BIX is truly one of those quintessential San Francisco dining experiences. Everything about our evening--from the atmosphere to the service, cocktails, and food--was unparalleled. The dining room is absolutely gorgeous: elegant, intimate, and timeless with that classic old-school San Francisco supper-club feel. Add the live piano, beautiful lighting, and impeccable service, and the entire evening feels special without being overly formal. We ordered quite a bit so we could share and try everything--the chicken liver mousse, salad, Petrale sole, lobster pasta, short ribs, and pork chop, along with several of their signature cocktails. There genuinely wasn't a miss. The chicken liver mousse was silky and decadent, the sole was delicate and beautifully prepared, and the lobster pasta was rich, flavorful, and one of my favorites of the evening. The short ribs were incredibly tender, and the pork chop was cooked perfectly. Even with such rich dishes, everything felt thoughtful and balanced. The cocktails were exceptional and fit the atmosphere perfectly--classic, sophisticated, and beautifully executed. What really completed the experience, though, was the service. Warm, polished, attentive, and perfectly paced. We never felt rushed, and everyone made us feel genuinely taken care of throughout the evening. BIX feels like the kind of restaurant that represents what dining in San Francisco can be at its best: beautiful food, exceptional hospitality, great cocktails, live music, and an atmosphere you simply can't replicate. I had a lovely Friday night at Bix! It was my first time and I wasn't sure what to expect but it was a great vibe and experience. We were seated right next to the live band which was really fun and not too loud to chat with the person next to you. I had a dirty martini with vodka and it was super smooth. We got the marrow bones to start and they kindly split up the generous portion on two separate plates (two bones each!) It was delicious and paired well with the grilled bread and parsley salad that came on the side. I got the lobster spaghetti- the pasta had a nice texture and bite and the lobster was a good portion. It has been 30 years since I have been to BIX. I still find the decor appealing, and I like the vibe. Now I am here with my adult children, who also enjoyed the space, and pulling up into an alley and walking up to the substantial front door sets a tone that still works years later. BIX is clearly a restaurant that knows the biz and what they are doing, no question. I recognize that finding staff is challenging across all business sectors, so this review is written with that in mind. I was the first of my party to arrive and was instructed to wait at the bar, and the hostess offered to check my jacket. My first impression was that the hostess was wearing a very worn turtleneck top and burnt yellow pants. I didn't think the outfit fit the restaurant's decor. The bar is a classic, and you won't find a lot of trendy craft cocktails, so a Martini was in order. It was respectable. The rest of my party arrived, and we were escorted to our table on the second floor. The bartender requested that I settle up before being seated. I scooch off the bar stool and am holding a nearly full Martini, and I was a little surprised that it was not offered to deliver my drink to the table. I walked up the entire flight of stairs and didn't spill a drop, but honestly, I felt the drink should have been delivered to our table. After being seated, the server seemed very rushed and a little frazzled, does not introduce himself, and only asks about water. All of us, at varying ages, thought the lighting was too dim. The amber-orange lighting is part of the jazz club vibe, but the Kelvins need an adjustment- too low, making it difficult to read the menu, even with the table lighting. It took several minutes for cocktail orders to be taken. Not sure, there was a check back on cocktails, and orders were finally taken for appetizers. I had to ask the server for a rundown, and he only mentioned that the potato pillows are very popular before scurrying away. At this point, we started to feel that our server was only there to take orders and nothing more. Appetizers: the potato pillows reminded me of tater tots; instead of shredded potatoes, they were made with mashed potatoes. Hamachi crudo was solid, and the chicken liver mousse was the hit. The celery soup was flavorless and a bit watery. Cesar salad was good, but the portion could have been slightly bigger. My son enjoyed the sole. I thought the piece of fish seemed a bit small. Two of us had the pork chop. It was moist and flavorful, but too salty. A steak patty was ordered and was enjoyed, but the guinea fowl was disappointing. When ordering wine, I asked the server about a Zinfandel or the Vacqueyras. He quickly answered Zinfandel without asking about preferences or offering pairing suggestions. I regretted ordering the Zinfndel. Desserts were basic, and a couple of us had a Carajillo-type cocktail. A coffee was ordered but forgotten, and arrived after the dessert. Would I return? There are so many other choices in the city at this price point. The bottom line: go for the atmosphere. The live jazz and the decor are the draw. I am not trying to be harsh here and I know staff are so difficult to hire these days, but hopefully this hurts the heart slightly to evoke some attention to detail and change so this place can last another 30 years, but not trying to hurt the heart enough to make the staff bail from providing a good product, with excellent service and a smile. My boyfriend and I decided to try this place for Valentine's Day because I love the live music. Even with a fixed menu, everything was fabulous and full of flavor. Phenomenal. Came here for a friend's birthday. This place is dark and moody, and down an alley, not on the main street. Very unique spot, with cool decor, and live piano. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was incredible, the service was top notch, and the ambience was cool with the high ceilings, low lights, and the live music. The best thing on the menu is the Potato Pillows with the little dollop of creme fraiche and caviar. The Dungeness Crab Croquettes were absolutely delicious too. My brothers and I did Bix for the New Year's Eve dinner. The night had some ups and downs, but the live music really made it for me. The band was great, and being seated on the first floor meant we got the music up close. It does get loud though, so if that's not your thing, then the upstairs seating would probably be better. The decor and artwork above the bar are beautiful, unique, and fit the space really well. Our waitress was very friendly, which I loved. Speaking about their food, it was a bit hit or miss, and the pacing was super slow. The first course came out about 40 minutes in, and the whole meal took close to four hours. Even with our reservations, we waited around 20 minutes to be seated, and I noticed a few groups ahead of us leave because of the wait time. It also felt a little awkward too standing in the middle of the bar all smooshed inside while waiting for our table. Most of the starters were letdowns for me. The truffled steak tartare was overwhelmed by raw shallots and the lobster roll had a very wet, watered-down lobster meat (disappointing for someone raised in Maine). My first course was the Dungeness crab Louie tart and it had a nice portion of crab with a tasty avocado mousse, but the tart underneath was stale, which really took away from it. The main entree was the highlight of my meal. I chose the American Wagyu New York Strip and it was cooked perfectly medium rare. It came with very minimal sides, but it didn't matter to me because I just wanted steak haha. Dessert was the largest portion in the meal. The tarte Tatin was good, but leaned heavily on warm apple caramel and could've used more vanilla ice cream for balance. For drinks, the cocktails were underwhelming and a bit flat for taste, especially the Elixir No. 3. In hindsight, wine or simple spirits would have been a better move for me. One small observation I did see at the place is that when the music really got going, people at the bar clearly wanted to jive to the tunes, but it was quickly shut down, so this is definitely a no-dancing kind of place, even on NYE. Bottom line, BIX shines with its music, atmosphere, and vibe. Came across this place while trying to find a reservation for a Saturday night while in down. So made a reservation and headed over. BIX is down a little alley type street, and may not seem like much from the outside, but stepping inside takes you back to a time of elegance. We were seated once all of our party was present and immediately ordered cocktails. Drinks were pretty good, can't complain about them, each distinct with a good balance of flavor and spirit. For appetizers, we started with the potato pillows with caviar and bone marrow. The potato pillows were just that, deep fried potato, crispy on the outside, crispy on the inside, soft on the inside, with creme fraiche and caviar. Just a little but it goodness, though the caviar really didn't stand out as I thought it would. The bone marrow was ample in size and portion with your standard bread and a little salad with vinaigrette to cut the richness of the marrow. Another great appetizer. Entrees, the chicken hash was recommended as it had been in the menu for over 20 years. It came on a bed of craved leeks and chanterelles. Overall, a very underwhelming dish with two coffee patties, breaded and fried. A little dry on the inside. Was just hoping for something more for a dish that had been on the menu for so long. The lobster spaghetti also felt like a little of a let down, thought it had a nice amount of lobster meat, as well as a little heat from the calabrian chili sofrito. Overall, just felt it needed some other flavor profiles to pull it all together. The steak hache could be described as a hamburger patty with pepper covered in a sauce. Had a nice flavor to the sauce but what sitting you would run back for. And the pork chop was actually a decent dish with glazed apples on top and fennel cream. Overall, cocktails were tasty and the bone marrow was great. Entrees left a lot to be desired for our table, though the pork chop was decent. This is a classy place and one of my favorite restaurants. I've gone on weekends, and there is usually piano or other live music going on. Their food is great, and the ambience is really nice. It feels like classic San Francisco. Service is great as well and feels like service that would be at an even more expensive restaurant. Last time I went I had the petrale sole, and it was cooked perfectly. The pork chop is also good. It sells steakhouse vibes but there was only one cut of steak on the menu and the waiter basically said the other dishes were better (albeit the menu rotates and a colleague said there's usually more steak options). Doesn't really matter to me as I was ordering fish anyway. I will say the fish was well cooked and had good flavor to it. Nothing super unique or blow-you-away but it was good. I really wanted to like Bix but it just wasn't for me. A lot of other people seem to like it - the place was packed ( Friday night) and it was four deep at the bar. It is a very attractive place and just my type but the noise was just too deafening. I don't enjoy screaming at my partner across the table. The live music doesn't help the noise level.It doesn't seem like you go there for the food . Not a very inspired menu. I had the steak Hache and frites. The less said about that the better. My husband liked his filet of sole ok. We shared a very small Caesar salad and it was the best thing I ate. The martini was very good and I got a lovely glass of wine. We wanted dessert but I couldn't take the noise so we left. The wait staff was very good - no complaints there. I'd say, go for an early cocktail if you're nearby. Parking is primarily on the street, but there's a convenient paid public lot on Sansome Street, just a short walk from the restaurant. The ambiance inside is wonderful--you can hear the piano playing and admire the beautiful artwork on the walls. Both the service and the food were excellent! We especially loved that the restaurant features live piano music, and around 8:30 p.m., they transition to live jazz, which really added to the experience. Once our table was ready, we were seated, and they had written us a nice little note. We ordered a few plates, and our waiter asked if we were sharing; they ended up splitting the portions for us. It's a super cool two-story restaurant with live jazz music, great service, and really good American-French fusion food. To start off, we ordered the appetizer sampler, which included three of their top selling appetizers - deviled eggs were our personal favorite. Highlight of the meal was by far the entrees. I ordered the steak, which comes on a bed of some of the best cream corn I've had in my life. Lobster spaghetti was also a really good, lighter alternative. Overall really enjoyed my time here. Our party came here for a family birthday celebration and this was the perfect spot. We timed our dinner reservation perfectly so that we were able to listen to the live jazz starting at 7. Our group was seated in a booth upstairs with a perfect view of the musicians, which we loved. The space is stunning - classy, warm, and just a touch moody. On Friday 7/31 at Bix, a host offered me two bar seats while I waited for my friend, who was minutes away. She actually pointed out two options. I chose the two worst seats at the bar, right next to the service station, to make it easier on them. I explicitly asked, "Are you sure this is okay? My friend will be here in less than three minutes." She said yes. I sat down. When a couple approached the empty seat next to me, I started to explain it was taken -- but the bartender cut me off and said "the bar is first come, first serve." I explained what I was told and he repeated, "the bar is first come , first serve". I went to the front desk to sort it out, and when I came back, he had given my seat to the couple. So much for first come, first serve. My friend walked in just as I was getting my coat. We left. On the way out, I spotted a manager and told him what happened. He couldn't have cared less. The original host was standing right there with her back to me the entire time. I've worked in restaurants and I know mistakes happen. But not one person acknowledged that I'd been given misinformation. A simple apology, a comp drink, something -- anything -- would have been the hospitable thing to do. Instead, nothing. We ended up a block away. The food was mediocre, but the service was warm and genuine -- exactly what I needed. Bix should take note. read more

I loved my vegetable pasta dish based on the lobster spaghetti but minus the meat so you get the gist. The trio of appetizers was also a highlight - I'm still dreaming of the potato pillows, deviled eggs and mini grilled cheese sandwiches (of which I think my fave was shockingly the grilled cheese). My family and I went to Bix for my mom's birthday. We arrived around 5 and the restaurant was about half way full. The restaurant itself and ambiance is very nice. Around 6, the live music started. We enjoyed some drinks before ordering our appetizers. I ordered the pisco punch, which was very good. Slightly sweet, slightly sour, and refreshing. Others ordered a French 75, the Gold Rush, and Pear Blossom. Everyone seemed to like their drinks. We ordered the marrow bones and sampler to start. The sampler came with the potato pillow, truffle cheese croques, and the deviled egg. The potato pillow was definitely the star of the show. The outside was nice and crispy with a soft inside and pleasant salty taste from the caviar. The truffle cheese croques tasted like a simple grilled cheese, but were still very enjoyable. The deviled egg had a slight truffle flavor. They were good, but not my favorite. The bone marrow was also delicious. Slightly salty and rich. It also came with a parsley, caper, onion salad which paired nicely with the bread and bone marrow. For entrees, we ordered the pork chops, braised short ribs, poached cod, veal potpie, and chicken hash. I ordered the chicken hash and it was ... okay. It was pretty underwhelming. The chicken didn't have much flavor and the puree underneath was slightly sweet. I also ordered the truffle risotto, which was delicious, it definitely saved my meal. My mom ordered the veal pot pie and loved it. My fiance ordered the short ribs, which were good... but not great. My sister ordered the fish and, again, it was a bit bland. My dad ordered the pork chops and they were also pretty good, but nothing crazy. We ended the meal with the fig leaf panna cotta and poached pears. Our waiter was kind enough to put a candle in my mom's dessert. Both of the desserts were very enjoyable. They were not overwhelmingly sweet, and had pleasant textures to balance out the dish. My fiance also ordered the espresso martini, which had a nice rich coffee flavor. Although the entrees were just okay, the overall experience was very enjoyable. The service was spectacular. Our table was constantly cleaned, our dishes were always replaced, and our waiter was very pleasant. The appetizers, drinks, and desserts also made up for the entrees! We started out with the Truffled Cheese "Croques" and the Marrow Bones, then each had the Dungeoness Crab Pasta (I think it was Tagliatelle). The Truffled Cheese Croques were good, though I could probably have made these myself. The Marrow Bones were great -- definitely a sizeable portion. Given the richness of these starters, I would probably choose one or the other next time. Our main dish, however, was light enough that we weren't too stuffed when we were done. I ordered the Sakura pork chop and it was so good. The cocktails were a bit pricey but strong and good. Service was nice and the restaurant ambiance is lively. The bone marrow was probably my favorite, super rich and flavorful. read more
