We came to Birdcage on one of the first Friday nights it was open, and we had a wonderful experience! The vibes are VERY cool - I loved the light fixtures and all of the cool wallpaper. It's definitely a photo-friendly spot if you're wanting to spruce up your Instagram feed. There was a bit of a wait when we arrived, so we got cocktails at the bar. I got the Short Fat Mango Thing, which is a form of spicy mango margarita. It's certainly heavy on the liquor, so you get good bang for your buck. My husband Brooks got the Aspirin Tablet, a delightfully tropical cocktail of OJ, pineapple, plenty of rum, and a hint of coconut. I repeat - these drinks are STRONG. If you're not trying to have a night of serious drinking, I recommend getting a beer or something instead. For an appetizer, we got the street corn. It is cream-based and comes with corn rounds. I recommend putting some hot sauce on these for an additional kick. For our entree, we got half a chicken, half a rack of ribs, and a side of black bean croquettes to share. Even though we ordered the croquettes with our meal, they came out early, so we'll make sure to emphasize that we want them served with our meal next time. These delicious vegetarian bites came with tangy sauces and were a good side dish with the meats. The chicken, which is Birdcage's signature dish, was perfectly seasoned and was great heated up the next day. The ribs were my favorite - they fell right off the bone. I recommend them with the barbecue sauce. The bathrooms are gender-neutral, and there was no line despite the wait at the restaurant. Parking is easy, as there is a large lot at the Larkin where Birdcage is located. I anticipate that the hype will build and the wait will grow for this cool spot, so I recommend you come now! A lovely place with a lot of spaces, to spend time with bright day light. I love how dynamic the environment is. The food is acceptable to me (but it was great to my husband and mother-in-law), and the people are simply nice. The chicken was a little dry. My brother had the ribs and my mom the salmon cakes, they both enjoyed them. Service was good and the sauces.

I've eaten here at least five times now and it's because of the grilled 1/2 half chicken. It's my go-to meal when I don't feel like cooking. The chicken is perfectly cooked and seasoned and the cilantro cream sauce puts it over the top! Add those delicious chunks of sweet potato that have just the right amount of crispiness and salt, and I'm in food heaven! read more

I really wanted to like this place more than I did. This is a great little patio bar. I love the decor and design of this place. The location is great, and it has such a great vibe. Unfortunately, the food was just not all that impressive. I ordered the shrimp tacos and street corn, and my friend had the chicken with rice and plantains. While my shrimp weren't burnt, they had absolutely no seasoning and a slight burnt taste to them like they had been cooked on a grill where something had been burned previously. The corn was just meh. My friend said her chicken was cooked well, but it and the rice were devoid of any flavor whatsoever, and the plantains were decent but not exceptional. We both agreed that our food could do with more seasonings and salt. Overall, this is a great place to go and have drinks. But if you're looking for authentic - or even decent - Mexican food, I wouldn't recommend eating here. read more

Crazy good chicken. Walked here on a whim with two friends and was blown away by the quality. There was someone in a full chicken costume, too, shouting at everyone as they walked in but I'm not 100% he was affiliated with the restaurant as he used a lot of profanity. And I mean a LOT. Good food, great service, fun decor! Out riding around on scooters with my sister and stopped here for lunch. We shared the Kale Salad and two appetizers. The Kale salad is big and fresh. Really enjoyed the dressing and egg mixed all in. We had the black bean croquettes. These are full of flavor and large portions make it easy to share. We also split the sweet potato cubes - divine! The layers are thin and perfectly cooked with a crispy outer layer. Made me think of baklava, but a savory version. The staff is friendly and very attentive. I would give this place about 3.5 stars. The food was good, fun ambiance and great service except for the woman who tried to take my plate while I was visibly still eating. The food was good, except that the main dish was kind of bare. We ordered 2 appetizers that were delicious (sweet potatoes and the squash dish) and the grilled shrimp as a main. It is 2 nice size shrimp skewers with a heaping side of pickled onions, some sauces, and tortillas. You can order rice and beans a la carte as a side to go with it. We also had dessert. All of the food was delicious. This restaurant has a fun atmosphere, but is very noisy and it would be great if the owner would consider putting something in the rafters to help absorb the sound. Since we were sharing everything we ordered, I asked for larger dinner size plates, instead of the small plates that they give you. The service was so good that the team members came by at least 3 times to try to clear our plates (except for the one who was literally reaching for my silverware as I was still eating). read more

I've been to Birdcage twice now and I have to say, it's become a favorite! We loved sitting on the patio but the afternoon sun gets very bright. Sun shades would be nice. We had 2 different waiters- Austin & Kate. So welcoming, both offered menu options. I went back the second time because Austin was such a delight! The food- the fire roasted street corn- OMG! Love this appetizer! We loved happy hour, fun drinks, priced just right. So far I've tasted the ribs, the shrimp, the chicken. The sauces were great. Birdcage was just what Grant Park needed! It is an intimate space with beautiful pink décor! They serve elevated & uniquely flavored Mexican dishes and cocktails that taste as good as they look. This is definitely one of those Instagram-able restaurants! Perfect for date night or a GNO! No reservations are taken, so get here early because it fills up fast! The parking lot is on the small side, so Uber, walk or carpool if you can. For my drink, I ordered one of their rotating frozen drinks. I can't remember everything that was in it, but it tasted amazing. I tried the sweet potatoes bravas and really liked that they used sweet potatoes for this dish instead of regular potatoes. Next, I got the red chicken tacos, which reminded me of birria tacos, because they came with a consomme for dipping them in. The flavor of these tacos and the consomme was out of this world good! I also ordered a side of sweet plantains and they were cooked to perfection. I also love that they have 6 sauces to choose from and they are not all spicy. I love dipping my food in sauce to add flavor to it and all 6 of their sauces pack a ton of flavor. They also offer a Happy Hour Monday-Thursday from 4:00-6:00, where you can get half priced wine and beer and select drinks for $5! They also have a variety of tostados for $3-$5. Birdcage is a newish addition to the Memorial corridor from the chef who brought Firepit Pizza Tavern. This is my second visit to Birdcage for lunch and it's a solid pick. From the food to the service, there is nothing I can complain about. Forget about the decor - it's vibrant, welcoming, and elegant. But the food and cocktails were the main event. Started with the Chile lime street corn and Short, Fat, Mango thing (think spicy margarita). We also had the birria quesadilla (daily special) and kale salad. I could have sat until dinner. Everything was amazing and our server was attentive and nice. Looks like they also have daily happy hour from 4-6pm...which we will definitely return for that. Great location and great atmosphere. the food needed a little improvement. I ordered the Street Corn appetizer and there was not a lot of corn, and the corn tasted more like frozen corn, not fresh off the cobb corn as I would have expected. it was then served on a huge bed of queso fresco, which made the dish seem too cheese forward with very little corn. the tostadas served with it were fresh and crispy, but they had way too much flake salt. The steak main dish was much better and cooked to the proper temperature, but it too was seasoned with a bit too much flake salt. The service was OK but our server did leave us waiting a long time to order, order additional drinks, and to get the check. read more
