It's been several years since we have been here but wanted to give them another try. The sangrias were awesome and the service was good! The menus were hard to read... it was a small 8.5x11 in a crumbled up cheap, plastic sleeve and the backside was printed upside down. We ordered a tri tip sandwich to split and it was really bad. Every bite we took, we had to chew around the fat. We don't even think it was tri tip... it was so tough. It was embarrassing leaving a bunch of chewed up meat on the plate. Not only was the meat fatty and tough, it really didn't have much flavor. They used to play Hawaiian music but today it was music with a ton of ads. Not very relaxing. Once our meal was done, I mentioned to the waitress my plate has two giant chips on it... she said unfortunately most of them are that way. Glad we gave them another try, but feel like we wasted our money. We have ordered the sandwich in the past and it was good. Hopefully, they are not struggling... but quality of food, menus and chipped plates are not a good sign. I came here for brunch yesterday and me and my friend had a great time. He told me about this place, and I had no idea this existed in the area. This Hawaiian French restaurant is something out of LA, San Francisco, or even Honolulu/Waikiki. Such a great brunch spot! The interior decor is like a ruined old-French still quarter building with the visuals of balconies just like Paris. There are even classic vintage French poster prints on the wall with an island touch of plants hanging and the music of Polynesian reggae in the background. The menu is great with lots of items to choose from as well as a wine list. We started with a mimosa carafe with 5 different juice flavors to choose from like mango, strawberry, passionfruit, orange, etc. I ordered their Loco Moco which was good but nothing out of the ordinary. I did love the way they cooked my burger patty (medium), so it had some nice char texture. My friend ordered the garlic shrimp with coconut fried rice. This tasted delicious and very authentic. It was better than some dishes I actually had in Hawaii. The French toast was regular and tasted nothing different than other's I've tried. It was toasted more than the usual to give it some crispy texture in which I loved. Overall, this bistro is phenomenal, and I will definitely take my family here for brunch next time. We arrived just after they opened. It was just my wife and I. I could see that there were several tables open that would seat four. The staff guy wearing glasses immediately shoo'd us out to sign up on the wait list. We were the only ones on the wait list. Waited for 15 minutes. No one came out to check the list. I stood up and looked through the front door. The staff person who shoo'd us saw me and came out to tell me that the table will be ready in 3 minutes because they "didn't want to waste a large table". What?! I get it, mistakes happen, but he simply could have apologized for the wait and this review would have never existed. Our server (she was sweet) mentioned that since the party of six was ahead of us that there will be a long wait. It was like beating on a dead horse, but I kept my composure. We then noticed couples simply walk in and get seated at tables for four. I guess they didn't need to sign their names on the wait list as well. The vibe was unfortunately awkward for us and the staff. We were looking forward to trying this place out, but our first experience was tainted. Such a bummer. We always try to support small businesses and I want them to succeed. Such small efforts can amount to so much. You guys need to run a tighter ship with your staff, especially the guy wearing glasses. First impressions are so important. On the bright side, the food was great. The perfect ratio of balanced savory and sweet recommended is both a signature plate and French toast. The meat is heavy if you're not used to spam etc. Pairs well with their tropical drinks. I've never been to Oakley, but a dog meetup brought me to the area! My companion, Dad, and I came to the area with my pup. My Dad recommended we try Bistro Punahele Tonnelier due to it being dog-friendly and offering Hawaiian fare. Since we had my puppy, we sat outside. I can't speak for the ambiance inside but outside was super casual and rustic. The furniture was a bit dirty outside (ants crawling), but the staff wiped it before we sat--we just had to monitor the ants. Service by staff was great. We were notified that there was only one server so things would be slow but our lovely server was phenomenal. They gushed over my puppy, provided water and snacks for her, and took care of us checking in regularly. The bistro serves typical American breakfast and lunch with a Hawaiian and French influence. When it comes to Hawaiian food on the mainland, I don't play around. Having lived there, I do have high expectations. For my meal, I had the House Signature Omelette, Smoked Salmon with Spinach and Onions. For my side, I had the potatoes. The omelet was generously packed with spinach, a filling portion, but lacking a bit of seasoning. The potatoes were superb--crispy and creamy. Companion had the Fried Portuguese Sausage and Spam omelet. I had a bite and thought it was okay--just meat and egg nothing else. Flavors weren't truly there. My Dad had the Aloha Tower which was a sight in itself--meat and carb forward galore. He said it was delicious. Though I never come to Oakley, I'm glad we had a pleasant meal. I say this restaurant is worth trying if you live in the area for the unique offerings, but not one I'd go back to especially for the Hawaiian food. First time visiting for breakfast. Finally after all these years! I was super excited! Looks bigger on outside than actually inside. Tables are really close together and I personally didn't feel like I had my own personal space. Like when my neighboring table mate got up to leave her butt pretty much rode down the side of our table. Definitely could not walk straight out... even walking sideways was too close The bench seats along the wall are uncomfortable, I had to switch seats with hubby. The food was aiiight. I ordered the egg Benedict. It wasn't the one thats on the website menu. This one had the English muffins, sautéed spinach, poached eggs, caramelized onions, bacon and French hollandaise with smoked paprika. It was meh. Just meh. It looked messy when presented. The English muffins were soggy AF from the sautéed spinach. Then layered with 4 thick bacon slices then the poached eggs with hollandaise & a sprinkle of paprika. The 2 csmall tablespoon size dollops of caramelized onions were on my potatoes. Not on the Benedict at all. I could have gotten a better Benedict down the street. I was disappointed for sure, no Aloha there. Hubby ordered the Aloha Tower... he liked it. Aloha for him. Service was fast & friendly. Coffee was BLACK! They do offer honey to sweeten it up a bit. Ok, so I found this place on a fluke. But I'm happy I did!! So I didn't know what to expect because I've never really eaten Hawaiian themed food. But upon arriving you had to wait outside and write you name on a list! It was kinda cold that day so this method sucked! But that being said once we got inside the overall service was great. I went with the Loco Moco fries, my daughter went with the chimichura steak minus any kind of sauce! And my wife got the same thing with all the sauce. Plus we tried the French Toast. All the food was really good. The Loco Moco was really good! I'm skeptical of eating gravy but I must say this meal was really good. The burger patty was really good. Came here on a whim Saturday morning around brunch time and glad I did. We wrote our name down and waited maybe 15-20 minutes before being called for our table of two. We thought we'd have the option of sitting outside but instead we were brought directly inside and sat at the small table by the window; unfortunately our view to outside was a little blocked by the baby seats stacked outside lol but otherwise the natural lighting was beautiful at that time of day. The inside is much smaller than I expected but the ambience is so wonderful! It felt cozy and intimate inside and we absolutely loved all the decor. Our orders were promptly taken by our server, he had curly hair and a septum piercing, really nice dude. I ordered the smoked salmon eggs Benedict and a mimosa and my bf ordered the tri tip sandwich and a beer. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and agreed on coming back. Wait time was reasonable, vibes were on, food and drink were delicious, and service was great. Next level French Hawaiian HAPA breakfast in an old train station? In Oakley? WTF? Did you ever wonder what happens when a trained French chef decides to goes Hawaiian and make make Loco Moco in CA? Of course not, an anomaly like that could never exist. But somehow, way the heck out in an old train station in Oakley, which is never a destination for anything, exists a breakfast comfort food location that exceeds culinary expectations. The downside is there are no reservations and being open only on weekends for brunch, wait times regularly exceed an hour. Also because it is a tiny converted train station the walls are brick and wood circa early 1900s, so expect loud yelling just to be heard and pray no one brings a crying baby. Service is good, although not quite full Aloha. As I previously mentioned, the chef is French. That means you operate on his time, not yours. If you are patient enough, you will be rewarded with a full belly of his awesome HAPA gastronomy. Portions are generous, especially for the price. I ordered the Aloha Tower and ate the whole thing, although everyone else I was with took home plenty of leftovers. In SF, a meal like this would be more than twice as much, although in SF there would be something to do/buy/see before and after to fill up the rest of the day. To summarize: In this remote East Bay locale exists a unique mix of French and Hawaiian breakfast comfort food, where you might find a perfect Croque Madame aside a hearty Loco Moco. We had to write our names on the waitlist it was not bad at all we hardly waited for 10 mins... parking is very limited but still there is public parking on the street. One of the best breakfast places that we have been to! The most delectable crispy potatoes ever and the eggs were poached to perfection. Along with the caramelized onions and fresh spinach and super tasty Portuguese sausages this Eggs Benedict was fit for a king , that too a Hawaiian King !! And the portion size was humongous ! Once in a while, when my initial visit someplace is so good I make myself wait to review it until my second visit, just to make sure I wasn't dreaming the first time. Well I'm happy to report this Bistro is the real deal. Modest pricing, excellent service, great atmosphere and the food...well I would need a masters degree and a thesaurus to describe how wonderful it truly is. I had the Loco Moco (again) and it is the best I've ever had! Perfect eggs, charred beef patty over rice with simply delicious brown gravy. My GF had the Monte Cristo last time and raved about it. This time she had the spinach and mushroom omelet with a side of extra crispy bacon and raved again! With many other items which we are eager to try, this has become our go-to place for brunch on the weekend. Strongly recommended!! read more

This place is so cute . The rustic Hawaiian garden decor is so pretty. Our server was great, patient, took time to explain a few dishes and recommended drinks. The punahele sangria was good, the lychee sangria was just ok. I got the Portuguese sausage skilled and it was rich and flavorful. Othe dishes ordered were the monte Cristo which they said was really good, and the coconut fried rice which they also really liked. Unfortunately I don't eat eggs and they couldn't omit them from the fried rice which is weird and a little disappointing. I wish there were some lighter dishes or more fruits and vegetables, just because everything was so rich and heavy. But it was all delicious so I guess it's just not an every day place. Nothing absolutely wow'd me. The food is good and unique considering how uncultured Oakley is. I can see why it's doing well in this area because there is not a lot of Hawaiian fusions restaurants in the area. That being said, it's good for Oakley, but I've definitely had better Hawaiian fusion food. The coconut rice really excited me when I saw it on the menu, but unfortunately I didn't get the coconutty taste I was expecting. I ordered the aloha tower and the beef patty was very dry. It definitely needed some sort of sauce. I paid an extra $7 a corn beef hash patty, but it honestly was way too mushy and just threw off the entire texture of dish as a whole. I would come back here again on a whim, and would order something else. We waited about 30 minutes, it would be nice if they have a Yelp Waitlist because the restaurant is very small. The inside is giving white washed Hawaiian but it's understandable considering the area. read more

Deeply disappointing experience. My mother ordered a burger medium rare -- not once, but twice it arrived well done. After sending it back a second time, the chef refused to remake it, claiming he didn't want to "waste inventory." To make matters worse, when we asked to speak with him, we were told he was "too busy" to come out and apologize. This combination of poor food execution, refusal to correct mistakes, and complete lack of accountability is unacceptable. We left frustrated and hungry. Needless to say, we won't be returning -- and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who values basic customer service or respect. After an hour of waiting, the waiter came out and let us know there aren't any seats inside so they can offer the outdoor table???? After a whole ass hour of us waiting for a table and after a whole ass hour of keeping those tables open???? Service: We had to wait ~35mins for our food, ~20mins for our check, ~15mins to have our tab picked up. Our waitress was sweet though but she was definitely overwhelmed. Food: Big servings but ok food. French toast - Yes, get this. This was our favorite. Aloha tower - Pineapple fried rice and all the meat tasted good but gravy was SALTY. VERY salty. Please don't mix everything with the gravy because your dish will be ruined. Smoked salmon with spinach and onions - Everything else tasted delicious but the smoked salmon was hard and chewy????? Grilled prawns - Yuck because the whole dish was drenched in oil. Please see my picture for reference. It was supposed to be "sauce" but it was all 100% OIL. The tiny toast was also DRENCHED in oil. Grilled pawns were also EXTREMELY SALTY. My table and I joked that we were going to get a heart attack from eating this dish. I have visited numerous times and have ordered different entrees. To say this restaurant is a gem is understating the truth. Where else can you get such sophisticated food such as what is served at Bistro Punahele Tonnelier! I recently had the Surf n Turf, which consists of two English muffin halves covered with a mouthwatering, perfectly cooked NY steak, two deliciously grilled prawns, sauteed fresh spinach, two poached eggs, and a from-scratch hollandaise sauce. My dining companion had the Tartine Steak: toasted sourdough bread with grilled NY steak, the most wonderful caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and crispy potatoes with béarnaise sauce. The chef is from France and is a very storied and dedicated chef. The interior of the restaurant is extremely clean and well organized. Although they don't take reservations, we have never waited longer than 15-20 minutes for a table. The service is outstanding. We never have to ask to refill our drinks or any other request. We are looking forward to trying more of their menu offerings. Make this one of your new years' resolutions to go to the Bistro and taste what refined, fresh, and delicious food is. read more

We've been trying to eat at this place and it's either they were closed that day or we didn't make it on time. Today it was fate. We finally made it. There was a little bit of a wait but not too long. Considering the place is small. Maybe 12 tables inside at most I can't be sure. A few more outside but I don't know if they're serving outside. The ambiance is beautiful. It brings a bit Hawaii. The music and the food was giving me the island feels. The food we ordered was delicious and the price was not too bad. We ordered the Aloha tower, Loco Moco Fries, and Egg Benedict Salmon. For drinks we had delicious mimosas. I wish they were open more than three days a week. I really liked the food and the vibe of the place. And it look like there were some regulars that come often. As a bonus, we met the owner of the restaurant which rarely ever happens at a place. She's very nice. FYI, about the bathroom, it's outside around the corner. It's attached to the building you just have to walk out of the restaurant. Don't worry it's nice clean. read more

Bonjour et Aloha! Lol So this small little shack in Downtown Oakley is worth the cruise to Downtown Oakley; at least that's the only reason I cruised there. HA! It's definitely has that feel-good zen-island-calming vibe when you walk through the doors. It's not very large, but also not as small as some of the other great breakfast diners I know of. We came here and we were super lucky to be seated within a few minutes. This place is usually packed and there's a waiting list so most people take a little cruise to the shops around. On this particular Saturday, there was barely anyone there around 11:45ish. So, the food, let's start there - it's a mixture of things; you got a few regular American diner type of entrees, like ham and cheese omelets, burgers, etc., But then, you got the other stuff, the good stuff - the Local Hawaiian type of food with a bit of a French twist added in. Never thought about that type of combo, but it worked. Order up! Classic PSR Platter - came with Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice. It's a staple back in the islands, so it was great to see that on the menu. The linguica sausage they used was tasty, it wasn't very oily, and burnt just enough on the edges with a good smokey flavor. The was fresh and cooked exactly to order, over easy; so the yolk was still good to be mixed with the rice. Surf n Turf - my wahine is typically an Egg's Benedict type of gal during brunch, but the Surf-n-Turf was her pick. This was top notch - you got Two English muffins topped with poached eggs, spinach, New York steak AND prawns! It's covered with French hollandaise and smoked paprika! Soooo good. I'm telling you, this was not something I would think of when you hear "Surf-n-Turf" but it was great. The prawns were huge, the steak was cooked a little more than we'd like, but it was still tasty. I ordered the Aloha Tower, it's like a loco moco with spunk! It's coconut fried rice topped with a ground beef patty, spam, bacon (added), and eggs, and don't forget the gravy! This was on point, the coconut fried rice is the business here. Kahuku-Style Garlic Prawns!! Ya'll this is the one. If you can't decide what to get, order this - there's no ways you're not gonna love this. AND you can add their coconut fried rice to go with it! The prawns are not small, it's marinated, then grilled to perfection. It was not chewy or rubbery, fresh, tasty and the flavors they use to fuse it all together - so mouth watering! For sweets, we all shared a plate of Classic French toast. It hit the spot and completed our brunch perfectly. I've seen a few reviews about some of the food being too salty, just let your server know you'd like either no salt or less salt on your meal so they can let the chef know. :) The service was impeccable! From the moment the young host acknowledged us upon walking up to the restaurant; to the great service throughout our meal from our server. All Aloha vibes from all their employees, owners included. I definitely recommend checking this place out. Heads up, they do get very busy and it's a small place, small business. So if you plan on going there, maybe call ahead to see what the wait time is like to prepare yourself, try not to take it out on them as they serve those who are currently being served. The place is small but really cute. Service is great (friendly and quick but doesn't feel rushed). Most importantly, the food is excellent. I went with my husband and sister and tried everything on all of our plates, lol. The coconut rice and Portuguese sausage were my favorite. The rice was savory and had a really good flavor. It could have been a meal on its own. The sausage was also really good with the perfect amount of crisp on the outside, and wasn't too fatty or filled with gristle.
