After reading so many 5 star reviews for this place, i just HAD to come check it out for myself. Started off with the grilled pork with fried egg banh mi - it was good but wasnt mind blowing like some people described it to be. Next came the bo luc lac (shaking beef served with rice) - flavor was great but the meat was somewhat old, you can feel the texture after chewing it down towards the middle of the beef cube. Also, tasted their bun bo hue - it was okay, it lacked lemongrass and soup was luke warm when it should've been served HOT. The last dish was the short ribs with fried egg rice plate - that was probably the tastiest. Unfortunately, they didnt serve it with the traditional nuoc mum (fish sauce) but instead brought our their "house special sauce" that tasted like their main ingredients were: soy sauce, sesame oil, some garlic, sugar and sambal chili paste. Also, every single dish was made with a TON OF MSG. I know some people believe that "authentic" vietnamese food is made with SOME MSG but this place literally used it as their main ingredient in every dish and we all felt the effects of it within 30 mins! Love stopping by here when I am in the area! It is surprising to have this place in a billiard, but the food is good! I usually get my Vietnamese food in Westminster when I am in LA, but this is a quick and tasty spot in Seattle! I always get a take out order of the Grilled Pork Bahn Mi (I prefer it without the egg), and the Bun Bo Hue (the spicy beef soup with noodles). This spot has deceivingly good Viet food priced decently! It's kinda like strip clubs with good food, except this place is a pool hall that's a little rougher around the edges - my local friends say people have definitely gotten shanked or shot before. Dont let this deter your perspective of this spot, I felt perfectly safe when I came and even though it's a dominantly Asian demographic, other white folk did not seem uncomfortable! The menu is quite extensive for a pool hall, and it has a healthy amount of authentic vietnamese dishes! I loved how the broken rice plates comes with 2 eggs with perfectly runny yolks. The table even has a variety of condiments - fish sauce, 3 types of chili sauce, and hosin. I had a great overall experience and I'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu! My co-workers and I pick up sandwiches from here every week. The bread is toasted, filling is delicious, veggies are crisp. My go-to is the tofu sandwich. Short rib and grilled pork are both excellent as well. The Vietnamese iced coffee is super strong and yummy. Service is fast and efficient. Highly recommend for a reliable lunch spot. read more

Yes it's ghetto, but goddamn this food is too dope. I got the short rib combo with the eggs and shrimp. The sauce they give you is A++++. Goes super well with the delicious short ribs. I was very content after finishing my meal. It was $12 and there is plenty of seating with some tv's with sports on. There is a ton of pool tables around and there's usually some Vietnamese homies playing pool so that adds a really interesting dynamic. For me, I never felt uncomfortable or threatened . This place doesn't look like much from outside, and it's styled as a billiards locale. The surroundings may make you feel like you made a wrong turn somewhere along the way. A friend recommended the pho so I met them there. The place is interesting from the outside, maybe even a little sketchy. I ordered the veggie pho and my friend ordered the beef pho. Great place to grab some homey Vietnamese food for takeout (gotta be honest it does look sketch from the outside). They serve banh-mi here, with egg so that was different to see! I ordered their 5 spice chicken with red rice and it really hit the spot. The vinaigrette it's served with really lets you control the saltiness level. Presentation and quality was great - my roomate got the duck noodle soup and it looked pretty solid too. Overall this place is a 4 for food taste but the fact that it's so close to me (under 10 minute walk) and the ladies treat me like I was part of their family makes them a 5 in my book! It's not gonna outpunch Pho Bac or other some other pure soup shops, but those places also lack the rest of this one of a kind Seattle experience. It really must be judged first against other sports bars in the area. Instead of mediocre table games, you're dealing with a legitimate pool hall. Instead of a greatest hits of underwhelming sports bar staple burgers, truffle fries, loaded nachos, and anything you can jam in a fryer, you get some real deal Vietnamese cuisine goodness. This place is sketchy as hell which is why I always have my boyfriend order take out for me. I mean, besides the sketchy bs and gangster vietnamese men they serve bomb vietnamese food. I've honestly only had their viet sandwiches which I found were ok but their short rib combo is off the roof!!! I get it all the time and it never disappoints. You get shrimp, beef short ribs, and two sunny side up eggs. I love the way they cook the eggs lol. They don't skimp out on the meat either! I can't really distinguish what is in their special sauce but it is so good. It's amazing what $10 can get you here. I love their hours and how it's only three blocks away from my home. This might be one of the coolest Vietnamese restaurants because it's inside of a sketchy billiard hall. (Or maybe it's the coolest billiard hall because it has an amazing Vietnamese restaurant in the back.) Whatever it is, it's pretty great. This place has been on my radar forever because I've heard great things about their banh mi. My friend and I came for dinner on a weeknight. It was just past 7 and it wasn't too busy. The TVs had on basketball games and one guy was playing pool. We ordered a bbq pork and Vietnamese ham banh mi (#8) and added egg to it, the vermicelli bowl with shredded pork, shrimp, and egg rolls (#26), and the congee with duck salad (#31). The food was delicious. This place is legit. The banh mi was one of the best I've ever had. The egg made it so good. I've never had banh mi with egg before and it makes me so sad that I've gone so long without it. The sandwich had a even amount of meat, egg, and pickled veggies and the bread was good too. The vermicelli bowl was good too - it's a classic dish. The egg rolls in there were really good - it was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. I don't know what meat it was, but the texture inside reminded of potatoes or something. The congee is something I never have ordered at a Vietnamese restaurant before, but a friend had recommended it. It was pretty good and nice to have on such a cold night. The duck meat is served on a bed of shredded cabbage and so the meat is cold. It comes with ginger dipping sauce and that was really tasty together. I will come back for the banh mi 100%. And I want to try their rice dishes too next time. The food was amazing. The atmosphere is fun cuz it's like this dark divey sports bar. And the lady there was so nice!!! She was really attentive and made sure to let us know we could ask her anything and she checked up on us a few times. She even noticed that we were eating the duck without the ginger sauce (cuz we mistook it for another bowl of fish sauce) and told us we should try it together. And when I went up to pay, she was on the phone, and i was definitely not in a rush but she apologized for the wait (she was taking a big order) which wasn't necessary but definitely appreciated. The customer service was great. I love this lady! She really took care of us and that's a big part of why I want to go back! As we were leaving, we noticed that business had picked up! Authentic Vietnamese food: 5 stars Price: well.... I'm torn so 3-4 stars Location and ambience: 3 I'm kinda scared but food is so worthy it!!!! This is a hidden Vietnamese food gem. Their Banh Mi, their com tam rice plates, and their soups are yummy!!! They actually use legit com Tam Unlike Green Leaf which uses regular rice (hence I stopped going there for rice plate, they are cheating you of a legit experience). Service is quick and pretty nice not like some rude places I've been. The only down side is that this is a billiard place which looks kinda ghetto and scary. Lots of men playing poor and swear words flying around so let's avoid bringing the kids. They are remodeling so maybe I'll be more like a nice bar since there are lots of TV with sports channel playing. I've had food both to go and dine in here. Came here after a strenuous hike with two friends. When I saw the raving reviews about the food in a pool hall, I got super excited and probably 10x hungrier than I actually was. But honestly, I don't know what the hype is about. I got the bun bo hue. It got everything single thing right - the meats, the noodles, even the congealed blood! But the broth was a sad, weird mixture of a pho broth and bbh broth. Later on, I added some of the spicy shrimp paste thing on the table, then it became instantly more enjoyable. It really was missing some spice and herbs like lemongrass. The pork egg rolls were delicious though. They had taro in them, which I really enjoyed. Their banh mi is praised to be the best in town. The bread honestly was great, and so was the pork and the pate. But it was lacking the acidity and crunch from some pickled carrots and jalapeno. So it just tasted very salty. Needless to say, I most likely won't trek down to Columbia City again for this. It did look super popular with locals though. read more

This hole in the wall, locally owned Vietnamese restaurant is exactly what I was looking for when I'm craving some homemade feel good food. Don't let its divey bar feel turn you away. Mama Hoang makes you feel like you are one of her kids and she just wants to feed you good food. I went with a big group and this place is excellent for that. The tables can easily be put together to accommodate big parties. the pool tables and Chinese checkers are a bonus fun perk! Now on to the food. Going in a big group gives me the benefit of getting to try everyone's dish. Yes, i don't know why my friends still put up with me because not only I eat their food, I have to take a photo of it before they get to eat it :D For drinks I had the milk drip coffee, strong and kickin' exactly want I want in a Vietnamese coffee. At the end of my meal, I got a OJ. I was surprised it was freshly squeezed! Appetizers we ordered a few items to try (number 1, 2, 3). The crispy egg rolls and spring rolls is exactly want you look for, they don't skimp on fillings. The chicken wings I would say is my favorite. We tried both the sauced and dry, they came out fresh and out, crispy and juicy inside. I ate 5 of each just myself (don't judge me!) My dish was the number 35: steak, meatball, and tripe pho. Now that may seem simple to you, but it's a good baseline for me to judge. Two reasons why I gave it a thumbs up. First, the broth is one of the best I've had, exactly what I would want o during a hangover or a sick day. Second, the meatballs are legit! Finally came here Saturday after recommendations from two Vietnamese friends to try their Bánh mi. One had told me about the yummy garlic spread the other told me to order the chicken with egg. My dad read that the bbq pork with egg was suggested as well so we ordered both to go and split it at home. Pork was nice and moist. Loved the garlic spread and the hot sauce, the hot sauce is so much better than having large jalapeño slices. The bread was perfectly flaky on the out side and soft in the middle it's nice to have the sandwich warm because the egg was on top and it made the travel to dad's without any sacrifice he only lives about 10 minutes away. There is a parking lot but it's usually crowded we were lucky enough to find a spot. read more

Also, the flavor of the oil that was used to fry the spring rolls was not great and made the spring rolls taste a little stale and old. If you're looking for pho or fresh rolls, I highly recommend. This was my first time and I ordered Togo. Like other reviewers don't let the outside of the Resturant fool you! The food is good for the prices. I loved the special steamed rice and the bun bo hue is good for the price. The bun bo hue comes with good meat and the sate goes with it well. I really recommend the special steamed rice because they really know how to make good tasting eggs, and the grilled meat is quite delectable Sorry I ate most of the bun bo hue lol I only decided to review after eating that beautifully made egg. Upon arriving here, you'll feel a bit hesitant and wonder if you've arrived to the right place to eat. It's a bit sketch.... But once you keep walking past the pool tables, you'll see a small section in the back by the kitchen. This is my friend's favorite Vietnamese place in town and I trust his opinion because 1) he's Viet and 2) he's a food blogger haha. You also know this place serves authentic Vietnamese food when you hear the guys in the back playing pool yelling in Vietnamese. Confirmation that this place is indeed legit!! I ordered the Lemongrass Chicken Vermecelli. My favorite Vietnamese restaurant is Monsoon in Bellevue, which is definitely fancier. They have one of the best vermecelli bowls, but the vermecelli at Billiard Hoang's was much more packed with spices and flavor! The chicken was also tender and moist. Unlike other Vietnamese places, this place uses perilla leaves as one of the toppings, which you mostly see in Korean cuisines. I thought that was interesting, but it complimented so well with the noodles! The short ribs rice plate was so delicious as well. It also reminded me of the Korean dish- Kalbi. This place is a hole in the wall, but those places are the best places to eat! Everything is made from scratch here- even their orange juice and iced lemonade. I'm a little reluctant about writing this review because I feel like I don't want to give away the hidden gem that is Billiard Hoang, but if you've been in South Seattle and you're Vietnamese then ykwtfgo here. Everyone needs to try their banh canh. It is other worldly and I truly can't find another place that comes close to how good this one is! This place is on point. No complaints. It's a hole-in-the-wall billiard lounge with amazing Vietnamese food. The food is fresh and consistently good. I mainly order the steak pho' (with or without some oxtails added). It always comes out perfect, with really flavorful broth and fresh noodles. I have to give them a special shout out for their to-go skills. They pack up a pho' order perfectly. There's a real nice woman there that calls everyone 'hun'. Seems like she's the owner. I don't write enough of these reviews, but every once in awhile I just have to!!! OMG, a friend recommended a couple different things from this place and so I ordered just one. The duck noodle soup. I wasn't sure what to do with everything I got, and it's slot of food, but let me tell you this is about one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. First, the broth is heaven sent, rich and flavorful but not heavy. The noodles are perfectly cooked snd soak up the broth perfectly; I loved how the noodles snapped when pulled apart. The stringy duck meat in the broth is tender and yet chewy. And the aromatics to throw on top were super fresh and flavorful. I do not know if I was supposed to or not, but I threw the boiled duck meat into the soup as well, and it was like I had the most amazing Phở ever. Second is the salad; I didn't realize this was a soup and salad from the description, and this salad is divine in its own right. It's light, crunchy, full of different aromatics, and has a fresh ginger, sweet, spicy, tangy vinaigrette that I would buy at the store if it was bottled. Aldo the crunchy onions, or scallions, or whatever that was were perfect as well. One of Seattle's gems when it comes to Vietnamese food and community. I'm a little ashamed that I grew up around here and never realized that this place existed until very... recently. After a late night out, my friend and I really started to crave banh mi, which we assumed we would get at Tammy's or Tony's. However, they had all closed and we came to Billiard Hoang. We ordered different banh mis, an order of cha gio, and bun ga nuong. Hands down, the food here rivals any of my favorites from around Seattle (the now-closed Seattle Deli, Huong Binh, Tammy's, Tony's, etc), and the people who run the place are super fast with orders. I'll definitely make it a note to bring more of my friends here soon (hopefully it won't close with all the gentrification that's happening around here). This place honestly smells like your Vietnamese aunt's house right before a huge family reunion, and if you happens to eavesdrop on a conversation, sounds like it too. At first glance, you would not expect for this place to dish out amazing Vietnamese food, but it does! This place is a gem and I dare say diamond in the rough because it's one of my favorite places to eat, despite being a pool hall. Once you get past the older Vietnamese dudes yelling out cuss words in Vietnamese playing pool, the place has a really "dive bar" feel to it. Their menu is simple with appetizers, banh mi's,soups, noodles, rice plates, etc. and almost everything I've tried here has been solid. Ironically, despite the various banh mi shops in the ID/Little Saigon, this place is my favorite for banh mi's. They're all mostly $4 except for a couple of special ones that range up to $8. Their pho and bun bo hue hits the spot, and they even have ox tail (if you request it). The special sauce for their short rib rice place is bomb diggity! I'll ask for the sauce separate sometimes to dip with my banh mi (secret player's move). What's also great is that their kitchen is open late most days and until 12am or 1am on Fridays and Saturday!! So when most places are closed, this place is still cranking out late night grub. Not to mention the sweet lady (owner?) that works the front that always takes care of us. Bomb Vietnamese food dropped in the middle of what could easily be described as a dusty old pool hall. My experience with most Vietnamese restaurants is that they do a few dishes very, very well, and the rest of their dishes are at an average to below average quality. I've been here multiple times in the last month and I have continuously been astounded with the consistency and quality of the multiple dishes that I've tried there so far. Whether it's their lemongrass chicken (over noodles or rice), their stir fried beef, their short rib and egg banh mi, or their fish sauce chicken wings, everything always comes out delicious. Those who work here are so nice! After one or two times, they recognize us and are always happy to see us come in. That kind of recognition goes a long way with guests and it makes it easy for us to come back. For those worried about the location/area being sketchy... it seems to me to be an old and tired stereotype. Maybe there was some legitimacy to it several years ago (I can't say for sure whether there was or was not), but traveling to this neighborhood multiple times recently, I've never gotten the impression I'd need to worry about anything.
