Went to a wedding on the beach. We all stoped at Billy Jacks BBQ for food and drinks. The place is right by the ferry and the patio was on the river! The groom had a buffet setup outside. The barbecue was delicious. The sausage was cooked perfect. After the main meal they brought out giant cookies and brownies yum! The two young men working the buffet line were great very friendly and busy. The bartender inside was nice and made great drinks. This place will see us again! Let me start by saying BBQ isn't usually my go-to and I'm not typically overly exited to go out for BBQ, it's just not normally my thing, but my boyfriend and his family LOVE bbq so I'm always down to try new places. I've been to most of the well known BBQ joints in the city and I can confidently say Billy Jacks is at the top of the list! I wasn't surprised to as the Groshells know how to provide top notch, exceptional food and service and this is no different! We ordered the spicy fried pickles, Turkey wing special that comes with rice & gravy and 2 sides, and 2 way combo with ribs and sausage that comes with two sides and 2 drinks all for $60 w/ tip. The portions are amazing for the price so if you leave here hungry, you may have a tapeworm! Everything from the apps to sides to meat were exceptional and we were super impressed! I highly recommend ordering a daily special- I was so surprised by the turkey wings. I was expecting smoked Turkey legs/wings but they were prepared much different (think Sunday dinner with lots of gravy) and the perfect excuse for an unproductive evening to follow. I would say be conservative when ordering because you get a lot of food but I always over order because I love to try a little bit of everything. Billy Jacks BBQ is literally next to the ferry. Super convenient if you're going to Atlantic Beach or Mayport. This is a casual order at the counter type place. There is country music playing indoors & out. There are several seating options- indoors, what I call semi- outdoors and outdoor picnic tables with umbrellas. All have a nice view of the St. Johns River. It seems kid & pet friendly in the outdoor space. The menu is posted on a board in front. My husband ordered the brisket with a side rib at an additional cost of $3.50. He also had collard greens and a side salad. He said the rib was excellent and was sorry he didn't order more. He also like the brisket very much & said the collards were good as well. I love fish dip and any chance to order it I do. I also love smoked turkey. The fish dip was a nice sized portion served with tons of crackers. I tried to enjoy it but sadly after about 4 crackers worth I couldn't eat it. It had a weird taste. I could not place it but I'm thinking liquid smoke and way too much of it. Disappointment #1. Next my " smoked" turkey sandwich which was served with a side of cole slaw for a dollar up charge. The turkey was served on a large toasted & buttered bun. I took off half the bun because I really wanted to taste the meat not just bun. While the turkey was good it was not smoked at all. Also, it was only 2 slices, disappointment #2. The Cole slaw was excellent however. We had iced tea with our lunches. You fill up your drinks, take your bbq sauces & condiments yourself. There were @3 types of sauces. I wasn't thrilled about their sweet sauce. I felt it wasn't thick enough nor was it BBQey enough if you know what I mean. I've been patiently waiting for STH's latest concept, and the wait didn't disappoint! Quite the opposite actually! I wasn't sure what to expect, really, but this is what I've discovered. I was pleased to find that the brand's focus on hospitality wasn't ushered out with the introduction of the disposable plates and utensils. Extremely friendly staff, from management down to the line cooks and servers. All said hello, and made me feel welcome! I dined alone so I sat at the bar. I was blown away by the menu options. While this place has the southern charm of a hole-in-the-wall backyard BBQ joint, the flavors of the food were other-worldly. I opted for the Thursday Special, turkey wings over rice with gravy and a cornbread muffin PLUS TWO SIDES! Holy cow. For my sides, I got the baked beans and cole slaw - two sides that a bbq joint could be judged on alone! Both were EXCELLENT! I mean, for real. The Cole slaw was reminiscent of chick-fil-a, which sounds like an insult to anyone who doesn't know Cole slaw. This was awesome. The baked beans were SOUTHERN! Right kind of sweet, and Smokey. Perfect. The Turkey, rice, and gravy.... There are no words, and the photo certainly does it no justice. I'm considering using all of my PTO days on Thursday's and making that a "thing". The portions were HUGE! Like theme park sized . I also added a rib to my meal because I felt guilty not ordering something bbq, and because I'm a Datil junky, and I had to try their Datil bbq sauce. Certainly didn't disappoint! I'd normally break this down individually, but the entire meal was a 10 out of 10. Food 10/10 (Thanks, Chef!) Ambiance 10/10 (great water views) Service 10/10 Menu diversity 10/10 Quality 10/10 Cocktails 10/10 (selection may be smaller than their typical bars, but they have a great line up!) plus a bonus because the bartender had a great personality. I've got a long way to go to try everything on this extensive menu. It's a LONG way from home but I'll be happily making the trip from St. Augustine as often as possible. They actually have some really good seafood. The shrimp is really good although there's only about nine pieces for 17 bucks.. The shrimp is a little larger than normal. I would rate this higher at five stars but when you order to go, you get a lot less fries than when you eat in until they fix that, I'm gonna keep it at three stars. read more

Was excited to cruise up to Billy Jacks and see what it was all about! Did not disappoint. Its counter service delivered to a table, and even though the line was long, we got to order and food delivered very quickly. The menu is large, but it's a lot of options of the same few things (for example, a few different pork sandwiches and plates) and everything looked good! They also have weekly specials off menu on a chalk board. The pork sandwich, which I got the extra large, was delicious. The best part is how different from all the other BBQ joints around here it is. Texas style, heavy on salt and pepper and not sweet with a real pronounced smoke ring and flavor. Bbq is best when done simple and really well. Complimented real nicely was the house pickles and pickled onions. I loaded mine up - onions had a real nice bite when they're usually sweet when pickled. I will note too - you can tell a place thought about a big sandwich with how well the bun was toasted. No soggy bread by the end even when loaded up with sauces. Mac n cheese was good not great, but it didn't matter. The location is a nice scenic drive from in town, and right on the river. Sat outside, watched boats go by and enjoyed the evening. 10/10 place really enjoyed it. Thank god it's not near me or I'd be there way too often! read more

Made it down to Billy Jack's after hearing good things from a neighbor. Naturally, I overshot the entrance. Monday's special was BBQ Shrimp and Grits and they didn't disappoint. The shrimp were local, spicy and prepared just right. Grits were tasty. The collards were a welcome addition and served as nice balance to the meal. A cold Stella washed things down. You order at the counter and your food is delivered to you. Options are indoor, patio and outdoor seating along the St. John's River. Nice. Inside is bright and clean. The covered patio has ceiling fans to keep you cool. Outdoor tables have umbrellas to block the sun. All tables have views of the river and its commercial traffic. Parking, once you get the entrance right (my bad), is more than adequate. Overall, the place has a friendly/casual vibe that I find attractive. The sauces were great- my favorite was the vinegar one. I love sides- they did not disappoint. Potato salad- yum!! First time for these 2 locals and we told the girl that. You might expect someone to tell you how it all works and where all the sauces are located, but no. She seemed annoyed to be working and only answered questions when asked. I ordered the 2 combo of brisket and 1/4 chicken. I asked her if it was white or dark meat. She said I could have either so I chose dark. I received white. My 2 sides were Mac n cheese & butterbeans. The brisket is sliced extremely thick, like 1/2 inch. Never seen that. Chicken skin was wet not crisp and the meat was super dry. Mac was gluey. Butterbeans were the star of the show. My wife ordered burnt ends and got brisket. She sent it back. Burnt ends arrived and when she had to go hunting for condiments. There were very few customers when we were there New Year's Day. Too much good bbq around. Would I go back? Maybe. I had to come see and taste for myself the hype of this place. Barbecue in Jacksonville is definitely lacking at least in taste. Took the ferry across and it's right there to the left crossing from Mayport. When entering, the smell was amazing. The young lady at the front was very engaging and so helpful since we had never been here. We took her up on the Q for 2. Choices of three meats and three sides. The cocktail selection is an added bonus. I got a delicious Spicy Margarita to start and the hubby got a nice ice cold I10 beer. We sat on the back patio to the beautiful St. John's River. The food came out fast and hot. First the brisket is to die for. Popping with flavor makes you want more. We also got pulled pork that was good but not quite as flavorful. The smoked sausage was amazing! The sides were Mac and cheese, which was very good and southern Joe cakes that were flattened corn bread, very good! We were greeted right away, and the friendly woman gave us the breakdown on how their operation works for ordering and service. We ordered the BBQ Shrimp & Grits w/ Collard Greens (Monday special) and a Jumbo Pulled Pork Sandwich. My old lady liked how the shrimp was battered and fried, and I thought the pork sandwich was delicious (even better with the mustard sauce). While we were eating, we also got the treat of seeing a big ship passing by on the river. The dining room was clean, and the porch will be nice on a Floriday. My sister ate a hair in her baked beans! The fountain drinks smells and taste like rotten eggs. I know its well water and my family lives on well water, they need to put a filtration system to take away that sulfer smell. Dinning experience was disappointing .
