This review is for the two experiences I've had at the bar the past two weeks. Both times I've been the food and service have been top notch, I'm already looking forward to going back! I tried their Short Rib Tacos which I'm still salivating over. Hard shell on the inside, soft on the out gives a great crunch and flavor without making a mess. I love all things short rib and guacamole so it was heaven for me. Their Bolognese is great. Fresh pasta and pancetta that gives it a nice salty finish - yum! I also enjoyed their Chicken Fettuccine which came with a garlic cream sauce which was super light and tasty. Sitting at the bar, martinis and service were both on point! One time I came with a friend, another time I came alone and both times I enjoyed myself. Will be back soon. read more

We were a group of 5 for brunch earlier today. I admit that the restaurant wasn't my 1st choice, but after perusing the menu it appeared to be a good fit with something for everyone. Entering the decor is pleasing.... We were seated toward the back on the bar side. Our server was prompt asking if we wanted to order beverages. The dining companion to my right ordered a cold brew coffee with cream. When the server returned with our drinks she'd forgotten the cream saying she's be right back. He waited patiently but she was nowhere in sight. She did return after awhile for our food orders without the cream .. he asked her a second time and she apologized... saying she would definitely bring over the cream. Well she took our orders and some time passed and guess what? No cream. Now he was losing patience and we scanned the place looking for any server. My eyes locked with another and I beckoned her over, but she kept moving in another direction. .. So finally our food arrived. He asked again and perhaps the 3rd time was the charm? She walked over to somewhere and produced the cream within seconds .. okay So our food was served and I ordered huevros rancheros .. it consisted of 2 poached eggs over tortilla, beans topped with salsa. Bland beyond belief... It was clear it needed seasoning. So I scanned the place hoping for a sighting and out of luck. .. I started to eat it. The salsa had the taste of bottled - commercial bland & boring. It needed some heat... The eggs were ok. The rest bleh ... Still no one in sight. So I kept just pushing it around to kill time. Not once did our server stop by and ask us if everything was ok .. would anyone care for a refill etc. Nothing. Luckily the company - the 5 of us were ensconced in great conversation because had we not been I probably would have just paid my bill and left. So the takeaway.... I don't feel that this is a restaurant I'd ever return to. There are several others in the vicinity to choose from. read more

I love this place! Lots of seating, high tops, low tops and booths but the draw for me is the bar and bartenders. The bar is long and comfortable. The food is delicious and the menu covers any and all tastebuds! Sunday brunch is to die for, especially the Bloody Mary's which you can build and make it your own. read more

Good overall. Tasty vegetarian options, fresh ingredients. Having said that, food quality and taste can vary day to day and everything is overpriced. For example, street corn salad bowl came with 1/4 cup of lettuce, as if it was the sides for fajitas-$13. read more

Plopped in today after walking around moody street, seated immediately. Appreciated the variety of choices on the menu. Very attentive server who was happy to explain various items and assure us the kitchen could accommodate our needs. Had the short rib tacos - fantastic!! So delicious. A few TVs but not obtrusive at all. We even remarked on how the acoustics made chatting across table easy. The bar looked like a nice place to hang out at and eat as well. This past Sunday as we were trying to kill time waiting for a table at another restaurant, our empty stomachs naturally led us to another restaurant. Luckily we walked in at the perfect time and were able to grab 3 seats at the bar to sit down and have a drink and snack. Despite finding seats at the bar, it took nearly 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged or greeted us (this is the reason for only 4 stars). Naturally I ordered a Bloody Mary to start things off. This place was pretty cool as they actually have a make your own Bloody menu. You get to pick your liquor, mix, rim, and garnishes. You fill it out with a pencil and just hand it to the server which I'm sure helps make sure everything is accurate. I thought this was really cool! Also, the Bloody was really delicious!! To hold us over until until our table was ready at the other place, we chose to share the cinnamon buns skillet. This was AMAZING. The skillet comes with 3 rolls and TONS of icing. I seriously could have eaten 10 it was so tasty! Based on the Bloody and Cinnamon Buns Skillet, I really enjoyed this place. They could easily have gotten a 5 star from me if they had better service! read more

Bistro781 is in the heart of downtown Waltham. Upon walking in, the decor really sets the tone for this restaurant, as there are oversized, antique-like decor throughout the venue. There is a variety of seating throughout the restaurant that includes booths, tables, and a long, outstretched bar. My friends and I decided to try out Bistro781 on a Sunday morning when we were looking for a spot with some brunchy drinks! Walking in, it was very busy and bustling, but conveniently there were three stools open at the bar. As we sat down, it took a while to get acknowledged by anyone, even though there were three bartenders working. After about 10 minutes, a bartender finally came up to us and gave us menus. Bistro781 has a lot to offer for brunch. They provide a lot of lunch food, as well as some unique breakfast food. For a special that day, they had a buffalo chicken benedict, which I would have ordered any day, if we hadn't just been there for drinks. I ended up ordering a peach bellini and one of my friends decided to order from the make-you-own bloody menu. They have a ton of options when it comes to making your own bloody mary, and they are good! We also decided to order a cinnamon roll bake to share amongst the three of us, and it was amazing and dripping in frosting. Everything you could hope for in a cinnamon roll bake. However, when we received our cinnamon roll, it took a while for the bartender to notice us trying to get her attention to get extra plates. Overall, Bistro 781 is a great brunch spot with some really unique options and a great selection of brunchy drinks to choose from. One thing I think they could work on would definitely be the service as it took a while for the bartender to notice us and continue to be accessible, as there were three bartenders working the bar. read more

walked in one weekday lunch time and found the place empty, but welcoming. server seemed a bit...overloaded with tasks, but was very pleasant and attentive. shout out to the very kind server who went out of her way to make pink lemonade for the toddler diner! blueprint of the space is long and deep. one side at the bar with multiple TVs, the other side with tables decorated with pictures of the town, partitioned by a short wall. some tall tables out by the front give a cocktail hour chilling the perfect setup. husband found this place on an app that searches for gluten-free dining. kudos to them for having enough offerings that are naturally gluten free, along with some that can be made as such with accommodations. food is delicious and well made; we all enjoyed the apps and our respective meal. could just be us with small stomach; there was enough leftover to make another person's meal. only thing that baffles me is the pricing. for example, "small plates" range from $13 to $17 -- that's the range of an entree at any other place with the same calibre! even our lunch dishes were in the same price range. so...what exactly is the idea of "small plates"? for time being, i also thought that meant "apps for sharing", but the offerings within that category don't seem to suggest so. maybe they meant a slightly smaller portion or lighter meal choices. another pricing baffle: kids meal pasta, $6. add shrimp +$8, add chicken +$5. what's with doubling the base price just by adding protein??? lucky our kid likes it plain anyway, so i didn't have to begrudgingly shell out $14 for a kid's meal. pricing aside, it was a great meal. may return for the $1 oysters or brunch (starting in March, boo). free one-hour street parking on the main road, or pull into Spruce St lot to park a couple hours ($1/2hr) to a day...I think there is that option. read more

This was a very underwhelming experience. My wife and I went for our anniversary and beginning with our poor seating by a cramped side, with people hovering over us, my napkin and utensils were filthy. When we asked the waiter if we could move, he said, "yeah, I don't know why we seat people here." He nicely moved us, but from there our services was horrible, at the far end of the outside of the service area. Our drinks tasted clearly watered down and our food was served cold. To her credit, the waitress seemed overworked and she took our food off of the check. But too little too late, especially for such a special occasion. We won't be returning, to say the least. read more

Came here for brunch after hearing what the wait was for In a Pickle haha. They weren't too busy at 10:30 on a Saturday morning, which was nice, though by 11 it was bustling. The atmosphere is very nice inside; classy yet casual with lots of dark wood throughout. I ordered a black coffee (comes with free refills) and was so glad I did. The coffee was beyond my expectations: rich, dark and fragrant. A small thing to some, but I definitely appreciate when a place perfects the little things. Then I ordered the short rib hash eggs benedict. The potatoes on the side were percectly crispy and seasoned so well. As for the eggs benedict, i enjoyed the sauce, but should have ordered a classic ham one instead of the short rib hash. The hash was very soft in texture and looked unappetizing unfortunately. It tasted good overall but was lacking the crispy texture I expected. Overall, a great place to go with a group if you're looking for a tasty brunch in Waltham without having to wake up early. read more

Slow service and rude staff. If you're going to have a kids menu please make sure that your servers are trained to help out in making the experience smooth and drama free. My 3 year old was given an uncapped water glass. I asked the server to get a top, didn't show up for 5 mins so I asked another server since my kid was playing with it. The first server finally showed up and the second server gave me attitude for asking her. Finally my dry flavorless nachos showed up with no sour cream or salsa and hot pizza that was placed right in front of my kid who grabbed a slice and dropped it . Server didn't show up to ask if I needed anything the whole time, I had to ask for kids fries and jalepenos. Server placed the jalepenos right in front of my kid (seriously?) and she grabbed a pepper. Showed up with a large plate of hot fries and no place on the tiny table they gave us outside. With an upset kid, I asked server to give me boxes for the food and give me the check, showed up with the wrong size of boxes so had to wait another 10 mins for the right box and my credit card. Food was great all around and we had a variety - banana bread French toast, cinnamon roll French toast, a burger, a chicken chicken sandwich, crab cakes, Americanand an omelette - all well received. I came in at 10:15 on a Saturday morning, and there was absolutely no one there. However, by the time my friend arrived, the place was absolutely packed. Our waitress was pretty attentive, and was able to notice when we were ready to order. However, as the place became busier, we lost her in the hustle. We both got fresh fruit orange juice, which was delicious. I ordered the pulled pork Benedict, and my friend ordered the avocado egg toast. The Benedict was very average, and the potatoes that came with it weren't that great either. My friend seem to enjoy her avocado toast, but was only able to finish half of it. The avocados kept on falling off with each bite, since they were laid on top of the toast rather than smeared into it. This is definitely a very affordable option in the Waltham area, and there is a good amount of parking nearby! read more

I had brunch there with my visiting cousins from Canada today, after we ordered we waited 45 minutes for our food to come out, only to be totally disappointed. All our breakfasts were cold and just not good. I wanted to take them somewhere nice but this place was a mistake. We were never asked how our food was, only asked once while we waited if we were alright. I had eaten dinner here before and thought it was good. I love brunch, because they have a good selection. The Eggs Benedict was pretty good. I got some cinnamon rolls, but they can get too sweet so I recommend going with at least 4 people to share. My boyfriend got the cheeseburger and it was super salty. Parking on Moody Street can be difficult too. Overall, it's still a pretty good spot. The tables are super high though and I was that awkward person who kept dropping utensils. read more

They have a great menu for brunch and everyone knows it! Be prepared to wait for a table or make a reservation because they are always packed! Mediocre place. My braised short rib gnocchi was disappointing, gnocchi was soggy and had no bite, short rib was more so boiled and covered in sauce. Could have pan seared and braised it. The sauce was ok. Brussel sprouts were burnt. Mushrooms cut into cubes like im a preschooler. I think the best dish would probably be the scallops. Tuna poke was bland and barely covered in spicy mayo, decent amount of tuna though. Steak quesadilla was good but not worth 30$, honey i can get a quesilla from an authentic Mexican restraunt for $12 and they actually season their food. This is my first experience at Bistro 781 and I LOVED IT!!Absolutely amazing food and staff!! I have a TON of food allergies and I was well taken care of! I didn't for a second feel that I wasn't going to be safe eating here, thank you so much and I will definitely be coming back because of those accommodations!!! My friend and I came in during the switch of morning and evening staff around 4:15pm and we ordered and paid with one bartender ( Marilyn) and we were further taken care of by our wonderful bartender Emily for the rest of the evening!! Usually, when you go to an establishment and ask for a side of bacon you get 3 strips for roughly five to six bucks and you go about your merry little way. You know it's a little steep, but it's bacon, you will sacrifice for bacon. Not at Bistro 781. You don't get three slices of bacon, you get a Mound Of Bacon. You get Bacon Galore. You get "let-me-sate-your-every-bacon-desire-for-the-rest-of-the-week-bacon" bacon. You get "tell your friends bacon nirvana exists" bacon. I'm seriously tempted to let the mic drop and leave the review here because nothing else needs to be said when you get that much crispy delicious bacon handed to you with a side of fluffy, yummy eggs. Shall I continue? Yeah, I can't deprive you guys.... Ambiance: Mellow with warm lighting and ample seating. I can definitely foresee a big brunch with friends and family here. Service: Amazing! From start to finish. Made my reservation with the wonderful Hostess who explained seating, the heights of the different tables and each seating area. Arrived and was seated promptly and our server was on top of everything. The food came out quickly and fresh does not begin to describe it. This annoys me... why do you advertise on your website and the chalkboard wall that you do buck a shuck and don't actually have it? Our waitress said since 2020 but it's been advertised for years.
