What a great shop!! The mechanics on hand on a Monday night were very helpful, not condescending at all to one who had never built a bike from scratch before. But in about 3.5hours to my surprise, it was practically finished, except for brakes, and seat. But these were a no brainer to complete at home. I've taken them all here several times for everything from simple to complex repairs. I've learned a lot. The volunteers here are always excellent. Walked in not knowing how to do ANYTHING with my bike. In an hour I learned how to and installed a new tube, seat, stem, handlebars and grip tape... these guys are friendly helpful and know what there doing. This is my first Yelp review! Picked up an 80s era road bike on Craigslist recently. Went to Bikerowave today and spent a little time patching the tube on fix a flat, greasing chains, setting the seat and talking about what other work the bike might need down the road. Embarassed at how little this cost me! I had gone into another local shop and they wanted $25 for a new tire and $10 to install it! These guys taught me how to patch the tube and keep the tire and charged a less than 1/4 of that. Thank you Bikerowave! read more

Went to Bikerowave for the first time today and this place is awesome! I know NOTHING about bike maintenance and have been putting off tuning my bike because I didn't want to spend a ton of money, and really wanted to figure it out on my own. Luckily though, I didn't have to. It was busy but I was immediately able to get my bike on a rack and get assistance.Tom helped me fix things up. Checked my brakes. Showed me how to oil my chain and I grabbed a couple of screws as well. Took barely any time and cost me under $5! I can't believe what a steal this was! And walking away feeling like I accomplished something was amazing! Definitely recommend. read more

This was my first time to any bike repair place, so I was a little intimidated. This place is great! They have bins full of bike parts that are inexpensive (most of their parts are donated) and a whole selection of tools and oils. You just put the bike on a stand and do whatever you want to it. My bike needed cleaning, re-oiling, brake pad repair and a wheel straightened. I kept mentioning this was my first visit, and they taught me everything. This is a DIY bike repair shop, but you should be able to handle most tasks unless it's super intensive. I was there around two hours because I was thorough and didn't want to rush. My bike is nearly as good as new. And it cost $14! Other bike places were charging $75 - $100 for the same services. Plus, I now know how to do my own repairs now. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND! read more

This place is great if you know what your doing, but if you don't know that much about fixing bikes there's a great volunteer who does. He can be found in the shop on weekends, running around, helping pretty much everyone, he goes by the name J.J. and his the best. When I was in there, he spent an hour with my bike trying to fix it, the volunteer that I was to talking before J.J. came around, was trying to send me to another bike shop, because he didn't know where the tool was, that would fix my bike. They'll help you every step of the way, if you need it, and will know exactly which part to use. They have new and used parts to buy. I have been shopping for a bike on the westside for a few weeks and walked into this bike shop and from the second I walked in was greeted with the friendless most helpful employee. David wasn't pushy and asked all the right questions and was so helpful. Three days later met me to check out a bike he custom tailored to meet my needs. I know, everyone loves them. But I have to be the dissenting voice. I've been there twice, and had a terrible experience both times. The first time I just got a patch kit, and they had just opened a few months earlier, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. After building my bike at Bike Kitchen, I was excited to have a west side alternative. Unfortunately, when I got my patch kit home, I opened it to find that it already had one patch used! I know. They run a volunteer only service, and probably thought nothing of it when someone returned it. Or someone grabbed it to do a patch, and accidentally put it back into the stack for selling. But still. Not enough to call back or haggle over, but a disappointing first experience. Of course, they are really there for the service they provide, of helping you actually fix your bike, rather than just selling odds and ends and parts, so I held off on passing judgment, and went back a second time. A little while ago, my pedal crank nut fell off, and, though I thought I heard something, I didn't see anything missing, so continued on. It was mostly downhill, so I didn't notice until I got home, and never returned to retrieve the nut. I'm still kicking myself for that. In any case, I thought I'd give Bikerowave another shot, and brought my bike to them. I called them beforehand, to make sure they had nuts, since I know they won't always have everything in stock. After a bit of rifling and they confirmed they actually had a nut at least roughly in the size I needed. Great! So I headed over, and said I was the one on the phone, and asked about the nut. One of the girls said yes, she knew what I was talking about - but then couldn't find the nuts. We then spent about 7 or 8 minutes looking for them. So, nuts found, I try to put it on. I've never put on a pedal crank nut before, so I first grabbed a c-wrench, which didn't really work. Then I thought, well, maybe a ratchet would work, so I asked for one. AND NO ONE THERE KNEW WHAT A RATCHET WRENCH WAS! Again, I know it's volunteers, but seriously? I'm not asking that the average person know what a ratchet wrench is, but if you work in a bike place, shouldn't at least one person know the names of tools? In any case, the ratchet head was too big, and I didn't really get my nut on properly (hur hur), and just had to work with the c-wrench. All in all, I was there for about 15 minutes (including the search for nuts and wrenches), and still had a loose pedal crank, since no one there could help me actually get it on properly. I know from my time at Bike Kitchen that the whole operation is not ever going to be super efficient, but it was still a little disappointing that I didn't have a working pedal. And then I go to pay, and one of the girls there tells me she's charging me for 30 minutes, and the price. Wait, what?! I was there 15 minutes, tops. I wasn't gonna haggle with her, since it's only maybe $2 more or something, and it goes to a good cause, but it still left a bitter taste in my mouth - especially since I could have brought it to a regular bike shop and had the thing fixed for about $2 total, with a lot less hassle. The only reason I didn't give them only one star is because I think they have potential. I haven't been to their new place (yeh, ok, this is an old review, and I'm a procrastinator), and I hope they are better than they were. Also, I do think it's great that they are all volunteers, donating their time and energy to helping others. But it's still really really frustrating when you go to get something done, and it not only doesn't get done, but it costs more than it would have to get it done right originally. And no, I didn't even learn any thing, other than that maybe next time I'll bring my bike to the Bike Kitchen when I want to learn about fixing bikes. read more

This is run by volunteers and is sort of a hangout, so don't expect top notch customer service. That said, it's a super cool place to learn how to work on your bike, use their stands and tools, etc. They will teach you how to do stuff if you need help and it costs very little per hour. This is a "teach you how to fish" rather than "sell you the fish" sort of place. Revolutionary in its own way. There are some oddballs, as to be expected with such an endeavor, but also some really great, helpful people. Go there! read more

Thank God someone told me about Bikerowave. I know absolutely zero about bikes (could identify and correctly name, oh, pretty much just the tires and frame when I walked in the door...), and was super intimidated by the prospect of turning 5 pieces from a cheap online order into 1 functional bike. Luckily, everyone there was unbelievably friendly, helpful and patient: Ray walked me through the assembly, teaching me how all the parts work in the process- a Herculean task, given how inadequate my mechanical skillz are- but he didn't smack me even once. The experience wasn't stressful or overwhelming, and I found myself enjoying learning how it's all supposed to work. Also, Ray had the forethought to check over important little details, like the nuts and bolts which it turned out the factory had only barely attached. He likely SAVED MY LIFE ;) or at least saved me a good bruising to my ego and bum. Bikerowave= awesome people who will save your life for the low low price of $7/hr read more

These guys are great. During CycLAvia they took to the sidewalk and were helping riders in trouble for free. I had been struggling with a tire issue, which another shop had failed to identify, and they fixed it right away, and refused to charge me anything. It's a cooperative with a lofty goal in mind -to teach any and all riders to fix and maintain their own bikes- and we should all support them. read more

I couldn't rave more about this place. Friendly, courteous, cool vibe, great tools, awesome experts roaming around. Everyone's stoked to simply help you with your bike. I had repairs that would have easily cost $70 or more in a local bike shop, and got everything fixed for $12 at Bicrowave. Plus, you earn a lot of pride and a sense of accomplishment for fixing things yourself. When I was there, the range of people working on bikes was probably age 12 to 55. The only pitfall is that it can get crowded, and you might have to wait a few minutes for a stand to open. But otherwise, this place is awesome in every way. read more

the first time i went in there, i had a tire that needed replacing on a very expensive bike. it had been traded to me by a friend so i didn't know what i was in for. i wanted the same brand -- and the lead guy there, perhaps the owner -- recommended one of their cheaper tires, said it would do the trick. i went home and got my bike. 20 minutes later when i returned, he had found the SAME tire as my old bike and for almost nothing. i bought the pair and had the help of one of the volunteers who basically taught me how to take the tire and inner tube off, how to re-patch an inner tube and then reassemble. he spent maybe 2 hours with me and charged me for ONE! i just went in again tonight and same friendly, super happy, cute guys helping. i was afraid to go in the dark because my lights have been taken/ misplaced and i left there with an affordable light, two little freebies and lots of TLC to the bike, my pedals and me. i left feeling safe, cared for and my bike in great condition. We've stopped here a few times to buy cheap accessories, but today my 11 year old son came learn how to fix a flat. For $12 he got an hour of "rack time" assistance in removing the inner tube, replacing it with a new one and a lesson on adjusting his brakes. I was even able to leave and run a few quick errands after signing a waiver. My son left super excited about everything he learned. We also picked up a new helmet for about half what we would pay at Target or a sporting goods store, and I would much rather spend my money here. I also enjoyed watching folks of all walks of life working together. Definitely a place I want my kid to spend more time. Thank you volunteers! read more

Very cool experience here. For just being volunteers, these people were very helpful and didn't seem to be there just to "see & be seen" They were there to do a service, and they do it well. My rear wheel brakes were shot. They showed me how relatively simple it was to replace them. Just takes an adjustable wrench, new brake pads, and about 15-30 minutes of your own patience & time. came in a couple of times and always left very happy, with my bike fixed by my own rookie hands and a couple of tricks/lessons learnt :) it definitely gets packed, so come with time and clothes you can get dirty. they've got all the tools you need and the volunteer staff is very knowledgeable. they didn't have a part i needed though and offered me a couple of well explained impractical options. they later recommended i could possibly get it a couple of blocks down, which i found very honest and helpful, so i did, and came back to install it. overall excellent experience! thank you bikerowave :D read more
