    Appalachian Sampler

Stable Cafe is our second favorite spot to eat on Biltmore property (we are annual pass holders, and our favorite place is Cedric's Tavern). The location is charming adjacent to the Biltmore House. Brunch and lunch are available, and you don't have to be visiting the house to enjoy this restaurant. Stable Cafe is appropriately named as the dining room is in what was once the stables for the Vanderbilt family. There are stores, a bakery, a counter service restaurant, and an ice cream shop near the restaurant as well. If you don't want an expensive dessert, have a meal at the Stable Cafe then go out into the courtyard for ice cream. Service at Stable Cafe is great. Both the hostess and server were pleasant, helpful and friendly. Reservations are recommended, but we were able to walk right in for lunch during the week. Since it was just the two of us and it had been a long time being at the Stable Cafe, we went for the Appalachian Sampler and sweet tea. Everything on the platter was delicious. It was plenty of food for two people...and it left us room for ice cream on our way out! "The Appalachian Sampler $38 Gluten Free Applewood smoked pulled pork, local Spicewalla roasted chicken, Cheerwine bbq baked beans, cheddar cheese grits, southern potato salad, vinegar coleslaw, house pickled vegetables, served with Carolina honey mustard and cranberry bbq"

Everything we tried was so delicious. The waiter made excellent recommendations of what to try and the suggestions knocked our socks off. The cutest ambiance eating in the stalls makes for a unique dining experience.

We went on a busy Friday night. Our waitress was really nice and attentive! We received great service! We started with the Deviled Eggs, they were delicious! I had the stable burger and my partner had the Chicken breast with mashed potatoes! I absolutely loved that the table was literally an old horse stall! Big wooden table with breathtaking details and decorations!!!

I made reservations on line just incase it was a busy day. They were not super buy but we were seated right away. Our server was great. I had a mimosa made with Biltmore sparkling wine which was good. For lunch I ordered the wedge salad with chicken salad. Both were tasty and perfect for a summer lunch. They have a kid's menu and my son enjoyed his chicken tenders. We also tried their red velvet cake and coconut cream pie. They were so good. The red velvet was delicious and moist. The coconut pie had the perfect coconut flavor and I love that it was an individual pie so I could get more crust. The cafe is more expensive but most things at Biltmore are. It is a beautiful setting to eat and a good choice if you want to stay on the property all day.

The restaurant has such a unique vibe and decorations! It looks like a former stable and the server was so nice! I really liked the tomato risotto but the burger was a bit burnt and fries were way too salty.

Beautiful former stable, friendly staff, and great food steps away from a neat experience at the Biltmore house. We are light and had the strawberry salad, chicken salad croissant, and corn chowder in our group so that we could try ALL of the desserts. The coconut cream pie was heaven, but I can't say I recommend the red velvet cake. Honestly, I just didn't taste anything that made it stand out. The lemon crème brûlée was delightful.

I had never been to the Biltmore Stable Cafe until our most recent trip to the Biltmore Estate to celebrate my wife's birthday. We made sure to book a table when we purchased our tickets a few months beforehand, so we could have the full experience this time. Overall, I enjoyed dining in the stables, which was pretty cool, and the Banana Pudding Crème Brûlée was gluten free for my wife to enjoy on her birthday. At Biltmore Stable Cafe, you have to reserve at least a couple of weeks in advance, if not a month, if you're planning on visiting the Biltmore Estate and want to enjoy lunch there. I have never visited this place and not have every table occupied with at least a 45-minute to two-hour wait for walk-ins. So make sure you do your due diligence and reserve a table if you want to dine. The smash burger with double patties and bacon was solid and satisfying as I had built an appetite from making the rounds through the Biltmore Mansion. The Biltmore Bramble was decent and worked with what I ordered, but I felt it was a tad pricey for what I was enjoying and the presentation. The Banana Pudding Crème Brûlée was not overly sweet and wonderfully creamy, with the banana complimenting the caramelized sugar top and filling well. The food was great, the service was solid, the pricing was a little higher being that we were on the Biltmore Estate, and the acoustics are loud since no matter what time you come, there's always going to be a packed house.

    Heirloom tomato and burrata
    Rikki T.

We visited the Biltmore for my mom's birthday and made a lunch reservation here because it seemed to have a nice selection of gluten-free dishes (she's allergic). We were a party of 8 and ended up being seated at separate tables near each other, which was a little frustrating as we could not converse across the aisle. Most of us ordered salads, and it took 45 minutes to get our food. I ordered the heirloom tomato and burrata, and it was absolutely awful. The tomato (and it WAS a SINGLE tomato) was overripe and mealy in texture. It didn't even look sliced-- it looked like someone had dropped it or pulled it apart with their fingers and plopped it on a plate. Very unappetizing. Also, the pita served with it was cold and limp-- it really should be served with crostini or something sturdy enough to actually hold the burrata and ferry it to your pie-hole. ;( One person in our party had the tortellini and said it was nearly inedible. The meatloaf review wasn't much better. A couple in our party ordered the Cobb salad and enjoyed it; however, I tried a bite of it and couldn't reconcile barbecue dressing on a Cobb salad. I've long since given up on finding one with real Cobb dressing, but a smoky dressing coupled with bacon just overpowered it-- the whole point of a salad is that it's meant to be light. The crowning achievement of the meal was my 8 year old's chicken tenders. They were fresh, crispy, and surprisingly good. Overall, exceedingly high prices for very subpar food. We intended to get dessert since we were celebrating a birthday, but were afraid to chance it given the time it took to get our entrees.

A perfect stop to refuel after a hectic day of touring. The restaurant is beautiful and hard to believe it used to be a horse stable, ironically we ate in one of the stables! The food was good, the highlights were as follows: The Biltmore Smashburger 5/5 - great burger lots of flavor Pimento cheese Toast 4/5 - unique dish would have preferred toasted bread Tomato Basil Soup 2/5 - tasted like a can of spaghetti sauce Appalachian Sampler 4/5 - large enough to share, lots of food on here Desserts - Red Velvet Cake 3/5 - Chocolate Mousse Cake 3/5

Amazing location and affordable. The food was exquisite and the wait staff were top notch. Much of the food was locally sourced from the estate. Thank you Paula!

Located to the right of the entrance of the Biltmore Estate, it's actually the original stable converted. The Host was very friendly and seated us right away. Dani was our server and is awesome. She was very attentive, kept drinks full and made sure everything was taken care of. The food arrived right away and was perfect. The price was actually good for being inside the Biltmore Estate, will be back.

What a fun experience dining in the Vanderbilt stables. Cody provided absolutely impeccable service. He was friendly and had great recommendations. We had a productive conversation in which we were both able to discuss the experience and come to a resolution. I am very grateful for the quick response, being open to call, and listen further. Thank you Benjamin! On another trip to Asheville, we will try it again..... ********************************************************** My family and I were quite excited about trying an unique restaurant and seen great reviews, however, our experience wasn't so great! Upon arriving at the restaurant, we had seen some items we wanted to try, but the sanitation grade on the door was a 90, so that quickly changed our food choice and should have changed our food experience for the evening. We decided to try it anyway! The hostess didn't know the menu very well and couldn't answer many questions without having to go ask someone each time. Once we ordered, my brother tried paying for the food a few times and she kept walking away. While waiting for our food, the same hostess "cleaned" a table for waiting guests by wiping the food from last guest onto the floor and leaving it there and continued to seat the next few tables, and then decided to come back and get the food swept up. I guess it's normal because another server did the same thing and that never got swept up. Our food (wings and brisket) was ready. The pan lid was not closed all the way due to them putting all 36 wings that had different flavors in the same container. We continued to inspect our food and the wings weren't hot (fresh), all three flavors in the same container, sauce was clumpy, and wings were very dark and dry looking. We couldn't tell which flavor was which. My husband tried conversing with a young man (tall, dark wavy hair), who couldn't or wouldn't attempt any service recovery with my husband and pretty much told us everything looked good to him leaving my husband frustrated. I located a manager told her what was going on and she evidently didn't have any empowerment from upper management to decide resolution because she had to go ask the general manager to resolve. The general manager agreed to "remake" the order which they did separate the flavors this time and they were warmer. Considering this was a remake the GM brought our order out to us and should have been apologetic, making sure everything was correct and was satisfactory to us. He literally handed my husband the bag and took off. My husband had to make a comment to him in order for the GM to acknowledge him. We definitely would love to speak to a corporate member and or owner, and will make a phone call to them. This was very disappointing, concerning, and a disheartening experience in Asheville!

I found Chestnut on Yelp and decided to wander in. The space has this elevated modern rustic vibe with a southern twist and a little bit of sass. They even sell shirts that say neither hoity nor toity, which cracked me up. Honestly, the atmosphere was great, but our waitress was the real star. She was absolutely phenomenal and looked after us perfectly. My palate was pretty fried, so I started with a Bloody Mary to wake up. Truth be told, it was just okay. The house mix had an odd flavor that nobody at the table could quite identify, and it seriously lacked spice. It was just kinda bland. I noticed a bottle of Firewalker hot sauce on the table, and splashing that in helped a little bit. After that, I transitioned to a mimosa. You really cannot mess up a mimosa too much, and it was a solid, reliable second drink. For the main event, I ordered the southern chicken and waffles. This came with a fried chicken breast sitting on golden malted waffles, smothered in sausage gravy, and drizzled with chipotle honey. It was a really great dish. The kitchen did a solid job with the fry on the chicken, and the gravy had a nice flavor. It leaned a little on the sweet side because of the honey, but it was not totally overdone. The real sleeper hit of the morning, though, was the side of cheesy grits. Those grits were absolute heaven. They were incredibly creamy and perfectly seasoned. If you go, you have to order them. Chestnut is in a great location, and despite the weak Bloody Mary, it was a stellar visit.

Worth Planning Your Asheville Trip Around…read more As a Bay Area foodie, navigating around San Francisco's incredible restaurant scene taught me to appreciate thoughtful cooking, quality ingredients, and genuine hospitality. Chestnut had been on my Asheville dining list long before I arrived, and after spending several days exploring Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, I made it my dinner splurge before heading home. It absolutely delivered. A quick tip: skip the hunt for street parking and head straight to the garage across the street. The first hour is free, and downtown Asheville can be congested with both vehicle and foot traffic. I arrived around 5:30 without a reservation and was warmly greeted by the hostess, who offered me a table or a seat at the bar. Asheville was surprisingly hot and humid compared to the cool mountain weather I'd been enjoying, so the air-conditioned dining room was an easy choice over the sidewalk patio. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Fresh flowers, warm lighting, elegant stone countertops, comfortable booths, tables, and bar seating create an atmosphere that feels polished without being stuffy. What stood out most was the mix of guests. There were locals greeting staff by name, couples enjoying date night, families with children, and older guests gathering with friends. It felt welcoming and comfortable for everyone. As a solo diner, the bar was the perfect choice. I enjoyed all the energy of the restaurant while still having a peaceful dining experience. I started with a glass of Brut Rosé from Spain. Crisp, refreshing, and beautifully balanced, it was the perfect way to settle in after a warm afternoon. Then came the Lobster Bisque. As someone who has made lobster bisque from scratch, I know the work that goes into creating a great one. Chestnut's version, made with Oak & Grist Reserve Cream and finished with fresh chives, was outstanding. Rich, silky, velvety, and loaded with tender pieces of lobster. If I'm being incredibly picky, I would have enjoyed just a touch more sherry, but that's purely personal preference. The smaller serving vessel kept the bisque hot from first spoonful to last, which I appreciated. My only complaint was that I wanted a larger serving because it was that good. For my entrée, I ordered the 4-ounce Petite Filet. The steak arrived cooked a perfect medium rare with excellent flavor and texture. It was served with butter-whipped mashed potatoes, haricot verts, a crisp potato gaufrette, red wine demi-glace, and chive butter. Every component was thoughtfully prepared. The demi-glace added richness without overwhelming the beef, while the potato gaufrette provided a delicate crunch. My only minor critique was that the plate could have been served a bit hotter, but the quality of the food more than made up for it. One of the highlights of the evening was the service. Taylor, part of the management team, was personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. After my sparkling wine, he suggested a half-glass pour of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir since I was driving. Excellent recommendation. The wine was elegant, earthy, and beautifully balanced, pairing perfectly with the filet. As the evening progressed, the restaurant filled quickly. Watching the staff greet regulars by name and efficiently manage the growing crowd spoke volumes about how well-run the restaurant is. You could tell many guests were repeat customers, which is always a good sign. After dinner, I attempted to walk off my meal through downtown Asheville, but the summer heat quickly convinced me to head back to my hotel. I left full, happy, and already thinking about that lobster bisque. For a Bay Area foodie who plans entire trips around memorable meals, Chestnut exceeded expectations. Great food, thoughtful service, an inviting atmosphere, and a dining experience that felt special without trying too hard. If you're visiting Asheville, put Chestnut on your list. Life is too short for mediocre meals, and this one is worth making time for.

With Zoe and Yelp's help we decided on the following food: - Pan Con Tomate: didn't sound like anything special, but really good especially when topped with anchovy (as Zoe recommended) - Gilda: the anchovies we topped our pan con tamate - Pimientos De Piquillo Rellenos: fine, but probably my least favorite thing we ordered - Pulpo a La Gallega: loved, but i usually do when octopus is involved - lamb skewers: I was full by the time these came out, but too good not to eat And for dessert we went with the cheesecake which was so good! Overall, a great meal and I can see why so many people/yelpers recommended it!
