I had been a Costco customer for many years, but allowed my membership to lapse when I moved across…read morethe country 5 years ago and there was not a warehouse close to me. I have had excellent luck getting my eye glasses at Costco. They seem to just get it right. The cost compared to the typical smaller opticians is exceptional. That is the reason why I renewed my membership, Picking up my new glasses today, just 5 days after ordering them I like shopping at Costco. Great prices overall. Purchased a BJ's membership, but visited once and that was it. Prices are not as good and it's a depressing store in Leominster. What was not so impressive at Costco in W. Springfield was the chaos at the customer service counter. They use a poor system for routing customers waiting to speak with customer help, routing them across the throng of shoppers entering the store with shopping carts. Bad, bad, bad workflow. Apparently, the store is being redesigned, but who knows when that will happen. Hoping they get approval to site a new Costco at a little used mall in Leominster. Much closer to me.

For the last 10 years that I've been a member of Costco, I have been able to send my disabled…read morebrother to Costco optical where he would choose his glasses and I would pay for them over the phone with my Costco credit card. I'm not sure if my brother looked scruffy or if the policy actually has changed in Massachusetts Costco's, but this time they would not accept my credit card over the phone. Given that I live in Chicago and he does not have the money to buy it on his own, Costco just lost a vision customer. But I also will stop shopping there as well. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. It does not apply to any of the nine Costco's within my driving distance in Chicago. Massachusetts is so special.

Sweet Life Foods is a dumpy little grocery warehouse on Avocado Street, a gritty little dead-end…read moreindustrial street tucked out by the river in Springfield's North End. It's nothing fancy, inside or out a low-slung steel warehouse that shows it's age. The aisles are rough warehouse shelves and there are no fancy displays, just cut cases of goods with the prices indicated by a label on the edge of the shelf. Inside, you'll find aisle upon aisle of canned goods, packaged snacks, wholesale boxes of candy, Goya products - virtually everything you would need to stock a small neighborhood convenience store or bodega. Items are sold, for the most part, by the wholesale unit, case, or half-case only. If you're buying for a store, a lunch wagon, an event, or maybe a large family you'll find Sweet Life Foods handy. If not, you might still want to stop for things like lunchbox snacks, food storage wraps and things, or the office candy bowl. Prices are generally on the low side, but as is true no matter where you shop, know your prices before you go in. Many times local supermarket sale prices are lower per item than the wholesale case prices here. Cash, debit and credit cards accepted (I don't know about checks, sorry.) The employees are friendly and helpful. Interesting bit of trivia: The actual name of the business is Cash & Carry #0830 and they are owned by SuperValu, the same company that owns Save-A-Lot discount supermarkets. They took on the "Sweet Life" name because they're in the old Sweet Life Quality Foods distribution warehouse, and when Sweet Life went out of business years ago they never took down the old, 1960's-era sign over the front door.
