On our way back to Chicago, from SE Michigan, we made it a point to time our trip home to have an early dinner. It's just that good! Warm and inviting atmosphere and service, but the food. Yum! Cannot say enough for the culinary choices and preparation. The food is amazing and antelope is my go to red meat! If you haven't tried it, it's a must for any carnivore. Want a lighter meal, but still extremely satisfying, go with the halibut. Duck Rilette as an appetizer was new for us. Spread the duck over crustini, with sweet jam and ground mustard and you have flavor packed bite. Balanced and very surprising how good it was/ There's parking on the street or off the side of the building. Never a problem. Being Labor Day weekend, the dining room had a long waitlist so we opted to eat at a table in the bar with no wait. Robert was wonderful! He greeted us with upbeat sincerity & kindness. He was knowledgeable & personable, making the difference. Dinner was ok-Burger & fries & pasta with scallops & shrimp. The shrimp could have use more cooking time and been served hotter though I didn't complain. This is a special place in the Boulevard Inn. We were staying there and wanted a good restaurant; who knew the best restaurant in town was in our hotel. We had a table with a slight view of the lake. Food was excellent. Rarely see a Romesco sauce on a menus, it was amazing. The waiter was nice, and informative. For an upscale restaurant the one thing they could improve is Service. Our salad came before our cocktails and we had to ask for fresh cutlery for our entrees. Would also prefer table cloths, rather than a bare table. read more

We have gone to Bistro a few times on our way from Grand Rapids to New Buffalo. This is essentially a hotel restaurant, set up on the boulevard that overlooks the Lake, but it's a really good one. A number of the chef's specials have been excellent, including a really lovely fall ragout they had last year. The cocktails are also particularly notable. Overall, it tends to be lively, especially on the Friday nights when we usually go, but the food is good, the service is attentive, and we have never had a bad experience. We have been to the bistro many times, but tonight was extremely disappointing. We sat at the bar for dinner and they brought both our appetizer and dinner at the same time but extremely late. I think it took 20 or 30 minutes to get both of them. That wasn't the worst of it. We got showered in a glass of red wine that got tipped over on the bar by one of the serving staff and nobody even apologized. We literally got handed a glass of club soda and a rag and were told here this should help. Nothing was taken off the bill. No manager came over to apologize. Not even the wait staff apologized for the incident. Meanwhile the red wine spill looked like a murder scene. It was very unfortunate and honestly don't know how quickly we will be back. read more

Service is always good. Environment is relaxing and inviting. Everything I have tried has been well prepared and flavorful. Very nice wine selection. Highly recommend the artichoke dip appetizer. What a wonderful dining experience for our anniversary celebration! We were seated in the back corner table with plenty of privacy. We had the pleasure of having Cortney as our waitress. The staff all signed an anniversary card for us, and we received a complimentary dessert of a flourless chocolate cake. I had the Bistro Burger which was out of this world. My wife had the grilled shrimp sandwich which was also excellent. We also shared an Irish apple cake for dessert which included ice cream and caramel sauce. While not packed, there were plenty of other diners in the restaurant, yet they were barely audible. This enhanced our experience as my wife and I were able to enjoy our delicious meal as well as the beautiful ambiance. It looks like they have now added a side salad to the menu. No dessert at brunch though, so that is a bummer, and they don't have fresh orange juice. Just Tropicana. December 2023 I was here recently for brunch. I tried the Caesar salad and biscuits and gravy. The gravy was very spicy, a bit too much for me. Eggs were well cooked. I do wish they had a side salad. The salad was huge and I could not take it home because they dressed it. It was more of a vinaigrette than real Caesar dressing, and there was not enough for the salad so I requested more. What a great experience we had for dinner tonight. Very intimate but yet relaxed at the same time. We were greeted right away and set at a table by the window with a great view of the sunset. We started with espresso martinis which tasted great. We proceeded to have the bread appetizer which I was very found of the jam which was made from tomatoes and mixed with some additional seasonings. When our meals came the presentation was very elegant. I had the halibut which I have never tried anywhere before. It did not have a fishy flavor at all. The texture and cook was perfect. The waygu was cooked perfect as well. The potatoes had a light crust and the sauce that came with the meal was very tasty. Overall great experience and service was on point as well. read more

We made our reservations on open table about 45 minutes prior. I had asked if we could have a window seat to see the sunset. We got there and got just that. Our server Bob was super friendly and cool. I never mentioned that it was our anniversary but when I did, he was so awesome and returned with an anniversary card. Our food was amazing! This is the most consistent restaurant here. It tops almost any other place, including the higher end places. The service, food and drinks are always above expectation. I have not had a single bad meal here. Or drink. Their cocktails are thoughtful and tasty. They mostly pack a punch also. We have come before and ordered just appetizers spaced out. Other times, dinner and the latest visit was for Mother's Day brunch. The Caesar salad with bread was incredible. Sounds lame but try me when I tell you this. Stopped in for drinks on the beautiful outdoor deck overlooking Lake Michigan. Our server, Courtney, took care to explain the drink selection and shareable choices. I'll ask for her again. Started with the Michigan Mule - right up my alley with Traverse City Distillery Cherry Vodka yet a little sweet for my husband. The artisan cheese plate was well balanced with a triple cream Brie, prosciutto, strawberries, almonds and a tomato jelly that was sweet and tasted more an apple butter. Excellent! We thought it would be worth the try. It wasn't. While the location and ambience is a 5, the service and food quality is a 3 at best. Bartender and drinks were great. It goes downhill from there. We arrived 30 min early for our reservation. The place was maybe 30% full. Waited until 5 min after our reservation time to be seated. Not a big deal. However, the bread service was the best part of the meal given it was the hottest serving. Too bad they charge 7 bucks for bread and butter. Not that I'm stingy. I'll pay for good food. We ordered the chicken and grits, both burgers, lamb and regular, and I had the tournados. My meal was luke warm and my son's lamb burger arrived 15 min late after we all finished our food. While the server was very kind and offered a free dessert we were ready to get home. Really hoped for better and sorry to have to write this post. Just looking to save future patrons. read more

Recently moved to St. Joseph from Chicago and we're only sad to be leaving some of the most incredible restaurants in the world. After dinner at the Bistro, we are not so sad! This hidden gem blew us away- from the lemon drop martinis to the Humboldt Fog Brûlée to the Oscar style salmon! I wanted scallops and pasta for my big day. We've never been to bistro before so I wanted to try something new in town I haven't been. This was not a mistake! Best scallops I've ever had and I have great ones before on the water of Florida, fresh out of the water. Bistros beat that. Our waitress was so kind. I can't remember her name, but she was middle aged with braces, and a brown apron on. We couldn't find out the fancy salt shaker so we poured some on a plate and she made us change out before delivering our food just to ensure we get excellent service. She never took anything from our table with scraps on it without asking if we were finished. Our drinks were never empty, and everything came out so nicely. The food was exquisite, the only thing was the side salad we started with was a little sad but still good quality ingredients. We then ordered the spinach and artichoke dip. WOW. This was not your average one you'd get at Applebees, this thing took time and effort no doubt. It came with the perfect amount of sliced, lightly toasted baguette bread. To drink I wanted to try their expresso martini named "cool beans" holy cow this thing was perfect. Tasted like genuine expresso, high quality alcohol and was topped with a few expresso beans. You literally couldn't taste the alcohol in it because it was blended so well, with a lot of care. I ended up having 4 of those. I'm not a big person to show out for my birthday in public, but we did ask if there was a dessert recommendation for my birthday. Our waitress' face lit up with excitement. Even though I'm sure she gets so many everyday, this stranger was excited for me and wanted me to celebrate it! After telling her, she goes and grabs us two glasses of champagne on the house, and a dessert menu. As she put it down she began to go over each one of my options and gave me her recommendation. We got the flourless cake. A few moments later she comes to deliver this dessert with a huge plate spelling "happy birthday" with fine chocolate, and a lit candle at the top of this giant chunk of cake. It has some kind of berry and cream dollop on the platter as well to dip it in. As she understood she knew I wasn't a huge birthday celebration girl in public, so she politely said "happy birthday" and gave us our time to enjoy. This place was very magical and the dinning room had soft light, and real candles at every table. The chairs were gorgeous but also comfortable, they had everything so tastefully placesd and decorated for the season. All round I highly recommend the Bistro. Very kind attentive staff, great ambiance, and high quality food. I will most likely be celebrating more than just birthdays at this restaurant. By far the best we have in town! read more
