One thing I would point out is that the restaurant itself could use some improvement ; the floors are very sticky, and the utensils should probably be replaced. Came back for a second visit and once again ordered the 1/2 duck porridge combo, plus two kumquat honey drinks. More than enough food for two and we were completely full. I literally feel like I am in Vietnam at this place, the decorations the colors, felt like home. The food, the chao was excellent hot and steamy, I didn't care much for their duck but the chicken was moist. And the salad was nice and crisp. Worst experience ever at Chao Dem. My mom called 30 minutes ahead to place a simple to-go order. I got there 20 minutes later, and even though the place was nearly empty -- only one table inside -- they still 'forgot' to make the order. No apology, no urgency, just told me to wait another 20 minutes like it was no big deal. On top of that, when I finally paid, I gave them a $50 bill for a $15 total. They handed me $20 back. Really? Simple math -- I should've gotten $35. When I said something, they acted confused, like they couldn't figure it out or hoped I wouldn't notice. Either they don't know how to count or they're scamming customers. And to make it even worse, the restaurant was filthy. We went to Chao Dem last night, and it's usually one of our favorite late night spots since they are open so late. The chao itself is very good and comforting, and the ginger nước mam that comes with it is sweet, tangy, and well balanced. I personally prefer the chicken over the duck, but the chao overall is still wonderful. It also comes with a cabbage salad on the side, which adds a nice freshness and lightness to the dish. We also ordered the organs, which were a little chewy but still good. That said, they came out pretty late and by the time they arrived, we were basically finished with our chao. The Chinese donuts came out promptly and were crispy, perfect for dipping, although they were a bit oily. The only part of the experience that really upset us was the service when it came to ordering. We came with a party of 12, 8 adults and 4 kids, and arrived around 1am. By that time, the kids were extremely tired and did not really want to eat. When we tried to order half chicken and half duck, the waitress insisted that we were not ordering enough food for our party and strongly pushed us to order more. It was presented as a requirement rather than a suggestion, which made the situation uncomfortable. We ended up ordering an extra bowl of chao just to be left alone. What made it worse was seeing the waitress discussing the situation with other coworkers during our meal, which felt unprofessional. We do not like wasting food, and there is no stated requirement to order more simply because you have a larger party, especially when we were not even able to finish everything we ordered. I've been a loyal customer for years, but this will be my last visit. I know that once I post this review, the restaurant will probably know who I am. I've brought countless friends from out of state here over the years because I used to love this place. But after what happened today, I feel completely let down and disappointed : Hot water was spilled on my leg and not a single word of apology was given. The large container of regular water had an oily film floating on top, and some strange black particles sinking at the bottom. Not a single person at our table dared to take even one sip. The food was loaded with MSG which made us extremely thirsty -- but the water was so gross, we couldn't drink it. Honestly, I don't understand how a business can operate like this.
