Boy, was I in for a treat! No need to fly to Vietnam to try this, LA's got it! DUCK BLOOD! The only reason why we tried this place was because of one individual in the group who already experienced it and I guess wanted to let us try it, so here we are... Not sure which was more frightening, the jello-like blood (apparently extracted via by creating a small slit from the duck's throat - researched after the fact) that is served like pâté over toasted sesame crackers or the menu consisting of special items that were left out untranslated into English. I did not stay too long nor did I bother questioning what were the possibilities. It took me awhile before I finally decided to give it a go. I was partially and then upgraded to probably trying! And then when more of my peeps tried it, I was like, hell with this, let's do it! I scooped a tiny bit and smeared it on the cracker and down it went! Tasteless for the most part! This last visit, I had tiet canh vit (duck blood) and ca ri de (goat curry). Both were awesome and prepared just right. Ca ri de is spicy, tender, and not gamey at all. Not a bad experience trying out their 7 courses of goat. The food is very good with inexpensive beer. Definitely would come back with some buddies for another drink. I can't even begin to impress upon you how long I've been waiting to try the 7 course goat here. Boyfriend's a vegetarian: he's out. Second course is raw goat blood pudding: almost everyone else is out. Except, of course, for my parents. My attitude towards food doesn't come from thin air, you know. I was taught to eat unburdened by prejudices. So when my mom finally came to town, first order of business was goat consumption. The place was not the dark, smoky, earsplitting beer den that its Yelp reviews painted it as, but that could be because it was noon. It was full of families, kids and all. We sat at the table nearest the counter and chatted it up with one of the owners, who managed to be both helpful and unobtrusive as he directed our herb-mixing, lime-squeezing, and soup-ladling. Seven courses of goat sounds like it's going to be a heavy, plodding parade of meat, a lunch that will leave you yearning for a fruit smoothie and a nap, but actually the courses are neat, small, and sufficiently herb-garnished that you never feel like you're going into a meat-coma. Out of the seven courses, I loved six, and the remaining one would have been just fine had it not been propped up next to the rest of the amazingness. The first three courses are, I think, the best, however. My favorite was the second course, the aforementioned scary raw goat blood pudding. I won't mince words here: yes, you feel bits of tendon and joint in your teeth and yes, it does taste like blood. But it's refreshing in the same way that, say, sashimi is refreshing. It's a pure animal savoriness, with citrus notes from the lime, and on sesame crackers and mixed with mint, it's pure gold. I could sit out on hot porches all summer with a bowl of it and a glass of lemon soda. The first course, goat sausages with goat fat, is very rich and greasy, with a wonderful barbecue-charred flavor and liberally coated in sesame seeds. And the third, a deep yellow curry with onions, and tender meat, is so punchingly savory that I can't imagine adding to it any of the dipping sauces that were left out on the table. The rest is a parade of soups and stews, some rich like marrow, some spicy and full of intestines. They're hard to differentiate now, a week later, but they were different and delicious enough that at no point did our tastebuds become exhausted. As we powered through our fifth or sixth course, a woman from the next table came over to chat. "Where did you learn to eat this?" she asked us. Later, she informed us that as good as this place was, it was miles better in Vietnam. And this August I look forward to finding out! read more

The four stars are only for their food (if you are adventurous), not for their decor, atmosphere, nor service. This is a family run business with the owner's sons running the joint. The type of food they serve here is commonly known amongst Vietnamese as "do nhau" (aka beer grub). The outside of this place has recently been rennovated, but the inside has looked the same since the 80's when it first opened. Maybe it's good feng shui. Their specialty is the 7 courses of goat as mentioned by chair n. but the dishes are much more gamey than the 7 courses of beef served elsewhere. This 7 course meal will set you back a measly $13 bucks, which isn't bad for what you get: - Goat curry - Goat stewed in chinese herbal medicine - Grilled goat meat slices with sesame - Grilled ground goat rolls cooked with goat fat (this tastes much better than it sounds) - Goat blood "pie" (similar to the duck blood "pie" if you have tried it before. ) There are two additional dishes that are not as memorable. They do a good job here of taking the raw smell out of the goat that they serve. The meal is served with nuoc mam (fish sauce), mam nem (stronger version of the fish dipping sauce),the requisite shrubbery of Vietnamese herbs, and fresh Thai chilies. Note, that in the mess of shrubs there will be a herb that is green in front and purple in back covered with white fuzz. This herb called "la mo" in Northern Vietnam and is commonly eaten with raw fish or grilled meats, but the danger here is that it literally smells like methane gas when you bite into it. I kid you not, but if you don't care then be my guest. This is authentic viet food after all... If you happen to bring a date (not likely but plausible), they do however serve up other tasty dishes that have more mainstream appeal (rice with shaken beef, egg rolls, Thai seafood hot pot, etc), but their mainstay are the dishes set aside for Vietnamese traditional drinking engagements. If you have ever had "do nhau" before you will understand that the food is more flavorful and intense indeed. For those uninitiated it's definitely worth a try especially if you are in the mood for some grub that will compliment your beer. The beer selection here isn't phenomenal, but they do have the requisite Heinekens, Coronas, Michelobs, and the ubiquitous Budweiser that middle aged Asian men seem to drink a lot of. I wonder if it's because their wives always buy this stuff on sale, I know my mom does. Surprisingly they've just recently added New Castle to their beer roster. For $2 bucks it's a steal. They serve all their beers with iced mugs that have "built in ice". How you say? Well instead of using ice cubes in frosted mugs, they figured it may be best just to put a bit of water in their mugs first and then stick the whole thing in the freezer. Ghetto fabulous indeed, but also ingenious. Give it a whirl if you love watching Anthony Bourdain and his travels, but if you want a place with "A" rating, good lighting, and atmosphere -beware, this ain't your joint... step away from that ledge. Location: This place is for sure a hole-in-the-wall joint. If you're coming from Brookhurst, it's right after the plaza with Spires on your right hand side off of McFadden. Parking: The restaurant is right on the corner of a five store strip with hardly any parking. I just parked on the side of the street in the neighborhood surrounding it. Inside: There weren't any patrons when I visited, but you can tell right away that this place makes quan nua, or Vietnamese bar food, and caters to older Vietnamese gentlemen. I wouldn't expect service to be great because it's a Vietnamese restaurant, and that is what we people are known for, but the women that took my older was pretty nice. She only spoke Vietnamese and it was cash only. No surprise there. Food: I got the coagulated duck blood and the pork intestines. Gruesome, isn't it? I'm sure if you're here, you know this is an all-time favorite for Vietnamese people. I would give this place a four and half if I could. I've been here more than a handful of time but keep forgetting to write a review. As you know, there are a lot of this type of food (Vietnamese drinking food) in OC, but sometimes the best one are a little sketchy since they are for drinkers and smokers with chicks waking around. I honestly gone to a lot of these places and don't mind at all but this little spot literally only have 4/5 tables and only focus on the food. It tends to be on a pricier side for this area but the quality is well worth it. I can honestly say I had everything on the menu and it's all good (ok-except for the blood sausage-it was kind of plain). The only negative thing I have to point out is the no AC and literally is a whole on the wall so don't expect much in the scenery. $2 beers(?!) + 7 courses of goat = win! Listening to a podcast of Evan Kleiman's "Good Food" on our way back from San Diego, the OC Weekly's Gustavo Arellano made this sound pretty appealing. Suddenly, my boyfriend turned to me with a devious look on his face and said, "waaanna go?" I wasn't about to turn down 7 courses of goat at an "OG" Vietnamese place! I'm going to try and break this down. 1) Goat blood jelly and liver Eaten with sesame crackers, basil, batel (stinky!) leaves. If I ate this with my eyes closed, it would be pretty tasty. It's kind of hard to get over blood jello that dyes the rice crackers crimson. I'm sure I got a good dose of iron though. 2) Goat stir fry I don't remember much about this one. 3) Goat kabobs with noodles with fermented shrimp sauce I loved the meat here and the herbs it was mixed with. I ate this with some noodles and made the mistake of pouring the shrimp sauce over the noodles. I wasn't a fan of the shrimp sauce. It tasted like boiled liver. 4) Lost track of which one this was 5) Goat curry Yuuum. If I were to come back here, I'd get an entire plate of just this dish. It was that good! 6) Goat stew Fatty. Delicious. 7) Goat stew with medicinal herbs Just okay. I have to say, all this goat reminds me of Bubba from Forest Gump talking about all the things you could do with shrimp. After watching Anthony Bourdain's No Reservation, I just HAD to have something exotic -- duck's blood to be exact. I remember my dad serving it at one of our parties when I was a little girl. It looks delicious, but because I was so young, I was not allowed to have any. Now that I am older and more courageous, I was allowed to try any food I pleased. The restaurant is your typical Vietnamese "hole in the wall." It isn't big and only had about seven to eight tables. Flies managed to enter the restaurant because the door is left opened (no AC). Do NOT take your girlfriend here on your date night! Instead of having some Spanish tapas at a romantic restaurant, my boyfriend and I went here instead because of our cravings. Luckily for me, I read some reviews on Yelp before arriving at the restaurant, so I knew what I wanted to order. EVERYTHING on the menu is in Vietnamese. The main entrees are not translated into English, so be warned. I only knew that I wanted "tiet canh vit" which translates to duck blood -- it's number 1 for anyone who wants to order it. My boyfriend and I also got another blood dish. I am not sure what it was, but it was number 2 on the menu. It's also "tiet canh," which I'm assuming means blood dish. When the plates came out, I wasn't disgusted by it at all. I saw some liver topped over the blood jello and got very excited -- I love liver! The item was served with toasted sesame crackers, and lots of basil and mint leaves. To my disappointment, the flavor was very faint and had a slight rotten smell in every swallow. I was able to eat it, only because I drenched it in lemon juice and ate it with a handful of basil and mint leaves, and sesame crackers. It pretty much tasted like pho to me after adding those combination to the blood. The workers were very nice, so that's a plus. They also spoke English fluently so we didn't have any trouble with that. Would I come back? Only if I bring something who can read Vietnamese to help me order something that isn't a blood dish. Don't get me wrong, I love blood clot in my porridge -- just not when it becomes my entire entree and covers my whole plate! My advice to you yelpers, if it's date night for you and your boy/girlfriend, go somewhere romantic and familiar. Do not try to venture out to something as exotic as... duck blood. read more

How did this little San Diegan find Binh Dan? Well...I was determined to show my boyfriend the fewds of my peoples! I actually wanted to have him try "Bo 7 Mon", but I was intrigued by Binh Dan's "De 7 Mon" so that was what started our adventure. I'll be honest...I was a little hesitant about going in because nobody on yelp mentioned that it was an after work drinking place for Vietnamese dads. I was like "oh no...I'm bringing my super white boyfriend in a place where there are drunk Vietnamese dads..." I'm totally glad I sucked it up and went in. I totally expected De 7 Mon to be like Bo 7 Mon with all of their banh trang, mam cham, and stuff, but it was different! I was actually pleasantly surprised. The Tiet Canh is excellent and it's actually goat prepared 7 different ways instead of the usual cooking the meat at your table and wrapping it in rice paper. Our favorite part of the meal was the goat curry! It as fantastic! Even my paleo boyfriend thought the curry was worth eating bread for! My alcoholic Vietnamese coworkers always talk about the various beer grub places they go to after work. Since I was tired of eating the typical pho or bun dishes in Little Saigon, I suggested we go a beer grub place for lunch. My initial impression of the restaurant is that it reminded me of a Vietnamese version of a Mexican hole in the wall restaurant. The best Mexican food I've ever had was at this hole in the wall in Alviso, CA so I didn't let my first impression turn me off. The food served here is typically eaten in the evening so we were the only customers there for lunch. The waitress seemed friendly enough, but the menu was in 100% Vietnamese! My Vietnamese friend explained to me that if they actually printed in English the description of some of the dishes, most people would either faint or scream and run away. Feeling a little adventurous, I told my friend to just order a bunch of stuff because there was no point in me trying to read the menu. I have no idea what the names of the dishes were, so I'll just describe them. The first dish was thinly sliced goat heavily seasoned and pan fried. Very tasty but a little cumbersome to eat because of all the bones. The second dish was finely chopped clams with some spices mixed in and served with rice crackers. This was by far the best dish of the day. The last dish was pork stewed in a slightly sour tasting curry. This was my least favorite dish, as I thought it was a little bland. Total for three entrees and two sodas was $30 bucks. After reading the other reviews of this place, it's probably best to bring a Vietnamese friend to order for you, unless you don't mind accidentally ordering goat blood jelly. read more

We did not know that much about Vietnamese food but came here with friends for a venture. It turned out good and I learned from a Vietnamese co-worker afterwards that this is a place mainly for drinking and appetizer style of food. Place is a small storefront with nothing fancy at all as it's a street style drinking place. The main specialty 7 courses of goat is definately worthwhile to sample. It is special using Goat because most of other places use Beef for 7 courses traditionally for Vietnamese. It's like a set of 7 tapas portion of Goat, so you may order a set of that complementing with few other dishes enough for small group of 4 people. I'd like to mention the server (a young man) who is very warm and helpful while he learned we are not familiar with their food at all. I'm here for the duck blood only, but would like to try more of their other menus. My only complaint was customer service. I feel like there was no equality. The crackers they gave me to eat with the duck blood was all crumbled up into small pieces like left overs. The veggies were very old and dried. This is the place to pick up drinking food in Little Saigon. This place has been around since I was a kid, and there is always some new and exotic dish that I haven't try. Funny thing I was surprise to find them speaking English so well now because the new generation is running the place. When I was a kid it was not easy to communicate with the older folks and they were often rude as hell. There are a few table for sit down, but it not very comfortable even for a drunk. I am a big fan of CURRY if you read my reviews, especially Malaysian, Indian, and Thai curry. Someone recommended this place in passing because they know that I love curry. They said that this place makes the BEST curry goat. So we decided to try it out, that was 5-6 years ago. We ordered take-out, my entire family ... from young to old loves it, and we are hooked ever since. I would not take my family or friends here to eat. It is not an upscale kinda place, or a family hang-out place. We do take-out ONLY ... just about every week. I tried many different dishes on their menu, from raw-fish salad, to escargot, ..., to some grilled meat dishes, but the only dish that we love and that we return for more is their GOAT CURRY. cue music: i can see you! your brown skin shining in the sun you got your top pulled down, radio on baby no, i was not at hooters, or manhattan beach, or fashion island... we were rockin out to don henley and the boss while spooning out goat blood jelly onto rice rackers in what may be the THE MOST OG restaurant in all of little saigon... in the past week i've had japanese izakaya pub food, taiwanese pah-bu pub food, korean po jang ma cha pub food, korean-japanese fusion pub food. so fuck it. lets throw vietnamese pub eating into the mix... we rolled in without cash...i was kind of embarassed at how not-real i was keeping it, but we bypassed bank atm fees by buying a pack of gum and getting cash back from CVS across the street, and felt like i earned my cheap chinese bastard street cred back... we got the 7 courses of goat, which anh n. below me does a great job in describing... the grilled goat sausages with goat fat is fucking incredible.. the two soups were so so and very similar, there was a dry stir fried goat curry and a soupy goat curry... the before mentioned goat blood was the most unusual thing we tried. i've had the duck blood jello before in HUE VIETNAM. i had no idea what i was eating and was slightly freaked out, but i ate it as the squatting villagers grinned at me with gold teeth...i figured i was eating chicken blood jelly after they were making the universal flapping sign with their arms... now: im a fan of morcilla, korean sundae, boudin noir, chinese zhu xue gao. but this stuff is like an electric red tangy jello... topped with peanuts and cilantro... you put it on a rice cracker and squeeze some lime on it... the acid immediately liquifies the jello and bright red blood begins to dribble into your rice bun noodles like you just got punched in the nose by the bolsa boy at the next table for talking shit about his civic or his aquanet prowess... we also got the cha gio spring rolls which were normal and they also offered some sea snails wrapped in banana leaf but my friend was not down with this... its your typical hole in the wall type joint. the guys will be playing texas hold'em on a laptop at the cashier counter, there will be groups huddling around hot pot, and there will be lots of beer consumed. halfway through your dinner, the ice puck ensconced in the curves of the frozen beer mug will float to the top in slo-mo and you will enjoy its ascent and the ingenuity of it all... if you're really lucky, you might be able to enjoy all this while fist pumping to some john cougar mellencamp. by the way, i was on the way to see the peter bjorn and john concert in orange county which i somehow won tickets for... and holy shit, that is a review in itself... it sort of felt like a really good high school talent show. i saw disaffected newport beach preteens, a 60 year old dude overcompensating to impress his 26 year old date, some founders circle types, but the most amazing thing was a real life spotting, tracking and hunt of the cougar... this marvel of nature can usually only be witnessed in its natural habitat: the bars of marina del rey, but i got to see it live and it unfolded mere feet from me!... what a glorious specimen she was too! 45 years old with markings from wet seal... Great hole-in-the-wall for anyone new to or who loves to "nhau" (art of eating, drinking and talking freely, meaning loudly, Vietnamese style of course). Lotsa goat action going on here, the goat curry with french bread was amazingly awesome! I got my fix of "be thui" (roasted veal) with the savory sauce. The spring rolls do not get any fresher! The service overall was fantastic, never went hungry or thirsty nor waited any longer than 30 seconds.
