I've lived in the South End for almost thirty years and just now going to Billy's. I'm late to the party! The place has been here longer than me, is family run, the people are always friendly, the people that visit remind me of the old South End, it's affordable, (which is rare in any city), many "repeat" customers, (cops, students, families, old, young, etc) and they make the Best Pancakes. Located at 57 Berkeley Street, between Chandler and Appleton streets. They serve Breakfast I think starting at 7am and they are open through lunch time, but not sure when they close after that. I've had -- buffalo chicken sub, chicken fingers, breakfast sandwiches. All delicious -- classic diner food. And if you ask for sauce they give you a bunch of sauce containers, which I appreciate and respect because I hate when places skimp on the sauce packets and you're scraping the last bits of sauce and you've still got 2 chicken fingers left. Billy's doesn't do that. They close at 2 PM on Sundays which is infuriating when you call at 2:30 on a Sunday and you're like "wait why is Billy's not answering." But other than that A+. read more

I have to say it's not normal how good these hot dogs are. To give you a real life story that you can feel. My brother tried a bite a week before finding out he had a brain tumor. He loved it. Came here for lunch upon hearing great things from coworkers. Ordered a large steak tip salad and a buffalo chicken sub. I must say portions were huuuge. Salad was delicious and the steak tips were cooked and marinated perfectly. Really loved the home made dressing as well. Buffalo chicken sub was delicious as well. It comes in a sub roll with lettuce, tomatoes, and blue cheese. Line gets pretty long so I recommend getting there early if you wanna get your food in time for lunch. This is your quintessential greasy spoon in the South End. Billy's was calling my name for weeks. Each day I'd walk by and get a feeling I should go in... but I never did. Usually I'd head next door for something a bit "fancier". And then one day I spotted someone's Bacon Egg and Cheese sitting deliciously in the front window and realized I could no longer ignore the urge! They make a GREAT egg sandwich! So in love that 2nd graders would say, "well if you love it, why don't you marry it?" Yeah, it's that kind of love. We live so close, so it's easy to drag ourselves there, but we'd go anyway even if we weren't so close. We normally opt for perfectly made breakfast sandwiches and coffee and split a large order of fries and some pancakes and also down some gingerale. Not only does it hit the spot, but it's really a diner (for all your Jersey kids that bitch and moan about how there are no good diners around here). Only open for breakfast and lunch, they are also a really friendly crowd and the atmosphere is relaxed. No one questions my sweat pant, tshirt, smeared eye liner and lioness-hair attire. I use to go to school at BFIT and just about everyday I went to Billy's. If you are a full time college student with a part time job, you can still afford to eat at Billy's everyday it is that cheap. You can get anything there and you will not be dissapointed and always leave full. Some of my favorites there were the Pulled Pork, Cordon Bleu plate, or the Corn Chowder(creamy w/ good sized chunks of potatoes) The family that works there is very friendly and care very much about the customers. I love this place. Love it. I work very close to Billy's and they are always reliable for breakfast and lunch. It's definitely diner food and it is delicious. Consistent. And all around satisfying. For breakfast- egg & cheese sandwich on an english muffin. They grill the english muffin with butter which makes it that much worse for my arteries by that much tastier. For lunch- ANYTHING on the menu. They are big, filling, and you just can't go wrong. I like the steak & cheese or the buffalo wrap. Ooh and their hot dogs are amazing! The service is always fast and friendly. It's a family run place, they know all of their customers, and even if they don't know you they are happy to get to know you- no matter how busy they are. Totally hit the spot!!! We flew into Boston in the early AM and were starving. Our hotel recommended this place for breakfast and I am so glad she did! I got two eggs which came with potatoes, sausage (3 large links) and a coffee for about 8 bucks. It was filling and JUST what I wanted. Went here with a friend to grab a bite for lunch since I work in the area. We were there during the lunch rush so we waited in the quick-moving line and both ordered the chicken specials. The special came with a piece of chicken and potatoes with greek salad and pita. The portion of food was a decent size and came at a reasonable price (around $10). The service at this place is very friendly and they treat their customers well. There always seems to be a place to seat inside but can be a bit crowded at times. They weren't the best pancakes I've ever had, but they were satisfying. Also had the steak sandwich which was okay. It was served like a philly cheesesteak, but maybe a little on the dry side. Really enjoyed this place, back when I worked in the area. Their falafel is wonderful and their chicken caesar is great, in particular, but I've never really been disappointed in anything I've gotten here. It's not, like, spectacular, but it's good and consistent. I like the feel of the place a lot. It's welcoming and full of working-class types, and there's usually solid seating. The people who work here are really friendly, chatting up anyone who's up for a talk. Definitely going to drop by next time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

I had breakfast here with a friend recently. The meal was OK for a greasy spoon - certainly nothing outstanding, unique or gourmet about the place. The atmosphere is tired cafeteria style - alright if you want to be low key. The real issue was the price - a bit of a shocker. For two breakfasts (an omelet and hash & eggs with coffee) the bill was just shy of twenty dollars. I thought that was a pretty penny for the quality of the food and the setting. Next time I'd just assume eat at a nicer place for a few bucks more or head over to Mike and Patty's (if you can stand the crowd). Of course the Berkeley Perk (just a few doors down from Billy's) is way cheaper with much better beverages. Their menu is not as extensive and they are not open on Sundays. I originally found out about this place from tun.com advertising a 10% student discount. I figured, what the hey, I'll give it a try. I decided to go there for breakfast before class, and it was great! Their bacon egg and cheese sandwich is just what every student needs before that dreaded 8am class. The staff was friendly and didn't seem offended at my morning grogginess and lack of speaking skills. I plan to go back there to test their lunch menu. The first time I walked into Billy's, I walked out. The line was out the door. I wish I had waited though cause man those Greek salads looked insane and I love myself a Greek (salad.) I have to say though, that had I not caught that salad out of the corner of my eye as I was walking out the door, I probably wouldn't have come back. I mean the average hole in the wall usually ends up being pretty fantastic, but Billy's is literally a hole in the wall....okay that actually doesn't make any sense... not literally. Let's just say Billy's has not won any points with me based on their decor. I have to say though (and forgive me if this doesn't make any sense) but if it was the size of your average take-out place I don't know that I would have thought anything of it. For some reason, when I think to myself "sub shop" I guess I just think of something a little...newer? Okay, I'm sorry I feel like I am sounding a bit obnoxious right now. I am merely saying it was not what I was expecting the first time I walked in there. Anyway, let's move on to the important part: the food. I got two eggs and a bagel (I would have liked to get the Greek salad, but I didn't think it was an appropriate hangover meal.) It was your standard size and level of delciousness. I totally got hooked up with some home fries though. Yum! They were crispy and well-seasoned and needed very little ketchup to do them justice. I also tried my friend's french toast which was extra eggy as well as a mushroom and cheese omelet which was also extra eggy. Hahaha. (Okay, now I know I am writing this way too late at night.) The best part though was the price. For the amount and quality of food, it was very reasonable. Like I said, I got two eggs, a bagel, a small hill of home fries and an ice tea (my hangover non-alcoholic drink of choice) for $5. It does seem as though Lunch is the time to go to Billy's. GO GO GO! Made the trek over here before our Megabus back and what an amazing decision! Got a ham and a bacon egg and cheese sandwich which were delicately toasted, cheesy, very fresh eggy, and amazing. The home fries were actual chunks of potatoes and wow they give you a whole carton! I asked for some hot sauce and a huge to go cup was provided and it was Franks, not watered down as many other breakfast places tend to do. Definitely try it! read more

Huge Billy's fan! I work right down the street and it seems like most of the customers here are from my building or the hostel across the street. My regular order is a falafel wrap, no tzatziki. Amazing falafel, tabouli, and hummus. I also occasionally get homefries in the morning that are out of this world. Fries are typical sub shop fries, which is the only thing I would change about Billy's if I could. Some people love those fries, but I pass on them. The family that owns/runs the place is awesome and they're all super friendly. I could see being intimidated if I weren't a regular, because it can get busy and loud in there, but everyone is really nice. Now that I have visions of falafel balls dancing in my head, I think I know what I'm having for lunch. read more

I stopped in for the first time with a friend over the weekend in search of breakfast. My friend had heard good things and was eager to try it out. At first things didn't look so good-the sign hanging outside was looking pretty tired as did the inside of the shop, which felt exactly like a place from the 1970's. The kitchen is extremely small and right behind the cash register. We ordered up some french toast and blueberry pancakes with no idea what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised to see that the food looked great. They do very good french toast and the pancakes were large and tasty with tons of fresh blueberries mixed in. Prices are very reasonable, but they oddly price everything individually so there's no combination plates like (eggs, sausage, homefries, toast for example). You have to order each thing separately so you wind up with a potentially average value instead of the anticipated great value looking at the prices. Still they are cheap and the food is good. The cops certainly seem to like them as they piled in while we were there and the service is friendly and casual. I'll be back and I'm looking forward to trying something off the lunch menu. read more

I have always said that absolutely no one could ever make chili even as good as my mom's let alone better. Well, I can no longer make that claim. Billy's homemade chili is better than my mom's. As much as it pains me to say it... it is true. I guess I should be grateful though. Billy's is right here in my own back yard and my mom and her chili are hundreds of miles away. I am happy for that. However, I am not happy for the fact that when I go home and eat my mom's, still wonderfully delicious but now inferior chili, I will turn to her and say, "best chili in the world mom!"
