorite. The pork was tender and seasoned just right. The grilled pineapple added just the right amount of sweetness, offset by fresh cilantro. The Panza had a bit of spice , but none of the tacos were too spicy. There was a nice selection of beers and we selected a local brew , Beer for Tacos. Definitely going to purchase the beer for home consumption. Overall, great experience. read more

Yum! Just got into Chicago, my first trip to Chicago! Staying at a nice Airbnb in Wicker Park, right around the corner. Crowded, but with a quick wait while enjoying a fantastic, though sorta pricy margarita! Chips and two dips and guacamole were amazing! Perfectly crispy chips and lovely dips and guac! Think I could eat them all day long! The two of us ordered four tacos and split them all. Pescado was wonderful, Zanahorias unique and good, Papas con Rajas yummy, and Chorizo Discada was also good. Sorry, but I love this place. This is my neighborhood go-to spot. I can always find a spot for one and almost never have an issue finding a spot for two at the bar. I feel like you only run into issues when you want a table here because the wait time is horrendous. Otherwise, you're gravy! If you're looking for a strong and great margarita, this is your spot. Pitchers run about $40 and you'll get about 5-6 glasses out of it. Their Micheladas are also so tart and kinda spicy, the way mama likes them. I don't think I've had a bad taco here either. Their verde salsa complements any taco. My favorite is their Walking Taco. It comes in a Fritos bag and is vegetarian. Add carne asada and it's a game changer! Speaking of carne asada, my second favorite taco here. Super packed with meat, again, how mama likes it. Chips and guac seem pricey but there's plenty to share or just eat yourself. I had heard such good things about this place but sadly it didn't live up to the hype. We got the al pastor, barbacoa, chicken, and chorizo tacos. While all were very generously stuffed with filling, they all lacked good flavor. They all just tasted like heavily salted meat. No spiciness or notes of different flavors. I tried adding the salsa verde and the red chili sauce, neither added any spice or depth of flavor. If I had to choose one to get again, it would the al pastor as it had the most flavor dimensions. I finally got to go to Big Star! Everyone know it's one of the places to be in Wicker Park! A true testament to that is it being featured in the most recent Time Out Chicago. Alfresco season is upon us in the city and this is one of the prime locations to dine. My friends and I waited 90 minutes for a table yesterday but the great thing is you don't have to hang around while you wait. We put our name down, drove off and did some shopping, then they called us when they were ready. We were seated in their outdoor area and it was the perfect weather for the venue...warm but with a bit of a breeze. We were very slow getting service and just throughout the meal attention to our table was pretty weak. That could definitely be improved upon here. We waited 30 minutes for our beers to come up. C'mon now. However, our server was nice and friendly. A big plus with Big Star is the prices! Tacos are $3 each (took 4 of them to fill me up!) and beers range in price from $1-$7ish? But you can order pitchers plus tons of other drinks. Being the cheap girl that I am, I went with the 7 oz $1 Schlitz beer. It hit the spot so well I got a second one. Great deal! On to the food! I tried my friend's hot dog and am sorry to say it wasn't very special. Drenched in toppings was it's main selling point but that didn't work for me. I tried the Tacos al Pastor (pork shoulder with pineapples, very good), the Tacos de Panza (pork belly taco, extremely tasty but the pork belly was overcooked making it a bit hard to eat, slightly disappointing) and TWO of the Tacos de Pescado (beer battered tilapia with chipotle mayo). The true winner was the Fish Taco! It is highly recommended! The chipotle mayo on it was amazing although it had my weak tastebuds on fire. It was seriously so good, I ended up ordering a second one. Nomnomz! I also liked their chips & guac. I don't usually like chips but I couldn't stop myself from eating more and more and more! What I wish for Big Star...live music! I can never get enough of this place and think of their tacos almost every day. The service is always great and the employees are very helpful. The restaurant itself is very sanitary and nicely decorated. They even have an outdoor sitting area which they open during warmer weather! My only complaint is that the tacos are a bit pricey ($3/4 per taco), which is why I don't come here as often as I would like. The tortillas are not too thick, but at the same time do their job of holding the ingredients together. I've tried three tacos so far all of, which I dare say, were perfect: Taco de Pescado: The fried fish was crispy and not soggy with grease. The cabbage added more texture to the taco while the chipotle mayo contributed to the flavor. The portion size was fairly decent for the $4 cost. Taco de Papas con Rajas: The potatoes were not greasy and seemed to be baked instead of fried (not sure about this). There was an ample amount of well seasoned potato which made up for any lacking in a meatless taco. The cotija and rajas chipotle bought the ingredients together and helped boost the taco's flavor. Decent serving size for $2.50. Taco de Yuba Guisado: This one was a bit interesting and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I normally hate tofu but it tasted amazing in this taco. I am not at all familiar with the other ingredients used, but it had a zesty, sweet taste to it and the tofu seemed sliced. The taco was piled up with the tofu filling so I'd say it's worth trying for $3. Definitely looking forward to coming back and trying something new! read more

Just not as good as I remembered. I came to Big Star a long time ago when they had lamb tacos. They were so good and I've always wanted to come back for more. One of my friends suggested we come here for lunch, and I was really excited to revisit those lamb tacos. Sadly, no lamb tacos. So I got the Taco de Panza (pork belly), Taco de Pescado (tilapia), and the Taco al Pastor (pork shoulder). The pork belly was described as crispy. Mine was not crispy. But I did like the overall flavor profile. The fish taco was bland. I feel neutral about it. The pork shoulder taco was probably my favorite. I like that they add pineapple since traditional al pastor tacos don't have pineapple. Guacamole. What is all the hype? This was truly the worst chips and guac I've ever had. The chips seemed stale. The guac was fizzy and limey like they put too much stuff to preserve it from turning brown. I'd honestly rather have slightly brown tasty guac that this nasty stuff. I just want fresh guac. Is that too much to ask for? I know you're always packed, but the quality of food should not suffer for it. We also ordered the horchata and the housemade limeade. Seemed watered down. In general I just wasn't impressed with the food or drinks here. I don't think I'd return except maybe if I was driving by and wanted tacos to go. Service: I didn't even recognize that our server was our server. At first I thought she was just a hippie who was trying to help out. All I really have to say is: Take your taco crave to Pilsen! To elaborate, four of us came for lunch on a Monday afternoon. Each person should have 3-4 tacos to be filling. We tried the taco de pollo (roasted chicken leg), taco de panza (braised pork belly), taco de papas con rajas (potatoes), taco de pescado (tilapia), and taco de chorizo verde (pork sausage). If I must choose a favorite from the batch, it would be the braised pork belly. The flavor was there but I was really disappointed with the texture. My local friends told me this was an awesome spot for tacos, but I have definitely had better. We waited about an hour and a half to get a table on a Friday night. The space is very loud. The waitress actually missed an order for one our drinks. We started out with some queso fundido, chips, and guacamole. The chips and guacamole were a decently sized portion and the guacamole was very good. The queso fundido came with a few tortillas. It was rich and cheesy, if not a bit salty. But we were here for tacos. I got an alambre, pescado (fish), chorizo, and pastor. It was annoying that all the tacos were served family style. We had to figure out which tacos were which and how to properly distribute them without making a mess. It would have been way easier if they just each of us our orders on separate plates. The tacos were also only single tortilla. This is the only place I've been to with somewhat authentic tacos that don't double up on tortillas. Condiments were apparent but napkins and silverware were missing and requested. Waiter took our order within minutes. I ordered: - tostada de hongos: stewed mushrooms, marinated greens and goat cheese was what I got. They forgot to put tomato and Serrano salsa and poblano pepper. No wonder this was bland. $4 -taco de pescado: battered tilapia with cabbage, red onion, lime, cilantro and chipotle mayo on top. This was decent. $4 - chips and salsa: hard chips and 2 kinds of salsa (chipotle and verde) I would say food is mediocre but the socializing area is up there. Cash only but don't worry. We got in right away, which was the only good thing. Even the guy that brought us to the table seemed to have an attitude. The waitress seemed like she could be pleasant. We ordered an appetizer, guacamole and chips and two margaritas and then ordered our dinners. The guacamole was less than a half of an avocado in a little cup, and it was still mostly the avocado not even blended and the chips were really hard and dry and pretty tasteless. For $12 it was awful. The drinks were really bland and served with no salt or anything else. $14 each? Horrible. We ordered five tacos, four of them showed up. I asked the waitress and she said I'll check on it and then went and waited on at least five different tables, and never once went into the kitchen until I called her out, and then, with a real attitude, she says, I'm waiting on other tables, then finally goes into the kitchen on her own time. and brings the ice cold taco that was there that had been waiting that she had missed. She knew it was her fault that it got so cold, and that she had missed it. And as a nice gesture she did comp us the 5 dollars for that one taco. Big star is where you go when you want to be basic and get some tacos + margs but it's in wicker park so you're not THAT basic (though they did open a location in Wrigley which has *more basic* vibes. Food and margs are standard. Mezcal margs for the win. Great for groups! read more

We got takeout for the big game and it was great! We got a bunch of tacos, a kids quesadilla, chips and guacamole, and the margarita kit with tequila. Everything was delicious and we especially enjoyed the margaritas during the game. It tasted super fresh and was probably our highlight of the meal. While we miss being able to eat out it was nice to bring Big Star home. read more
