Big Stuff makes some amazing food. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water! If only I didn't live so far away now... I discovered Big Stuff on a whim, after cycling near Cottage Grove we headed into town for dinner. We planned on eating at a nearby establishment, but when I got out of the car I smelled delicious, smoky BBQ and followed my nose straight to Big Stuff. The pulled pork is amazing, sooo smoky (not in a fake liquid smoke kind of way, they smoke their meats overnight). They'll mix the sauce in for you, or you can add it yourself. The sides are good, I've tried the green salad (a nice healthy addition to a heavier meal), beans, and cornbread (of course). Staff is super friendly. Big Stuff is the best! read more

Being a skeptic at heart, I was suspicious of the reviews for Big Stuff. I mean, when four local reviewers all give a place five-star reviews, I have to wonder if the owner and three of his/her best friends wrote the reviews. I can't say that isn't the case here, but it doesn't matter. All of the reviewers were absolutely right--Big Stuff serves up some fantastic Q! Both my lunch partner and I ordered the pork dinner plate and the meat was tender, moist and very tasty. I happen to prefer my Q with some sauce (everything about BBQ is a matter of personal taste) and the staff was happy to meet my needs. The servings were hefty and the price was very reasonable. The sides were also tasty. My favorites quickly became the fries (extra crispy without the phony flavoring so many places deem necessary these days) and the coleslaw with a tangy/slightly sweet sauce unlike anything I've ever tasted. The beans were also top notch, with a subtle, smoky BBQ flavor that was just about perfection. The potato salad, however, seemed to be a little heavy on the dill flavor--again, a matter of taste. The staff, too, fit the descriptions provided by previous reviewers. They were helpful and welcoming, which brings me to one of the two reasons I didn't give Big Stuff a five-star rating. I felt the woman behind the cash register was a little too friendly. Her chit-chat with customers slowed the serving line down quite a bit . . . and I was hungry! The second reason I lowered my rating to four stars was the chunk of gristle I found in my pork. Neither of these negative points are a big deal, but they prove there's almost always room for improvement. If you're in the Cottage Grove area and you want to get your Q on, head for Big Stuff. You won't be disappointed. (And that comes from a reviewer who lives nearly 500 miles away and has never even met the owners!) read more

Well, I made it back today when I was down in CG on business. I'm glad I tried it again. Maybe they did just have an off day the first time I went. The pork sandwich was *much* better today; juicy, smoky, and flavorful. Cooked just right - still just a tad of pink visible. The "spicy" BBQ sauce is a little tomato-centric and not particularly spicy. Fresh hot fries and salad (spring greens mix) still good. Actually, their fries are pretty freaking awesome now that I think about it. Saw them cutting up some chickens in the back room from Foster Farms - better quality ingredient than the average Sysco chopped chicken. Also, you might want to take a look over the counter at the meats before you order. They have them out under warming lamps so you can see exactly what you're getting. I looked too late but saw what looked like an excellent ham...next time. It's not superb BBQ (hence the 3-star rating) but after today I would say it's the best I've found in the area. The Eugene/Springfield options just flat out suck, like 1-star suck. I've heard some good things about Wagon Wheel out on 126, and want to give that a try too. I'll come back to Big Stuff if I'm around Cottage Grove at lunch/dinner time. $8 for a big platter with sides is a fair deal. read more

Real Texas BBQ in Cottage Grove. Never would have expected this but it's true. And no I'm not plugging the biz cause I'm related or friends of the staff, although I feel that way everytime I come in. Trust me this is true BBQ. They only smoke the meat. No boiling, no grilling, no shortcuts. I spend a lot of time in Austin and Houston enjoying what i consder some of the best BBQ in the US and in my opinion Big Stuff rates a solid 9 out of Texas 10. I have to agree with another reviewer, I have not tasted better BBQ in all of Willamette Valley - or all Oregon for that matter. Owner brothers Ira and Simon (yes, I'm a weekly customer) have no problem serving up special cuts on request and get this, will smoke just about anything you ask them to for a dollar a pound. I'm bringing in another Trader Joes brimmed turkeys for thanksgiving this year. Last years bird damn near started fights among family when going for seconds. I can't speak for the chicken, ham or sausages but if they are anything close to as tasty as the babybacks, beef ribs or brisket you're in for a treat. And did I mention that these are beef ribs that actually have meat on them. While drooling watching Simon cut up my ribs one day he told me the story of how it took him months of rejecting partial beef rib deliveries to finally get consistant beefy ribs. An exercise you'll appreciate should you try them. Although a 20 minute drive from Eugene you'll be well rewarded for the effort. read more

I had the pork sandwhich and I can say it was the most suculent I have had in a long time. It had a real good tangy sauce. You get a choice of two sides and I had baked beans and slaw. Holy moly, this place has the best barbeque in the Willamette valley! The spicy chicken was totally outrageous. I loved the cornbread muffin, and the green salad was made with real (i.e. not iceberg) lettuce. The baked beans were yummy as well. The service was fantastic - really nice, down-to-earth guys who greet you when you walk in, let you sample (!!!) the things you are interested in trying, and check in on you regularly while you chow down (and not in an annoying, in-your-face sort of way). Wow, another great Yelp find! Excellent place to stop while treking on I5 in Oregon. Excellent and simple BBQ sammies, with generous portions. I recently had a chance to meet up with a good friend of mine I had not seen in years, so when he said Cottage Grove I had my wife look up BBQ, and this is what we came up with. What luck! The food was excellent, and absolutely huge portions. My wife had the chicken, pulled pork and beef, and there was no way she could eat it all, not with the chicken being a large breast and wing. I had the beef, beef ribs, and spicy chicken. The spicy chicken was my least favorite, because it is off the bone and I question whether it was the chicken from the day before, and soaked in spicy liquid. It was good, just not great. What was great was the beef brisket. Juicy, tender, a beautiful smoke ring, smoky, and flavorful. Cornbread was excellent, so was the Mac n Cheese, and the sauces complimented the meats well. Very much worth the trip off the highway, and the staff was very friendly. I will definitely go back if ever in the area again. read more

I hope that this was just an odd night cause this really wasn't very good. Both of the meats were completely cold and my husband's ribs were tough and tasted like they were freezer burned. Rode my cycle down from Eugene because I heard this place had delicious bbq. And they certainly did! I had the beef rib dinner, and my girlfriend had the spicy chicken dinner. Both were superb. Yum Yum Yum! Detoured off i-5 on the way to Eugene during a road trip. We actually planned to stop here based on all the good yelp reviews. Glad we stopped! Big Stuff is not only smokey, delicious BBQ but Cottage Grove is such a cute little town. I told my husband that I want to move there! :-) Since Big Stuff is located on Main Street there are tons of shops close by. Parking is minimal out front-we had a trailer with us so we couldn't fit right there on Main Street. We easily found parking around the corner though. As we walked from our car we could smell BBQ! They have a whole smoke station set up outside! The food was hearty and delicious. We both got baby back ribs with the sweet BBQ-nothing like that sweet goopy Masterpiece stuff. You could tell it was homemade. A little more runny than the store stuff, tangy, sweet and spicy! Fries were cooked fresh. They were hot a delicious. Colesalw was awesome, potato salad was good too. The portions are perfect neither of us were too full but we didn't leave hungry either! If you're driving through OR I would reccomend stopping here. The home cookin' and the friendly employees will refresh you for the long drive ahead! 2 meals and 2 drinks for $27.00 not bad. Oh, and I should metnion the place is HUGE. This place is awesome. The brisket is amazing, tender and lots of flavor. The bbq sauce is served on side, but I can eat the brisket without the bbq sauce-the brisket is that good! The chicken has just the right amount of flavor and is not at all dry. I had baked beans and fries for sides and they were very good. The ranch dressing is homemade, along with other things. No shortcuts, portions are very good. The owner showed us the smoker and explained the time and effort put into the food. Its obvious they put a lot of care into their food. This is a great little local BBQ joint here in Cottage Grove. We have eaten here many times and they have a good following in our small town. Around the holidays I was turned on to the fact they smoke turkey's and hams for customers. I brought in my turkey, paid the price per lb and got a call the next day to pick it up. It was the MOST AMAZING turkey I have ever had. I wish I had known this sooner. We even received a pint of smoked gravy that I could have put a straw in and drank it was so tasty. The only reason for four stars is that shortly after Christmas they closed for repair for a week that ended up turning into six weeks and it was incredibly confusing seeing posts that they would be open on a specific day only to see another post after that day they would be closed longer. Aside from that confusion their food is delicious, portions are generous and the staff is always friendly. The building they are in is historic and a really cool piece of history not to mention it smells great! read more

Came here for dinner. My husband grew up in Missouri on KC style BBQ. Not quite as good as KC BBQ, but still great BBQ. I had the spicy chicken dinner with baked beans and coleslaw. The chicken had good heat to it. Both sides were great. My husband had the two meat plate with Mac and cheese and potato salad. The potato salad had olives in it (neither of us like olives) but had good flavor. The Mac and cheese was also good. Quick service. Large portions. We will be back! read more

This was so tasty and delightful that I cannot imagine not returning each and every time I drive down I-5! I had the spicy chicken plate which in addition to being absolutely delicious was also very reasonably priced. I admire any restaurant that makes chicken taste delightful without drowning it in sauce. It was most, tasty, a nice mix with some crispy pieces, and a perfect level of spice. It came with two sides and cornbread - I chose green salad and macaroni & cheese. All was delicious. Hubby tried the pork sandwich plate, he had coleslaw and macaroni salad for his sides. Yelp's 4* reviews were right on for me at this restaurant. Both the cashier and barbeque carver/server were friendly, efficient and helpful communicators of the fare at this barbeque. Lots of choices; ham, pulled pork, chicken, brisket, hot link sausages, and sides. First timers get to sample each of the meats, along with two types of sauce; one sweeter, and the other hotter and less sweet. We both had a plate of brisket, sausages, spicy barbeque sauce, cold slaw, corn muffin and baked beans. Everything was good. You won't go wrong here. Didn't get 5 stars because the cashier asked if I wanted cornbread. What I got was a sweet corn muffin, with almost cake like consistency. I was expecting a more granular texture as in a good piece of southern cornbreak baked in a hot cast iron skilet, and without all the sugar. It's probably a personal preference about cornbread, and I should have asked to sample it. I'm sure they would have gladly offered me a sample. These are great folks with good food. read more

Pretty good, but not great. I'd give 3.5 stars if you could give 1/2 stars. The server was really sweet and offered us samples of ham, beef and pork to help us decide on what to order. I ordered the small plate of ribs (it was HUGE... the large plate must be insane! ) with fries and coleslaw and my boyfriend ordered the 2 item combo with beef and ham and the green salad and fries for sides. For portion size, this place gets 5 stars. We're both big eaters, but couldn't finish our meals. For taste, a 3. While the ribs were gigantic and very meaty, they were overcooked. Most of the rib was inedible because of it. The parts that weren't overcooked, were amazing. My boyfriend said his was "good" but not great. All of the sides were great, and their spicy bbq sauce was really good. I was SUPER disapointed that they were out of my bbq restaurant favorite...hot links! Boo!!! The cook sliced a one and a half inch slab of well-marbled brisket and chopped it to pieces. A good serving though I'm used to several thin slices. This ain't the way we serve it in Texas. Small rib plate $ 9.50 - three beef ribs (small though), green salad and bar-b-q beans. Sides are tasty although nothing exceptional. Excellent draft beers - Widmer $ 3.75 / pint. Large selection of other meats - pork, ham, pork spare ribs (baby back and regular) and sausage. Sandwiches, seniors' and kids menus. Don't see what the fuss is about. read more

I've been coming here a good handful of times a year since they opened 10+ years ago and I apologize for not writing a review earlier. Great food, great atmosphere, friendly and casual. The baked beans are amazing, the specials are always good and prices are very reasonable. Delicious chicken, pork and beef and get the turkey if you can. Very nice setup for moving the line along and spacious seating. Like any BBQ place they have their own twist on certain things and I appreciate the unique flavors and offerings here. My recommendation is to order a pulled pork (or chicken) sandwich with either sauce, with baked beans and Cole slaw. Add the sauce, baked beans and slaw to the sandwich and enjoy. Take a chicken home. The skin is cooked to perfection, we've used the remains of their chicken for making chicken broth and it turned out better than any other broth I've made. There's plenty of other places to eat in cottage grove but this is easily my first pick. Thank you Big Stuff! read more

I am not a fan of this place. All of the sides pretty much suck, especially the potato salad and mac and cheese. The salad is totally bland..and the mac has a really weird consistency and was served lukewarm, doesnt even taste cheesy. The brisket was given to me completely shredded into tiny pieces when I ordered a brisket plate. I have never had meat served to me like that, Im from Texas and I know true barbecue and that was just weird. I took it back to the cook and asked if I could have strips of brisket cut because I dont like it shredded..He was extremely rude to me and was complaining about the other customers and being busy, saying his knife wasnt working properly and it was falling apart. If he knew how to properly cut brisket it wouldnt fall apart. But he was also chopping it up smaller after it falls off..He said he would have to make a new brisket because the one he had was almost out (there was about 1/4 a chub left) and so I said okay how long will that take and he gave me even more attitude. I then just asked him for a refund and walked to the end of the line. He then proceeded to yell at me "miss miss" for whatever reason and so I go back to him like yeah? And he wanted me to give him the plate..So i gave it to him and sat down and I got my refund. My husband had the small rib plate, barely any meat on the ribs, huge sides to make up for 3 small meatless ribs, but the sides sucked...not worth the money at ALL! Worst Service Ever, Worst Barbecue Ever. Never going back, I will not give companies my business that treat me like shit. When a customer doesnt like something especially when done incorrectly you should never give any attitude! It is so crazy to me how the customer service industry up here is SO rude! The BBQ was good, and the portion of ribs for $15 was HUGE! The sides however were not great. We had the fries, Mac and Cheese, Salad, and a roll (they were out of cornbread). The fries were definitely the best side but the other 3 were all mediocre. That said the meat/BBQ portion of the mean was really good. Two of the guys working there were really nice, but seemed to not be doing a lot. One guy stood there while the girl working the cash register had to take orders, prepare all the sides, get drinks, ring people up, etc. It took a really long time to order because she had to do so much stuff by herself so it was weird one of the guys working was just standing there. Also, they closed at 8pm on a Saturday night right after the car show on main street ended. And we were definitely prompted to box up our meal and go once it hit 8pm. Overall, the food and the place wasn't too bad but the sides, and the waitstaff could use improvement. read more
