Such a lovely experience. After a Lake Michigan dinner boat cruise decided to cancel on me last minute, I decided to make reservations at bistronomic for dinner. It is located right on N. Wabash Ave. between Chestnut and Pearson streets. It is walking distance from the Riverwalk and other places in downtown Chicago, but if you are driving, parking is super easy with spot hero (and cheaper than street parking)! We ended up getting the escargot, French onion soup, venison, duck breast, and crème brûlée. We also got a nice red wine with dinner! This was a beautiful place, really reminded me of France! The crème brûlée was probably the best one I've ever had, in between the layers of custard and crunchy sugar on top, there was a layer of chocolate which was OUTSTANDING!!! The chocolate gave it such a nice rich consistency and the custard was so creamy and perfect! I had never had venison before, I found out that it is deer! It is quite gamy meat, but I really liked it because of the texture! I wish I could give 4.5. We also had takeout so that might color our review. This is a place that knows how to do meat really really well. The Beef Bourgogne was excellent and the steak frites almost melt in your mouth. Even the chicken was outstanding. The only miss to us was the smaller plate duck. It looked like it came with potato chips in a cheap salad. The duck itself was nice and crispy albeit a touch dry for a dark meat. As you'd expect also pretty pricey So that plus the duck miss brought it down from a 5. The takeout was ready in time and would do again but I bet generally would have been better in person. read more

A French restaurant in the US where the waiters actually speak French is probably already pretty legit, but it's definitely the case at Bistronomic, which my friend and I visited on Wednesday night. They're proud that they've been recommended by the Michelin Guide, and after my experience there I think it's definitely justified. Hungry but not starving, we opted to share 3 starters and medium plates instead of individually ordering full meals. We began with a salmon tartare, offered off the menu as a daily special. Served in a cute jar with several crostini on the side, the tender bits of salmon were dressed in a lightly herbaceous oil and topped with an avocado puree. Eaten together, the tartare spread on the toast was wonderfully savory and left a pleasant aftertaste that kept me going back for more. I did wish we had a few more crostini to accompany the full jar, but we made use of the delicious table bread that arrived at the beginning of our meal to mop up the rest of the tartare. The PEI mussels and duck confit arrived together as our "main" courses - between the two of them, I preferred the luscious, deftly cooked confit, paired with a lightly sweet and textural salad. The skin isn't as crisp as I've had it at other places, but the flavor and internal tenderness were spot on. As for the mussels, I really enjoyed dipping all my leftover bread in the cooking broth (and at times eating it with a spoon) but the mollusks were just a tad soft for my preference. On the bright side, all of them were steamed wide open, indicating how fresh they were. Honestly, I really can't complain too much about either of these dishes, and they were both reasonably priced at $16-18. If I'm back in Chicago, I'll definitely be back to try more - French food that's both delicious and affordably priced is already difficult to find in the States, plus it's just down the street from my friend's apartment... read more

My first experience with Bistronomic was excellent. My wife and I picked Saturday brunch here for Restaurant Week. To start off, we had to keep pushing our reservation back because of some last minute Saturday morning work deadlines. Bistronomic and Opentable were very generous in allowing us to modify our reservation and giving us the breathing room needed to make it. When we arrived, they were slammed. People all up in the bar, and every table occupied. Our table was just getting cleaned up, so it worked out perfectly. The hostess was still polite, professional, and cheery despite the packed house. The wait staff was all on point with composure, and we were promptly seated. We ordered our Restaurant Week Menu items: Terrine, Creamed Carrot Soup, 2 Crouqe Monsiuers, Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse Bar, and Cherry Baked Alaska (a creamy tart). Overall the food was excellent, on the heavy side, but I didn't feel gross after eating everything, even with the excess dairy and butter. Their portions were very generous for a Restaurant Week Menu, this was a serious lunch value. The Veloute (soup of the day), carrot soup: I had a taste, and then one more delicious taste. My wife didn't want to share it. It came in a small cast iron bowl shaped like a cauldron, so it kept the warm temperature without scalding your tongue or mouth. The terrine was good, this may have been the most underwhelming item. I think I'm spoiled from French markets, but it was solid. It had a good fattiness and umami flavor for sure. There was a generous slice of the loaf, plus a toast, pickles, and arugula. This was a very complete appetizer if anything. Our croque monsieurs looked very impressive. Huge plates of black truffle fries, arugula with parmesan, and hefty cheese-creme covered sandwiches. The toasted bread had a great crunch, with a soft, buttery inside. The cheese was perfectly melted, gooey, and had a great chew. The portions of ham were not excessive, and lent a savor, smokey flavor to complete the sandwich. We could barely finish our entrees, and we almost forgot about our desserts. Both desserts were also very tasty. The bread pudding texture was heavier than I expected, but the cherries and toasted nuts let your palate dance around it. There was a balance of tart, sweet, and savory from the nuts, cherries, and cream. The chocolate bar was excellent as well, most surprising to me was the chewy, crispy crust. It was like a wafer crust on the bottom, and played delightfully with the creamy mousse. Definitely a highlight. For sure I want to return, especially if they are serving this burger that they were advertising on their posters. I saw beef tongue terrine and foie gras detailed on their burger chart. Yes. Despite being slammed, they never rushed us out. We were actually in a hurry and we actually left without our travel mug. I had very high expectations for this spot, unfortunately they were short staffed and so I waited over 20 minutes for my wine and even longer to order food. However, I was patient and this was not a big deal. Three stars is a low rating for me to give. I ordered the coq au vin, ponme frites, and a creme brûlée dessert. The chicken had small bones in it that were an unwelcome surprise, and there could have been more sauce served with the meal. The truffle fries came with ketchup and another sauce that was far too reminiscent of horseradish for me to enjoy it. The dessert should have been better especially at a French restaurant. It was maybe the worst creme brûlée I've had eating out. It was soggy and tasted like chocolate pudding, with no crunchy sugar top. I do want to go back as this spot is in my neighborhood. If I could give 0 stars I would. Never have I been treated with such disrespect and terrible service in my life. We ordered a Christmas family dinner through the bistronomic website. It was rather expensive but after a very difficult few months of staying in Chicago for medical treatment, we decided to try to have a nice Christmas dinner. They sent a three course meal, which was approximately enough food for 1/2 the people we ordered for. Fine, we can try to add in some bread. But no! The items are stone cold; as in refrigerated! Nowhere, not in a single place is it noted that the Christmas dinner requires full heating prior to service. We are in a temporary housing situation with no way to heat it! I called the restaurant to ask for a refund since we will have to throw this meal away! The rude owner informed me that it's stated and there is nothing she could do. Yes! You can! You can refund me the ridiculous amount of money I paid you for refrigerated slop! And to add insult to injury, she hung up on me twice. Pass it up, you are paying for an accent and a bill of goods. read more

The french onion soup and the gazpacho were both very good. The gazpacho especially was super fresh and surprisingly filling. The coq au vin was perfectly cooked and had no faults. The ravioli was really flavourful and had lots of different elements that worked wet well together. The creme brûlée was excellent - custard had great flavour and the prunes were an interesting add. The profiteroles were alright, the chocolate was a bit overpowering but not too bad. Bistronomic November 9, 2019 We returned to another great place, and we parked on the street. Roc started with very flavorful butternut squash soup, and I played follow the leader. I had the same soup. Escargot was rich with butter, flavor was a little bit different than before. The main courses for us were the salads., and my salad had some Ali tuna. We spoke with Hillary through out the evening. She a just a great person with great heart, again we talked just before leaving. Dessert : I had profiteroles with vanilla ice cream, chocolate running down sides was very limited. The toasted almonds on plate and a hint of Coco sprinkle over all. This time the bitter sweet chocolate was also on the plate. Clear mix up on the number from 4 to 2 profiteroles. One should check or know the quantity before making the commitment to us. I had planned to take to others home, well I learned! Hillary was warm and friendly. The executive chef/owner (Martial Nuguier) , and Lulu greeted us warmly and we had great conversation about knowing the meal, and working the pepper mills. We dined for 2 hours and 25 minutes. We experienced another meal with and the wait service was shaved of by 2 They did offer glasses champagne after talking about some of the experience with the waitstaff. If I could do half stars, i would give Bistronomic a 4.5 stars! I came here on a very busy Saturday evening for dinner. My table ordered the ahi tuna tartare, sea diver scallops, duck confit, and ravioli. The food was excellent except for the scallops, which were a little under cooked. The ahi tuna had excellent flavor/marinade and I would go back to bistronomic just to have three more ahi tuna appetizers. The seafood was also of excellent quality. The service was a little slow towards the end of the evening but it was a very busy weekend/Saturday evening. Overall quite a fantastic experience. read more

The service started out good but once it got busier, our waiter was non existent and by the end, had to go up to the host desk to ask for our check. I love everything French, and Bistronomic was no exception. Unfortunately, the regular menu wasn't available on the day that I came (perhaps a combination of COVID and a holiday). But I still ordered their steak offering without a second guess. And while it was good, the red wine sauce was a bit more bitter than I was expecting and the cut of meat had a lot of inedible pieces. Another item I'd been looking forward to was the black & white crème brûlée, but weirdly, it was different too; it could just as well have been crème brûlée from the grocery store, as the black & white aspect was completely absent. However, the service was impeccable, and everything was very authentically french, giving me that taste of Paris I've been so been missing. And the mountain of French fries on the side was the highlight of my meal. When things go back to normal, I'd definitely consider returning to Bistronomic to check out the full menu. read more

Today I went to bistronomic, as it says, so here's what I got. As an appetizer, I ordered a brie grilled cheese and it was cheesy, but a little sweet maybe thats just the french style. We are from the West Coast, first time in Chicago, and after 6 days of eating out this was hands down the BEST meal we have had! We had wonderful cocktails- I had a delicious French Fizz and my husband loved his Kentucky Cousin, their version of Old Fashioned. My husband opted for the prix fie and chose beet salad and lamb shank. He said it's the best lamb he has ever had. I had a beautifully dressed simple greens salad and the Coq Au Vin. They were very generous with the serving and the chicken was extremely tender and well seasoned. We split the Baked Alaska he received with his meal and it was a perfect ending! The early evening three course prix fixe menu is an excellent deal, and includes so of the best menu selections. Duck confit was perfectly crisped, served with a lightly dressed frisee salad. Salmon was perfectly browned and served over some marvelous vegetables. Two classic desserts round out the prix fixe menu. The wine list focuses on affordable French wines, with a limited selection by the glass. Service was friendly and efficient. I'll start with this; Bottomless mimosas run about $17 with the purchase of an entree! Just saying. Paola was awesome with keeping us poured up during an awesome dining experience here! I have never been to France, but this place seems to be what imagine a nice French restaurant looks like..at least that what TV leads me to believe. Nice music playing in addition to a nice decor that is quite welcoming. They have a coat rack over to the left of the entrance so that was cool as it was a chilly March afternoon. I saw some goodies on the menu but ultimately chose the Piperade Omelette as I was in the mood for some sort of egg like dish. The Omelette included goat cheese, basil pesto and peppers...so delicious and with a side of red bliss potatoes. My dining companion had the salmon benedict...she like it but said there was too much salmon. No problem as I ate what she didn't want...yum! I recently came back with a friend for dinner and got the 3 course Chef's menu. I started with the asparagus soup that included crab salad garnish which was off the chain and my entree was the very tender, delicious Maple Leaf Farm Duck Breast. When I say this was possibly the best duck I ever had, you better believe it! My dessert was the apple cake with vanilla ice cream...very good! I had an awesome glass (or 2) of the Cateau Revelette Province 2015 Rose' to wash those goodies down. It may be due to my limited experience with high(?) end dining, but the lamp shank was one of the best dishes I've ever had. The hostess and chef, which I believe are married and also the owners, were very welcoming and accommodating. The atmosphere is cute and cozy. I like the little french accent the server brings as well. However, the food is a little overpriced -- The bread is salty. The two main courses (both duck and the venison) are very dry and lack flavor with almost tasteless veggie purée. The dessert is ice cream with a touch of caramel. Again it tastes good but not high-level standard. The highlight is the drink -- very refreshing with a balanced amount of acidity. It's happened to the best of us - the food is good, the ambiance is lovely, and the service pleasant indeed but nothing quite wow-worthy... for me anyway. I was the last of my party to arrive but there was already water and some scrumptious bread on our table. I ordered the house cocktail to start, and then later I tried the Paris twist but next time would just go with a glass of wine. For food I decided on the beet salad (fully recommended) and the seasonal pumpkin ravioli, which was just ok. My friends ordered the burger and the lamb, which they both enjoyed. And I really loved that the executive chef came out from the kitchen to ask how our meal was - that was a nice touch. So who knows? Shabby and dismal experience that would make Denny's seem upscale. Swayed by sterling reviews of this neighborhood restaurant in the Gold Coast, we imagined a cute bistro, a cozy experience, good food and most importantly, the chance to meaningfully converse without having to cook in our kitchen. Instead, it was a series of mishaps and how often they occurred, seem comical in retrospect; at the time of our dinner though, it resulted in discomfort. The service staff did not seem clued into nonverbal space, the art of timing, nor hospitality. We were frequently interrupted to no avail - someone forgot to fill our waters (and as they leaned over remembered they in fact, had - never mind, they had seen that the glasses were already topped off); another time, the server simply announced her name and said, she would be back without taking any orders; and yet another, they did not know whether Humboldt Fog or Pepato (2 of their 5 cheeses and one being a blue cheese) were goat or sheep and left for several minutes to figure it out and then, simply barged upon our conversation once again, unannounced. At one point I couldn't help but notice, I was sitting with my elbow on the table and my hand to my face trying in vain to block off the next intrusion that might happen at any time. We ordered a 2012 Bordeaux Blend and when the bottle came it was from 2010. The server did not inform us of the substitution and when it was noticed, with alacrity we were told, "no worries, they are very similar." Bistronomic has a cafeteria-like seating - long tables and rigid wooden chairs with little elbow space and it's demographic seemed largely, people on the right side of seventies. Some of the food arrived cool, not hot. It's location is actually lovely - however, as for the rest in gentility, service, hospitality and culinary appeal, it has a long road ahead. read more
