    Chocolate Bomb
    Jessica B.

I came here a few times back in 2019. I remember that it was across from the Moroccan spice stall. There's no place to eat on that floor (as far as I know) but I was able to eat it upstairs in the dining area. I was able to try a sample and I decided to get the chocolate bomb and honestly, I haven't tried anything else. I'm a creature of habit. They have four sizes--I get the small, which is like an 8 oz cup. That size cost $6.50. The Teaser size looks like a 4 oz cup for $4.50. Not worth it at all. I do remember that they recommend that you consume within 24 hours. As for the service--in the past, it's been kind of lukewarm to me but this last time was much better. Perhaps the next time I'm at Essex Market, I'll try another flavor.

Located in Essex Market, I visited on a Sunday, the line wasn't long, and the young lady at the counter was very nice. The line moved quickly, a variety of cupcakes and puddings were displayed. I noticed they have an option for a $4 teaser (prices subject to change) for the puddings. I have heard the banana pudding is the best, but I didn't try because I despise bananas, but they have other flavors as well. I ordered four cupcakes: listed in order from favorite to least favorite 1. Chocolate vegan (Not overly sweet, moist cake, and the BEST tasting) 2. Ooey Gooey Chocolate ( almond butter frosting was good, but the cake was dry) 3. Sunshine (yellow cake with white icing, icing was good , but I could taste a hint of salt in the cake. Not overly salty, as in an error made because the icing and cake were not too bad together. 4. Sexy red velvet ( the worst cupcake, it was dry and the icing tasted like nothing.) cute name is all I can say for it. Overall, the vegan is my top choice and I'll go back for just that one. Perhaps the storefront have fresher cupcakes because I noticed another young lady bring in a container of cupcakes and place them in the display case. Not to discourage anyone from visiting this location because you should, I just prefer my cupcakes to be moist.

Stumbled across Sugar Sweet Sunshine while at the Marketline. It's a nice spot with different types of pudding available. I tried the coffee pudding and it was top notch. Service was good too the server was friendly.

The best cupcakes in an updated marketplace setting. This fairly new outpost, steps from the front doors on Delancey street, and basically at the entrance on the Williamsburg bridge, has the same great cupcakes, puddings and cakes as the original Sugar Sweet Sunshine. Definitely hooked on the Pistachio, Oreo and Sunshine cupcakes as you can see from my numerous shots. Yep, they aren't the same photo at different angles, they are in fact the same cupcakes flavors on many different occasions. Yes, they are that good. Moist cake batter, with good cake to frosting ratio, not overly sweet. These cupcakes don't seek to set your waist line back for a week, just maybe a few hours or a day or two. :-) The Ooey Gooey and Red Velvet versions are also quite fantastic as well. They still bake everything at the original storefront which is basically a two minute walk away but with the marketplace's available seating in the food court and other options for grub, a visit here may be more appealing for other needs as well.

If I could leave no stars I would. We ordered a strawberry filling cake with cream cheese frosting covered in sprinkles. We argued over the meaning of "covered in sprinkles" but I digress. Whatever. The issue here is not only that, but hours later when we cut into the cake, it wasn't even the correct cake we ordered! Clearly no strawberry anything, & the taste of flour/baking powder was so overwhelming. I'm a baker myself & just wanted to take the time consumption of baking my own birthday cake for my party out of the equation. I shouldnt have. Would have saved almost $100 & the disappointment & headache. I've included a photo of what the inside of the cake looks like. Y'all make your own judgement. Additionally, they were extremely rude to my husband (who is African American) when he went to pick up the cake. Asking if he's "sure he's in the right place". Being dismissive from start to finish from ordering the cake weeks ago to this issue now. Debbie spoke to me over the phone - slowly sounding out her syllables being sarcastic & just disgusting in the manner she spoke, as if I'm stupid & am not aware of the order that was made. Peggy was at least personable & respectful in the way she spoke to me. Save your money on this place & spend it elsewhere. Awful all around.

I grabbed a banana pudding to go after eating dinner at Dhamaka. Love all the pudding options, which are not common desserts to see (more commonly homemade rather than in bakeries IMO). I wished I grabbed a bigger size but I knew deep down that I would eat it all in one sitting if I could!

I stopped by this past week and got the ooey gooey cupcake (chocolate cake with chocolate almond frosting). Average at best, nothing special. Kind of tasted like something made using a box mix at a college dorm. The frosting had no almond flavor whatsoever, either. I think they're known for their puddings so I might come back for that. But the cupcakes are not worth it.

banana pudding and strawberry lemon trifle filled to the brim!

Soooooo gooooddddd. I'm a fool for all things custard-y and pudding-like and this certainly satisfied my sugar craving. I ordered a small of the banana pudding and the strawberry lemon trifle. The banana pudding was to die for. There really isn't anything else to say. It was much better than other famous banana puddings, and was full of the banana flavor and vanilla creaminess. The strawberry lemon was also very good, although I definitely didn't like it nearly as much. I'll definitely be getting the banana pudding again. Highly suggest getting more than just the "shot" size. The smalls, mediums, and larges are just so much more worth the price, and even if you can't finish it, you'll want to eat more later.

Sugar Sweet Sunshine finally has a second location!! It's located in the New Essex Market, serving us all the same cupcakes we all have grown to love. The chocolate almond butter cream is my favorite. I really love the Bob Flavor, its a yellow cupcake with their famous chocolate almond buttercream. Sexy Red Velvet comes in for a second favorite of mine, their red velvet cupcakes are so good! They also, truly have the best puddings. The Chocolate Chip Deliciousness is fantastic. Chocolate Chip Cookies, Butterscotch Pudding, and Whipped Cream. I can't get enough of it! This location is right when you walk into the new Essex Market. They have a couple puddings on offer, as well as little pudding cups on sticks!!

The orange has a base made of chocolate Rice Krispies. All of them have more fruity filling than the mousse. They are very fragile. I recommend eating there if you can. Finding can be a challenge because it's busy and there aren't many seats. I got mine to go just to be taken to the park across the street . The mushroom kind are totally ruined. It has strawberriy jelly and it was a mess. The orange one was almost ruined too. The mango has some diced mangoes. I devoured three of them instantly. Definitely come back to try more.

There was no place to sit down because of how busy it was but the staff kept the line moving quick enough. The place still seemed reasonably stocked with their desserts and treats, despite the late afternoon time that I arrived. I ordered 4 different treats to go and they're packed in small box individually. Unfortunately, they didn't quite stay intact during my trek back to my hotel and were tumbled around in the boxes. Nonetheless, the taste and flavors held up well and even after a few days in the fridge. The yuzu daisy has this vivid pastel yellow-pink base and adorable gelatinous yellow gem atop a white flower. The yuzu gives a subtle infusion of tart that is balanced out by the light delicate skin texture of the rest. Sitting atop a thin round rice crispy. I loved the red mushroom one which is a creamy pink mousse inside the cap. The stalk is a thin porcelain-white chocolate light base also filled with a rich cream. Adjacent are two cute little tree nuts. The orange and mango have such vivid colors and are aesthetically pleasing too. Just like the previous ones, their delicate chocolate exterior houses a rich tarty mousse-y filling. I think the mushroom has a better balance and variety of flavors. Although I don't eat mousse treats often, I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future, like the blueberry, banana and cloud.

Today I decided to make a special trip to go here to grab a few goodies. I forgot how small the place was and how low the ceilings were. That wasn't an issue though. The place was nice and cakes were stacked neatly. What was surprising to me is that they don't have any cookies laid in the front display. It's all placed in the back almost hidden. I was deeply disappointed with their cookie selection. It was deeply surprising that they don't sell the butter cookies that had jam in the middle and dipped with chocolate on one side with sprinkles. I did ask the clerk and even showed him a pic of what I was looking for and he said they never sold them. They only had the linzer cookies and they didn't look so good. They also did not have the lobster tail. They did have the sfogliatelle which they also called a lobster tail. I thought they were not the same? Some bakeries sell both and they are definitely not the same. I did end up buying one of their sfogliatelle with cream and some rugelachs. The sfogliatelle was good but the rugelachs tasted slightly underbaked. It did taste fresh though unlike many I've had in other bakeries. However, for $28 per pound, I wouldn't get it again. For those not having lobster tail and not having the Italian cookies, I will have to give Veniero's a low rating. I never thought an Italian bakery would not carry staples. Very disappointed. I need to find another Italian bakery now.

I had never heard of the place before, but I was happy to give it a try -- and I'm so glad I did. From the moment you walk in, the experience feels special. The store has two beautiful double doors that create such a grand entrance, and once inside, you immediately feel the energy. The place was bustling with people, and everyone seemed happy and excited -- from the customers to the team behind the counter and the baristas. The cookie case was overflowing with so many amazing choices that it was hard to decide! I ended up getting the Rocky Road cookie, a Double Chocolate Chip cookie, a Two Chip Chocolate Chip cookie, and a blueberry muffin to enjoy for breakfast the next morning. The service was absolutely impeccable, and everyone I interacted with was warm, friendly, and delightful. When I got home, I had half of the Rocky Road cookie with a cup of tea, and it was incredible. The cookie was large and chunky but still perfectly enjoyable -- not heavy or overwhelming. It literally melted in my mouth. The chocolate was rich and smooth, and every bite was just delicious. The next morning, I tried the blueberry muffin, and it was just as impressive. It was light and airy, not overly sweet like many blueberry muffins can be. It truly felt like a breakfast pastry. The blueberries tasted fresh and burst with flavor in every bite. I will definitely be back for more cookies. This was such a wonderful find, and I'm so happy my coworker introduced me to this place!

We walked into a simple and welcoming space where the smell of freshly baked cookies made it clear why it has become such a popular stop. The bakery has a warm, inviting energy, with a steady flow of customers moving through the counter and the open kitchen adding a layer of engagement as we watched the cookies being prepared, making the experience feel more like a classic bakery visit rather than just grabbing a dessert. The main reason to visit is their famous chocolate chip walnut cookie. We ordered one and found it had a crisp exterior with a warm, dense center that gave it the signature Levain texture. The combination of chocolate and walnuts creates a balance between sweetness and richness, although the cookies are definitely on the sweeter and heavier side, and the size makes it feel more like a substantial treat than a light snack. Their other flavors, including dark chocolate and seasonal options, give more variety if you want to try something beyond the original, and we found the dark chocolate version offered a deeper, less sweet profile that appealed to those who prefer a more intense chocolate flavor. The size of the cookies is part of what makes Levain stand out. One cookie is usually enough to share, especially after a meal, but getting one fresh and warm is the best way to experience the texture. The center stays soft and almost underbaked compared to a traditional cookie, which is what makes it different from most bakeries. Service is usually quick and efficient, even when there is a line, and the shop is more designed for takeout since seating is limited, so it works best as a quick stop while exploring the city. The line can move faster than expected because the menu is focused and the process is straightforward, and the staff handle the steady flow with speed and a friendly demeanor. Levain Bakery is worth trying for anyone looking for a classic NYC dessert experience. The cookies are rich, oversized, and memorable, especially if you enjoy soft and chewy cookies. While the sweetness and size may not be for everyone, it remains one of the most iconic cookie stops in the city, offering a dessert that feels indulgent and unmistakably New York.
