I have been taking my 2.5 year old golden retriever, Pippin, to Big Valley Pet Resort since he was 5 or 6 months old. I had a golden retriever before him, and I have never had as amazing an experience at a dog daycare, boarding, grooming, etc place as Big Valley. It is evident the staff absolutely love animals and put such care and dedication into ensuring every dog, cat, etc is not only safe, but having the bestest of times. I'm moving to the Boston area, and one of things that makes it hardest to leave Poulsbo is that Pippin is parting ways with one of his favorite places in the world. I'll forever and ever be grateful for everyone at Big Valley. I broke my leg a few summers ago and they were SO accommodating for me and Pippin, it melted my heart. Keri, Winter, Emma, Tapanga, Dayna, Nicole, Emily, Sarah, Hailey, Ava, Grace, Cal, Dylan, Megan, Keeley, Gideon, Meadow, and anyone else I missed - thank you all SO MUCH for being the best extended family for Pippin. You'll forever be part of Pippin's pack, along with all of his other furry buddies there. We love y'all, and honestly I'd recommend Big Valley Pet Resort over any other place I've been (even non pet related). After we boarded our dogs here for 20 years, they suddenly required a meet and greet after our dog had already boarded there. The meet and greet is a real hassle. First you have to bring your dog in for a daytime stay, then you have to come back for an overnight stay. And the meet and greet is good for only one year, so you have to come back and do it all over again for the same dog, which is absurd. read more

Our dog Bailey, a German Shephard with a little husky mix, visits for day care and overnight when were on vacation. She stays about 7+ nights. Bailey loves the opportunity to play with other dogs. My husband and I like that Bailey is well cared for by people that truly love dogs and have our dog's best interest in mind. We highly recommend checking out this kennel! read more

We used this business for a decade, boarded our dogs about a dozen times, but no longer. Service was good except for the last time. They forgot to cut one of the dog's nails, did a rush job and sent me home with a bloody truck. Not a huge deal, rinse and forget. But the deal breaker was their policy of re-vetting animals. Trying to book a couple days four weeks out is not possible for us, because they "don't remember" our lab and need to re-introduce him. Except that can't happen for six weeks, so too bad. What a rotten way to treat loyal customers. Yet another local business that's just gotten too big for its britches and thrown aside customer service, cause they don't have to. Sad. read more

It's taken a few months of sitting on this review deciding if I wanted to share my experience, but I feel it is necessary. We own three bulldogs (bulldogs are fragile, not a hardy breed). We took two of our younger bulldogs to board for a few nights. Had a wonderful check in and promise to have regular text updates. This all happened and we were satisfied. They lost our food and dog blankets we brought, but it was replaceable, moving on. The next visit we brought all 3 bulldogs and my daughter separately boarded her two Shepards. We again were promised text updates. This time no communication even when I sent a text asking about them. Our older bulldog had never been to a kennel so I was worried. Finally I got through via phone and was told they were fine. 5 days later we go to pick them up. My older bulldog comes out so incredibly sick. She has a high temperature and mucus coming out of her nose. She is lethargic as we put her in the car. I was hysterical, she looked bad. We got her to the vet who confirmed she had picked up a respiratory infection from the kennel. So I called the kennel and let them know that I was disappointed that nobody noticed how sick she was and gave them the info on the virus so they could clean the kennels. Never got a return call to check on how she was doing, nothing. That was concerning but here comes the part that I can't let go. My daughter picks up her dogs and the lady said "We had to give one of your dogs Ace to calm him down last night." She told my daughter that Ace is no big deal and they use it as needed. Well my daughter has horses and knows that Ace is a prescription veterinary medication. It's very strong. Nobody called to ask her if it was ok to medicate her dog. The kennel staff were nonchalant and did not apologize when my daughter got upset. She was horrified that her 1 yr old pup was sedated without her permission. Unfortunately we will never use this kennel again. read more

This place does not want to deal with huskies. I understand that huskies are kind of a unique dog breed and that there are some challenges that come with dealing with huskies everyday that are simply not applied to other dog breeds, but if you guys are running a pet resort then you all need to know how to manage and take care of every kind of dog breed. They told us through email that our dog got snippy, was irritable, and just a nightmare for their handlers to deal with awhile into his stay and then we pick him up and they tell us in person that they loved him and he was friendly and when we pick them up, he's just loving on them and they're loving him and they just tell us they he gets anxious in his area sometimes and my only thought is: don't all dogs get anxious in their little spaces sometimes? All they kept telling us though was that huskies could be difficult and that they weren't sure that they know how to handle that. We told them when we dropped Regalia off, two different things that we hoped would influence how they managed him during his stay: 1) He is an only child. We did not raise him around other dogs, nor will he ever be around other dogs in our household because we can only afford one dog. They told us when we picks him up that he was having problems playing with other dogs. Why was our dog that we told you guys was an only child, outside playing with other dogs? They even told us that they remembered us saying that to someone, if I recall correctly, named Terry? I can't remember the name, but they remembered us telling them that. If our dog was unmanageable around other dogs or he became possessive with his toys, I believe the exact wording that they used was that our husky seemed "confused" about how to play. Why couldn't he just have been given a safe place to play by himself in that instance? Why continue to let something be an issue until you have no choice but to ban him from the pet resort? We also told them that they could put a muzzle on him or something if they felt unsafe grooming him and they said that they would keep that in mind when I originally set this reservation up over the phone and then they tell us over email, the day before we get back from our trip that they wouldn't be able to from him because he was so unpredictable. Which is fine, if you don't want to do it, but we gave them a potential solution to that problem well un advance and now, the day after we come back from an international trip to pick up our dog that we hope is okay and clean and happy; now we have to scramble to get our own grooming appointment set up and pay out of pocket for an issue that we wish we knew they were having at least a little bit earlier because our dog is now filthy after coming back film this resort and now we have to figure out what to do on our own. Because they don't trust huskies, they think they are, in their own words "unique" and because if that our husky can no longer stay with them. They also told us that he was too energetic for them to deal with. He's a husky. Huskies are energetic. Everyone who has ever had or dealt with a husky knows to expect an inexhaustible battery from them. Why would this place accept such an energetic dog breed for lodging and then tell us that he is too energetic for them to deal with? He's stated here before and that wasn't a problem that they brought up the last time he was there, why is a husky being energetic an issue now? They even mentions to us that his energy level was just another "unique" thing about huskies and that they just weren't well equipped for that so, again, husky owners beware. We are very disappointed with how everything turned out. This place was perfect for us in every way. Very close by, convenient to get to and bring all of its dog's stuff to for his stay and he gets to stay somewhere close by home so it's perfect for him too. We now have to find other, more inconvenient lodging much further away from us and take our dog to a place that he is unfamiliar with, full of people they he doesn't know, and become anxious in his kennel area there as well because he is no longer welcome back to a place that he's stated at before that we are hoping he could try to get used to over time. Hopefully the handlers at the next facility know how to appropriately deal with anxious, energetic huskies, because this location certainly does not. read more

Staff is extremely friendly and our dogs are always excited to go in. Their prices are reasonable and we have never had an issue with availability when we plan ahead... especially on holidays. We are very comfortable leaving our dogs knowing they are in good hands between the staff and veterinarian located adjacent on the same lot! My wife and I shopped around a lot and we are very pleased we found Big Valley. Would highly recommend! read more

We love Big Valley! When we were first shopping around for a place for our dog to stay while we were on vacation, Big Valley was the most welcoming and accommodating out of all the businesses that we called in the area. They showed us around their facility and answered all of the important questions that an overbearing dog mom (yes I called myself that) like myself, has. They know our doggie's name and they are excited to see him every single time and somehow they've managed to make him "great!" at getting baths (at home and at another groomer it's been a struggle). After using them for about a year for grooming, daycare and pet boarding, we are happy to have found a home away from home for our dog. read more

I just wanted to give a shout out to the wonderful team at BVPR. They are always super excited to see our pup when he comes to play. The team is always chipper, and they do a wonderful job of grooming as well. Our boy always comes home clean, and exhausted from his day of play. We've been using them for about a year now, and have nothing but wonderful experiences. I absolutely loved this place. We were getting our two doxies groomed here since we moved in October 2019. The first couple times we went were great and the groomers did great, throughout the last two years every other time we went they didn't do their nails or something small but not enough for us to not go back. This last time we went, we said that we wanted what they had last time ( which was a haircut and bath ) because that groom was perfect and they said okay. We picked them up almost 4-5 hours later (they told us they would be that long and that was fine) and they didn't cut their hair other than just their back legs and their feet were trimmed and they had a bath for the same price that we usually paid for a full haircut. I called and talked to them and all they said was that their prices went up and that we paid $50 per dachshund to just get a bath and clean up their feet. I then saw a Facebook post one to two months later that they were raising their prices starting in January and they were last groomed in November or December, I'm not entirely sure. I love the people here but probably won't go back for grooming unfortunately. read more

We have 2 big dogs and they and their owners love Big Valley's services and staff. With allot of experience with kennels throughout the country, Big Valley stands out. We have kenneled our pups at Big Valley at least 40 nights worth, with another 26 nights of stays booked in the future. For us, it is worth the 20 minute drive to use their services. You really get a sense of the caring the moment you walk in the door. The staff is very attentive and recalls each pet's personalities, habits and preferences (and the quirks of their owners, too!). Staff retention seems good, with familiar faces every visit. The dogs seem at ease and are more than willing to leave us behind for their stay. We also appreciate there is Vet care -if needed- on the same premises. This is very valuable if you have lapsed in your pets vaccinations, etc. It also gives you an additional piece of mind when leaving your pets behind. Different size kennels, joint kennels, play times and bathing options are available. read more

I had my Havanese Maggie groomed today by Wendy. When I got her home I noticed she had a chunk of hair missing from her front lip. Not a pretty look for my girl. I took pictures. I drove back to inquire about it. Was first told she had moved while being cut. I said I should have been made aware of that when I picked her up. Then I was told she had a mat inside of her mouth and was chewing on it. WHAT???? There was no apology or any offer to try to make it right. My dog LOVES it there. He is a Boxer/Mastiff mix and VERY energetic. As soon as we get in the parking lot he is jumping and whining to get out, then pretty much drags me to the door. The staff is very through in asking me exactly what my dog needs and what I would like. He stayed for 1 week and even though he could not go out to play with others, being an unaltered male, they made sure he got good time outside. I find the services are well worth the price, seeing how most places in the area will not even let my dog out of his kennel. As for the groomer, she did a wonderful job. He has a short coat which isn't hard but I also had him dyed, which came out awesome. I currently use this facilities often and feel perfectly confident leaving my big guy with them. Well, we have taken our dog here a number of times and we have never had a problem. He has stayed at other places in Kitsap County and had issues with billing at others but never at this establishment. They treat my dog as if he was part of their family. Another reason I favor this place over others is that they charge by the night and you aren't rushed to pick up your dog/cat by noon or be charged another night. Drop them off and pick them up between open and close, that's it. Also the dog's playtime outside is an hour and 1/2. That's a lot better than 20 min. Again, our dog has been here about 3-4 times over the past 4 years, also being groomed here too and been happy customers. I would recommend this place to any of my friends and family. *just a note re: prior post, if there way a problem with the bill, it should have been pointed out the first visit and been resolved. read more

I've been to multiple other Boarding facilities in the Kitsap area, and a ton of other vets. Nothing compares to Big Valley Pet Resort and Veterinary Clinic. Dr Cable, at the vet clinic has been in business a very long time, for a reason. He is compassionate, considerate, and a GOOD vet who knows his stuff, and always puts the animals health and safety as top priority. The Pet Resort is the only place in Kitsap Co which allows the boarding dogs to play and socialize with other healthy, happy dogs. They're not stuck in the kennels alone all day like at other boarding places. For the most part the staff has been at Big Valley for a very long time. There are always faces I know, and they always recognize my dogs. The grooming at the pet resort rocks. They have experienced quality groomers. I have ...high maintenance... dogs. They're not always social, they can be wild crazy and loud- but the staff at Big Valley loves them, and takes super care of them. They also take exotic pets- I've seen birds, lizards and bunnies in the lobby! read more

I will not be returning to this business. If you elect to - take careful notes of the prices and services you agree to when you make your reservation and check your bill CAREFULLY before you allow them to charge anything to your credit card when you're picking up your dog/cat/etc. I've used this service three times and each time I've been here - the bill I receive when I pick up my dog does NOT match the quote or services discussed when the reservation is made. Three times is not a mistake in my book - it's a pattern of conducting business that is, in my opinion, less than ethical. If they don't conduct business in an ethical manner - I will not trust them to take care of my dog when I'm away. I'll be using another kennel in the future. I recommend you use someone else too. read more

We picked up our Husky after a stay here of nearly two weeks--I am working out of state, and my husband departed on a business trip that ended up being extended while he was away for much longer than he had anticipated. We signed up for her to receive daily outings, etc. so she would not be constantly confined to a kennel. But when we picked her up, we found an extra $100 charge added to our bill--she had chewed a hole in the wall of her kennel, they said. I was distraught. This is a dog who does NOT chew on things. We regularly leave her home alone when we go out, confident that the most she'll do is sneak onto the couch and leave dog hair all over it. This suggests to me she was being left for extended periods of time, neglected, in her kennel and was truly desperate to get out. The manager admitted she might have been stressed out, but this was not their fault. She told me the contract I signed when I left her promised to pay for any damage done by my dog. My main concern is the fact that my dog was so miserable staying at their facility that she would chew a hole in a wall to get out. The $100 extra charge was basically adding insult to injury. read more

We just returned from our vacation and picked up our dog, a large Labrador Retriever. We had him bathed and his nails clipped. When we picked him up, he was very happy and in good health. He seemed to have really enjoyed his play time. The people there seem caring and knew our dog by name. The charges were just as advertised and I can't comment on the other review that had trouble. I wrote a rave review about a year ago, and we've used Big Valley about a dozen times in the year we've lived here. However, I have to say our last trip left me extremely disappointed:( Our dog came down with kennel cough a few days after we picked her up, and I know of at least one other dog who was there at the same time and was also sick. I would have greatly appreciated a heads up that a sick dog was boarded, or at least a call back from someone in authority after I called informing them of my dog's kennel cough. I could not be more disappointed in their lack of transparency and responsibility for a pretty serious incident. (Our dog was fine- we got her on antibiotics within the first 12 hours of coughing, but if they had told us, we could have started her on meds even sooner). read more

I should give two reviews for my experiences. Dr Cable is truly a nice guy (4.5 stars) and does care about your pet, although you do tend to walk out after your appointment with a lot of holistic powders and pills that didn't seem to do anything for my pets (that I could see), but did inflate the bill quite a bit. But, if you want honesty and integrity from your Veterinarian, he's your guy. The bad part: Big Valley also offers a boarding facility that we had used once before with satisfactory results. But last fall, we left our two dogs for a week while we went on a road trip. I left enough of their food so that, if metered to them as I instructed, should have lasted for the week - with one extra day's worth added just in case. When we returned, the dogs were ecstatic to see us of course, and we went back in the kennel to retrieve the sleeping pad we had left for them. It was soaking wet and the explanation was: "sorry, I guess when we hosed out the kennel, we forgot to pick it up!" I signed the documents that were handed to me stating that they were in good condition without lifting the dogs up to check them. Bad mistake!. Then she handed me the leftover food (a lot - should have been nearly empty) & when we got home we counted the food that was left and the two dogs had apparently shared 1 package a day - they were instructed to feed them each (each!) 1.5 pkgs twice per day. They each had half a pkg total for the day. When we weighed them at home they had each lost about 3 to 3.5 lbs. When we dropped them off, they each weighed 10 lbs. They were both ravenous and ate well that night, but wouldn't leave the side of our bed. The next day, the older of the two started shaking very badly and wouldn't eat. We monitored him all day and he would take a little food from our hands. That night, we were able to get him to eat a little more and planned to take him to the vet the next day, but the next day, as we were putting him in the car, he died. I certainly don't blame Dr Cable, but I do blame the staff at the boarding facility. If you do use them for boarding, please check your pets before signing anything. Better training and care is needed over there (separate building from Dr Cable). Sorry it took so long to post this. I don't normally post derogatory comments about any business (I just don't go back to them), but in this case, I have been urged by friends and family to do so. People should be made aware. read more

This is truly the only place to take a furry family member when you need pet care. It is not inexpensive, but it is also not nearly as expensive as many places in King County. Our first dog LOVED to visit and each handler knew her immediately upon seeing her - to some people all labs look alike.... When our lab died, everyone at the kennel sent their condolences. Our new dog was clearly loved, exercised and well fed when he stayed at Big Valley. We got a full report about his "personality" and they were spot-on. They "get" dogs and their needs and sometimes funny traits. The same handlers are consistently there each visit. (No turnover means it is probably a good place to work, too!) We have used this service for 10 years and never plan to change. read more

I chose this veterinary clinic to care for my senior rescue lab after I took her in. She had bad ear infections which they claimed they could cure with a laser. After 2 expensive sessions, she was no better. They then tried a few other topical treatments that were worthless. I eventually cured this with a reviewed over-the-counter ear wash that worked great called 'Vets Best'. She was also becoming lethargic, had a poor appetite and looked depressed. They diagnosed her with Cushing's, mainly from her distended belly and put her on an expensive supplement. She next came down with a nasty case of fleas shorty after this visit, which I'm positive came from this clinic. She was never around any other animals or areas of exposure, and none of my other dogs ever had this problem. She then developed a horrible whooping cough, followed by regular regurgitation of copious amounts of clear mucous. I had Big Valley examine her, they took her temp, listened to her heart and lungs and told me: "She's not sick! Just take her home, and if the cough isn't better in a few weeks, bring her back." I knew something was very wrong with her, so I immediately took her to another vet clinic. Within 15 minutes they had found she was suffering from heart failure with an enlarged heart, and atrial fibrillation with a heart rate of over 300 bpm! "It sounds like there's a tennis ball banging around in her chest! Get her to the emergency vet clinic immediately!" The emergency vets said she would not have lasted for 'a couple of weeks' and would have likely died well before that. They also said she did not have Cushing's and that her distended belly was from a massive amount of fluid build-up caused by the heart failure that had likely been on-going for some months prior! After a lot of test, meds and QUALITY veterinary care, she's now on the mend and doing pretty well. In my opinion, this clinic is a conscientious pet owners worst nightmare! They badly miss-diagnosed my dogs medical problems through gross negligence, and may well have been responsible for her death had I not acted quickly with a second opinion. Because of these experiences, I would very much recommend you stay well away from this business, if you care at all about your pet! read more

Dr. Cable is just the best vet we've ever been to; smart, compassionate, and a sense of humor! We so appreciate his real world advice about our two dogs. The dogs have no anxiety going into his beautiful clinic, as they often did at other vets we have taken them to over the years. He has always had great advice for helping us through whatever trouble they get themselves into. Finally we love the connected pet lodge and that we can schedule routine clinic visits and grooming to occur while they are staying at the lodge. read more

I have been taking my Purebred Standard Poodle to Big Valley for occasional boarding and daycare for over 4 years. I have NEVER had any problems with the billing or care received. I also have been having my dog groomed there every 2 weeks for the same period of time. He is always groomed impeccably and I get many many comments on how good he always looks from friends and from strangers on my daily walks around downtown Poulsbo. The staff is extremely friendly to both me and my dog. And, the best part, my dog absolutely LOVES going there. When we get out of my car, he pulls me all the way to the front door and then jumps up in the air when he gets there. The employees always come out from behind the reception desk to greet my dog and pet him. I would highly recommend Big Valley to anyone who wants good service (both boarding and grooming) and a place that both you and your dog love! read more

Dr. Cable is one of the worst vets I have been to. Everyone I talk to will tell you the same thing. I got my beagle fixed by him and three months later she still has something under her skin. Now I have to take her to a different vet to get sutures out. He also talk to me like I had no idea how to take care of a dog, when I have had them my whole life. Don't go!! read more

I will not board my dog's at Big Valley Resort again , they are crowded and the kennels are not like they are pictured in on the web site. If you want a dog pound atmosphere for your dog's this is the place for you. they over book the kennel its loud and smelly in the kennel area , my dogs leave smelling horrible. We had to bath them when we got them home . My dogs were stressed out. They keep them kenneled most of the time with a few out door breaks. Also they dont accommodate for any early drop off . They charge for late pickup tho..I would not recommend this kennel for boarding. read more

I have been taking Sophie, my springer spaniel here for nine years. Over that time, I still see familiar faces, although some change. The newer members of the staff seem as concerned and happy to be there, as the "old timers." Sophie runs to the door leading to the kennels when I bring her in -- so much for missing me. Sophie has lots of allergies, requires medication, can't get too dirty, needs to be hosed off after play time, has special food. A regular pain! They are so nice to her, they give her meds and playtime (which I pay for, but which keeps her happy and safe.) Boarding your dog is expensive -- especially if the people take good care of your pet and give them individual attention. I have always been completely briefed on the cost of our stay in advance. We now have a new springer name Annie (1 yr) and she is a little skittish about going, but is always happy when we pick her up. Both our puppies are known by name, and very well taken care of. Finally, we had them both scheduled for a five day stay after Christmas and over new years. We had to cancel because my whole family came down with the flu. No problem, we were only charged for the night they were there. I am not a shill -- this place is GREAT! read more

The funniest part of the description is "Individualized care in a bright, clean, safe environment". We boarded two dogs and two cats for 10 days with them and our dogs were given back to us COVERED in urine and feces. The urine was a couple days old as their fur was covered in a couple layers of semi-dry sticky (at this point) urine. It took our groomer (who was absolutely shocked at the state of my pets when we took them there straight from this place) three baths in order to get the smell and stains out of my dog's fur. When I confronted them they said that they did not know why and that multiple procedures were not followed. They could not give me any reasons for anything that was done. If I kept my dogs like this in my house, I would get the ASPCA knocking on my door taking them away. The only thing they would do is give us a "2 days free on your next stay". Highly irrelevant as I will NEVER take my pets there again, and I suggest you do not also. As a previous reviewer on a different site mentioned my German Shepard not only RAN out of the door but wanted nothing to do with the employees, not only that but was whining like crazy (something she NEVER does). I feel very bad having left them with these incompetent people. Also as someone else mentioned no bed at all. The "stall cleaner 'James'" seems like he hates his job and was very standoff-ish to us (most likely because they did not do what they were supposed to and we called them on it). Really bad vibes from him. Dr. Cable seems like a great guy and most likely a good vet but the manager says that he never walks through the boarding facility....maybe if he did, he'd have a new manager. The Manager also said that he was in a surgery when we asked to speak with him (in the different vet part of the facility) but when we walked into that office anyway he met with us almost immediately. read more
