If you know, you know. And if you don't now you do. Cháo Đêm in Garden Grove is exactly the kind of spot that reminds you why you love food. Total mom and pop vibes, and we love to see them winning. This place has been on the radar of the Viet community for a reason, and one visit will show you exactly why. We ordered a full duck and honestly? Cooked to absolute perfection. You get two bowls of porridge and two cabbage salads with it, and we also grabbed a side of Chinese donuts because how could you not. The porridge is spectacular rich, deeply flavorful, the kind of bowl that just hits different. The cabbage salad is fresh and bright, and the ginger fish sauce ties everything together beautifully. And yes, you get one free refill on both the porridge and the salad. That's love. Service is quick too no long waits, no fuss. They get you fed and they get you fed fast, which you appreciate even more when the food is this good. Fair warnings before you go: it's cash only, so come prepared. And the space is cozy as in, you're sitting back to back with your neighbors. But honestly? That just adds to the charm. The food is so good you'll forget everything else anyway. Already telling everyone I know. Family, friends, strangers if I like you, I'm sending you here. This is a forever spot.

Came back for a second visit and once again ordered the 1/2 duck porridge combo, plus two kumquat honey drinks. More than enough food for two and we were completely full. Shoutout to the young guy who helped us order this time. He was really thoughtful and even reminded us, "Do you want to add fried dough sticks?" which was a great call. Everything was just as good as we remembered. If you really enjoy porridge or well-prepared duck, this is a spot you shouldn't miss.

Food: 4/5 Porridge was wonderfully season, can't rave enough about this restaurant. Seriously worth check out, get the duck! Cooked perfect, perfect amount, not heavy so good! The fish was awesome, mixed off strong flavors. Service: 3/5 Staff was quick, attentive. Drawback is the fact that its cash only : ( Ambiance: 3/5 Odd decor, sorta has some character. Plenty of seating!

I literally feel like I am in Vietnam at this place, the decorations the colors, felt like home. The food, the chao was excellent hot and steamy, I didn't care much for their duck but the chicken was moist. And the salad was nice and crisp. It was busy so I will give a pass on service because the servers were slow. Still a great place.

Welllllll, seen this place a dozen times, never been here til I was dragged. Aesthetically, it's not the most pretty place. It smells like you're a great auntie's house when you walk into her home filled with aroma, but not the cleanest. But don't those make the best restaurants? They pretty much serve their main dish, which is rice porridge aka Chao. I had the steamed chicken with her ginger fish sauce. Reminds me of taste from home. The food is good considering not a lot of places offer this. Their Chinese donut company the food food, and the prices are reasonable. Services quick and oh, bring cash!

The Pho Ga used to be 5 stars but today its was pretty oily. Not sure of they have a new cook since it's been a while for me to come here. Still good but not as good as i remember it.

-CASH ONLY! Open 7 days a week, 10 AM to 3 AM! -3.5/5 overall, but 5/5 for late-night cravings and quail balut. CASH ONLY. Open 7 days a week, 10 AM to 3 AM! That alone earns this spot serious points for night owls and post-party cravings, or post-wedding dinner for our party of 7 We came here on Saturday, 7/19/2025 at 10:35 PM, party of seven. Expect a wait during peak night hours, but tables turn fast, so it's manageable. Overall: 3/5 for quality of food, 5/5 for rare menu and late-night hours. You don't come here expecting top-tier cooking, but you do come here for those dishes you can't find at most places, especially not past midnight. What we ordered: -Hot Vit Muối - $5: Standard, nothing memorable. -Củ Cải Muối - $7: Skip it. Tough texture and off-seasoned. -Cháo Ếch Singapore - $13: Lacked the bold flavors it's known for. -Cháo Lòng - $13: On the sweet side and a bit thin for my taste. -Lòng Gà (L) - $12: My second favorite dish after the quail balut. Worth ordering again. -Giò Cháo Quẩy - $2.50: Stale. -Cút Lộn - $24 for 2 dozen: GET THIS. If you love duck balut, this is the jackpot!!!!! -Cánh Gà Rôti - $14: The chicken itself was standard, but the rice it came with was so flavorful I would order just the rice next time. -Cơm Gà Kho Gừng - $14: Forgettable. The sauce and texture lacked punch. -Bình Trà Nóng- $3: Cold, diluted, and not refilled. -Nước Đá Me - $5: More ice than tamarind. Skip. Cost Breakdown: Subtotal: $112.50 Automatic Gratuity (Party of 7 @18%): $20.25 Total: $132.75 Final Notes: -If you're Vietnamese, you'll recognize this as classic nhậu-style food. Think drinking snacks, late-night bites, and comfort foods for hangovers or hard cravings. -Strip mall parking is free and plentiful after 11 PM. -Loud environment is expected, most folks are coming from bars and clubs. *****Must try: Cút Lộn (quail balut) and Lòng Gà***** -BRING CASH! Great for what it is: a place that's open late and hits specific cravings you won't find elsewhere in Westminster/Garden Grove. Just don't expect high-end cooking and top notch service.

Worst experience ever at Chao Dem. My mom called 30 minutes ahead to place a simple to-go order. I got there 20 minutes later, and even though the place was nearly empty -- only one table inside -- they still 'forgot' to make the order. No apology, no urgency, just told me to wait another 20 minutes like it was no big deal. On top of that, when I finally paid, I gave them a $50 bill for a $15 total. They handed me $20 back. Really? Simple math -- I should've gotten $35. When I said something, they acted confused, like they couldn't figure it out or hoped I wouldn't notice. Either they don't know how to count or they're scamming customers. And to make it even worse, the restaurant was filthy. Tables weren't cleaned, napkins and trash left out, and I literally saw roaches crawling near the kitchen area. Absolutely disgusting. This place clearly doesn't care about their service, their customers, or even basic cleanliness. I'll never come back here -- and I'll make sure to warn everyone I know.

Late hours, large portions, AND good prices?? Say less! I ordered the Chao Goi Vit which is the duck congee with salad. The flavors of the congee and the salad were good. The congee is a bit thinner. My family usually likes to eat their congee that way as well, however personally, I like it when it's thicker. It was still good and comforting though! The duck came on the side and it was super juicy and tender and came with a good portion of meat. Keep in mind, this is a cash only restaurant. I didn't realize that until I walked in and luckily I had some on me so I didn't have to turn back around. Plenty of seating inside. The service is not very attentive though. Only time someone came to my table was to deliver the food. Nonetheless, I like the food and it's also great for if you're feeling sick or just need something comforting. I'll definitely be back!

4/5 This place opens late and very good price for whole or half boiled duck/ chicken. They have a variety of options from Vermicelli ,too rice noodle to Porridge. Popular place for family gatherings since their seasonings are perfect for homemade meals. They use ducks that are not too fatty, so the meat tastes great. Boiled to perfection, meat is tender not chewy Their chinese fried donut ( giò cháo quẩy) is exceptionally good !must try Their Nuoc mam gung is really good as well Maybe crowded at night. Overall, they have been nearly perfecting and maintaining the flavors of Chao Vit in my opinion

    Chao dui ga

TLDR: It's a pretty solid spot that provides a light meal with good portions. This is a sick or cold weather day restaurant. This place only takes cash, though, so I would come prepared. Chao: The congee is on the thinner side. Some people love this, but not me. I was hoping for a thicker congee. Nonetheless, the flavor of the congee was pretty good. There was a hint of pepper, which offered a bit of unexpected heat. Pho: This is one of the better pho broths that I've ever had. I like it since most of the phos that I eat will linger in my mouth hours after the meal. This one is not one of those. The chicken soup broth was light yet packed with the chicken flavor. The rice noodles were good, and the portion could feed two people if they wanted a "heavy snack." Chicken Thigh (Ga Dui): The chicken thigh was essentially boiled chicken. It's not the softest and offers minimal flavor. I wouldn't go here if I just wanted chicken. Ambiance: It's your everyday Vietnamese restaurant. Paper table covers and a very unremarkable restaurant design. Service: You're here because you want to get fed. The staff don't really care for your well-being. They only want to know what you want so they can give it to you. Some of them aren't comfortable with English, so be careful with ordering, since they will try to sell you something that you may not want. Know what you want before ordering, and order just that.

Half of the chicken pho - so good

Been a fan of Chao Dem for the past few years. Very generous portions without breaking your wallet. We love their Chao Ga (chicken porridge) which comes with a large serving for Goi Ga (cabbage salad). One order is enough to be split into two portions. Their Pho Ga is also very delicious. They give so much broth! Love their chicken breast chicken pho. Meat is super tender and their ginger fish sauce dip is out of this world. Only downside is the cleanliness of the restaurant. If you can look past that, the food is great.

Have been to this restaurant many times, and food is always consistent! Came visit to the restaurant last week, and ordered my favorite Grilled Escargot with Garlic Butter and Peppercorn, Grilled Scallops with Cheese, and my all-time favorite Chilean Sea Bass hot pot! The grilled escargots are a must-have when visiting this place! These are perfectly grilled with rich garlic butter for sweetness, and with a slight kick of spiciness from the peppercorn. Don't forget to also dip the escargot meat with black pepper and a few squeeze of fresh lime juice! If you like melted cheese, then the grilled scallops with cheese would be the perfect match. Each scallop is covered melted cheese and comes sizzling on a hot plate when ordered! Last but certainly not least, my favorite dish of this restaurant is the Chilean Sea Bass hot pot. The order comes with your own tabletop gas stove, along with a hot pot filled with a tom yum like sour soup base. For ingredients, it also includes a plate with slices of pineapple, quarter cut fresh tomato slices, fresh bean sprouts, rice noodles, and a full plate of large pieces of Chilean Sea Bass. Just put all the ingredients in the hot pot and let it cook for 5-10mins on high, I promise you it is one of the best soups you will ever have! Service is good as always. This place always seems to be busy, so you may have to be on the waitlist during certain business hours (eg holidays, prime dinner time, etc). Parking wise, the restaurant is located in a busy plaza, and so you may have to drive around a few times before finding an open spot. However as I said earlier, it's worth the wait. Highly recommended.

The escargot was a little chewy, but the savory sauce made up for it. For our main dishes, we ordered the Tom Yum seafood hot pot, which was just okay. We also had the deep-fried tilapia, which was cooked perfectly--crispy on the outside. It's hard to go wrong with anything deep-fried here. You can tell they put a lot of time and care into making it. The Wagyu beef was the real highlight.
