As a 73 y.o veteran (Hispanic) who has frequented Ace Hardware, Martinez for over 40 yrs I can not ignore my recent experience and service culture change. The store now seems to have employed young kids who are first inexperienced and secondly very disrespectful. I could not help watch them being very selective on who they greeted and helped. I was completely ignored (perhaps being Hispanic) as I stood and watched their selective greetings etc. I confronted one young kid about this and his response was smug smile as was his cashier friend. After calling Bill, the owner I was taken back by telling me that for a year now he can not hire experience folks because of SOCIALISM. That was a shock and will never do business there. read more

I work for the public school district in Martinez. We were in dire need of a BBQ grill, as our kitchen doesn't even have a stove top. A grill would enable us to change up the menu a bit for the some 300 students that eat at Las Juntas every day. I stopped by Bill's Ace Hardware to see if they had a slightly damaged grill I could purchase at a discount. I was told to contact the General Manager. Wilma, the GM was unbelievable. She had a demo grill which she offered to donate to Las Juntas. She not only had the grill cleaned up, but delivered it with a full tank of propane that very same day! Her kind act will be so appreciated by the students. In a day in age where kindness and empathy for those less fortunate is hard to come by, my faith has been renewed! My wife and I try to use this store instead of the big box chains whenever possible. Inventory is solid, prices usually on par with the Lowe's and Home Depot, and staff generally is outstanding. Would have given five-stars but have had several rounds of frustration, one a few months back with an inability to price something that I wanted to buy (went elsewhere after an unreasonable wait), and recently while purchasing propane (the process is not only inefficient but insulting). Will go back and continue to spend here and hopefully some of the poor experiences will come up to high level in rest of the store. read more

This hardware store carries an exceptional variety of garden soil. It may not look like it, but look deeper. They carry more than the normal one GreenAll product, and even carry Whitney Island products. They also have a wide variety of FoxFarm products and soil. They didn't have the one product I wanted, but offered to order it. Are you kidding me? When asked what the minimum order was, it was one bag. Are you really kidding me? I ended up ordering 12 bags and they could not have been nicer. Even loaded it in my car. Oh, and it took one day to come in. This is the kind of service that is missing in today's shopping experiences. read more

The thermocouple went out on my water heater (resulting in no pilot light). And of course it wasn't a standard issue thermocouple. I started at the Martinez Home Depot and they didn't have one and I couldn't find anyone at Home Depot who could help me. So I went to Bill's Ace Hardware (I knew I should have gone there first!). They not only had the standard generic thermocouples like Home Depot had but 6 or 8 other models as well. I asked the manager for help. He checked and sure enough, they had one. But it had just arrived as a replacement for one that was sold a couple of days earlier. While it was 'in the store' it was in one of the many bins that had just arrived that day with items to be restocked in the store. But while one employee called the other ACE hardware stores in the area to see if they could lay their hands on one, the manager was going through the bins of just arrived items to be restocked (and there were a lot of bins!). Anyway - sure enough, he found the thermocouple! I was able to fix our hot water heater and we all lived happily ever after. You'd never see anything like that happen at Home Depot. Needed a little help replacing the toilet in my home. Went to a few hardware stores around the area and couldn't get any help. After speaking to Bob, a plumber for 35 years I got all the help and info I needed. Went home and put his info to use and in no time the job was finished. Logan (I think that's his name) get 5 stars I went in last week around 730 must of been Tuesday or Wednesday he greeted me outside totally helped me find my shelfs and bug spray safe for my dog. I left there so happy with his service. The next day tho I went in 5-7 people standing around staring at me when I walk in. No body said hi or asked what I was looking for. Finally some old man helped me when I was on a isle for days. 5 starts for Logan and the girl with short black hair pretty young. We have lived in Martinez, moved away and periodically come up here to visit mom. We get her propane tanks refilled at Bill's place all the time and every time your employee Big John in the back has given us the best customer service we can ever expect. Always very courteous, helpful and so very kind. We get 7-10 tanks refilled at a time and he always helps take them out of our car and when they are ready he sets them right next to our car for easy loading cuz those things are so heavy when they are full. We thank him(Big John) and all the other employees for always making us feel like we can depend on you for excellent customer service. Always looking forward to shopping at Bill's place. The drawer hardware on our 20 year old Danish two-drawer teak filing cabinet has failed and we have been trying to find replacement hardware. We called Bill's Ace Hardware and staff member Daniel did some initial research and invited us in to see what was a potential solution. Unfortunately, the item on hand didn't work, nor did any of the Ace inventory, but that didn't stop Daniel from trying to figure out how to help us. He offered to do some tinkering and was able to realign the hardware where it flared out and brought in colleague Mitchell to also take a look. Daniel even looked at competitor websites to see if they could find the right hardware! Even though, they were not able to find the replacement hardware, their helpful, patient and creative ideas made this experience enjoyable. There is no better place to get propane tanks refilled. We went in on Sunday afternoon with 10 tanks and John was not only quick to respond to the back entrance call button, but he took care of filling all those tanks right away. I live close to this Ace Hardware and frequent them often. The people that work there, especially those that have been there a long time, have been a tremendous help on many, many different projects. The thing I really love about them is they retain that special "mom & pop" feeling that is lost in the huge mega stores. I may, or may not, have to pay a bit more. But I appreciate these folks, and I honestly feel you will too, even in those times where you may pay a bit more...but then, you could be paying less than the mega stores too. It was my first time constructing baking soda and vinegar rockets and I needed supplies for a makeshift launchpad. The staff at Bill's Ace Hardware were enormously helpful in finding what I needed. They located the exact length of PVC pipe and two bricks and generously donated an old piece of scrap wood to my project. I waited, they continued to talk for about 2 minutes without acknowledging my presence. Then he walked away and went outside with the customer to continue the conversation without saying anything to me. Apparently they were having some sort of "friends and family appreciation event" this evening. Well I'll tell you I certainly didn't feel appreciated, I walked past no less than 5 employees just to get inside and no one said one word to me. I'm smart, I was reading the aisle signs to find what I needed until an employee asked if he could could help. I told him I was looking for drain cleaner, he just pointed over his shoulder down the aisle i was standing in front of. I stood there for a good 5-10 minutes trying to figure out which one would work best for my needs and no one came to check on me. I finally decided on one and when I went to pay, there were about 7 employees standing behind the counter chatting. I had to ask who was open to ring me up. I left the store and called to speak to a manager (heather?) to complain about my experience and the fact that they're already playing Christmas music and she seemed empathetic at first, then came off as rushed and snobby at the end. So I'm left writing this review. This Ace is not the place with "helpful hardware pros" or whatever their stupid slogan is. I hope the owner reads this. On a side note, the cleaner I bought didn't even work. My drain is still clogged. Had to use the whole bottle, even though the directions said half should do it, and I can't even return it since I used it all. Nice. read more

I saw an April sales ad for a pergola listed in the Ace hardware sales flyer. I inquired at the Benicia Ace Hardware if the product would be available by the end of the week and was told it would be. I returned to the Benicia store only to be told the item was no longer in stock because they only ordered a minimal quantity. I asked the clerk to check with other locations only to be told none of the locations carried the item. I personally called the Martinez location and spoke to Supervisor Bobby Duncan he said he would gladly check other locations. He promptly called me back to let me know that the Pleasant Hill location had a floor model available for purchase and would hold the item for me. I felt that the clerk at the Benicia location did not want to take the time to research this product. I found that the Martinez staff was more than willing to take the time to provide exceptional customer service and was very polite also apologetic for the service at the Benicia location. Bobby Duncan assured that the product was delivered to my home address in Benicia. Needless to say this is not the first time I had a similar problem with the Benicia store having to drive over the bridge paying toll for assistance.
