In Brentwood to run some errands, we stopped here for lunch as it was nearby to our other destinations. It was modest looking from the outside, but having a parking lot is always a plus! Inside, it gave off an old school vibe - obviously this place has a lot of history. It reminded us of similar cafés we would see in small Northern California towns on vacation. We later found out the café had been here for 60 years. Most of the patrons seem to be regulars, knowing the servers and chatting with them, a good sign. I ordered the Joe's Scramble with hash browns and wheat toast. My wife ordered the eggs Benedict with country potatoes. We didn't have to wait long, and you definitely get your money's worth - the servings were quite large. We ate well, and had enough leftovers for dinner. First time here and it's an icon for diner's, really loved the place the customers are all regulars and the woman that appeared to be an owner was very friendly and talking to customers. Have walked in and I understand it's busy as they close at 2pm and i am walking in at 12:30pm. But both times the counters are empty and she has been just unapproachable and contradicting. She even cracked some jokes. This hole in the wall doesn't look like much but is larger than expected inside. They have some old Brentwood memorabilia photos in the hallway and cool old style signs by the tables. Food - I had the chicken fried steak. The gravy was thick and had lots of seasoning. The breading on the chicken was crispy and didn't fall apart with the gravy. I would get this again. The waffle was thick and fluffy. Wife got the, ribeye, not much seasoning when I took a few bites. Okay. So, yesterday I had an hour to kill before my hair appointment with CurlsbyLiz. I decided to get breakfast. I saw this place and went in. I was immediately greeted and at a table. A very nice wait person asked right away if I wanted something to drink and he made his suggestions on the menu. I ultimately ordered the BLT. It was almost 10:30 and I was hungry! It came out about 10 minutes later and was so worth every penny I paid! The bacon was thick and salty. The bread was toasted to perfection. There was a good ratio of tomato and lettuce to sandwich, if you know what I mean. The French fries were golden and delicious as well. Update: 2/21/24 Brentwood Cafe is a very good eatery in Brentwood. It is a very old school cafe/diner. The ambiance is 50-60-ish. Brentwood cafe has a lot of locals frequenting this establishment for breakfast and lunch. They do have a dinner menu, but the cafe closes early at 2:00pm. The service is very good. The staff always refills your beverage cups. We good to Brentwood Cafe for breakfast. Our breakfast arrived promptly. Italian Scramble - 4/5 The Italian scramble consists of eggs, Italian sausage, mushrooms, green onions, red bell peppers, green onions, potatoes that were all scrambled together, and topped with Jack Cheese and sour cream. The Italian sausage was not as herby as it should have been but still was good. The potatoes were excellent. They were tender to the bite, not soft and mushy as I expected. I loved the this selection and will order it again in the future. I want to trey the other breakfast scrambles. Corned Beef Hash and eggs - 4/5 Real corned beef, slightly seasoned, with perfectly fried over easy eggs. And excellent breakfast. Yup, you guessed it another 5 star review. God I love little diners. I think they have multiple ways to enter this establishment. We went through the "front/ streetside" entry way through their little covered outside seating area. Right off the bat, there was a gentleman smoking, which I know it totally not legal, but hey, it's Brentwood and I'm not gonna hate. If anything, that just solidified the authenticity of this small hole in the wall type diner. Reminded me of my days in Texas... Went there to take my guys out to breakfast. I ordered a Chili Cheese Omelette with their "homemade" hashbrowns, which was unreal, so good. John ordered the Veggie Omelette also with those hashbrowns and Kevin ordered off the lunch menu, a Pattymelt with Potatoe Salad. Everything was amazing. The service was on point, a little on the slow side but again no complaint there, all the staff was diligently working and they were pretty slammed. I highly recommend this place. I love this place. Prices are very good, portions are very large (so bring your appetite) or take half your meal home for a 2nd meal. I had the 1/2 Calif Egg Benedict with fruit. They should call it "The Gladys" since my grandmother always ordered this and she lived until she was 95 yrs old. My Hubby had the Reuben. His was so good and the bread was beautifully presented. Wish I took pics. After a delicious meal, I asked the owner (Paul) where he sources his bread. He told me he gets it from a small bakery in Richmond. Also he sources his tomatoes locally from Smith Family Farms (only a couple miles away from his Cafe). Even when it is not tomato season, he informed me that he uses the tomatoes to make marinara sauce so he can provide a sauce showcasing Smith Family Farms heirloom tomatoes all year long. The Brentwood Cafe is not pretentious. This is a local hang out for so many long-term residents, but on my visit, I believe other new folks have discovered this place, especially as the area has grown in population. This would be a great place for Diners, Drive In, and Dives to feature. That said, the owner really does not want the publicity. I tried the California Egg Benedict, which was a new experience for me with the addition of cheese. While I liked the concept, I found the hash browns a bit on the dry side, which made me wonder if they had been frozen at some point. We also ordered the pigs in a blanket; I felt that the pancake could have been freshly made, as it tasted like it might have been reheated earlier in the day.
